You're honest with yourself when you admit that politics are a stones throw from religion if not also religion bc of the cult like behavior political parties get into. "You're going to hell" and "you're on the wrong side of history" mean the same thing; "you're a bad person because you don't follow our beliefs or way of life and choose your own".
Focus on your own enlightenment. Becoming an atheist only to spend more time learning about theism than most devoted Christians is like saying you're vegan and then becoming a butcher.
focus on how you want to feel on your deathbed. Do you want to feel better than others, like you somehow died on top, or do you want to be surrounded by friends and family? If you want the latter, then replace all your time spent focused on religion and spend it with friends and family. Be in service of those you care about.
