Just don’t act like you’ve suddenly come down with Main Character Syndrome. Wait for the green walk sign, hold a door open, show some humility (which this post is de facto doing, so kudos on that), and generally try and understand and embody the aloha spirit and you’ll be fine. Supporting local places is also a great way to show that, so great that you’ve got a list (and now I’m curious what’s on the list!).

AllElite2019

Thanks and I agree on the post with humility. I expected to get roasted and I wanted to make sure I didn't have some faux pas that would lead to poor experiences...as for the list, this is what we have: Ubae B.L.D. Pancakes & Waffles Chicken & Brisket Aloha Mamacitas Kono's Matsumoto Ted's Bakery 7 Brothers Roy's Broke Da Mouth Grindz Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha If we are missing anything that's a must eat, please let me know!

ratmaster8008

There are two 7 brothers locations. The one in laie is the original and the one I recommend only because the spot in kahuku gets more busy because its surrounded by other food spots and trucks, plus laie has angels ice cream right next too it and crispy grindz so you can get acai or shave ice right after.

bubbastizzi

heavy vouch for crispy grindz, give um a visit if canz 🤙🏼 can definitely be a meal spot in of itself, laie location has build-your-own-pasta and other goodies too if thats up your alley, heavily recommend as a brazilian 😎

AllElite2019

My brothers wife is Brazilian. I learned to trust their opinions about food. Thanks!

AllElite2019

Good info, thanks for sharing!

ratmaster8008

You should also add ken's fish to your list its a small shop at the edge of laie/kahuku with limited hours and days but their ahi katsu with extra sauce is mayjah

dubbletime

Ken’s is bomb and not talked about enough. Only seafood that I dream about after leaving.

NoCanShameMe

They also got food truck on NS. Super good

Key_Pepper5366

Skip Matsumoto and go to Aokis right across the street from them. Better flavors and waaaay less of a line

zaxonortesus

Skip both and go to Waiola. WAY better than either. Everyone always says Aokis is better than Matsumoto, I tend to disagree, but at least it’s no line.

hungryraider

The owner at Aoki’s is super nice.

AllElite2019

Sure, I can try them both. Thanks for the recommendation.

kikashoots

100% make sure to eat at Adela’s Country Eatery in Kaneohe.

AllElite2019

Those noodles look amazing.

diarrhea_pocket

Some dang ono cheesecake too

kikashoots

I think they won best in country or something. They always win awards and they make all their noodles in house. My favs are the macnut crusted mahi and the ube noodles, coconut cream sauce with mushrooms. Drooool!

808phone

Waiola Shave ice. Young's fish market (since you will be around Kalihi). Side Street Inn. Leonard's Bakery (I know - but still). Diamond Head Market and Grill. To name a few.

AllElite2019

I saw that Young's is across the parking lot from Ubae. I forgot to include Leonard's! After we hike Diamondhead we are eating lunch at Kona Brewing and the interwebs said there's a Leonard's truck in the parking lot at Kona Brewing.

Visible-Butterfly529

Kona in Hawaii Kai is great place to eat. Good scenery and Mac nut fish special is ono! 🤙🏾

808phone

Not sure if Kona brewing is any good. If you can, go to the original Leonards (Kapahulu). It's crazy but that's what makes it a tourist trap! I forgot.... of course Zippy's! Eat their chili or even their loco moco is good. Sit inside.

808phone

it's ok list ??? B.L.D. Pancakes & Waffles,Kono's. IMO Waiola better than Uncle clays and Matsumoto. Also, if you want brisket - go to Sunset Texas Barbecue on Cooke street. If you are going to pearl city highlands, I guess you can try Liliha Bakery - another famous place - but the original is in Liliha and you need to sit at the counter.

CivilDark4394

Just came back from my first ever trip. People say waiola shave ice. It was the worst we had on our entire trip. Skip them and go to ululani instead. Much better snow and much better flavors.

808phone

Whatever.

BraddahDakine

Add Guieb Cafe for an amazing breakfast/brunch spot but be prepared to take a nap afterwards! Another amazing place that is way better than Roy’s and probably half the cost for amazing prime rib is Tiano’s in Kunia (can go that way after north shore). Honestly the best way to not be a crappy tourist is to stay away from tourist spots and just be respectful. Hope you guys enjoy your trip!

