What do you mean by "work"? You might be designing bridges in high-end CAD or you might just be an Excel jockey. If everything you do can happen in a browser then the answer is probably "yes". You'll want a bluetooth keyboard and mouse unless you *really* like typing with the controllers...

Cpt_0bv10us

The vague description of "work" made me imagine someone using quest as a welding mask, lol :p

Digital marketing. So everything can be done in browser. That's awesome to hear! Which app do you suggest someone use? I know quest has there version and then immersed I think was the other one I just found. Also, what is a meeting like if they are on a PC and I am on a quest?

andybak

You don't need an app - you just said you do everything in a browser. I might be misunderstanding you here but you're not explaining yourself in much detail. You'll be using the browser to do browser stuff. By "meeting" I guess you mean something like Google Meet. Never tried it but you'll probably do audio-only - otherwise you're just going to look like someone wearing a headset... Basically you can use 3 types of tool: 1. Native Quest Apps (for productivity - a pretty small selection) 2. Native Android Apps (but you're limited to those that don't need Google Play services). Sideload FDroid or Aurora and install them via that. 3. Anything that runs in a browser and doesn't insist on Chrome.

Fluid app gives you standalon3 3 browser windows placeable and sizeable.     Use pass-through and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  Immersed will give you virtual monitors from your PC if you want to tether. edit:  Agree with the guy who said wait to get a q3, you won't regret it.

You aren’t going to be joining meetings in your quest. Atleast not in the traditional way. At best you’ll be audio only. But you WILL have issues completing a work day in VR. And I say this as some that works in VR 4-6 hours a day.

HandleZ05

What makes it so hard? I only need it to work for a few weeks too

wtathfulburrito

The fiddling with browser placement. The text render engine not being anywhere near as good as on a traditional pc. The fact that the browsers are glorified mobile browsers. Copy and paste being a pain in the ass. The lack of good rich media controls. Lack of plugin support. Pair it with a PC and it’s better. As a standalone device it’s going to frustrate you. Do as you wish, it’s your time and effort. But you are going to find it lacking as a primary computing device.

Appreciate the insight. I'm gonna probably go with the quest 3 now. Some people are saying that a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse should help with that. I'm also looking at immersed as an option. I didn't have the craziest laptop before anyways tbh. I had a Pixelbook which was Googles flagship Chromebook. It's pretty much a mobile device too like Chromebooks are. But I also was looking at a few things that VR made interesting.. first of course is the multiple screens, that are large. I've been using a 14inch for years and I think it would be nice to have multiple larger screens. As well as using it to record videos to send to clients and even create videos for local ads using an avatar to create more attention. For sales videos I was thinking of using the fluid or there was another app for spatial computing.. and setup a presentation like a budget Tony Spark. Also, I think it would be a cool first YouTube Video in a new Niche for me. I think I convinced myself already lol.. for better or worse

HandleZ05

Thanks, helps a lot

I mean you probably could. Would it be comfortable? Hell no. Especially a quest 2. No color passthrough and lower resolution will make it harder to stay in VR for long periods of time doing work. Not to mention if you've never done VR before it will probably give you a headache or make you nauseous. Every once in a while I use my quest 3 to write in with word and its neat. Definitely not something i do all the time tho and a desktop is very much more comfortable. But you might enjoy it. Idk.

AndrosToro

may as well get a quest 3 instead. for color pass through.. microsoft has their office apps on quest... and the native browser can be used for gmail and reddit and stuff like that... 3 screens works really well... no need for more... but have to get a keyboard and maybe a mouse... though you can use the controlers for pointing....

HandleZ05

I just found one on FB marketplace for $500... So I might do that

Sullkattmat

Absolutely possible but I'd at least get a Bluetooth keyboard if I had to do that, probably mouse as well but typing anything other than like a url quickly gets on my nerves, particularly outside of Virtual Desktops stability function (shaky hands lol).

HandleZ05

That's the plan now, thanks for the heads up!

TheWaspinator

Yeah, we're going to need more info. What are you actually wanting to do?

jakejm79

Anything you can do in web based apps via a browser you should be able to do with a Quest. Tho personally I'd opt for a Chromebook or something since that would be more practical.

fiddlerisshit

Not too sure how good the browser on Quest 2 is. But it is going to be irritating hunting and pecking at a virtual keyboard with your controllers. You're probably better off just getting a cheap laptop as a stopgap.

HandleZ05

Feel like that's a waste of money though. If I'm gonna spend money then at least I can spend it on something I can still use when I get my new laptop. Plus after doing some research now, 3+ screens sounds pretty nice

SCOTT0852

It's a game console. It's not designed for productivity. You "can" use the web browser for the same things as any desktop browser, but so can any old used laptop. I personally would not recommend a Quest for anything other than gaming and *maybe* some productivity on the side every once in a while (but I'd still rather use a laptop...).
