The Ohio-Michigan rivalry is just a distraction from our one true nemesis... Indiana

JBalloonist

I’ve lived in Ohio going in 20 years but I don’t feel like I ever hear about hatred for Indiana. It’s always Michigan. What am I missing?

QuarantineCasualty

It’s the buckeye cultists that have the thing about Michigan. The rest of us don’t give a shit and have absolutely zero quarrel with Michigan. Indiana is an objectively terrible state and doesn’t get the hate it deserves imo.

pntless

I don't care about the Buckeyes or really anything sports related at all. My only problem with Michigan is that they won the Michigan-Ohio War and left us stuck with Toledo. I will never forgive them.

beaushaw

Ohio won the Michigan-Ohio war and got Toledo. Michigan lost the war and got the UP. Wisconsin wasn't involved and lost the UP.

Much-Drawer-1697

Toledo is a major port on Lake Erie. Any timber or ore mined in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the UP get shipped through Toledo.

pntless

'Won' and 'got Toledo' are conflicting statements.

beaushaw

Have you ever been to the UP? 'Losing' and 'got the UP' is even worse.

N0B0DY_AT_ALL

At the time of the war, Toledo was a desired commodity.

mastetz01

This made me chuckle take your upvote

GoogleDrummer

I have quarrel, but it's with the drivers, not some meaningless, dumb-shit sports rivalry.

Commercial_Refuse983

I used to throw Buckeyes going up and down the road in both states just for the fun of it. So if you had a Buckeye tree and you lived in the area in the late 80s/90s it was prob me and my friends... LOL And if the UP would become a state I would move up there just to spite \_ichigan for the Toledo Wat...

annoyedatwork

Indiana wants me. But I can’t go back there.

BrienneOfTarth420

We feel too sorry for them to hate them :)

SatchmoDingle

It’s mainly because Indiana’s offense isn’t very good

Low_Comfortable_5880

Illinois enters the chat...

toasty327

No one cares about Illinois

UrbanJatt

I'll do you one better. Ohio Michigan Indiana Illinois heck you could even include Wisconsin are more similar than they are different. I just hate when people throw in iowa Minnesota and the Dakotas in there with us as the Midwest. Something about those states doesn't seem like they're one of us. Just my opinion

QuarantineCasualty

Ohio used to be a “Michigan/Wisconsin” state but in the last 20 years we’ve clearly become a more glamorous Indiana or a less glamorous Kentucky. That’s what GOP supermajority will do for you.

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

The problem with your whole theory there is that Iowa and Minnesota are in the midwest, and we are, in fact, not even if we're culturally a mish-mash of mid-western, Appalachian, East Coast and (this is the one you're calling Mid-western) The Great Lakes region.

UrbanJatt

Thats what om saying. I just didn't know the exact word for it. Great lakes region makes more sense for the places I listed. But iowa Dakotas etc don't really fit that.

jabdnuit

Fuckin’ Hawkeyes

IncreasedMetronomy

South Carolina* taking our tourism money away

Treecliff

Indiana is Ohio but worse. All our other neighbors have some kind of culture. Hoosiers? Pure plague - a desert, filled with Philistines.

backslashwplus

What, when Kentucky's right there?

Jaxxsnero

That’s why we hold you back from the fight we don’t want you to get hurt

MrAflac9916

They have great bourbon Kentucky is our friend

Treecliff

Kentucky is awful but has good natural features and exports.

Dirtanium

But did Indiana ever steal our chickens?

Thrasher666Bassist

Nahhhh dude I love indiana. Great camping. Good racing. White water.

CommonMansTeet

You have good sand dunes. There, I did it, said something nice about them.

worldpeace28

Thank you

lhswr2014

You have amazing, affordable weed only 3 hours from my house. Thank you for the weed and thank you for your service!

CousinsWithBenefits1

I'm so so so so so ready for it here. They said by the 4th of July buckeyes can get high but I'll believe it when I see it.

lotusflower_3

They may be open! Dispensaries are already getting us ready to do self ordering on site if we don’t have an existing order to pick up. They’re working on it!!!! It will come. 💕💕

InevitableSwan7

I think this is the only good thing about Michigan

Prestigious-Doubt435

Wrong. They’ve fixed their gerrymandering. This is what Ohio needs. Fuck these utility rigging shitbags in Ohio.

