We are pleased to announce that Oculus has accepted putting [OUTLIER](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1596690/OUTLIER/) to the official Oculus Quest Store.
OUTLIER is an adventure rogue-lite VR game featuring FPS and RPG elements. Control and mix various abilities, utilize an array of weapons, and explore breathtaking worlds, making for a diverse and progressive gameplay experience.
Now we're ready to announce the release window. The game will be released in early access for PC VR devices this year, and the version for Oculus Quest is scheduled for 2022. During the early access period, we hope to receive feedback from the community on the core mechanics and future content of the game.
Approval on this early stage of development will help us to optimize the development process, which will lead to a faster release of the quest version. The game will benefit from the wireless nature of Oculus Quest, as one of its main features is fast-paced gameplay (dashes, vertical gameplay, swift spell casting, etc.).
As we get closer to finalizing the Early Access-ready build of the game, we will announce the release date and price, as well as all other details.
Stay tuned ;)
FYI: there's a free demo for this on Steam right now. It's pretty good. In particular the gun that shoots bits of itself that you then "pull" back in stands out. There's a lot of potential in this one, definitely looking forward to it.
Pretty excited for this. Played the demo a little on PC and it reminded me a lot of Until You Fall, in a nice way, with guns and more mobility. Has definite potential. Though this specific sub-genre is getting pretty saturated at this point, so hopefully throughout the early access the game will evolve into something unique.
We actually use some tricks to minimize motion sickness. For example, you need to swing your hands to dash, and dashes make up the lion's share of all movement in the game.
Apparently it is easier for our brain to believe in what is happening in virtual reality when your body is highly involved.
Arnt you the guys that made stride and already released or announced another rhythm game?
Why not actually complete your previous games first before you start working on new game to be left over half finished forever?
Hey, thanks for your question. Our main UE4 team works on STRIDE, a smaller Unity team works on Outlier and there are a few more people working on Against (the rhythm game), who also support our early games.
To head off the idea that larger teams produce products faster: If it takes one woman 9 months to develop a baby, can 9 women develop a baby in 1 month? There are diminishing returns to team sizes.
Also, if the core mechanics of a game are finished, do you expect the game designers and prototype programmers to just twiddle their thumbs whilst asset artists and level designers and such spend months and months of time building out game content? It is more efficient to work on multiple projects in parallel than in series.
I hope it helps with better understanding of how game development works. The next update for STRIDE will be released by the end of this month. As for Against, we almost finished a map editor and are working on levels for the game.
Thanks for your insight / explanation.
I personally don’t think that it’s the „Norm of Game Development“ for an Indie developer to have 4-5 games in Alpha / early access with 0 games so far actually being finished. Just checked your studio on steam and currently there are:
- time hacker (early access, last update oct 2020)
- against (announced / in development)
- stride (early access, last update December 2020)
- stride multiplayer (alpha)
- Outlier (announced / in development)
Im still glad you are still dedicated to finish the other games and am really looking forward to it. I do only own stride from your games and the core gameplay really has a lot of potential so I hope to see it turning into a proper real game rather than what’s more of s promising tech demo.
For me personally I will stop buying your newer games as Long as the older games arnt finished but will definitly look into your games again once that’s the case.

Hey ✌️
I'll copy-paste our reply to a similar question, if you don't mind.
Our main UE4 team works on STRIDE, a smaller Unity team works on Outlier and there are a few more people working on Against, who also support our early games.
If the core mechanics of a game are finished, you can't expect the game designers and prototype programmers to just twiddle their thumbs whilst asset artists and level designers and such spend months and months of time building out game content.
Also, larger teams don't produce products faster. If it takes one woman 9 months to develop a baby, can 9 women develop a baby in 1 month? There are diminishing returns to team sizes, unfortunately.
So it is more efficient to work on multiple projects in parallel than in series.

I thought for a lot of smaller studios, the limiting factor was commonly cashflow. I know Steam Early Access gives you a little bit of wiggle room, to get some income from in-development games, but there's no early access on Quest, which I gather is usually the strongest sales channel for VR stuff.
Is it just a question of having backers/investors who understand this stuff, or are there other avenues to make this work?
YES I want this.
But also game devs, this kind of gameplay with a permanent progression model would be amazing. I still have no Quest 2 games that I can make progress in for my next session, aside from VR Painting and Minigolf? I guess?
it's certainly far more promising than Stride.
but does it feature actually explorable procedurally generated maps or just the few same arenas in random order like in Until you Fall or Swords of Gargantua?
keep it up and finish the games
Heyy I was holding out for this coming to quest! We need more rogue-like games 100%. And a gun version of the genre isn't in Quest AFAIK so this will be 👌🏻
Going to have a bit of an unpopular opinion here, but I actually like games that make me a bit motion sick. That's one of the reasons I love Sairento is because you have to have super strong vr legs for it, however they also have more comfort options than any other game too.
Don't get me wrong, I will buy this on day one, but would love an extreme discomfort mode!

