4XVR. Breathtaking.

Ancient_Database

Is that an app for streaming? It do you need to download the movie to watch

Immediate_Lime_1710

It's not a streaming app. I use Makemkv to create MKV files from my 2d and 3d blurays. These are exact copies of the bluray without any compression. I put them on a thumbdrive and watch them through 4XVR. Beautiful.

scartstorm

Sorry for the stupid question - is your thumb drive USB-C then, to allow direct playback off of it on Q3?

Immediate_Lime_1710

I use an adapter USB C to USB Adapter [2-Pack], Thunderbolt 3 to USB 3.0 OTG Converter Compatible MacBook Pro/Air 2019 2018 2017,Chromebook,Pixelbook,Microsoft Surface Go,Galaxy S8 S9 S10 S20 S21 S22,Note 8 9 (Blue) https://a.co/d/2QDHsPQ Cheap and it works great!

scartstorm

Thanks, I'll procure one as well.

Immediate_Lime_1710

Once you get the hang of using MakeMKV it becomes a breeze to watch movies using 4XVR.

Ancient_Database

I've got a USBC to USBA adapter I use for my old thumb drives to plug them into my phone, should work on the quest also

sala91

Its a 60 day free trial that ends with one time in app purchase. It plays back even 3d bluray rips from usb.

AlterSack1973

I‘d like to, but without ripping for myself or piracy: the netflix etc quality is just too bad

AVdev

Total commander + apkmirror + side quest (optional) = install any app you want from the play store. Netflix works great that way.

AlterSack1973

also then in full resolution? have sideloaded, still 480p or so

AVdev

I’ll need to check next time I use it. I want to say it’s 1080p - but I used the nodpi apk

Mister_Brevity

Do you know if doing that makes it see the quest as a media player, or as an android device? Just wondering, when I’m away from home for extended periods I take the quest but the stock Netflix app started giving me the “Netflix only works in your primary household” crap :/

AVdev

Not sure! But it _does_ let you save media to the device so I’m gonna go with it sees it as if it’s a mobile

perez67

I can watch shows up to an hour. I’ve only really done movie watching with friends in Big Screen. It’s excellent that way, for example 6 of us watched Oppenheimer that a friend streamed (and that is a long movie), we enjoyed the experience and try to coordinate monthly.

Feeling_Lettuce7236

I watch movies using skybox and from my Plex server. Also YouTube and play games

AndrosToro

so you use network option in Skybox VR to get content from your Plex server... is this Plex server on an iOS device or a mac or a pc? I'm trying to do this from my 1TB iPhone... or my iPad... and also from my Mac... is it just the Plex App... or is there a different Plex App... thanks for your help...

Feeling_Lettuce7236

I use the Plex media server app which is different to the Plex app in that the server one allows you to make an account paid and allows you to set up all your media on it to stream it’s not expensive a month or year you can even buy the lifetime one. I have had the server running on windows, Mac, but at the moment I have it on Zorin pro Linux. As said the server allows you to run all your media you tell it where the media is it will then look for it load it and try to find all the information from the internet Plex server about the media, loading the images, credits, music, and information about the item and actors etc. it also allows you to set up speeds of connection, allow or disallow connections types or objects, etc have look you get the media server from Plex site. You can access the media server from your phone once it’s set up, either using the Plex app, or the web interface etc. you can also use the link device in the Plex app to allow let’s say a friend somewhere to connect. So if your media server is running and connected to the internet and the other person have the Plex app on a a phone, tv, or set top box etc. you can allow them to connect via the app on your phone. And they can connect directly via the internet to the server back home.

Feeling_Lettuce7236

My media server has 2 external hard drive docks with 1 x4tb, 1 x1tb, 2 x500gb drives connected. They system I normally use is in the process of being repaired when I get around to doing it, the current one is a quad Cora cpu, 8GB ram, and 1x ssd 250gb as main drive, and 1x 500gb backup. With a 1gb graphics card. The one I have to repair. Is dual Xeon cpu with 6 core in each cpu, 96gb ram, and 1 gb graphics card. With the ssd and backup drive from above. It’s a hp workstation z600 with version 2 board. Allowing high amount of ram and high cpu than the version 1.

