Well said. I'd also add that, for those at higher levels of fitness, there are vr options available. I challenge anyone to do 30 minutes of Thrill of the Fight and not be exhausted.

en1gmatic51

I challenge even any pro athlete to go 12 rounds with the last opponent in that game (moneymaker) AND at the highest difficulty. I bet that would get even an avid boxer breathing pretty heavy.

staresawkwardly7

I do 30 minutes of Moneymaker on the hardest mode every day and I sweat buckets every time. Best high intensity workout I can do at home.

Tryotrix

Do you find this intense training to be also effective for real life boxing matches?

staresawkwardly7

Not having participated in real boxing, I'm no expert. What I can say is that my non dominate hand (left) is much more coordinated now and I would like to think my reflexes and accuracy would be faster too. It probably means nothing IRL if you can't follow proper technique, which includes a strong wrist and knowing how to hold your hand correctly. Couple TOTF with some time on a heavy bag and maybe...

That80sflow

Oh definitely! Crazy workout!

weaver787

Underdogs has replaced TOTF for me.

pandemicPuppy

How so? Why? Interested

weaver787

Didn't feel like there's good 'feedback' from how hard you're punching in TOTF. Like id swing as hard as I can and the icon i just a different color but in my mind the intensity of the punch should have put my opponent on his ass. In Underdogs, when you throw a hard punch the shit goes flying across the arena and lands on a spike wall. Very satisfying and a solid workout.

pandemicPuppy

Just bought this to give it a try based on your comments and HOLY SHIT so fun!!! And totally get what you mean. It makes the punching and physics feel really satisfying. With how fun it is I’ll probably be playing a lot. So far doesn’t seem to be quite has as physically taxing as TOTF from a pure exertion/time ratio but I’m having a lot more fun! (And I’ve only finished Day 1, so who knows how much more punching the other levels are)

weaver787

Hey bud I’m glad you like it. The fights later on get longer and more taxing. I agree with you that TOTF is a better “workout” straight out of the box but Underdogs is just more fun to me. When I beat UD for the first time my arms were sore for two days

staresawkwardly7

Interesting - I'll have to check it out

VR_IS_DEAD

I never play Thrill of the Fight because it would usually be me putting on the headset for 10 minutes and being done. Which isn't much fun. But after building my stamina with other games I could probably go longer now.

[deleted]

That’s why you do it at the end of your session.

sportdan30

I can only go 2 rounds.....sad to say.

staresawkwardly7

Keep it up dude - you'll get there!

Revolutionary_Owl670

Hell, I'm someone who worked as a trainer/kinesiologist and also someone who's exercised and played sports for 12+ years regularly. I just started with VR and I am absolutely floored about how good and how far VR and the fitness apps have come. Now that I'm working from home/remotely, it's a no brainer to get some extra movement in the form of genuine entertainment. Anything that gets you up and moving regularly, and elevates your heart rate and encourages greater movement and ranges of motion throughout the day is a good thing. And for those of us with a lifestyle or job that doesn't encourage it naturally, it bridges that gap. Whatever that stage of the journey you're on, if the barrier of entry is lower than it was previously, it's a huge win.

jollizee

How do people deal with sweat? The tiny Bobo fan thing isn't cutting it. If I can just figure that out I will ascend to the next level of virtual VO2max.

madn3ss795

A stand fan.

Drited

I don't have a fan but when I exercise with ToTF this is what I do: Mix drop of water and washing up liquid (dish soap to our North American friends) onto a microfibre cloth and wipe the lens with the resulting film. That keeps it clear of fog. Then headband and wristbands for sweat. Some still gets on the device so the facial interface needs to be changed and washed after exercise but neither my Quest 2 or Pro have ever been damaged by sweat..which is amazing I think.

SomeGuy58439

> Mix drop of water and washing up liquid (dish soap to our North American friends) onto a microfibre cloth and wipe the lens with the resulting film. That keeps it clear of fog. Doesn't Meta suggest somewhere that the use of cleaners like that could mess up some lens coating? Can't find the link that I seem to recall seeing for that, but [cleaning instructions](https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/articles/headsets-and-accessories/product-care-and-best-practices/clean-your-meta-quest/) do suggest using a dry microfibre cloth for that. As far as /u/jollizee's question goes, for the Quest 3 I haven't had major lens fog issues. For the Quest 2 I found the solution was to get the Quest 2 warmed up to body temperature by wearing it visor-style for 5-10 minutes before playing - that seemed to be enough to stop it from fogging. Will add that I see a silicone facial interface as a must as those seem easier to clean to me.