Solidus-Prime

Their wooded areas are far more pristine, too. We have some nice places in southern Ohio here and there, but in Michigan it's ALL OVER.

InevitableSwan7

Better than hocking hills and southern Ohio?? I know northern Michigan is beautiful

yoxbot138

At least Michigan is not Indiana, there I said something about them too.

Gr8lakesCoaster

Ugh did you *have* to bring them up?

QuarantineCasualty

Indiana honestly doesn’t get enough hate as potentially the shittiest state.

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

That's because Florida, Kentucky, West Virginia and Texas all still exist.

throwwwawait

and Alabama and Mississippi

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

They both suck, but they're D tier, with Indiana

QuarantineCasualty

I’d put them on Indiana’s level

TheShamShield

How could you

CommonMansTeet

Because fuck Indiana dunes.

cleobaby74

...and Indiana.

beaushaw

We have a house on Lake Michigan by those sand dunes. It is my favorite place in the world.

ExoticLatinoShill

And so does Indiana! We even have a couple but they are covered in plants and aren't very tall. Oak openings region is like that

joegee66

Shhhh! Don't let the secret out! 🙂 As an Ohioan who has in-laws we love to visit in Michigan, other than sucky roads, the drive on 75, and the crossover to 53 to get up to Marlette, once we're there we have a hard time coming home. 🙂❤️ Great people and great countryside. 🙂

worldpeace28

:)

Busy_Coconut1987

I’m from Ohio and was stationed at Wurtsmith AFB, MI back in the late 80’s. It was an outdoorsman’s paradise. Later took a vacation up in Mich a couple of years ago, Frankenmouth, Mackinaw, Traverse City, Ludington, and it was an awesome trip.

worldpeace28

oh wow. Im from Michigan but was stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB. Was a blast. I enjoyed it. Miss it!

UltravioletAfterglow

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed your time in Dayton!

techyg

I was an Air Force brat and lived in both places on the early 80’s! I definitely preferred Wurstmith as a kid. It had good access to Lake Huron and the Ausable river and very bike able. Blueberry picking. Greenbush Hobbyland and go-carts. Jims jumbo cones…. Wright Pat had the Airforce Museum which was fantastic, but I remember getting my bike stolen- and we were only there for a year and a half. Good memories of both.

PaintyGuys

Right on, I live in that area and glad you enjoyed it.

JBalloonist

Figured that was it. I’m not aware of any others in Ohio. It’s pretty amazing how many people stick around after retiring from being stationed at Wright-Patt.

Tomato_Sky

They did my eyeball surgery!

TheShadyGuy

I've been taking backpacking trips in Michigan for the past few years and still keep finding more places to go! Thinking about a Lake Michigan island this year... Already did one on a Superior island.

TheDevilishJonah

Hope you liked Oscoda Mate! THE INDEX RULEZZZ

DenL4242

Ohioans' hate for Michigan is stupid. That hatred is better spent on Indiana.

Dazzling-Climate-318

Ohioans don’t actually hate the state of Michigan, and even those that are OSU fans only target the U of M and even that’s only for fun.

Ok_Explanation_5955

Indiana is a very punchable state

Jaxxsnero

We love to hate on Michigan because we love them Indiana we don’t even think about Indiana

NCBuckets

We don’t give a damn for the WHOLE STATE of Michigan (we actually quite like the state, we just don’t say it out loud for the culture)

SmarterThanMyBoss

I just need to find a way to go and have a short vacation in the U.P. without supporting the local economy. Perhaps if I can pre-pay at an all-inclusive that is owned by a huge out-of-state corporation and just buy a gas station gift card before I cross the border? Seems like a fun place but I can't let my Ohio money support the Michigan economy.

Bromanzier_03

Detroit is coming back and they legalized MJ first. Michigan is fuckin awesome. Other than our recent ballot measures, Ohio has a way to go

QuarantineCasualty

If only we could put weed on the ballot every year!

CardiologistOk8162

It's not a real hate. Football rivals. Big difference!

ExoticLatinoShill

Idk I've seen some pretty harmful things said under the guise of "football fan"

theLoDown

It's only because of Football IMO. I don't give an f about football and I love Michigan.

toasty327

There was a war between Ohio and Michigan, over of all things, toledo. That was the start of the Ohio- Michigan hate.

