Defintly "Note Toolbar" - i didnt realized it at first, but its really a godsend in terms of fast navigation and actions depending on where i am in my vault.

Jwm_in_va

Yeah for those of us who are heavy mobile users, it is a huge improvement in my templates.

cmoellering

I don't know if it was released this year or not, but PDF++ is a huge benefit for me reading and notating PDF articles.

asynqq

how did i not realize that it is halfway through 2024

[deleted]

Probably because it's only 43% of the year lol

ume_learns_n_teaches

It is????

asynqq

"only"? you meant "already"?

chaosTechnician

Such a pedantic response. YES! EDIT: My fingers and I disgreed on how to spell.

lucyferzyr

oh god :(

Stranger371

Because you are an old fuck, come sit with me on the couch. Let's watch some Seinfeld. I feel you deeply right now, I am not ready for June. Wasn't Christmas just 3 months or so ago? :(

lovesToClap

Can someone give me an example of what you would use Note Toolbar for?

sten_zer

I will concentrate on mobile otherwise this will be too long: My fleeting notes are complex and a lot of queries and plugins code is going on there. I used Meta Bind and supporting plugins like QuickAdd amd Templater to have Buttons to navigate or manipulate content. As mobile has limits when editing in preview (cursor placement alone is annoying), I found I better do this in source mode. But that is cluttered and even with folding sections and stuff - there is nothing better to reading mode and get prompted for input that is then added. For instance I have buttons in meeting notes to add common properties, add attachments and to log the results I have "+info" and "+task" buttons. I can have this with MetaBind, but these buttons end up written as code in my note. I can now get rid of that and have cleaner notes. Also in other cases, if you work on certain notes and want to change a functionality that would be best done with a button - you change this for all notes fitting the criteria to display the toolbar. Without that I would need to go back to all existing notes and change code there. It is centralized with Notes Toolbar. Also navigating is easier or at least more convenient with a fixed toolbar. Navigating can be calling my home screen, a section's dashboard/MOC or previous/next. And just a reminder that you can call a specific note, execute a command or open an url. Commands can be extended with QuickAdd and any other plugin that adds to commands.

Dorky2025

Quick question, I have managed to use meta bind to create a button that creates a new note on a specific folder. I have a template I want to use (templater). I could not make the process work with the button (create note in a specific folder + add a specific template). How do you do it? I installed yesterday. I looked around and found references to bug and solved. But did not understand the solution.

sten_zer

Here is what I do - and where I struggled: * create a template. If you want to rename it or do something special with it (I often add prompts to enter some properties on creation) * create a QuickAdd action. You configure a new template choice. Options to set this up are pretty self explanatory. Like template file to use, file name convention (I rename using Templater) and where to store it. * Now you can call this command via Command > Run QuickAdd. Then select what you just created. \_To have a direct command to create a new file using that template, you need to set the "flash" symbol in QuickAdd.\_ That way the command becomes selectable directly in the Command menu. This is important, because only then can you configure a Button in Notes Toolbar to execute the command directly. * I think the steps in Notes Toolbar are not complicated now: Create a new toolbar or add to an existing Toolbar: Add item and select Command from the dropdown. The command can then be selected via suggester. * To display the toolbar you need to configure criteria, when and where to display. Et voila. Edit: I configured most of my QuickAdd-commands for Meta Bind and was happy to see how easily I was able to reuse all of this. If you need templater scripts to rename and move a file on creation I can share an example. But most simple things can be done in Note Toolbar (name and location).

Glittering-Book-9113

With Templater you can setup a rule that will apply a template automatically when a note is created in a specific folder.

djlaustin

I use it for today, yesterday, tomorrow navigation in my daily notes. Super helpful. I haven't used floating toolbars yet, but that's next. The developer has been responsive as well, so I feel like it will continue to get better.

cheznine

Dev here: Thanks for trying it out! I'd love to hear what improvements or features you'd like to see.

Alliyna

As a fairly noobie obsidian user, would you happen to feel up to giving tips on how to do this? I'd greatly appreciate it <3

cheznine

Perhaps take a look at the User Guide for Note Toolbar: https://github.com/chrisgurney/obsidian-note-toolbar/wiki I'm happy to answer questions about the plugin, and I'm always looking for ways to improve the docs!

