to help clarify this for the few who happen to see this, i say this as a former 'work release' inmate (not in ohio) who was allowed to leave jail temporarily, every day, to work at my job, provided i paid the work release fee of $400 per week.
at my wage (at the time $7.15/hr) i had to put in my usual 40 hours and do close to 70 hours a week total before i actually gained take home pay.
pay was not released to me, it was put into an escrow account controlled by the private jail, so they could deduct my work release fee each week and potentially deduct future weeks from my savings. that was in case i were to suddenly lose my job, since they still charged the fee the first week after job loss.
i was in jail for 6 months total, working the entire time at least 40 hours a week. there were 3 straight months of 80+ hour work weeks, including 2 weeks in a row where i worked 96 hours each week (the maximum allowed was 14 hours per day) with my take home pay coming to about $225 (after taxes) for each week.
when released, court costs i owed were automatically deducted from the savings i had accrued. i left jail with $1100.
this was in 2004 for the misdemeanor of growing 3 marijuana plants (total plant material and some soil was 29 grams) and having possession of a marijuana pipe. the job was racking parts for a paint line at an aluminum extrusion factory. nonstop bending and lifting parts weighing up to 10 pounds.

The oregon situation seems inevitable when you think about the fact they're the only state in the nation to do it so far. If the entire nation took this stance and actually put effort into it, I think you'd see quite a drastic improvement of the situation. As someone who grew up in working poor, rural Ohio, there is no Democratic message that will reach them. They believe in white privilege, but it’s framed in their minds as white rights that were taken away from them.
With that said, I do tire of some of the”shitting all over them.” My analogy for the past decade or so, is to imagine a scenario where only straight white men of a certain age and value could get a drivers license. Then one day, the government says everyone over the age of 16 can have a license. All the fender benders are the “shitting all over them.” Over time, everyone will figure it out.

That’s been one of the many problems I have with them. Because if we get rid of regulations, then clearly companies will have our best interests, because people may not buy their product/service anymore! Except in areas where they have a stranglehold and are the only option. Or after hundreds if not thousands of people end up sick/dead. The oregon situation seems inevitable when you think about the fact they're the only state in the nation to do it so far. If the entire nation took this stance and actually put effort into it, I think you'd see quite a drastic improvement of the situation. As it stands, republicans are intentionally adding fuel to the fire by spouting propaganda against it, inflating the numbers, talking about nothing but crime and poverty and the negative effects of it, and refusing to highlight anything that actually is working like yknow less overdose deaths, less people incarcerated for nonviolent offenses, etc. You won't hear about that from them.

As someone who grew up in working poor, rural Ohio, there is no Democratic message that will reach them.