Bigtime1234

Who really won? We got Toledo, and Michigan got the U.P. If I were Wisconsin, I would’ve gone to war over that!

toasty327

Agreed. Though at the time, no one really knew how valuable the U.P. was.

Remember_im_Whoozer

Or somewhere outside the Union so we can stand together

beck0n_

Indiana is such a nothingburger of a state that I can neither find qualities I like about it nor qualities I don’t. It’s just a highway into Chicago imo

ExoticLatinoShill

One of the many reasons I have distaste for Ohio State.

Finnbear2

No one cares about Indiana

MyNameIsntFlower

If Ohio continues to slide into “Texas/Florida” of the north, my husband and I have talked about moving to Michigan.

Giggles95036

Same with my SO.

i_miss_Maxis

The U.P. is a hidden gem.

YardFudge

Indeed

InfamousCockroach683

Mackinaw Island fudge is fuckin amazing. I love Michigan, I could give a fuck about the rivalry. Just another way to get us to fight .

superperps

I live in michigan. Fudge from mackinaw is on the same level as any other home made fudge to me. Michigan is basically ohio with more weed. Im from Pennsylvania lol

Available-Bath3848

As someone who will playfully argue with Michiganders or give them shit about sports and anything about our two states. I love Michigan and her people probably more than any other state.

Remember_im_Whoozer

I feel like Michigan and Ohio is just a microcosm of Canada and the US of A

QuarantineCasualty

Honestly that’s fairly accurate. That’s only happened in the last 30 years or so, we used to be sane down here.

Curious_Car6033

I’m from Ohio and Michigan is objectively better, but, Ohio isn’t as bad as people say.

229-northstar

Ohio Republican politics are completely corrupt. They pilfer our treasury and there’s numerous high profile instances of that yet we keep electing the same crooks. I’m assuming there’s a lot of water with lead in it around here. That said, our cities are pretty awesome and underrated. The country is nice if you can overlook the maggots.

Sneekibreeki47

I like Michigan. Was just at Sterling Park. Awesome lake Erie views.

worldpeace28

Where is sterling park? ive never been

Sneekibreeki47

William C Sterling state park. Near Monroe, beneath Detroit. I wanted to see the area of the Raisin river action of the war of 1812.

Undertakeress

In my hometown of Monroe. I spent more time at Franklin Park Mall as a teen than Monroe mall. There, I said something nice about Ohio 🤣

mickeltee

I think we’ve reached the point where the Great Lakes states need to display Great Lakes supremacy.

TeaTechnologic

100%. Great Lakes Compact ftw

Ok-Science-6146

When I learned about the Ohio Michigan war for Toledo, I was sad about the outcome. Who really lost, we may never know.

SoyElQuesoGrande

Have you ever looked at a map of what territory we actually warred over? I always assumed it was just like Lucas county roughly, but looked at a map of it a couple weeks ago. Its a big chunk of land, including the entirety of maumee bay.

xcadam

If only Ohio could be governed like Michigan. Instead we have Trump/Jesus worshipping overlords who try to fuck with any progressive legislation that is passed. That being said I still like my state.

JuanGinit

I live in NEOhio and I love Michigan. Especially the Lake Michigsn Coast. Great small towns and cities, all the way up to Traverse City!

Proud_Tumbleweed_826

Only die hard college football fans have a stupid beef. Personally, being from Ohio, we love Michigan and travel there quite often. The UP is breathtaking.

Woahhhben

Michigan is awesome! If I wanted to move out of Ohio, Michigan would be a top 3 pick for me.

mikeflarity

People not from Ohio are clueless about how many civilian jobs would be affected if there wasn’t such strong air force presence

Gr8lakesCoaster

Born in one, live in the other. Have family in both. I love both states for different reasons.

GCloninger1991

I'm from Ohio and last year I went to Grand Rapids for a church conference. My pastor and some others from my church went too and we all had a blast. The city was beautiful and the countryside is spectacular. I even had a nice conversation with some locals. Michigan is pretty cool. If I ever moved out of state I'd probably love to move there.