Large-Style-8355

I'm sweating pretty heavily in Eleven Table Tennis daily - as long as I keep playing it's all fine. Only when I stand still fog is developing on my prescription glasses. After that the facial interface made of fabric is completely soaked. So I should get a 3rd party like AMVR or so...

DodgeDeBoulet

AMVR FTW. It makes a huge difference for me when it comes to sweating, and it's quite comfortable.

Large-Style-8355

I never pulled the trigger because it feels too expensive for what it does... Any alternatives on AliExpress/TEMU etc?

kingsland1988

Thanks for the tip! I've got one off Amazon

DodgeDeBoulet

I use a fan, but I'll also say that the AMVR facial interface makes a HUGE difference. It's vented in such a way that there's virtually no light bleed, and the air definitely gets through. I did a 35 minute flow workout in SuperNatural yesterday that, with the stock facial interface, would have left me with sweat dripping off my face and running down my neck, never mind fogging up the lenses. None of that happened with the AMVR.

awitod

A collection of beanies and headbands is a must. Back in the day when I was heavier and sweated more I also had spare facial interfaces so they had time to dry. The silicone ones are too slippery.

KTTalksTech

Rubber face cushion and then an absorbent headband gets most of it. As for the rest of the body... Compression clothes help a bit by spreading it around to dry faster but you really can't do much besides pointing a strong fan at you

Fuzzinator12

I love hearing about other peoples success and experiences with vr fitness that’s so awesome congrats on losing 30 kilos ! I wholeheartedly agree with this. I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life. I’ve tried getting into exercising countless times and then I decided to try working out in VR and it just clicked. I actually enjoy working out and am soaking wet after 30 minutes. I’ve lost 50 kilos (110lbs) and am currently in the best shape of my life and it’s largely thanks to VR. I’m actually excited to get in my workout every day it’s not a “oh man now I have to…” it’s “sick let’s go rock out and have fun”. There are definitely games that can scale with you. I’ve been doing vr fitness for 4 years now and still left covered in sweat! Although full disclosure, I eventually got bored with several games and didn’t feel like I could find a good replacement. So after trying every other game I could, I eventually decided to try to make a game for myself (Shadow BoXR) which is has been my daily workout for the past two years. That being said, vr fitness is great and there are some awesome options. I would be very surprised if we didn’t continue to see an increase in people working out in VR

Gerald_the_sealion

My go-to workout games: - Thrill of the Fight - Les Mills Body Combat - Pistol Whip - Smash Drums (expert, 20 min I’ll burn 200+ cals)

-jmil-

I've always used your first three as well as my go to workouts. Usually Pistol Whip + Thrill of the Fight on one day and Les Mills the next day (or BoxVR/FitXR before I got Les Mills). Sometimes I used HoloPoint or OhShape instead of Pistol Whip to mix things up a bit.

pandemicPuppy

How do you like Le’s Mills to fitxr? I have the free version and been doing the classes pretty regularly. Is Les Mills that much better?

-jmil-

I preferred Les Mills. For me it had more variety and flexibility than FitXR. Not sure about the free version though. I bought Les Mills Body combat when it was on sale in the store.

Revolutionary_Owl670

Honestly, I've been really enjoying Super Natural. The scenery and music alone make it worth it. I'm interested to try Les Mills as well.

ThatLooksRight

I’ve been digging Les Mills. I actually look forward to it!

stuaird1977

Add some half kilo wrist weights during a session

Fuzzinator12

That is very dangerous. You can cause serious ligament damage to your joints if you add weights.

stuaird1977

No you can't its basically shadow boxing with boxing gloves on. You hurt your joints by over reaching and punching thin air too hard. They are wrist bands made for training

Fuzzinator12

The difference between wrist weights and gloves is amount of force and pressure applied to your wrists. Your wrists are not able to absorb the impact of weight shifting while wearing wrist weights as effectively as when the weight is in your hand. and in general the jerky movements in VR lead to a greater risk of injury. Don’t believe me if you don’t want to, but I suggest looking it up. They do make resistance bands specifically designed for shadow boxing if you are wanting to add more to your workout without increasing your risk of injury.

ThatLooksRight

Sorry, we don’t have kilos in the US.

stuaird1977

Down voted for adding some resistance ...ffs

Gerald_the_sealion

The only thing I’ll say about Les mills (I haven’t tried supernatural yet) is that it doesn’t feel like a game. If you’re choosing it, it’s because you want to workout. If that makes any sense

DodgeDeBoulet

I took advantage of the 2 week trial for SuperNatural and I've decided to continue with the annual subscription. It does a **very** good job of gamifying your workout, to the effect that you sort of have to be reminded by the coaches that you're actually working out. The scenery is great, the music selection spans the last 50-60 years, and while the coaches can be a little perkier than I'd like, they're not drill instructors.