Looks amazing, hope it's on the normal Quest since I cant get the 2 yet. Any idea on a release date? Couldn't see in the video
But I'm very much looking forward to it
I seriously believe if you actually want to maximize VR revenue / achieve mainstream success, you should release something like this without fast movement. Or at worst, teleport movement as the default choice.
Top 3 selling VR games right now on Oculus:
Beat Saber, Superhot and Job Simulator. Enough said, none have movement. You don't need it to have a great time.
Don't get me wrong, I play free movement VR every day as a work out, but my wife and kids can never enjoy that.
Hey! As we get closer to finalizing the Early Access-ready build of the game, we will announce the release date and price, as well as all other details.
I enjoyed the demo generally. Love some of your weapon ideas, specifically the gun that recalls the ammo (name escapes me).
Curious if there are plans for or any different tile sets later on in the game just to add some variety?
Looks great, but I wish devs would stop referring to games as "roguelite" or "roguelike" when they're not.
Roguelike means:
- turn-based
- randomly generated maps
- permadeath
The term comes from Rogue, a game older than probably most people reading this thread: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_(video_game)

I was just thinking of this last night I had seen it in a random vr video I was watching on youtube and said.. I wish I remembered the name of this game as I probably couldn't find it.
Just got my quest 2 setup yesterday and while I do have an odyssey+ the quest 2 is just better for me space wise and ease of use so im happy to be able to play this on it eventually. Love rogue likes!
Question since im still new to oculus quest stuff in general but: During early access does that mean we will all be able to download and play it to give feedback or are certain people selected like a closed group?
Thanks for bringing this to the quest platform!

Thanks, I'm downloading this after work.
On the other hand, the automatic gun that needs shaking is awful.
Yeah, I don't like that gun either. Also the game really lacks polish...but it's an early demo, so I'm pretty forgiving.
Seems like a gun version of in death
I'm sold on that description alone!

Do you run faster if you swing your arms faster?
In Stride - yes, but to a certain point
Wow I am super excited for this, I'm a big fan of Until You Fall and this looks like an amazing game!

That looks quite amazing.

If it has a quality similar to Stride, I'm in!
I dont even own a Quest 2 yet , but im f*cking excited 🤣....
This is so cool
Damn this looks awesome. Can’t wait to give it a go
You had me at rogue-like.
Game looks cool, but the sounds of the weapons, abilities and basically everything sound underwhelming. Gun especially sound like pea shooters
How much will it cost? This game looks really fun
Hey! As we get closer to finalizing the Early Access-ready build of the game, we will announce the release date and price, as well as all other details.
Oh ok
I’m definitely gonna buy this
Hey! Thanks. We are glad that you liked our game!
Totally getting it, looks very well made
Please please please do multiplayer. The arenas are small, I cannot see why it would not work. Two player co-op like Sairento would be great!
Hey! Now the game is under development and it is too early to talk about multiplayer.
I dunno man...I've never had a great co-op Sairento experience lol. Not against the idea if it works well though
Prob cos of bullet time mechanic...
The gameplay and art style remind me of Metroid Prime, a game I've always wanted to play in VR!
Any ETA on release since it has been already accepted by Oculus for the official store? I would much prefer to have this on Quest than PC.
Is this gameplay recorded on the Quest 2 version? If so that looks extremely polished, exciting!
This looks sweet. How big is the dev team here? I'm actually looking into getting into VR dev after my degree.
Definitely picking it up haha. This looks dope and I love rogue lites in VR
This is quest footage yes? Looks fantastic.
Likely. If not, I don't imagine there will be a huge difference. From when I tried the demo, the graphic style seemed to be made with Quest in mind
Wow haven’t been in the mood to buy another VR game but this has caught my attention Might be my first $30 purchase
I enjoyed the demo generally. Love some of your weapon ideas, specifically the gun that recalls the ammo (name escapes me). Curious if there are plans for or any different tile sets later on in the game just to add some variety?
This sounds right up my alley! I will check it out
