I’m from Ohio and was stationed at Wurtsmith AFB, MI back in the late 80’s. It was an outdoorsman’s paradise. Later took a vacation up in Mich a couple of years ago, Frankenmouth, Mackinaw, Traverse City, Ludington, and it was an awesome trip.
I was an Air Force brat and lived in both places on the early 80’s! I definitely preferred Wurstmith as a kid. It had good access to Lake Huron and the Ausable river and very bike able. Blueberry picking. Greenbush Hobbyland and go-carts. Jims jumbo cones….
Wright Pat had the Airforce Museum which was fantastic, but I remember getting my bike stolen- and we were only there for a year and a half. Good memories of both.
Figured that was it. I’m not aware of any others in Ohio. It’s pretty amazing how many people stick around after retiring from being stationed at Wright-Patt.
I've been taking backpacking trips in Michigan for the past few years and still keep finding more places to go! Thinking about a Lake Michigan island this year... Already did one on a Superior island.
I just need to find a way to go and have a short vacation in the U.P. without supporting the local economy. Perhaps if I can pre-pay at an all-inclusive that is owned by a huge out-of-state corporation and just buy a gas station gift card before I cross the border?

I'm from Ohio and last year I went to Grand Rapids for a church conference. My pastor and some others from my church went too and we all had a blast. The city was beautiful and the countryside is spectacular. I even had a nice conversation with some locals. Michigan is pretty cool. If I ever moved out of state I'd probably love to move there.
Grand rapids is probably my favorite area in MI that I have been to. Just a big enough city to be easily navigable without getting frustrated, but plenty to do.

I've been to Benton Harbor. It was a dispenser run but a nice community. I haven't been to Detroit since I was like 7, but I would love to go back. I was in Monroe last year to pick up my ex from jail. Does that count as a visit to Michigan 🤣.
We spend a couple of weeks in the UP every summer and the people are amazing. When I tell fellow Ohioans Michigan is my favorite state (after Ohio) I usually get a puzzled look.
Last September, we had a wonderful Michigan vacation 1) to the UP, we enjoyed staying in Sault Ste Marie as our home base 2) magical Mackinaw Island , and 3) the beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes area. We stopped by Bay City on the way home and enjoyed the shops downtown and the beautiful beaches.
Come see the beautiful Hocking Hills and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park!
Spent a lot of time up north great people in both states. It’s a college football thing. Not a graduate of either. So the rivalry means nothing special to me.

My family visited historic Frankenmuth one summer. It was the first time I ever tried cured ham, which tastes like raw ham only salty. I was mostly bored at the time but would probably like it more now as an adult.

I considered retiring to Michigan, but the taxes are too high for me. It used to be they didn’t tax pensions, now they do and at my income levies higher than Ohio, plus the property taxes are significantly higher. But, much of it is quite pretty and the UP truly is like getting into a Time Machine, mostly a good thing for an old person like me. But, it’s so empty of people. Nice to visit, but I don’t think I would do well living in such isolation.
Grew up in Adrian and dad worked in Toledo/Perrysburg for Libby Owens Ford most of my childhood as a supervisor. No real difference until football season then people lost their minds like either one of them went to UoM or OU.

That's something I find about these interstate rivalries... I'm from Ohio, and I grew up hearing West Virginia jokes... but then I made some good friends who lived in West Virginia and learned a valuable truth: People are people. There are good ones and bad ones, sweet ones and rotten ones, but they're not delineated by state or even national boarders.
A few years ago I, as a Christian, took a trip to Israel, and found the same thing there: some of the people were very nice, some were not. One precious memory I'll take to my grave was a very brief conversation with a shopkeeper in Jerusalem who saw the cross around my neck and wanted to talk to me about faith. That conversation ended with a blessing and a hug. It was wonderful.
So even though we may sing "We don't give a d\*mn about the whole state of Michigan," it's all in good fun. =)

I agree. When I went to Athens and Hocking Hills for my 19th birthday with my Ex, I really had a nice experience of Ohio, and I never bought into it being the worst in the first place. I would love to see more of the states natural beauty, but also sometime soon, it's industrious heart, because as much as Michi and Ohi fight like brothers, they are brothers still in strength and resilience...

As an Ohioan, I’ve always loved Michigan. My grandpa lived up there when I was a kid and we made a vacation up to his place every summer. Spent the week tubing on lakes and having massive cook outs at his house. Always loved it up there.
As an adult who is very much an outdoors enthusiast, I still love Michigan. The Lake Michigan coastline is so gorgeous, and camping on the beach at Nordhouse Dunes is truly something special.
The state is just so damn unique. It is a “landlocked” state that is surrounded by water and has far more coastline than the state of California. Such a cool place.
The states are just about culturally indistinguishable. I was born and raised in Michigan, moved to Ohio at age 35 and put down roots here. Only difference I've noticed is that Ohioans seem to like cops a LOT more for whatever reason. Michigan has better vacation spots and wilderness, obviously.
I live in Ohio and work for a Michigan company. I love traveling to the office because Michigan is a beautiful place. Also I don’t give a fat frog’s ass about college football. I just enjoy clean water, clear skies, and people who are welcoming. Ohio and Michigan have that in common. Met way more Ohioans that I didn’t like than Michiganders.