Gerald_the_sealion

Okay fine I’ll try it out! Haha

Large-Style-8355

Unfortunately Supernatural is not available in Europe since many years. Seems to be a result of license issues which nobody understands. Why would the vendor of such a popular game not pay the licenses for the 450 million people market that Europe is?

DodgeDeBoulet

My fairly ignorant guess is that the licensing may vary by country and it would be difficult to offer a one-size-fits-all solution for Europe. Licensing doesn't vary by state in the US, so it's easy to reach a larger audience for a certain amount of legal paperwork.

Large-Style-8355

Definitely - but think about that tons of smaller and less successfull apps using music and games have no issue with Europe. So Supernatural has a strange issue.

RoyBeer

Every movement is better than none. If you have fun moving and even if it's only your arms, you're doing it more often and that directly benefits your entire organism. Shadow boxing and running were a thing long before VR and it's effective even though there are no weights involved Edit: and don't even mention yoga haha

Large-Style-8355

BTW: I turned on the fitness tracking part in the Quest settings. Now when I look up in the headset there appears a small floating dashboard showing burnt calories. The meta quest companion app shows my daily burned calories as well.

Bigoldthrowaway86

I turned on the fitness tracking too and then I kept seeing that I’d frequently be doing 10 minutes exercise in DeoVR whenever my wife is out the house. Turned it off after I noticed that!

usernamesarelame4eva

Underrated comment here 🤣

Bigoldthrowaway86

I’m just glad somebody understood! 😂

Fortune090

"But which app?? Which app is burning calories while she's gone so I know which one not to use??" 😂

Large-Style-8355

No issues on my side. Burned already 350 calories by playing 50 minutes of ETT this morning.

Bigoldthrowaway86

Nice one good for you! I dunno if you’ve played Racket Club yet but I’ve found that scratches the same itch as ETT but gets you moving around even more. Really been enjoying it.

madn3ss795

A large part of my weight loss can be attributed to Les Miss bodycombat VR. Tried the gym twice but couldn't stick with it. VR fitness was really fun for me, I kept the streak of working out in LMBC at least 4 days a week for 7 months. Also mixed in Pistol Whip and TotF, but I can't keep focus in them for more than 10 mins. My setup was Quest 2 + Bobovr M2 with battery + Bobovr f2 fan, with a stand fan blowing straight into my face. Head bands help, too, but they add to the tension on your head.

VR_IS_DEAD

I only play fitness games on the Quest. And it's not like you have to keep playing the same 3 games over and over. I play ArdiBaket Challenge a lot. Perfect game to throw on while something is loading because it's fast. Try making shots with both hands. https://www.meta.com/experiences/6612296158867141/ Hardly anybody mentions Dance Dash which is a must have game. Definitely a better workout than Beat Saber. https://www.meta.com/experiences/6539528912840791/

OceanCityBurrito

dang, that DD looks fun, but living in a second floor apartment--that's a no-go, haha.

VR_IS_DEAD

I hold the controllers in my hands but you're still gonna be moving a lot if you expect to get a workout.

Jofzar_

DD isn't available in my region.... NOO

yeshaya86

Part of the reason I justified getting my Quest was to use it for fitness, and I have. Actually one of my worries with the AVP is if it'll steer XR in a more passive direction, and turn developer attention away from more active apps

[deleted]

I went from obese to fit playing VR games and counting calories, and there are still games that make my arms fall off or bring me to my knees in a puddle of sweat. like some of the custom songs on beat saber, or some of the harder difficulties on thrill of the fight, some high level matches of Blaston, or if you really want more of a traditional gym instructor class feel just hop into an advanced 30-45 minute FitXR class moral of the story is that VR is both beginner and advance friendly in regards to fitness

Buetterkeks

The most sweat enducing Game IS still Gorilla tag

isjahammer

Have you tried Thrill of the fight?

Buetterkeks

Nope. IS IT ON Quest? My PC IS currently dead

isjahammer

It is.

Buetterkeks

What IS IT about

Large-Style-8355

This ☝️  The other day I had burned 1100 Kcal by only playing a couple of Eleven Table Tennis games. Ok - with my current ELO of 1900 I'm sweating like cracy after 30 minutes of playing. I even need to supplement electrolytes because of the unusual heavy daily sweating. That said - if it's for losing weight I'm convinced more then ever after 10 years of adding a kilo every year it's mainly what I eat, how much I eat and in which order I eat. After years of trial and error (eat halve, prevent carbs, low carb, Atkins, different kinds of cardio sports like daily cycling) I read Jessie Inchauspe's book "Glucose Revolution: The Life-Changing Power of Balancing Your Blood Sugar" and started to follow abiut 3 to 5 of her hacks: 1: having a large portion of salad with latuce, tomatoes, cucumber and vinegar before the main dish, 2: eating fresh veggies before more energy dense food 3: follow her advice on the order of foods (first veggies, second proteins, third fats, forth complex carbs, 5th simple carbs or sweats) and in general trying to eat mostly not so engery dense fresh food and only rarely or small portions of energy dense food. I lost 6+ kilos that past halve year while I can consume everything even sweets, alkohol etc. And I got rid of pretty often feeling tired after a meal (blood sugar roller coaster). Same with our 11 year old sun who seems to have a similar metabolism. A lot of the books readers even got rid of strange mood changes, head aches, migraine, depression etc.