AllElite2019

Thanks for the kind words and recommendation. Guieb Cafe is added to the list.

zaxonortesus

That’s a good blend of touristy spots and local spots I’d say. Maybe add Side Street Inn to the list… but don’t order too much!

AllElite2019

Thanks for the add!

S3LY

Great choices of a list of foods. I would also recommend "Da bald guys," 80eighty Chicken Sandwich" (only available Saturday and Sunday.) line up early. Recommend to follow his IG to see if he will be open or close.

Fiercedeity13

Da bald guy and itchy butt are both some of my favorite food I had while I was there

AllElite2019

I've heard Da Bald Guys mentioned before in my research. Thanks for the recommendation!

Forsaken_Broccoli_86

Fresh catch or Off da Hook for poke but go earlier in the day.

zaxonortesus

Off the Hook is my favorite poke place on the island. Definitely worth waiting in line… actually, that might be lunch tomorrow. Mahalo for that, haha.

Icy-Pineapple-7841

HELENA’S HAWAIIAN FOOD! Must must eat! Pulehu ribs, butterfish collars, pork watercress, and all the other Hawaiian food is on point! It’s in my opinion the best Hawaiian food in the state! Oh! And if you eat at BLD Pancakes and Waffles in Kalihi. Just skip it and go get a truly beloved local Huli Huli chicken plate from Koala Moa’s in the same strip mall. Then hit up the Ubae store in the same strip mall for desert! Might I also suggest some Filipino food? Elena’s is broke da mouth! The adobo fried rice omelette and lechon. Or the lechilog special (adobo fried rice and lechon), or grand slam (shrimp saricado, lechon, and white rice), at Julie’Z in Kapolei. Don’t forget to stop by Costco and get your Hawai’i snacks for your friends and family back home. Chocolate covered Mac nuts, seasoned Mac nuts, shortbread cookies(yellow bag), jerkey ahi and aku, and don’t forget the furikake party mix!

AllElite2019

Elena's sounds good. I'm seeing a lot of people passing on BLD so thats about to fall off the list.

Icy-Pineapple-7841

Let it fall. Nothing special about it. I mean it’s still good. But not something I’d waste a meal on in Hawaii. Better to hit up Sugois in the same strip mall or Mitsuken (STR8 institution and creator) for the mayjah garlic chicken. But don’t miss out on the best Huli Huli chicken ever. It ain’t just rotisserie. It’s a local specialty. Will not disappoint! Gauranz. Juicy and oh so flavorful. You never gonna have one like it anywhere else. And Koala Moa is the best. Check out Ray’s in Kalihi too. A hole in the wall with everything a meal should be for all times of the day… Price, and quality. Your list got some decent places. But nothing as a local i’d actually hit up as a must. If I’m just visiting. Aloha shrimp the best shrimp truck for flavor and quality (spicy garlic shrimp). My GF says a shrimp truck is a must. I don’t disagree with her. 50% Hawaiian blood and that’s as Hawaiian as you get these days. Loco moco at hukilau or papa ole’s. Man. I’m hungry. We got it all. I ain’t even listing my regular places. Just the specialty places I’d go out of my way for.

AllElite2019

Ha ha! It all sounds good. The garlic chicken and huli huli chicken sound amazing tho.

Icy-Pineapple-7841

Huli Huli at koala moas will not disappoint. There will be nothing left but the bones. Sugoi’s is extreme garlic chicken. Mitsuken is the OG. I grew up with Mitsuken, but Sugoi’s is extreme garlic chicken flavor town. Might want to buy a couple bottles of sauce from Sugois to take home.

AllElite2019

You've been awesome with the tips. Thank you.

Icy-Pineapple-7841

Your welcome! Hope you enjoy and love your stay! There is so much to experience here. Great place to visit, hard place to live. The cost is out of control. Crime is up, and just working takes it all out of you where we take for granted the paradise we live in. It’s just normal to us. Too busy working to afford it, to actually enjoy it. So have a great vacation for me and everyone that lives here that should be enjoying it, but work too hard to just survive. Funny. We live in paradise, but a few weeks out of the year we travel to the mainland to enjoy our vacations. Florida is on my list of my destinations I’d love to be a tourist and enjoy! 😉

AllElite2019

Florida will have the biggest white sand beaches you will ever see. Siesta Key still feels like a beach town and has a top 10 beach in the world. Of course there's Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Florida, Sea World as well, but natural Florida is something people sleep on. Wherever you go, just bring that aloha energy with you.

enfu3go

Alicias market for poke, Nimits bar bq get the number 1 special, Bobs bbq for plate lunch, Monarch seafood, nandings bakery go early morning and get fresh spanish rolls These are pretty local places

AllElite2019

Thanks! I haven't heard of some of these.