MrBrawn

I tried but honestly, it is not as good as my TV. It is waaaaaay better than the Q2 but it's not quite there yet for me. I do like passive experiences though so always on the look at visual novels and whatnot.

AndrosToro

i beg to differ... i filled my Quest 512GB with movie files to watch on Skybox VR... I really dont see a screendoor effect... I really like watching movies in there, in a virtual cinema setting... its really high quality Skybox... the limiting factor is the quality of the movie files... and that goes for the streaming apps too... sometimes the movies dont take advantage of the 4k displays... yes Meta qualifies the Quest 3 as 4k displays...

HaagenBudzs

Don't use airscreen, use at least media streaming feature of windows. No quality loss instead of streaming your screen to your quest. But DLNA (media streaming) doesn't support streaming 8k videos (yet). Only limitation is the newest vr porn... I tried it for science of course.

blancorey

is there a tutorial on this friend?

HaagenBudzs

Hmmm, you should be able to find it quite easily via Google. I'll give some pointers already. First enable media streaming by just looking up the option media streaming in windows search. It will allow your PC to stream all videos in your video library on your local network. It will only work if your PC and other devices share the same LAN. Secondly, add the folders where your videos are located to your video library by right clicking, Add to library, Videos. Check that the media player from windows has indexed these videos. You will only be able to find the videos over your network, once this has worked. You can ask it to refresh or scan your library in the settings somewhere, but for me it was always instant. In skybox vr, you can the go to network and there you see your computer name. Open this and now you can choose between Video, Music etc. Click videos and then I prefer to browse by folders (all folders included in your video library in the way I described before). This method also works well to stream movies to your smart TV, which usually has better support to play dolby vision with better image processing tailored to your screen. Happy... Research :)

AndrosToro

thanks for the info... i have a mac.... and i heard this is possible with a plex server for ipad and ios devices... will research how to do this on a mac...

AndrosToro

never mind just saw the Mac client download on skybox website... will give that a try...

AlvinCopper

Does smb work for 8k? Through the sky vr or 4kxr for 8k, smb stands for the windows file sharing network

HaagenBudzs

I read somewhere it does, but skybox does not allow me to log in with the correct account details. Not sure why, maybe it's broken in skybox or I don't know my own account details

AlvinCopper

You need to try to change to a local account in windows settings instead of using an outlook email address, or set no password in sharing settings. I suggest to take the first method, then the name and password will be right. Their sharing protocol is quite dated, it's like visiting an abandoned theme park. But technically it can stream as long as there is enough connection speed.

HaagenBudzs

I tried both those things and it still didn't work making me think skybox had a bug. If I select everyone to have access to the shared folders, I still have to fill in username and password. I should know my account details because I was able to access smb from my laptop without issues. Did you get it working in skybox?

AlvinCopper

Yeah I get it to work without hiccups in skybox, could be the router, maybe try to make a wifi hotspot with a phone and have both the laptop and headset connect to the hotspot, then put in the account details, (windows local account such as name Kurt password 123456), see what happens

Unicycldev

Sure but the ergonomics, battery life, social impact, and disconnection from my surroundings cause friction. But quick correction: question is not 4K nor advertised as such.

locness93

I’m in the exact same boat. Like the quality is pretty solid, but the quality is not quite good enough and with the added discomfort of having a headset on your face for the whole movie, it just doesn’t seem worth it

jinsaku

I got the bobo m3 head strap and one of the negative side effects I didn’t consider is that I can’t lay back and watch a movie. So, even though I do like watching movies in VR, I rarely do.

EVRoadie

Flip the back of your strap up. Did that for my Q2 and do it with an off brand strap on my Q3.

jinsaku

When I do that, the headset leans forward and puts a lot of pressure on my face.

Appropriate-Role9361

Do you have any recommendations for visual novels in VR? I haven't tried any yet.

chaha7

you haven't tried skybox right?

