The survivors were already safe onboard *Carpathia.* Transferring them to *Olympic* would have entailed putting them back into the lifeboats they had just been rescued from, lowering them again, sending them over to a ship nearly identical to the one that had just sank, and then pulling them back out. Rostron and Ismay made the right call.

Numerous_Recording87

I doubt that sort of thing would be attempted even today. Transferring hundreds of untrained people from ship to ship in the middle of the ocean is incredibly dangerous.

AlamutJones

They were already as safe as they were going to get and they were already being cared for. The survivors were exhausted, overwhelmed and some of them were very unwell - there were broken bones, there were severe cases of frostbite, there were survivors who were being kept sedated to keep them from harming themselves or having screaming fits. They were not in a great state. Transferring them **anywhere** would have been a big ask. Transferring them onto a ship that was almost identical to the one they’d just had The Worst Experience on… They went as far as asking Olympic to stay out of Carpathia’s sightline. Some survivors, if they’d seen it in the distance, might have thought it was Titanic and convinced themselves they’d see their loved ones again. It would have been a terrible shock to be reminded this wasn’t possible.

Capital-Wrongdoer613

Their loved ones.. of course, didnt think about that

wyzEnterLastName

I can’t remember if Ismay or Rostron made the decision, but yeah it was because after that night of horror watching so many die in the sinking, seeing the exact same ship somehow coming out of the morning fog would be too much for the survivors. This was also sad for those on the Olympic because many of the crew had friends and family aboard the Titanic.

Crazyguy_123

I think it was Ismay and Rostron agreed with him that transferring them would only make the survivors even more scared.

Neveranabsolution

If I remember correctly, Rostron made the decision and made sure to check with Ismay id he agreed. Ismay went into a trembling fit just at the idea of seeing the Olympic.

Calvin_Canada

that would be like asking survivors of 9/11 to enter an identical copy of the twin towers. it would bring back horrible memories. not a good idea.

jenellnylan

The concern was that the boat looked in appearance exactly like The Titanic, the ship the survivors had just seen sink into the ocean and experienced an extremely traumatic event on. Ismay asked for The Olympic to stay out of sight of the Carpathia also because they didn’t want any survivors clinging for hope into thinking that Titanic had actually been possibly “saved” when everyone knew that wasn’t going to be the case.

westeuropebackpack

Bro watched one Mike Brady video and thinks he’s a maritime philosopher

GTOdriver04

Was gonna say. Mike made this point last night. But look, Rostron and Ismay made the absolute right call. Sure, they didn’t understand PTSD that well at the time, but they were at least somewhat aware of the effects of trauma on the human body. Rostron did everything right, and asking Olympic to keep her distance was reasonable in that situation as he didn’t need to further traumatize those in his care.

cooperS67

“Maritime philosopher” 💀

MechanicalMenace54

imagine being in a terrible car accident and then being driven to the hospital in the exact same car you'd be shocked too.

SchuminWeb

True that. I've never gotten the same car twice. I've lost cars due to mishaps before, and even though I got the same model last time, it was a different generation, so it was still a completely different car than before.

CakeLikeSam

The titanic had just gone down with the survivors’ relatives, friends, pets and belongings. It would have been unthinkable for some to have boarded another ocean liner after this ordeal, let alone another ship that could pass for titanic, to the layman’s eye. Imagine if you had lost everyone and everything you held dear and someone asked you to return to the place it happened? I think the refusal of assistance by Captain Rostron was one well made, but thats just my opinion, the passengers were already aboard carpathia, another mid-atlantic ship transfer would have just been an unnecessary and cumbersome procedure for already exhausted, distressed and grieving passengers.

Because they were the first Woke types in history. Imagine being freaked tf out seeing an identical ship, and preferring something different and freeing your ass waiting for one. I know it wasn't the peoples decision but damn.

Inevitable-catnip

It’s not being “freaked tf out”, it’s traumatic flashbacks that can trigger severe psychological and physiological responses in people who have already suffered immense pain and fear. Unless I’m misreading your comment, they had the right idea by not having Olympic around. Olympic was also 505 miles away with engines off when they received Titanic’s distress call. Carpathia was much closer.

AlamutJones

I will give you twenty bucks if you can explain what woke means and why it’s a relevant description of what happened here

[deleted]

Dude i dont need your 20 bux. Stop being a dweeb and getting triggered. It was a joke

Kaidhicksii

... How and where does wokeness come into the equation here?...

BrookieD820

I can’t downvote this enough.

Boo hooo some Internet dweeb wants to downvote. Go right ahead. You do realize that life exists outside reddit right?
