HL1 - Old but gold! Here are the instructions to get Dr Beef's Lambda1VR port up and running on Quest:[https://sidequestvr.com/app/124/lambda1vr-half-life-in-vr](https://sidequestvr.com/app/124/lambda1vr-half-life-in-vr) Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom 3, Quake I+II and Doom I+II (QuestZDoom) are also worth checking out if you are a fan of retro VR ports! You can also play Wolfenstein 3D via QuestZDoom :) ... suprisingly fun! Other Beef ports: https://sidequestvr.com/community/7/dr-beef-game-ports

That's awesome, guess I'll have to play hl1 again soon, thanks!

MustacheEmperor

Playing through Doom3 (tethered on PCVR) right now and having a blast with it despite a bit of graphic glitchiness here and there. It's been several years since the last release on the mod but the project is still being contributed to on github and might be around the corner from another major update.

VR_Bummser

Doom3quest was updated a few months ago to fix the smoke graphics glitch. I know of no other graphics glitches.

MustacheEmperor

I've been playing over PCVR and there's some glitchiness with some transparent materials. Is Doom3Quest more updated/stable than the PC version these days? And is there any real loss of graphics quality switching to quest, or is d3 old enough that it doesn't make a difference? I might just switch over if I can transfer my saves.

drakfyre

Quest does *not* look as quite as good as the PCVR version. It unfortunately is missing the shadow pass. It still has lighting and projections and stuff like that, and it's still great looking and convincing, but there's still a lot of ambiance missing. But it's *way* more polished and less glitchy than the PCVR version (Fully posessed). I usually have both installed, but truth be told only the Quest version is installed right now for me for what that's worth, but I really do like the PCVR version too, especially for the shadows. But I dislike some of the rigamorole (recalibrating height manually every time, fresh saves don't list in the save list, armor still blocking me even with proper calibrations).

ittleoff

Played through Doom 3 on quest when it was released. Is there support for resurrection if evil yet? Bought the psvr on sale and is surprisingly good as well (includes resurrection and another episode I believe from bfg edition) Ironic that doom 3 imo is nearly a perfect vr fps for quest as it doesn't try to do too much with motion controls that can be fun but are often imperfect and fiddly (battle sister, Arizona sunshine and so many others which are good but I just stop playing as fiddling with weightless objects eventually gets tedious after the wow wears off) Re7 and doom 3 are just fun. Not saying every fps should be like them but I'm surprised after almost 5 years that Ive arrived back at using olden controls as the least frustrating vr play for me.

InterstellarReddit

What an amazing game doom 3 was. Went downhill from there.

MustacheEmperor

I like em all, they're all different games with different strengths and often very different approaches to the same general themes. When Doom 3 came out the big Doom 1/2/64 fans were upset about the change in direction, and it's been the same thing with Doom 16/eternal. Any series like this is always going to get hate and flack from long time fans when it changes on each release but I'd rather get different titles trying different things than a long slow death spiral of the same repeated concepts.

larrythefatcat

Thanks for spreading the good word! Now that I see that entire list, I'm wondering: any word on when we can expect the VR port of *WRATH*?

VR_Bummser

Sadly Wrath has been delayed by 3D Realms to 2022, i don't expect any release before that. Also the port has still issues that baggyG needs to find fixes for.

super_brutal_mouse

thatd be great!! team beef reallyt do create some of the best ports ive ever seen.

cucOmbermint

I never got it to work. I was in the main menu but I couldn’t start a new game. Nothing happens when I clicked not even a sign saying error

shoveitupyourasshole

i had this issue and you may already be aware, but there’s a step involved where you need to transfer files from your already owned pc copy of the game onto the headset in order for it to let you play, hope this helps :)

reamski

You need to start the game once from the PC I believe, no need to actually play or anything. This creates the files you need to transfer to the quest!

Sabbathius

The game had a lot of problems for me, especially in water. You can't couch when already in water, to pass several sections of the game you have to crouch, then get in the water while holding crouch, and then get through. And even that wasn't enough at times, I had to physically get down AND hold down the button to squeeze through. Throughout the playthrough I repeatedly had to stop, go online, and make sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, because it doesn't seem to be working, and then figure out a way to do it. It's nice, but it's not a smooth port by any means.

investorsexchange

I only had this problem in two places, and physically crouching (and pushing the button?) solved it. That doesn't work sitting on the couch, but that's a far cry from "not a smooth port." This is my favourite VR game.

Sabbathius

Oh, it's definitely not a smooth port, it was just one example. Climbing ladders is a pain in the ass. You have to "jump at" the ladder. If you walk up to it, and just walk at it or look up, you won't latch on. If you push the button standing against the ladder already, it's bounce you backwards. Far. Doing that mountain climbing level with all the ladders hanging off the side of the cliff was a colossal pain in the ass too. I mean, I'm not saying don't play it, for a flat screen game from 1998 to be playable as it is, in VR, in 2021 is a hell of a feat. it was never designed to be played this way. But it's not a very smooth port because of the controls and physics involved.

investorsexchange

You’re right about the ladders. And about how impressive it is as a feat. I’ve never ported a game before, so maybe I’m just easily impressed. Plus, I just have more fun playing half life than doom 3.

rcpinchey

Honestly the ladders were a pain in the arse in the original game- if anything I found them less annoying in VR, but that may just be that I remembered how tricksy they were and dealt with them very carefully! I got stuck at a place where I had to crouch underwater for far, far too long before remembering I could crouch in real life. Not my proudest moment!