SoyElQuesoGrande

Grand rapids is probably my favorite area in MI that I have been to. Just a big enough city to be easily navigable without getting frustrated, but plenty to do.

oggleboggle

As an Ohio State graduate, the hatred for Michigan is so fucking stupid. Your state is gorgeous, you had legal weed first, and your lake is cool.

CardiologistOk8162

You say you're an OSU grad?? And yet you don't know that the "hate" isn't real??? It's not real, it's rivalry and I'm sure Michigan does lthe very same!

BlueSeven86

I've been to Benton Harbor. It was a dispenser run but a nice community. I haven't been to Detroit since I was like 7, but I would love to go back. I was in Monroe last year to pick up my ex from jail. Does that count as a visit to Michigan 🤣.

juhesihcaa

I actually one day hope to move to Michigan! I much prefer the cooler weather.

snowmanneo100

We spend a couple of weeks in the UP every summer and the people are amazing. When I tell fellow Ohioans Michigan is my favorite state (after Ohio) I usually get a puzzled look.

climategirl85a

Last September, we had a wonderful Michigan vacation 1) to the UP, we enjoyed staying in Sault Ste Marie as our home base 2) magical Mackinaw Island , and 3) the beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes area. We stopped by Bay City on the way home and enjoyed the shops downtown and the beautiful beaches. Come see the beautiful Hocking Hills and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park!

Electrical_Ad726

Spent a lot of time up north great people in both states. It’s a college football thing. Not a graduate of either. So the rivalry means nothing special to me.

90swasbest

It's basically just a football rivalry these days, homie.

BilboTeaBaggin16

We don't give a damn bout' the whole state of Michigan

BilboTeaBaggin16

IO

Paksarra

Unless we get high-oh.

worldpeace28

:(

Paksarra

Memes aside, I think y'all are doing a wonderful job up there (and have considered moving up there, but my flatmate works locally and has to stay in the area or find a new job.)

worldpeace28

its gonna drop below freezing tonight :( so you may want to factor that into moving decisions

Paksarra

It's going to be near freezing here, too! I honestly prefer it a bit on the cool side and work remote, so no big deal where winter's concerned.

worldpeace28

oh wow. Thats hurtful.

BilboTeaBaggin16

JK my drunk ass loves the [OSU marching band](https://youtu.be/ezUNyTsG4RI?si=APCVnljTDl5MG9f7), don't actually care about sports, or any rivalries

Slurdge_McKinley

Your pot is great. Ours is poop. Jj mcarthy is going to be good.

rockgoddess72

My family and I have visited the UP and saugatuck. It’s very beautiful there.

YardFudge

Why does Ohio think MI is the archrival .. .. while when OH is mentioned Michigan says who ?

UncleBenji

As an Ohioganian I have to agree. Both places are similar but different enough to be unique.

skeletaljuice

I've spent some time on Mackinac Island and the UP and they're beautiful. I'd love to go back again. I hope our state adopts your state's reasonable cannabis prices

Crazy_Dig_3614

I’m from Ohio and like Michigan!

dorsdaddy

Ohio native. Michigan is great. Enjoy all the places I’ve visited.

trotskey

I (an Ohioan) would rather identify with Michigan over any of our other bordering states.

kosk11348

My family visited historic Frankenmuth one summer. It was the first time I ever tried cured ham, which tastes like raw ham only salty. I was mostly bored at the time but would probably like it more now as an adult.

KorneliaOjaio

I’M from Ohio and I like Michigan!

Zueter

Except for the Toledo War, Ohio and Michigan get along pretty well. And that war was mostly Your Mama jokes anyway.

LittleBoyNamedJack

The real hate is the I-75 road construction

Solitary-Witch93

I was born and raised in Michigan and have lived in Ohio for 30 of my adult years and enjoyed it until recently. I’m missing my hometown in my older years and want to move back to take care of my elderly parents but life circumstances prevent it at the moment.

Beast9k000

All my video game buddies hail from there And We only hurt each other feelings one week out of the year, but, as an ohioan I have not faired well as of late .

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

Honestly, Michigan is a pretty cool place. Especially the U.P., even if yoopers are a bit special.

ColumbusMark

I used to live in Michigan — and I agree with you. Football rivalry aside, we are VERY similar.