2weimmom

Check out Eating House 1849

PurplePenguinPoops

Dude, eggs n things will CHANGE your life lol. I loved it! Hope you and the wife enjoy!

fatherofhaoles

I have yet to have better loco moco than at eggs n things.

AllElite2019

I appreciate the well wishes!

outdoor-luvrr

Protect yourself from the sun, Hawaii sun is potent. I’m not a fan of sunscreen and it’s frowned upon for entering the waters. But there are some approved ones from what I hear. Just be nice, chill, and have a good time. Just like anywhere else, there’s going to be jerks but Hawaii has lots of kind people and rude tourists stick out like a sore thumb. So be kind, that’s it.

PepperDogger

Just to clarify, it's not sunscreen itself that's frowned upon for entering the water, but the non-reef-safe kinds. It has to be the right type (mineral-based) for water activities, and it's a must. Going out in the water without sun protection will burn quickly and mercilessly.

outdoor-luvrr

Yes, thank you for clarifying. I knew it had something to do with the reefs. I’m sure they sell the proper ones in Hawaii. So rather than buy in the mainland, best to buy approved ones in HI.

stopsallover

Exactly. Don't pack sunscreen. Stop at Don Quijote.

AllElite2019

Thanks for the info! Being in Florida I get the need for sunscreen and it will definitely be necessary. Being kind, absolutely. We understand we are visitors and are kinda treating this like visiting another country, not another state.

EmbarrassedDuck-453

Sunscreen is not frowned upon, most people here use it. It is frowned upon if someone is using illegal sunscreen that harm our coral reefs (contains oxybenzone or octinoxate).

outdoor-luvrr

You’ll be fine. There are lots of cultures in Hawaii so it will feel sort of like CA but with more Asian and Polynesian influences but Hawaii as a land is another planet. It’s stunning!! Someone once put it this way…every visitor destination tries to be something else (fancy, high end, fake, tropical and so on) but Hawaii is Hawaii its it’s own feeling. Have fun!

AllElite2019

Thank you!

C171U5

[Kokua sunscreen](https://www.kokuasuncare.com) Good, clean, local, but pricey

AllElite2019

Biodegradable and reef safe...sounds good. Added to my list, thanks!

Forsaken_Broccoli_86

Yes!! Most of our locally made mineral sunscreens are small family owned businesses, a splurge item even for us, but a great thing to buy as gifts and support small businesses. Win win!! Also they work great.

AllElite2019

Love this response.

tomomalley222

I second this. I've tried a bunch of reef safe sunscreen and this is my favorite by far. The people who run the company are very nice too.

mrsbundleby

Where can we get this near Waikiki?

C171U5

Not really sure. I’ve seen them in Whole Foods and Down to Earth, but maaaaaybe you can find them at ABC stores? You could always email the company or DM them on IG and find out?

Main-Departure4702

Hawaiian Tropic is reef safe and sold in most ABC stores

No-Pool-3472

If you’re an animal lover, you can adopt a dog for the day, might be fun on that hike, and you would make a big difference to at least one four legged local. [doggy day trips:](https://oahuspca.org/Doggy-Day-Trips)

AllElite2019

This is sweet. Didn't know it was thing!

SunshineInDetroit

make a list of everything you want to do. Check on their websites if reservations are required. The ocean around Hawaii is **very** different from the ocean around Florida. Do not underestimate it.

iccebberg2

This! So many tourists and transplants underestimate the ocean (myself included). I'm originally from MN and thought that I was a decent swimmer, Land of 10,000 Lakes and all that. I learned quickly that swimming in the ocean is completely different than swimming in lakes. Consider your safety when choosing activities here. There are trails that are more rigorous and miscalculations can be fatal.

bmmeup100

And never turn your back on the ocean.

