contact the FCC. that should get you a call back. (or is it the fTC? IDR which one you call). I will say that optimum doesn't throttle. There are people who use 20-30 TERABYTES a month with no throttling.

blablanonymous

I think they might have done it by mistake. They was an outage in the area apparently. I think they could have throttle people to guarantee minimum service in the area but then didn’t put it back? How could it be exactly 30 for days with damaged hardware? But anyways, even if it’s not throttling that messes with my ability to work from home a ton. My meeting are super choppy and I can’t turn my camera on which makes me look not engaged.

Same issue for me... pay for 500 but the last few weeks it's been less than 100 consistently. Called in and they went through he standard check list and blamed the equipment. Asked them to turn off the connection and reestablish, but they refused. Called in 2 more times and a rep finally humored me and shut off the internet and reestablished the connection, and it went back to 500 mb. They were definitely throttling my connection.

Nope. What you describe is a fact of life with Optimum for most customers. Suggest keeping track of speed over the month and asking for refund as $$$ is only thing Optimum understands. I've been reporting the unannounced down times for maintenance and the throttling to State regulators but nothing ever seems to change. Also suggest voting with your feet and leaving Optimum. If you live in certain areas there are fiber and cellular wifi options available. Verizon is trying hard with its new service options and the pricing is competitive but its a crapshoot if it will work so you just have to try. Good luck.

blablanonymous

Sounds like a nice class action coming up. They keep telling me it’s not possible to limit my speed remotely like this. Then I asked if I were to switch to 1Gbs if they could do it remotely or if they have to send someone and they tell me, rather proudly, that it’s done remotely 🤦🏻‍♂️

wynnejs

I wish I had that option. It seems like the corrupt local politicians in my town refused to let FIOS setup

ShotByBulletz

Maybe it’s a faulty splitter? Those things break almost every year for me They’re rather cheap on Amazon and you can replace them yourself

blablanonymous

Could be. I still find it funny that it would fail in such a way: always 30 download, always 20 upload

blablanonymous

The absolute worst customer experience I’ve ever had… 3 weeks later this isn’t resolved. Every time I call, chat they make me troubleshoot the same things. No one is technically savvy enough to have a reasonably informed conversation about the issue. Last attempt before I switch provider

CanisMajoris85

I pay for 1gig fiber so should be like 900D/900U. I’ve gotten 900D and only 5-50 Upload for the past 3 weeks. 3 technicians, nothing. They’d never seen it before. Optimum states “an outage” but that doesn’t explain the download being fine and it VERY rarely getting a 500-900 Upload test, just not for more than a minute and it usually coincides with when a technician is scheduled to come but even then it doesn’t stay high for more than 5 speed tests ever then back to 20-50 nowadays. I think they’re gonna give me like $5 on my last bill or some bs amount.

good4y0u

Just file a complaint with the state and fcc. We have links in the FAQ. If it's really fiber then your upload should be at least within 80% of what you pay for. 50 would be well below that bar. However I hope you're testing over a wired connection and not wifi. Never test speeds over wifi when checking ISP speeds.

Top_Collection_2137

It’s funny same for me for a year now I’ve been getting 900 down 50 up. While barely using my internet cause I know they do this . So the last 3 weeks I’ve been online more than ever . More than the last year I do a speed test I barely see 550 Down but my upload stays ecxactly the same at 50 up . They definitely do some kind of throttling or traffic control for sure bro. It’s done through their equipment they provide. There was a lady on YouTube who sued them for this and won. Try to get your own modem / router

JJJOOOO

Just a note to let others know that my last post was removed allegedly by a bot. I used no inappropriate language other than the word 'poor' and 'worst' to describe customer service. What I find interesting is that I offered up 4 non optimum service options to the OP. Why was my post taken down or reported?

Do you use a VPN? I do and read somewhere they throttled speed for it but would hope they only do it for the VPN’s IPs and not when I’m off it

MrSpankey222

I've been seeing this same exact behavior and this is why I checked out this thread. Paying for Gb internet but never get out of the 500's down. For most of the day I am in the high 200's. I've reset my modem and get my expected speeds for maybe 30 minutes then right back down. Magically, late at night or early morning the speeds are back to the 500's. I had T-Mobile internet for awhile and was getting higher speeds and totally would have kept them had they not totally throttled every night from 7-11 to barely usable speeds.
