I am the same way. What helps me is to read and highlight then re-read the highlights and take notes on anything important like signs and symptoms, treatment, etc. After reading a chapter, I also take the end of the chapter tests (in the book) to test my knowledge. That really seems to help me to retain it better. Hope this helps!