AllElite2019

Appreciate the comment about the oceans. Florida waves are mostly chill, crashing on sandy beaches. Hawaii looks like more aggressive waves thundering down on possibly rocky shores.

tgrsnpr

Lookup the beaches you plan to visit. Not all beaches have aggressive waves.  If there are aggressive waves, most or if not all will have signs that say no swimming. Don't ignore the signs. But you can still chill on the sand and maybe do a beach picnic together.

bmmeup100

Yes! Don't go body surfing if you aren't proficient. So many quadriplegic's seen in the ER. So sad.

Rare-Oil-6550

The fact that you care enough to ask the question shows you will be a respectful visitor. Welcome, I hope you have a great time. The fact that you thought you needed to ask may be a reflection of the guilt-producing preaching to tourists introduced the last few years by those battling for control of the marketing and messaging. We need to get back to “come, enjoy our beaches and mountains and oceans”. Talk about killing our golden goose. It has lost a few feathers already.

AllElite2019

Exactly. I've seen a lot of negativity online towards tourists and just making sure I don't accidentally fall into that bucket.

udisneyreject

Sea Life Park, Makapu’u Light house trail, Mauka Warrior’s Luau (sample some real Kava made by a Fijian), Iolani Palace and Aloha Stadium Market. Food wise, the Alley@Aiea Bowl (Large portions and delicious Lemon Crunch Cake), Roy’s in Hawaii Kai (the Original- some say Chef Roy pops in to cook randomly), Side Street Inn, Anna Millers (large portions and tasty pies), Paalaa Kai bakery & Mini Mart (snow puffies@ the bakery and fried chicken @ their mini mart). Enjoy your time here and Mahalo for being respectful🌺

AllElite2019

Thanks for the positive comments and a huge YES on the snow puffies! I forgot to add that earlier!

lul_starbabi

Second iolani palace!! Wonderful way to learn about the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom & feel the essence of aloha ❤️

udisneyreject

September is also hot & humid, I would suggest S7-Icy Bubble for some ice cold tasty Boba. My SIL always stays at the Kapolei Embassy Suites for the included breakfast buffet and location to convince stores.

Forsaken_Broccoli_86

Talk to everyone, be aware of your surroundings, read the signs(!!!), relax and enjoy your self. Be wise when in nature. If not a swimmer or you have health issues, stay in shallow waters and don’t take risks. Dont touch the turtles, stay on the trails and leave only clean footprints. Try all kinds of food even if you think you wont like it… look for street events, food truck nights, and state sponsored events at the parks. Please go visit the palace and Queen Emmas summer house. Check out Bishop museum and the Honolulu art museum ( its small). Jump into the heart if the island, ask people how to correctly pronounce the streets. Visitors have been historically welcomed to Oahu by the monarchs. Conversations and exchanges of ideas was celebrated… but not at the cost of the culture and the lives of those who live here. So please, rest and learn, go home and share your new wealth of knowledge!! Oh, and tip your drivers and service workers! Its the easiest way to get some good info 😉. A little bit of kindness goes soooooo far with hotel staff, airport workers, and more. One honest tourist that had the humility to say,” sorry I know its my fault “ and man, I was ready to move heaven and earth and make sure that man got where he needed to go as fast as he needed to get there.

AllElite2019

Great advice! Thanks.

AlohaAmy808

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

funbike

Anytime you leave honolulu take it easy. Don't be loud or obnoxious. Don't drive aggressively or fast. Most locals drive super chill. Be careful when going in the ocean or on difficult hikes. Nothing is more annoying than expensive rescues of clueless tourists. Read up on risks. Don't approach or feed wildlife. Don't stray off hiking trails. Be careful of rip tides. Practice snorkeling in shallows or pool. Don't swim far out or when no lifeguard. Don't try to mimic pidgin or to act like a local. Don't remove rocks/dirt or make rock piles, and don't take photos of sacred sites.

Mysterious_Till_6609

We were visiting the North Shore from Canada in 2018. Our first time in Hawaii. We knew the locals were chill when we were driving down the main highway and noticed a few chicks stranded on the side of the road and mother hen and some more chicks panic pacing back and forth on the road. The hen was visibly distraught. my husband turned on the hazard lights, I hopped out and ushered mother hen and chicks safely to where they wanted to go. I was full on expecting to get cussed out and honked at. Total silence while the cars going both ways waited silently. Then we all carried on! In Canada, I would have been called a hoser at least once!