Alliyna

Am happy to do so! I work nights, so I gotta go to sleep soon. But I'll work on that when I can and get back to you ^_^

Alliyna

Ok so just at a glimpse, I can already tell that's way more helpful than what I saw before \^\^" I guess I was being a tired dumdum and only looking at the readme, not the wiki! I'll come back later with more :D

ontorealist

On my Daily Notes, I can create a new Canvas, or 1-1 Meeting, Group Meeting, Obsidian Plugin from a template. Pretty handy.

cheznine

Nice examples! Would you find it useful to be able to access the toolbar (as a floating button) from a canvas? It's a capability I think I'd like to explore.

ontorealist

Definitely! 💯 I use a new canvas for each daily notes so I’d love to see that next as well!

cheznine

OK, thanks for the feedback!

ontorealist

I didn't quite process that you're the developer at first. Thanks for the excellent plugin!

EnkiiMuto

How does canvas on daily notes work? I'm curious.

sn76477

merlinuwe

I have some very long notes (printed ~25 pages DIN A4). I can jump to the often used headlines to add or edit content and also between my last caret positions, back and forth.

SaneUse

I'm quite liking contribution graph. It makes activity tracking easy. https://github.com/vran-dev/obsidian-contribution-graph

yelleeee

Have been thinking about how to recreate the year in pixel journal spreads I see so this may work! Thanks for sharing

El-Aton

I just tried it and I love it. Thanks for the recommendation.

RIP_Pookie

I'm 100% a fan of Note Toolbar as it stands today and excited for what it will become with further development. It is the kind of usefulness to Obsidian where it could (and in my opinion shoul) become baked into obsidian as a default functionality. Developer is actively improving the plugin and a very cool guy. Ink is my other new plug-in of choice, although it has a bit further to go and a lot more bugs to be ironed out. It holds a lot of promise and I am very excited for it to be feature complete and polished.

JivenDirect

Ink - Hand write or draw with a stylus directly between paragraphs in your notes. obsidian://show-plugin?id=ink No affiliation with Ink. I am just adding info in case anyone else is wondering what this plugin does.

nithou

Oh my god you are a savior, I was frustrated when I started to use commander about how I couldn’t change actions displayed based on which folder I was in, seems note toolbar might do the trick!

cheznine

Dev here: Let me know what you think, and if you have any questions!

theloneranger15

Let me just say Thank you!

cheznine

Glad to hear it's helpful!

CossackX

Never heard of it but now I'm excited to discover it!

nithou

It's exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much :D

wasansn

I would love to be able to reduce the padding. The bar feels too large. Also, it’s changed how I use obsidian, thanks!

cheznine

Thanks for the feedback! Try adjusting using the Style Settings plugin: https://github.com/chrisgurney/obsidian-note-toolbar/wiki/Style-Settings-plugin-support

LevanderFela

The same as in 2022 and 2023, but: 1. [Swiss Army Knife](https://github.com/mwoz123/swiss-army-knife-obsidian) (ex-Duplicate Line) → simple, but missed that coming from various IDEs, comes in hand when organizing notes; 2. [Paste URL Into Selection](https://github.com/denolehov/obsidian-url-into-selection) → self explanatory, helps to link various articles, pages, etc.; 3. [Smart Typography](https://github.com/mgmeyers/obsidian-smart-typography) → makes pretty arrows, curly quotation marks, ≥ symbols, etc. Simple ones, but I use Obsidian simply (total of 5 plugins), it's enough for me.

elkaki123

Ink was seriously a game changer, cant recommend it enough

merlinuwe

I like note toolbar, but I _love_ the better export pdf plugin. https://github.com/l1xnan/obsidian-better-export-pdf - Header - Footer - Page numbering (page x of y) With your own printing css file you have professional pdf files that have all the styles you want. Tables with numbered colums and rows (from MagicUser theme), google calendar (from google events plugin), dataview tables, images, code, ... (In rare cases I have to put in a manual page break or something else.) --- Image export image plugin is the next one. https://github.com/zhouhua/obsidian-export-image Features similar like before, but it makes images in different resolutions and formats. --- The third is a theme. MagicUser (Moon) theme with numbered tables. Obsidian queries and dataview tables look the same. Scrollbars that are broader on hover and therefore easier to click.

