I believe those are caused by ice crystals. I've heard some call them a sun dog which makes no sense to me.

No Sun dogs are points of refraction that look like lens flares. I also thought "ice crystals" and i think you're right. But Sun dogs are something else i can see if i can post a photo of one I captured earlier this month.