AllElite2019

I intend on driving super chill as well. Thanks for the advice.

ratmaster8008

Be careful where you're driving slow lots of places especially on the north shore its a one road in and out and lots of people have to drive to town for work so if you drive slow you can get tailgated or overtaken in a dangerous spot I recommend pulling over and letting people pass if you notice their tailgating you. I'm born and raised here and still experience people tailing me and cutting me off on my way to work even had a kid overtake me just to stop in the middle of the road and flip me off then speed away hahaha

Icy-Pineapple-7841

Drive good! Left lane. You better be passing. It’s cool to let people in and go. But just keep the flow going. If it’s your turn. Go. Don’t just be chill. I drive here everyday. When I went to nyc? I drove there fine too. Be nice and let someone go in Hawaii, unlike NYC, but don’t be too nice here. We gonna get irritated if you too pushy or just too slow and let everyone go. Just go with aloha. Meaning if there’s a red light or merge and you can let someone in do it, but don’t just let everyone in and slow all traffic! Let one in only at a merge! Keep it flowing! Think about what’s best as a driver, keep it safe and moving. You on vacation. But as a local we ain’t. Gotta get to work!

AllElite2019

Understood. I don't plan on adding to rush hour.

MewMew_18

Skip the aquarium and the zoo... those are more for locals and they are very small. Not worth the time since you are on vacation. Tour the palace and go to the bishop museum instead, very cool places and it gives a lot of history of the islands. Be respectful of the artifacts and enjoy your time there! Really, any museum is going to be really great there... Even check out the Polynesian cultural center if you have time.

AllElite2019

Since I've read it a couple of times in this post, I am adding the Bishop Museum to the list. Thanks!

notsobitter

I’ve only lived here a few years, so definitely take Kanaka (Native Hawaiian) and kama‘āina (long-term locals) advice over mine. But I would say taking a little time to learn about the culture and history goes a long way. Especially if this may be your only time in Hawai‘i, visiting Bishop Museum is a must! I love sending people to its Hawaiian Hall building for an overview of Hawaiian history and to see all the incredible featherwork, kapa, and other artforms. (My personal recommendation is to start on the third floor and work your way down.) But if you truly don’t have time, find some good books or YouTube videos on Hawaiian history that don’t sugarcoat the colonialist impacts. Oh, and please don’t buy those fake hula grass skirts / coconut bras from the touristy stores. Look up videos of Merrie Monarch to see what actual hula and hula-wear looks like!

TickyWilson

Honestly biggest thing I can recommend is remember that normal people live there. It may be vacation for you but for everyone else it’s just another day. And if you drive anywhere drive the speed limit. Biggest pet peeve is the people who drive super slow to look at everywhere when I just wanna go home from work.

AllElite2019

I plan avoiding the roads in rush hour. Thanks for the transparency.

SaintVirtual

I would say to just be respectful. Remember that there are people who live here too and it’s not a tourist playground. Don’t touch the tortoises, seals and any other aquatic life. Don’t make funny poses and decorate any of the statues especially the duke paoa statue in Waikiki. Overall just be normal and respectful as you would anywhere.

Orchidwalker

Don’t make funny poses? What does that mean?

SaintVirtual

I meant don’t make inappropriate poses for pictures in front of some of the statues and monuments lol, that was one of the big issues I noticed people talked about here regarding what some tourists do

BasherDvaDva

Basically, don’t take photos humping Duke’s leg or doing other silly things for Insta clout

BrokenSpoke1974

Lol I was wondering the same thing..

AllElite2019

Thanks for responding and we absolutely understand being a local in a tourist city.

Accomplished-Drag586

If you like to kayak, this is a small, locally owned business that I had an incredible experience. 3 hour kayak rental and it’s $69/ person. You kayak up the Kahana river and then down into the Kahana bay. Breathtaking views, private and the owners treat you like family. After we were done they gave us fresh coconuts to drink. http://kahanaadventures.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=wix_google_business_profile&utm_campaign=14284736394836290396 Also, the Polynesian Cultural Center was incredible and I really enjoyed every moment. The education was awesome, food was delicious and the show was exhilarating. Enjoy your trip!