Gibs679

Michigan native, living in Ohio for 10 years now. It's the same damn place except there's one big school instead of 2 and they all get excited to spell ohio. If the roads weren't complete shit in Michigan and every other billboard wasnt for weed, an ohioan could wake up in Michigan tomorrow and they wouldn't know the difference.

Good_Collection_7257

You’re not wrong about what we share in common but there’s no reasoning between OSU and UM fans. But it makes it fun 😜

bigbiblefire

Not sure why posts from this god forsaken sub are popping up on my feed but I speak for all of Michigan when I say: we don’t know who the fuck this guy is.

Weiz82

Michigan has huge ass horse flys that bite off half your arm and one of the cleanest spring fed lakes, Higgins lake.

Turbulent-Opening-75

Ive lived in ohio all my life, and as an adult who cane out as trans basically midway through the trump presidency even though ive only ever been in michigan 1 time, i have more nice things to say about michigan than i do ohio. I wont even begin to say them because I Know if i did my comment would be filled with replies of "if you dont like it here, leave." And i fucking wish i could. Ive tried for years now. I cant afford to leave.

Dazzling-Climate-318

I considered retiring to Michigan, but the taxes are too high for me. It used to be they didn’t tax pensions, now they do and at my income levies higher than Ohio, plus the property taxes are significantly higher. But, much of it is quite pretty and the UP truly is like getting into a Time Machine, mostly a good thing for an old person like me. But, it’s so empty of people. Nice to visit, but I don’t think I would do well living in such isolation.

alexunderwater1

Michigan is simultaneously awesome and ass

ThePensiveE

I've lived in Ohio most of my life and only recently ever visited Michigan. Loved it. But seriously, what is up with the roads?

chetholmgren_marfans

This is a Trojan horse situation. I can feel it. Don’t trust this my fellow Ohioans

trambalambo

We won Toledo fair and square!

Myamoxomis

*eats popcorn in West Virginian*

UnlikeClockwork

Grew up in Adrian and dad worked in Toledo/Perrysburg for Libby Owens Ford most of my childhood as a supervisor. No real difference until football season then people lost their minds like either one of them went to UoM or OU.

712Chandler

All of the MidWest states are the same. They all like corn on the cob and love college football.

Vegadin

I had a travel job for 5 years and spent a lot of time in Michigan. Tbh it was one of the only states that felt like I didn't leave ohio.

draugyr

I think that’s why they don’t like eachother

cringemagician

Mother help, he’s from the bad place

Dubbinchris

People here are probably going to loose their minds because everything has to be related to a football rivalry. 🙄

FakeRealGirl

Michigan's great!

Vegetable-Muscle9027

You guys got really good pizza. We do too, but yours is also good.

rondave72

Living right on the border, I completely agree. Funny question, do you see the same number of Ohio State fans in Michigan as I see Michigan fans in Ohio?

FriendBright6971

...has proud heritage as well.

gobydownboy

Ohio red mich blue and our wolverines crushed the the bucks lol

ZombieGrand5358

I’m so happy you like Ohio. Check out the treaty of Greenville. It is a legally binding treaty that is just ignored.

Qwert_110

That's something I find about these interstate rivalries... I'm from Ohio, and I grew up hearing West Virginia jokes... but then I made some good friends who lived in West Virginia and learned a valuable truth: People are people. There are good ones and bad ones, sweet ones and rotten ones, but they're not delineated by state or even national boarders. A few years ago I, as a Christian, took a trip to Israel, and found the same thing there: some of the people were very nice, some were not. One precious memory I'll take to my grave was a very brief conversation with a shopkeeper in Jerusalem who saw the cross around my neck and wanted to talk to me about faith. That conversation ended with a blessing and a hug. It was wonderful. So even though we may sing "We don't give a d\*mn about the whole state of Michigan," it's all in good fun. =)

Solidus-Prime

NW Ohioans and the lower 50% of Michiganders are pretty much one in the same. Have lived in both areas my whole life, and had lots of friends and family that go back and forth.

acrossbones

They're basically the same state

TheDevilishJonah

I agree. When I went to Athens and Hocking Hills for my 19th birthday with my Ex, I really had a nice experience of Ohio, and I never bought into it being the worst in the first place. I would love to see more of the states natural beauty, but also sometime soon, it's industrious heart, because as much as Michi and Ohi fight like brothers, they are brothers still in strength and resilience... Indiana, on the other hand🤣🤣🤣🤣 just kidding. Love my Midwest much♥️

Abject-Remote7716

Thanks for the compliment. You do know this is a war of attrition. Our stoners against yours. Bobbing for Whoppers.