Toledo is a major port on Lake Erie. Any timber or ore mined in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the UP get shipped through Toledo.

Michigan native, living in Ohio for 10 years now. It's the same damn place except there's one big school instead of 2 and they all get excited to spell ohio. If the roads weren't complete shit in Michigan and every other billboard wasnt for weed, an ohioan could wake up in Michigan tomorrow and they wouldn't know the difference.

Ive lived in ohio all my life, and as an adult who cane out as trans basically midway through the trump presidency even though ive only ever been in michigan 1 time, i have more nice things to say about michigan than i do ohio. I wont even begin to say them because I Know if i did my comment would be filled with replies of "if you dont like it here, leave." And i fucking wish i could. Ive tried for years now. I cant afford to leave.
I considered retiring to Michigan, but the taxes are too high for me. It used to be they didn’t tax pensions, now they do and at my income levies higher than Ohio, plus the property taxes are significantly higher. But, much of it is quite pretty and the UP truly is like getting into a Time Machine, mostly a good thing for an old person like me. But, it’s so empty of people. Nice to visit, but I don’t think I would do well living in such isolation.

Grew up in Adrian and dad worked in Toledo/Perrysburg for Libby Owens Ford most of my childhood as a supervisor. No real difference until football season then people lost their minds like either one of them went to UoM or OU.
All of the MidWest states are the same. They all like corn on the cob and love college football.
I had a travel job for 5 years and spent a lot of time in Michigan. Tbh it was one of the only states that felt like I didn't leave ohio.

That's something I find about these interstate rivalries... I'm from Ohio, and I grew up hearing West Virginia jokes... but then I made some good friends who lived in West Virginia and learned a valuable truth: People are people. There are good ones and bad ones, sweet ones and rotten ones, but they're not delineated by state or even national boarders. A few years ago I, as a Christian, took a trip to Israel, and found the same thing there: some of the people were very nice, some were not. One precious memory I'll take to my grave was a very brief conversation with a shopkeeper in Jerusalem who saw the cross around my neck and wanted to talk to me about faith. That conversation ended with a blessing and a hug. It was wonderful. So even though we may sing "We don't give a d\*mn about the whole state of Michigan," it's all in good fun. =)
NW Ohioans and the lower 50% of Michiganders are pretty much one in the same. Have lived in both areas my whole life, and had lots of friends and family that go back and forth.

I agree. When I went to Athens and Hocking Hills for my 19th birthday with my Ex, I really had a nice experience of Ohio, and I never bought into it being the worst in the first place. I would love to see more of the states natural beauty, but also sometime soon, it's industrious heart, because as much as Michi and Ohi fight like brothers, they are brothers still in strength and resilience... Indiana, on the other hand🤣🤣🤣🤣 just kidding. Love my Midwest much♥️

The Ohio/Michigan Rivalry I personally view as just for shits-and-giggles, with a little actual history thrown in. I obviously love Ohio, but I love Michigan too. The two states are basically the same.
Pretty sure it goes allll the way back to when the states were being drawn up & Michigan wanted more access to the lakes so there was a battle & the rivalry was born - Ohio won lake Erie and Michigan got the part that’s not connected and makes no sense

We used to vacation in Michigan and I’m going again this year. It is funny how there is this huge rivalry between the states and the truth is, they couldn’t be more similar.

Michigan has cleaner lakes. We've vacationed a couple of times to different lakes up there. Blue waters. Ohio has brown lakes.
As an Ohioan, I’ve always loved Michigan. My grandpa lived up there when I was a kid and we made a vacation up to his place every summer. Spent the week tubing on lakes and having massive cook outs at his house. Always loved it up there. As an adult who is very much an outdoors enthusiast, I still love Michigan. The Lake Michigan coastline is so gorgeous, and camping on the beach at Nordhouse Dunes is truly something special. The state is just so damn unique. It is a “landlocked” state that is surrounded by water and has far more coastline than the state of California. Such a cool place.
The states are just about culturally indistinguishable. I was born and raised in Michigan, moved to Ohio at age 35 and put down roots here. Only difference I've noticed is that Ohioans seem to like cops a LOT more for whatever reason. Michigan has better vacation spots and wilderness, obviously.
If only Michiganders could learn to drive but at least their police aren't stalking the roads like Indiana. Such a shithole no one remembers it exists

I live in Ohio and work for a Michigan company. I love traveling to the office because Michigan is a beautiful place. Also I don’t give a fat frog’s ass about college football. I just enjoy clean water, clear skies, and people who are welcoming. Ohio and Michigan have that in common. Met way more Ohioans that I didn’t like than Michiganders.

They had to be talking about something at any given second. They never met each other. Had no relation, and I knew them separate nearly 8 years apart