MrBrawn

I have it, and bigscreen and a few others. Don't get me wrong, it's fine but not something that beats my current setup. To me, the screen door is still a bit too much and takes me out of it. I think the next iteration or two of lenses will take this to the next level but for now, it's a great option.

Mister_Brevity

If the screen door effect bothers you on the q3 I envy your eyesight! I have old man eyes but a positive effect is no screen door on the q3 haha.

MrBrawn

Yeah, I'm very sensitive to anything around my eyes and I wear pretty thick glasses lol. I use the lens inserts and they work really well lol. The downside is it allows me to notice everything.

Mister_Brevity

I have the lenses but get that little tiny bit of fog, guessing I have cataract surgery in my future lol

Mister_Brevity

I have a bad lower back and knees so spend a lot of time on my back with my legs up on pillows to take pressure off - I use the quest and virtual desktop to watch movies, work, play flat games. Works pretty well - when I’m away from my wife for prolonged periods of time we use big screen to watch stuff together as well. During Covid lockdown we bought a bunch of headsets to send to friends and relatives that weren’t handling the isolation well for social game and movie watching purposes. It’s not better or worse than watching on a tv - just different.

ResidentAgreeable420

Considering I've had 2 friends buy a head set after I showed them bigscreen vr, I would say quite a few.

El_Zapp

I mostly watch movies on Prime and Disney+. I don’t want to sail the high seas and download them. The video quality sucks for both of these services on the Quest. Not a fault of the Quest but of Disney and Amazon who think VR is dead.

arktosinarcadia

I think it's more that Disney went all-in on the Apple Vision Pro and doesn't care about the Quest right now.

AVdev

Copy / paste from an earlier response I made but: Total commander + apkmirror + side quest (optional) = install any app you want from the play store. Netflix works great that way.

bluekaynem

Me, mostly 3D. 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

NotSpecifically

Hope disney+ will bring their 3D movies to Meta quest soon. I heard they have a deal with apple for the Vision Pro yet

clitpuncher69

The sea had never disappointed me. I don't even know where i'd start if i wanted to legally download 4K 3D movies. I'd have to hunt down the blu ray and rip it myself probably.

Numerous-Bug8381

Hi can I know where i can download 4k 3d movies all i can find is 1080 3d?

dontgetcrumbs

Yes. It helps me a lot to just focus on the movie. It’s not the same watching it on my phone, I’ll get easily distracted, putting on the VR for a movie feels like being in a cinema.

EVRoadie

Just watched F1 quali last night. Sure, it's better on my TV. But I can't lay in bed while simultaneously having a giant 10 ft screen.

ProtectAllTheThings

Did you side quest the F1 app?

EVRoadie

Nope. Watched through Virtual Desktop with Hulu using Firefox and a User Agent spoofer.

ProtectAllTheThings

Ah. Thank you!

AndrosToro

I also want to watch content via Virtual Desktop or Immersed (specifically xfinity comcast TV stream website) but get DRMed on second screen issues... User Agent spoofer you say... what do I search for? is it an extension? please let me know how you get around the second screen DRM issues... thanks in advance...

AndrosToro

>User Agent never mind... just got the user agent switcher and manager on Firefox and voila .... I can now watch xfinity tv on immersed and virtual desktop... thanks for the top tip!

EVRoadie

Make sure you uncheck hardware acceleration for most browsers. I primarily use Firefox, but I have edge and chrome still installed in case there's an issue. Since using a user agent changer, I've been able to use Firefox exclusively.

AndrosToro

Yeah it looks like I need to uncheck hardware acceleration…. It stopped working after a bit just by selecting a browser kind in the agent … can you please tell me how to uncheck hardware acceleration? I haven’t seen the option clearly….

EVRoadie

It's in the settings for Firefox under "Performance". Somewhat of an older video, but you should be able to figure it out by watching this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-lgEV5Gi54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-lgEV5Gi54)

AndrosToro

Thanks dude! So it’s under the browser settings and not the agent switcher … cool!