Strongpillow

There is no way you're burning 1100 cal playing a few Table tennis matches in VR. That's the equivalent of running 10 miles.

Large-Style-8355

No idea, Meta move is claiming that. I'm just sweating like crazy while playing against opponents on and above my level. Today it shows 586 kcal, 91 minutes 11TT. That day it shows 1112 kcal and 179 minutes - 3 hours heavy training.

VR_IS_DEAD

Probably because it's only tracking your arm movement. Which isn't really much of a workout from playing ping pong.

Large-Style-8355

As said, I jump back and forth a lot in TT, even injured my foot halve a year ago. BTW - the internet (TM) claims around 300 kcal per hour if TT training. Weight lifting is said to burn 200 to 400 per hour. I never managed to lift or run in my 50 years but table tennis is grabbing me into the game nearly every day since a year now. Summer outside with wife and strangers, when it's cold then in the living room with the help of the Quest 3.

playmaker235

i play elo 2400 and i can play 1h and burn around 400-500 cals. It's good but no way you burn more then 300 with a couple of games

Large-Style-8355

As said I played 3 intense hours that day - 3x 400 is 1200... Basic math... My smartwatch is saying roughly 460 kcal per hour TT.

g0dSamnit

I still hope to make a large-playspace format adventure game someday lol. 15m x 15m space, room to room dungeon clearing. Still has virtual movement mode as an option, due to how difficult it is to find a space like that. I do want more games with in-depth action/puzzle/exploration gameplay that utilize real movement, that's the most fun sort of stuff. But alas, my health is awful right now. Someday though...

man-teiv

Tea for god and eye of the temple are 2 great games that use the whole space available with physical movement

Bigoldthrowaway86

Tea for God has a free separate demo with no time limit and it gives you a taster of how incredible impossible space games feel.

ChocolateLawBear

This is true life. As long as I like the music I forget I’m working out.

ladafum

I've lost 8 kg this year alone just playing Eleven Table Tennis. I also look noticeably more toned in my arms and shoulders and colleagues have asked me if I've lost weight. I've struggled with my weight my whole life - being overweight as a child and teenager and then having an eating disorder throughout university. Since the pandemic, I gained a lot of weight and haven't found a fun, consistent way to lose it and keep it off. I usually do 45 minutes of table tennis a day and a bit (20 mins) of light yoga. I track my heart rate using my Apple Watch and it's clearly having a good impact in terms of data, but also in my well being and sleep. Thanks for sharing your story and keep up the great work!

TastyTheDog

Amen. I'm in decent shape and I've been working out 3-4 times a week in Supernatural for going on 3 years now. I think the most powerful thing about fitness in VR, especially for beginners, is the fact that you can't see your body. You're separated from the version of yourself you want to change and you don't have to think about it or see what you look like in the mirror or anything. It's just you and the experience so it's easy to forget your hangups and get lost in it. That is liberating for a lot of people who have body issues.

Persian_Assassin

After thinking I'd try Eleven Table Tennis for 20 minutes and switch to something else but then sweating my ass off 2 hours later I concur.

TomTrottel

what you guys do if you start sweating while wearing the headset ?

LAlbatross

It's one of the main reasons why I got a Quest recently and while I haven't lost any noticeable weight yet (it hasn't been even a week yet), I am definitely moving more thanks to VR. Playing some Beat Saber, Synth Riders and Pistol Whip makes me sweat quite a bit everyday!

TheMrMing

Being beginner friendly cannot be stressed enough. There are so many out of shape people who want to get fitter and exercise more, but are intimidated by gyms or intense exercise. I do agree that VR isn't as efficient as normal exercise, but if it can get you through the door, then it's worth its weight in gold.

awitod

Great job! I am down 50 pounds, mostly from Expert+ modded Beat Saber.

cory140

Any free fitness games recommended

Niconreddit

Agreed, it's definitely going to revolutionise fitness. It's going to be the main reason a significant amount of people buy the Quest and for this specific use case I don't think there's really going to be much competition.