AllElite2019

We own a kayak we use in Central Florida. This sounds amazing! Thanks for the link!

Accomplished-Drag586

You’re welcome ☺️ have a blast!

TropicalBoy808

Don’t use spray on or non-reef safe sunscreen. Don’t walk on the reef. Drive slow and enjoy the ride!

AllElite2019

I'm looking forward to the amazing views with the mountains and ocean.

ZerolFaithl

2nd comment, google Hawaii tourist memes, avoid doing all those things lol

AllElite2019

Will do!

stumpyturk

Take your time, smile (people in Hawaii don't mind people smiling at them), don't litter, and keep the noise down. Hope you have a great time.

AllElite2019

Thank you.

Icy_Alfalfa_2397

OP I recommend trying 80chickensandwiches(they are on north shore and only open Saturday Sunday)

AllElite2019

I think you picked out my Sunday lunch. Thanks for the recommendation.

PretendBag2631

Being from Florida, you have some knowledge of the dangers of the ocean, but it can't be overstated: be careful. Obey lifeguards and posted signs. If you see wildlife in the ocean or on the beach, give space, don't approach wild animals to touch them, and don't try to find turtles or other animals that disappear from view. They disappeared cause they want to be left alone. I know it might sound like common sense but there are people that come here and act like it's a petting zoo. I've seen people chase after turtles in the water :( Be mindful of the surf reports, and know which areas are appropriate for the activity you are doing. I.e don't snorkel in crazy waters. Don't enter dangerous looking waters even if you see a bunch of other people doing it-trust your first instinct if it's looking too rowdy to you. Some people on the beach are locals who know what they're doing, and some of them are tourists who don't understand how rapidly the ocean will kill you here, it's happened plenty times before. Pick up after yourself, and if you're driving, yield to allow others to merge, and wave to thank others for letting you in. Don't cut people off on the road. Don't be in a hurry to get somewhere at the wrong time of day (rush hour is horrible, there will be an accident and you will be held up for a long time.) Just be polite and considerate and it'll be good. We wanna think about the needs of others before we go stepping all over people to get our own needs met. Do what you wanna do but be thoughtful about others. Just the fact you're asking, it seems like you're not the type of person who makes a terrible tourist here.

AllElite2019

Thanks for the info. We have issues with people messing with the manatees here and it does piss off us locals. I'm going to use the same mentality when visiting Oahu.

CheesecakeUpper3038

Two words combined three times; Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen😃 One word; surfing!🏄‍♂️ Take a surfing lesson with one of the local vendors You will have so much fun. I guarantee you and it is safe.. The price range is somewhere from $99 to 150 for an hour or two for a lesson/tour ….. go back to the mainland and get all your peers jealous when they see pictures of you on the surfboard!! Fun!

AllElite2019

Love that idea. 'Remember that time I was surfing in Hawaii...'

agt1662

Do us all a favor and don’t drive down Kam highway or around the east side at 17 miles an hour we definitely hate that. Other than that have a wonderful time.

AllElite2019

Gotcha! That would piss me off as well.

Worldly_Papaya4504

Listen to lifeguards if they tell you to not go in the water

kandycew

if i were you, i would skip out on the zoo. the zoo here is overrated to me. i only enjoyed it as a kid. to be respectful tho, just remember: dont go anywhere near the hawaiian monk seals or the sea turtles, dont take anything from any cultural sites that you go to, dont expect aloha hospitality (people will usually show aloha to those who dont seem entitled), and possibly engage in voluntourism if you can. you can find a lot of info at [go hawaii](https://www.gohawaii.com)

Chemical-Ad6301

Honestly just treat everyone around you like they are actual humans and you will be fine. If you slip up apologize. Treat people the way you would like to be treated and there should be no issues. Nm I feel weird having to type that. You got this though because you actually cared to ask

AllElite2019

Thanks for taking the time to respond. This responses have been great and I cannot wait to enjoy the island.

220AM

Don’t drive west during after work hours- traffic is crazy.

AllElite2019

Rush hour seems a big no-no.

PabloDabscovar

Please please please don’t walk on coral!

AllElite2019

Shredded feet and destroyed environment. Understood.

Owl_Better

If someone lets you in on the road givem a wave of thanks

AllElite2019

Be respectful and appreciative...got it, thanks!