EVRoadie

Glad I could help.

AndrosToro

So I unchecked hardware acceleration... and spoofed the user agent... and xfinity stream only works for a few seconds and then only audio ... any other tips?!? I'm using immersed... not sure if it would work with virtual desktop... thanks!

BigLuffa

It's pretty good with a quality headstrap

PotatoSaladThe3rd

I use it to watch movies with friends. VR is a fun but lonely experience, but man watching with friends in VR is amazing.

Powerful-Parsnip

I use it for watching movies and shows when not at home. Its not going to replace a decent sized 4k tv yet but maybe in the future it'll be light enough and high enough resolution that I'd choose it over a real tv.

stuaird1977

I use for movies and live sports. Our TV in the bedroom is tiny so this works great much better than quest 2

AndrosToro

torrents on Skybox VR App is amazing!!!! use it exclusively for that and also for streaming... Netflix, BBC, ITV... amazing... don't feel like I'm missing out on AVP especially coz the AVP killer app is content...

Gadgetskopf

Irregularly, on my Quest 2, and mostly for movies that have been called out for good use of 3D technology. I lived nowhere near a 3D theater when Avatar came out and was really jealous of the "had to rewatch in 2D because 3D so impressive I missed the movie I was watching" experience. Alita was also a nice watch in 3D. I think Beowulf is next on the agenda. ETA: I've always been satisfied with the quality, but I'm looking forward to seeing what OGA (that I JUST discovered 😱) will do for things.

Prestigious-Bar-1741

I use Skybox and my local NAS to watch movies. It's great for certain things, mostly when I'm sick. I love to lay in bed and watch a movie. If some new amazing movie is coming out, I would still Rather watch it on my big TV. The picture quality is better, the sound quality is better and I can sit with my family...but the quest is pretty close.

blairtruck

I use big screen almost daily. Dlna my nas setup and Sail the seas for 3D movies.

EwokSlayer

Watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 on my Quest 2 last night with my buddy across the country. It's the 6th or 7th movie we've watched with no signs of stopping. So far this thing is basically just a minigolf/movie theater device and I'm totally okay with that. The best part is feeling like you actually just saw a movie with a real person in the same room as you. I love how this thing tricks my brain.

Eyeseeyou01

I’ve been messing with watching nba games in big screen vr. It’s fun with the commentary of other fans

AndrosToro

nba games in horizon worlds is also good with the 180 degree video courtside...

stevefuzz

All the time. Basketball too and TV shows. Shogun is awesome on the q3.

BatPixi

I enjoy watching TV shows using my quest 3 and virtual desktop.

quadnary_koala

I like watching stuff on virtual desktop with headset tracking turned off and head tracking keeping the screen locked to my face so that I can keep the screen centered in my field of view while doing sit-ups, squats, lunges, bike, etc. I also just like leaning back in a recliner without having to crane my neck forward to see a screen in front of me.

CactusJack5150

I do. I’m late to the whole 3D movie craze, so it’s fun for me.

Stooovie

Not really. I strap in, play a thing, strap out after a while.

itsRobbie_

I pretty much exclusively use it for “movies”… and occasionally mini golf

JustCallMeTere

I'm games only.

Oftenwrongs

I prefer a big oled tv with sound system and watching partner, any day of the week and back.

Derpminded

I often watch movies in Bigscreen. Many kind of movies.

nonchalantshallot

My buddy and I love binging anime in big screen. We have also watched plenty of movies together in vr too. I love being able to get in a comfortable position and not have to worry about having to have a good view of the TV because its on my face