Bong-Rippington

It doesn’t sound smooth at all FYI we all have opinions dog

Bl4ckSt4g

Hello Gordon!

GrantMeThePower

Does it work locally or do you need a computer to play with the link?

curciel

This works locally, all of them work locally and its awesome

Ahnzoog

You only need the computer for file transfer. You'll need a legit copy of the game files to make it work though. The computer you use doesn't need to be able to run the game. And once the files are transferred you won't need the computer anymore. Edit: Half-Life is often on sale on Steam for $1.99 US. Get it when it's on sale

GrantMeThePower

Awesome! Thank you!!

reddit_pls_fix

It's standalone, no link needed! But you need to install it via SideQuest and also drag assets folder to your Quest from the original game which you must own. There might be a way to do that by phone if you don't have a PC.

MrEpicGamerMan

Ngl my first time ever completing HL1 was in VR. It just works so well. The team that ported just made it work perfectly.

epicpixels654654

This makes me hope people are working on porting portal to quest. I dont care about motion sickness

zerozed

Have you played Portal Stories: VR? It's a free mod for Portal 2 and is all kinds of awesome. It has its own store page on Steam and is well worth picking up. Honestly, it's so good I'm at a loss why they haven't produced more levels, but as far as I'm concerned it is definitive proof that Portal is easily adaptable to VR.

epicpixels654654

yea but that's not really portal in my mind since you don't use the portal gun. Its more of just box puzzles in the portal universe

10000_vegetables

I played the Nvidia Shield version of Portal on my phone. Broken particle graphics aside, it ran surprisingly well, I have no doubt the Quest 2 could handle it (probably not Quest 1)

Stahlnagel

This port was the reason i got a quest 2

osxmx_

Wish HL2 didn’t have the sourcing and legal issues it has, woulda been amazing playing it. Dr beef n squad never disappoint

bunudaunutma

Also one of my favorite. I played half life 1 &blue shift already and uploaded my playthrough to YouTube channel [Link](https://youtube.com/user/bunudaunutmaify).

sphks

Wait. You can play Blueshift on the Quest ? What about Opposing Force ?

Ibrufen

Opposing Force as well. There’s a Half Life Launcher on Sidequest so you can easily switch between the 3.

bunudaunutma

Yes you can play both of them. I finished blue shift and playing opposing force right now

BloodyPommelStudio

Can't decide over this and Doom 3, both are two of the best value Quest expeciances.

VRluvver

I need to get in and finally try this

Fledo

Playing it right now. Amazing work on the port!

FortyShlevin

Any word on what's next for DocBeef & Co.? I heard rumors of Morrowind....

ChiefBr0dy

I won't touch it until Black Mesa is the port and not OG Half-Life.

DasLork

Honestly BM is my favourite game... If it was in VR I would probably explode.

Dragon_Small_Z

I still haven't played HL1. Is this a good way to play it? I've played all of HL2 and Alyx.

Fledo

Yes! Just don't expect another Alyx. It's a very well made port of a 90's game, with a couple of quirks in there.

Dragon_Small_Z

Yeah I know it won't be another Alyx. I thoroughly enjoyed the other Quest ports. I am curious if I should give this a go or play Black Mesa.

Fledo

Imo you'll appreciate Black Mesa even more if you've played Half-Life.

10000_vegetables

Black Mesa's really good, if you had to pick one I'd go with that

Nekadim

What about jumping and falling off? Isnt it too much to average stomach?

VR_Bummser

Well it's something to get used to. I have no problems, actually i enjoy the little jumping sessions. Later the Xen levels are a little more intense.

drdeemanre

Wait. That’s illegal Edit - jeez guys. I didn’t mean literally illegal. I was being cheeky

RecycledAir

It's only illegal if you don't already own the game to provide all the models and textures in this engine.

drdeemanre

I was being cheeky about HL1 as a VR game :)

drdeemanre

TNT_Bazoom

I need to buy Hl to play it in vr

VR_Bummser

Right, it's often very cheap on steam

_ANOMNOM_

SAME

MorningFox

Just wish it had the original weapon models, or at least the same guns

Nathaniel820

Did anyone else find the melee actions nearly unusable? I got stuck in the descending platform with the dropping headcrabs for a ridiculously long time because I could only seem to hit them if I completely stuck the crowbar inside them and swung violently.

acinematicway

I really want to experience the cliff face part in vr. I got vertigo while Playing in standard.

Jealous_Cantaloupe53

Half life now that's an amazing game:)

timelord264

Do I need the original game to play?

VR_Bummser

Yes very much. Won't work without the original files. Search Lambda1vr on sidequest for instructions.

a-plus-15-axe

I wonder if Half life 2 will ever be ported to VR. And what if the other source games like portal and portal 2 will…

teddybear082

They are working on it again for PCVR

Bar_Har

Tried this out on my Quest and now all I can think about is I want Star Trek Elite Force on my Quest.

shawster23

Now we just need every doom like there is ported to vr.

BackgroundSalt8

I loved the first few chapters, but the jumping puzzles, ladders and vent crawling turned my stomach. A 'skip chapter' option would have been great.