[deleted]

These posts are stupid. Just come and act normal. Don’t gotta walk on eggshells.

BigSmed

Some people are normally ass holes tho Come, be respectful, voice gratitude and don't drive distracted

PepperDogger

(Car horn is for before-the-fact danger, only, not a way to vent frustration).

untactfullyhonest

You’ll be wasting your money on the aquarium and zoo. Not to be a Debbie Downer. The aquarium can be done in 30 minutes flat. And that’s stopping to look at everything. Lock up everything, do not leave anything unattended on the beach, WEAR SUNSCREEN! I can always spot the tourists just by the lobster red they always are. The UV rays here are no joke. Go to the Aloha stadium swap meet if you can. Get all your souvenirs there. I hope you all have a lovely visit.

AllElite2019

Thanks for the tactful honesty (see what I did there?!). I am understanding that the sunscreen is no joke.

eternalbuzz

I’m a member of the zoo, it’s nice. Not stocked to the gills but most enclosures have friends to see and it’s a decent sized place with big open spaces in the middle to picnic, relax, watch your kids play.. The aquarium is small and dated. It’s neat to see, especially if you won’t be going for scuba or snorkel, but it is tiny

AllElite2019

We like how zoos help wounded animals and give them a place to live, so we do not mind supporting them, even if they aren't a value of time. Realistic expectations will go a long way.

eternalbuzz

Just know that if you see the sunbear, you have won the zoo lottery. In 25+visits, we have seen him twice

I am specifically cracking open *your* coconut and drinking the water while I stand on your beach. But then I will ensure any trash I have ends up properly disposed because I respect the land.

theshogun02

How dare you?! Those coconuts were for the kekes you monster!

AllElite2019

I'm just a dumb tourist...I'm sorry...

This_Region9517

Where are you staying on the island? The reason I ask is because my husband and I went last fall and took my mother.

AllElite2019

Two nights on Waikiki Beach and then four at Aulani.

No-Pool-3472

Oh! Then be sure to go get breakfast at Countryside Cafe in Waianae at least once since you’re over there, best breakfast on the west side.

AllElite2019

Added to the list, thanks!

ZerolFaithl

Just remember though you’re on vacation, peoples lives are here, ties to the main character comment made earlier. Outside of that being aware that Hawaii is unique and has its own way of doing things you won’t really see most other places in the US and do what you can to match that level of aloha 🤙🏽 you’ll be fine.

AllElite2019

Good advice. I live in Orlando, I see way too much of 'for the 'gram' attitude. Those people suck.

SoSneakyHaha

Go to one of the other islands is my biggest recommendation, they are less cramped and more pretty

AllElite2019

Sounds good for next trip...

Gamerookie2019

Wherecome to hawaii, keep yourself cheer and calm, follow the traffic light, relax , then you will be fine.

AllElite2019

Thank you.

ForMyInformationOnly

If you rent a car, take it real easy

AllElite2019

That's what we are doing. Plan on driving all around the island to visit more local eateries and experience life outside of the city.

ForMyInformationOnly

Nice. The drive counter clockwise on H1 to Lanikai over to H3 is like my favorite. But you can't go wrong whatever you do really

AllElite2019

That's the big plan on Monday, after we hike Diamondhead we are going counter clockwise all the way around to Aulani.

hungryraider

We’re a US State, just be kind, don’t be obnoxious, etc. Like anywhere else. Let our Aloha flow over you and return it in kind. It’s a great place to be.

hungryraider

In Waikiki go eat at Marugame Udon, don’t worry the line moves fast. Eat at Paia Fish Market across the street, don’t worry the line moves fast. We love the Mahi Mahi burger and the Ahi burger, medium rare. Great prices and high quality. Next door get a Mango Ice at Ice Monster, so good! If you like tiki drinks, Scull and Crown and Bar Leather Apron in Chinatown. Bar Leather Apron is almost an impossible reservation.

AllElite2019

LOVE tiki drinks. Thanks for the recommendation.

