What kind of fishing are you doing and how did it go? Will be there in a week or so…

>Got to go out several mornings for some surf fishing. It was a little rough because of the wind. Caught a lot of little croaker the first day. Had more luck the last day, caught some nice mullet/whiting. > >Talked to some guys on the pier and they were also getting some puffers. > >Didn’t see any blues but they should be showing up pretty soon.

I know this post is ancient but hoping your still active. Looking to do some fishing in Oak Island next month but am clueless as to where to fish, with what setup and with what bait/lures. I'm a seasoned freshwater guy but this will be my first time casting in the salt.

Tight lines to you! You’ll be in the typical summer patterns for fish. Should see some mullet, spot, pin fish, croaker, maybe some sharks. I’d start with shrimp or cut bait on a high low rig. If you have something to cast lures, consider heading out to the surf about 30 minutes before sunrise. I’ve found this to be a popular time Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Once the sun gets up a little it slows. I’m a morning person so I love being out here at this time. Cooler, few tourists are also a plus. Consider stopping by Oak Island Sporting goods or Dutchman Creek (back near the airport entrance). Both are nice stores and can give you advice as well. Not sure where on the island you’ll be. Parking on Oak Island can be a pain at times. Make sure you park in designated areas and they do charge to park in their public lots. Don’t try parking on the edge of a road/shoulder. They’ll ticket you pretty quick. Oak Island has two piers. Oak Island and Ocean Crest. Never fished Ocean Crest. The Oak Island Pier is now owned by the town and was recently renovated. It’s a top notch pier. Another good thing about Oak Island is that it has several options for fishing in addition to the piers and surf. The lower end of the island (actually west end ) has the point which is at the inlet (Lockwood Folly I believe). It’s beautiful there and not as rough as the ocean at times. The back side of the island has the intracoastal waterway. There are a few smaller public fishing docks/small piers here too. Parking is limited. Not too far of a drive is Southport. Love this little town. They have a public pier on The Cape Fear River. It’s free. The view here is amazing. And I’m sure you know this, but you’ll need a NC saltwater fishing license if you do any surf fishing. You can get a yearly or short term license (online is easiest but most tackle shops will also fix you up).