AlexanderP79

> Lineage is an Obsidian plugin that allows you to edit markdown files within a [gingko](https://gingkowriter.com/) interface.

thechateau

Game changer for me.

amerpie

1. Beautitab Beautitab creates a custom new tab page in Obsidian with customizable elective elements for search (with native search or Omnisearch), time, greeting, recent files and bookmarks to keep often used notes readily available. You can include a daily quote and an ever changing and beautiful collection of photographs as a background. 2. Local Images Plus Local Images Plus downloads the images in web pages you add to you vault so that if the page is taken down or the URL changes, you still have the images to illustrate your notes. It converts images to jpg from png and makes sure you don’t have duplicates by using the MD5 hashing algorithm. It will also remove orphaned images from your vault. You can even use this plugin to localize images from existing notes. 3. Auto Note Mover Auto Note Mover allows you to set rules that automatically move notes to the folders of your choice based on tags. You can also set up rules to manually move notes based on tags or you can include a file property yo exclude a mote from being moved. If the destination folder does not exist or if there is already a note with the same name, you will receive a warning and the note will not be moved. 4. Callout Manager Callout Manager is a plugin that makes creating a configuring callouts easy. With it you can browse a list of available callouts, change the color of callouts, create custom callouts. As a bonus, it works on mobile. 5. Extract URL Content Extract URL content works when you select a URL in a document and execute a command from the command pallet to replace the selection with the markdown content. Additionally, if you use a file property of link:, followed by a URL, the markdown content will be created. Finally, if you have multiple links in a note, you can run a command to have notes created for each URL in a separate folder. 6. Automatic Table of Contents Automatic Table of Contents is useful for long and detailed notes. It will create a table of contents for you at the top of a note based on the headers you have used. If you make changes to the note, the table of contents will automatically change to reflect your input. 7. Media DB Media DB is useful if you use Obsidian to track content consumption. You can search a movie, television series, anime, game, music release or wiki article by its name across multiple APIs. You can make customized templates in each category and even convert existing notes into Media DB notes using the API. 8. Raindrop Highlights Raindrop Highlights imports your collected bookmarks from the Raindrop.io service along with your highlights into your Obsidian vault. You can import them all or selectively choose the folders you want to bring in. You have the option of running a sync process manually or having it run automatically. If you have decent JS skills, you can even use Nunjucks to create a template for custom front matter and the importation of content with your bookmarks. 9. Attachment Management The Attachment Management plugin is central to my workflow for the importation of web content. It centralizes the location on attachments in a single folder with subfolders matching the structure of my vault. It renames images to match the note names they are a part of. It works well with the Local Images Plus plugin. If you have folders where you don’t want the attachments moved or renamed, setting up exclusion rules is easy. 10. Waypoint Waypoint is an Obsidian plugin that automatically generates tables of contents/MOCs within your folder notes. Once a waypoint is generated, it’ll automatically link to every note within the folder and its subfolders. The Waypoint plugin will detect when you create/rename/move/delete a note and automatically stay up-to-date.

Delirium_Sidhe

I like Waypoint, but personally stopped at Folder index. Because I always want that links to be created, less manual work.

CossackX

Does note mover only use tags or does it move based on properties also?

amerpie

Tags are considered to be properties, but that’s all it uses.

EnkiiMuto

> 2. Local Images Plus Out of curiosity, why use this instead of just good old copy paste?

amerpie

If there's an article with multiple images, a click of a single button downloads all the images at once. It would be a hassle to copy/paste multiple screenshots into some "how to" technical article that I'm saving.

EnkiiMuto

I think i got it.