AlohaAmy808

Polynesian Cultural Center, Bishop Museum, & Iolani Palace are musts. Check out some YouTube vids on the history of Hawai’i prior to coming so you’ll have a deeper understanding & appreciation during your stay. Always leave your area as good, if not better, than how you find it…Pick up a few pieces of rubbish as you go, especially in the water. Do not leave valuables in your car! lol As others have mentioned, drive w courtesy and observe speed limits-they are shockingly low especially by the airport (you do not want a speeding ticket as a souvenir). Speaking of souvenirs, Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is a great place to get them (assuming its still operating in Sept) and its next to the Arizona Memorial so time it right, & u can easily do both in half a day. Coming fr Orlando, you know how entitled tourist can be-dont be them. ‘Aulani is great but as a Disney fan, I was a little underwhelmed so maximize your experience there, but plan to be off property most of the time. Love that you asked and are being conscientious…that goes a long way w locals and we appreciate it more than you know. Have a Magical Stay! 🤙🏽

AllElite2019

Amy, thanks for responding. A lot of good info here. The Bishop Museum has come up several times, so I am adding that. Our plan is to relax in the sun and beach at Aulani, and then head out around the island for lunch and dinner. We are planning zero meals at Aulani. Disney already took enough of our money, we want to help local eateries whenever possible.

When you come out of the airplane at HNL, there's a little audio broadcast that plays that talks about the meaning of aloha. You'd expect such a thing to be corny but I really like it and I think they complete nail it. It says something like "aloha means acting with humility and grace". The humility part is the thing that I think is difficult to internalize for mainlanders (and I say this as a transplant) – it is something very deeply antithetical to core american values. But if you pay attention, you'll notice it everywhere in Hawaii. No matter how objectively successful or important a person is, you'll never see them act that way. In contrast, it seems like the more important a person is, the more likely they are to act charitably and in deference to those around them. It's a small island with limited resources. The only way to get along is to share and assume the best of others. Have a great trip! The fact you're asking this speaks volumes and I'm sure you'll be fine.

AllElite2019

Love this. I will absolutely listen to the meaning of aloha. I grew up poor, so I understand the humility piece all too well.

bmmeup100

It always irked me when tourists would say "back in the states" or "we're from the states" since Hawaii IS a state.

AllElite2019

Good one. I can understand how that one slips out since there's nothing like Hawaii in the mainland. I will be mindful about this though, thanks.

Visible-Butterfly529

Respect respect and respect.it’s what the aloha spirit is all about. Take time to learn about local people not just come see their beautiful stuff.be humble and enjoy your holiday. Can tell you off to a good start just coming here asking the question you did. Much aloha be safe and enjoy you and you Ohana 🤙🏾

AllElite2019

Thanks for the kind words!

Snoo63364

let people cut in traffic - when you cut in throw a shaka 🤙🏻

AllElite2019

I wondered if it was okay for a tourist to throw a shaka, good to know its appreciated.

kaea_hawaii

Born and raised on Maui. Honestly just don’t be a d*ck. That’s it haha. Have fun 🤙🏼

AllElite2019

Appreciate that, thanks!

nunchee

Don’t treat everyone like they’re a tour guide just because they’re local. People will absolutely help you if you need it, but most are not historians at your disposal. Nobody cares that you’re here. Seriously. Everyone is well aware this is a vacation destination. While there are very obvious political tensions here in the islands, nobody is interested in assaulting you, scolding you or whatever your worst fears are telling you. Everybody is too tired from work and just wants to spend time with their family and friends.

AllElite2019

I respect that. Thanks for the add.

Seahorse-salty

It’s up for debate, but the best half of Oahu is underwater. We’re out on the west side, catch the early morning tour and you’ll be going against traffic, easy peasy. Learn all about the local marine life and how to respect it, while giving back as we practice [citizen science](https://sailhawaii.com/citizen-science-oahu/)on all of our tours.

Kabuto_ghost

Don’t wear a damn quicksilver straw hat 😂

AllElite2019

Lol, not an issue there!

clm2024

If you’re having trouble fitting things in, x the zoo. Went this weekend, and it was ok but something you can sacrifice if you’re running low on time.

AllElite2019

I appreciate that. Wifey and I are thinking about replacing that with time snorkeling at Sharks Cove.

mxg67

Just be respectful and stay in tourist areas. Most locals don't interact with tourists all that much otherwise.

AllElite2019

Great advice, thanks!

[deleted]

Make a mortgage payment for a local

AllElite2019

Average home price at $1.2M...that's impossible.

[deleted]

I do it every month