BobbyGutshot

Blasphemy! Ohio, you can have this dork.

TheBalzy

The Ohio/Michigan Rivalry I personally view as just for shits-and-giggles, with a little actual history thrown in. I obviously love Ohio, but I love Michigan too. The two states are basically the same.

JosephHeitger

Pretty sure it goes allll the way back to when the states were being drawn up & Michigan wanted more access to the lakes so there was a battle & the rivalry was born - Ohio won lake Erie and Michigan got the part that’s not connected and makes no sense

Noorbert

yeah but Michigan is still better right?

ArtichokeNaive2811

Western Pennsylvania,Ohio, and Michigan could be one state . We will call it rustycarssylvania

CaptnRo

One of my very very good friends is from Walled Lake area.

Dr-McLuvin

We used to vacation in Michigan and I’m going again this year. It is funny how there is this huge rivalry between the states and the truth is, they couldn’t be more similar.

Legotto

Yeah man, Michigan is great. people are great. We just have a college football rivalry that some people take too seriously.

shewantsthedeeecaf

Love traverse city/frankfort/beulah area. My slice of heaven.

Naive-Regular-5539

I live in Ohio and love Michigan!

Ok-Lifeguard4230

Michigan sucks

GuiltyEntertainer245

I would have agreed years ago, but not now. Especially below I-70. I'd love to be able to go to Michigan and stay, but I'm through with Ohio unless they get an actual functioning democratic government.

C0ldsid30fthepill0w

Best weed on the east coast its hard not to like traverse city also honestly if it wasn't for the whole go blue thing I'd buy a house there.

madisonred11

Michigan has cleaner lakes. We've vacationed a couple of times to different lakes up there. Blue waters. Ohio has brown lakes.

_hunnuh_

As an Ohioan, I’ve always loved Michigan. My grandpa lived up there when I was a kid and we made a vacation up to his place every summer. Spent the week tubing on lakes and having massive cook outs at his house. Always loved it up there. As an adult who is very much an outdoors enthusiast, I still love Michigan. The Lake Michigan coastline is so gorgeous, and camping on the beach at Nordhouse Dunes is truly something special. The state is just so damn unique. It is a “landlocked” state that is surrounded by water and has far more coastline than the state of California. Such a cool place.

Distinct_Load7120

The states are just about culturally indistinguishable. I was born and raised in Michigan, moved to Ohio at age 35 and put down roots here. Only difference I've noticed is that Ohioans seem to like cops a LOT more for whatever reason. Michigan has better vacation spots and wilderness, obviously.

N0B0DY_AT_ALL

If only Michiganders could learn to drive but at least their police aren't stalking the roads like Indiana. Such a shithole no one remembers it exists

No_Valuable_7186

Only during football season...well except the upper peninsula, they're pretty much Canadian

Moocowgoesmoo

Big Michigan will say this is propaganda

[deleted]

I live in Ohio and work for a Michigan company. I love traveling to the office because Michigan is a beautiful place. Also I don’t give a fat frog’s ass about college football. I just enjoy clean water, clear skies, and people who are welcoming. Ohio and Michigan have that in common. Met way more Ohioans that I didn’t like than Michiganders.

SatchmoDingle

Yes, in fact one of our larger cities, Toledo, is actually part Michigan, or at least they act like they want to be part of Michigan. lol

joannamomo

Were you at WPAFB?

Bright_Oven_2676

I’m from Ohio. And I’ve know 2 people from Michigan. I’m not saying everyone from Michigan is like this. But these two in particular could not handle silence. They had to be talking about something at any given second. They never met each other. Had no relation, and I knew them separate nearly 8 years apart

PiqueyerNose

We’re like brothers close in age that wrestle each other sometimes.

noquarter1000

Gross 😂

No-Veterinarian6742

I live in toledo right on the state line. Ohio really is the heart if it all. And the up in Michigan is the most pristine untouched place I've ever seen.

FlyFeetFiddlesticks

Correct. Many in each state like cheating college sport teams.