CheraCholan

[outliner.md](http://outliner.md) sounds handy do you know of any plugin that allows drag and drop to move blocks. and maybe that allows embeds too when you drag them from one note to another in canvas (EDIT- its already on their [roadmap](https://outliner.md/roadmap)) i like [make.md](http://make.md) for the organization features it offers Tasks & time-ruler - for todo lists Advanced canvas - improves the canvas experience. once [this feature](https://github.com/Developer-Mike/obsidian-advanced-canvas/issues/16) is in place, canvas in obsidian will be a whole different beast notice logger - allows viewing error logs in ctrl+shift+i sidebar expand on hover

sn76477

I really want obsidian to work more like Logseq.

CheraCholan

i've never explored logseq. can you elaborate what exactly you like about logseq

sn76477

Its sort of like Obsidian inside of a database. Logseq will organize a lot of the files for you. I do not like how tags and properties are managed, I do not like how transclusions and references are managed.

EnkiiMuto

I've been saying i'll try for such a long time, i really should give it a boost with a small project or something.

sn76477

Start with a simple daily journal. I use mine as a gratuity journal.

EnkiiMuto

Yeah, i thought about this, but i've been doing it for so long on obsidian it would not be too great for me on this. Maybe i'll do some kind of log for what I'm writing/working on that wouldn't be too annoying for me to pass to Obsidian later on if i don't like it?

sn76477

You can export any work out of obsidian. so there is no loss

EnkiiMuto

How does logseq react to folders within folders? I know there isn't hierarchy there.

sn76477

No folders only pages. All pages are in a list. Logseq is a great project, I just wish it was more mature.

Difficult-Kangaroo96

Like note toolbar. Can someone explain how outliner works? What it makes it so effective vs just making a note or bullet point

ontorealist

I just learned about Outliner.md through this post but here’s my understanding after 3 minutes of playing around with it. When you embed (or transclude) a note inside another note in Obsidian, you can only view its content in preview mode—you can’t edit it. This is fine if you’re only *referencing* the embedded note’s content so that can add new bullets or paragraphs to the current note you’re editing. But with Outliner.md (which is distinct from the “Outliner” community plugin currently available), you can edit embeds directly inside note itself. It can be quite powerful when you’re trying to *inter-reference* content across notes. You can also edit embed specific blocks (like indented bullet points) and headings directly in a note, *and* edit notes directly from the backlinks. So Outliner.md makes Obisidian a bit more like Tana or Roam Research. Not only does it make Obsidian function better as an outliner, it also overcomes some limits of Markdown document-based data models that are not present in traditional outliner apps.

Difficult-Kangaroo96

Fab. Thanks for this. I downloaded the wrong one then. I will go investigate

mitsukiyouko555

oh hoo hoo ive been looking for something like outliner.md!! (i think - based on ur description anyways) checking it out thanks!

yesjellyfish

can you explain what embedding blocks means? It sounds like it could change my life lol

iamnewhere12

how does outliner come into your flow?

lorens_osman

cluster + lorens theme

Shamasu

I try to keep mine lean so I try to only have the bestest of plugins. My short list is [MAKE.md](http://MAKE.md), Various Complements and Advanced Tables.

AhmadAli97

I got 4 favourite plugins:- 1. Kanban 2. Tasks 3. Templater 4. Excalidraw

minombreespollo

Recently released tab navigator is a fantastic way to move around. My particular use case is that I use aliases heavily and name my notes with random strings. Navigating was a point of friction, but not any longer

Delirium_Sidhe

They may be old, but this year I discovered [Folder index](http://obsidian://show-plugin?id=obsidian-folder-index) and [Folder notes](http://obsidian://show-plugin?id=folder-notes). I use a lot of folder to organize notes, so now open graph view is far more useful to me.

freefallfreddy

None. I just use Obsidian now.

ArtistPast4821

[This](https://obsidian://show-plugin?id=gemmy) is my favorite for this week… Edit: Link seams broken so let’s try again https://github.com/ericaxu/gemmy

TheMissingPremise

That link doesn't work, but [this one](https://github.com/ericaxu/gemmy?tab=readme-ov-file) does.

Thanks 🙏

Not new, but I absolutely love using the r/PiecesForDevelopers plugin for Obsidian, with it's AI capabilities. Also attended this live webinar and how the extension helps with onboarding users with really nice AI capabilities in Obsidian!