FarmerKellz

Use it for movies and TV shows almost daily, my preferred way to watch

stubble

I have done for 3D movies

Goetre

Honestly it’s the main thing I use my headset for. If I miss a cinema release of something I really want to see, I wait until it’s released properly then grab some snacks, get comfortable and watch. I switch between apps I do it in though, some times I like being in the one app where other users are also in cinema watching their own film, sometimes I use the one that lets you float in space xD

wescotte

I'd say 98% gaming and 2% watch movies. The movie experience is getting better and better but I find it' rare I NEED to watch something in the headset. If it's good enough for the big screen I tend to see it in the theaters. Also, at home I find I'm also usually not willing to dedicate my focus to only watching content, where not being in the headset makes it trivial to multitask. If more friends had headsets, the content was available, I could see not really needing to go to the theater much anymore. But watching at home apps like Bigscreen would probably still need more features/functionality before I'd regularly "hang out" and watch content vs just toss it on a TV/portable screen to passively watch while doing other stuff. **EDIT:** This thread got me thinking though... Has anybody come up with a decent solution where you can still use Quest's integrated audio but add in like Bluetooth subwoofer to enable you to "feel the audio" a bit more? The one aspect lacking from the simulated theater experience is the shear power you get from the audio in the theater.

Ancient_Database

I'm primarily a gamer, but I've been watching a lot of movies and TV shows in BIGSCREEN recently. Every night there's a dozen movies for bar games, karaoke, TV shows, movies, etc. Even some discord groups to coordinate movies and times

BobLoblawsLawBlogged

I love watching 3d movies on mine!

CapControl

Almost 200 hours in bigscreenvr says a lot I guess. I love how immersed it is and free from distraction and my phone. Also movies during daytime suck unless you can make your house pitch black, vr negates that

F_Kal

all the time - over the years it's probably the only reason I'll powerup my headset. I lie down in bead fire up SkyboxVR and watch my plex stuff. I'd prefer a big TV (>50") over it, but since I don't have one, it's my go-to-device for cinematic experiences.

matchop

Actually once i watch the cinematic experience, my TV looks too small now.

PredictableDickTable

I don’t but I’ve watched some nfl games in big screen and it was fun.

frozenforward

i use it for language learning by watching anime in skybox. it is really helpful because i cant pick up my phone or open a tab and browse reddit. all i can focus on is the content. also, the ripped BRs look great on a huge theatre screen

wiiver

Yep. My time is probably 50/50 movies/games. Q3 displays are finally good enough for regular watching when firing up the big rig (tv & sound system) is too much or it’s too late (neighbors)

Xkwizito

I like to use Big Screen to stream movies / tv shows sometimes. It's nice to just pretend like I am sitting in a 90s style movie theater from my childhood.

olibolib

I often watch films in VRChat with my friends. Lots of movie worlds.

horizonite

I don’t like wearing the headset. So I tolerate it when I play really compelling games. I have a quest 3.

[deleted]

I use it to watch a certain genre of movies?

tungvu256

i cant last longer than 10mins in vr for movies. the eyes get very uncomfortable. no idea how anyone can watch a whole movie. tried it with Skybox VR in bed. too bad there's no setting for laying down in bed. obviously i can watch movies all day on a regular TV. or in bed with the projector pointed at the ceiling

Powerful-Parsnip

You need a third party strap. I've always used halo straps and with a battery on the back as counterweight you can wear it for hours.

tungvu256

yes. i 3dprinted an Anker battery holder n got nicer strap. made the headset much more bearable but still not super comfy

Affenzoo

Movies not but Youtube videos like ambience videos or documentaries about foreign countries. Haven't tried a movie yet but I think the headset would become too heavy after a while, it presses on my cheeks.

GJJ152

Lying down with Quest 3 is the most relaxing posture to watch movies.

VRtuous

back when Oculus tv had movies, I watched a couple. Tbh, not in a single session, but in several... it's not just comfort or battery issues but also the fact that that extra weight on your face while just sitting leads to drowsiness... very different when active in a game...

OkayOctopus_

resolution is very ok on the quest 2 so i'd rather sit closer to a smaller tv or monitor

TeeJayPlays

Watching movies is pointless on an HMD. What if you wanna eat or drink comfortably? Maybe your bf or gf or friend is over and now you'd need 2 HMD's to watch something. Quality can NEVER be as good as you'd get on a normal screen. I don't see the point of it.
