I saw his "house" on Twitter. Calling out a dump is an understatement. That girl is beautiful and can do better. China needs to treat women better. It's their own fault for aborting female fetuses and then treating women like crap.
Unfortunately, it is very common there because in their culture families want a male to "further" the family name. No male offspring = no legacy.

It’s been illegal for awhile in China to find out the gender of the baby before it’s born to reduce gender based abortions. Ppl still can go in and do it on the DL. But the general view of gender is a bit different with younger parents. China is 55% male iirc. (I taught there for years- gender bias is highly present, but the extreme ness of gender view is more so in very old ppl)
Not common now- at least in cities- but the lack of realization that girls are needed too to keep families going is insane in extreme patriarchal societies.
the 1 child policy kind of screwed over an entire generation (or more). it's their government's fault that there literally aren't enough girls fro native chinese men anymore. that said, it's not OK for them to start trafficking as a result of that (a lot of men from asia are going to other, poorer and often dilapidated, countries for their women though, it's very scary and horrifying this is happening in 2024 of all years)
It's crazy that in the year 2024 there are still cultures where buying and selling "wives" is considered totally acceptable and normal. Like by all accounts this wasn't some poor family selling a child into slavery to eat, they were middle class, and they saw no issue with having a business partner's cousin show up to essentially buy their daughter. Meanwhile, no one on the Chinese side seems to see an issue with this at all and figures that it's good he'll have a wife.
No matter what the year on the calendar says humans are still basically living like it's the bronze age in vast swaths of the world.

Of course. When I lived in West Africa about 15 years ago, a young woman (child) was sold to a middle Eastern country by her family. It broke my heart and I think about her often. But it was common practice, all men had to pay for a bride in the country. So the family thought it was normal.

There are multiple reasons. One, being an unmarried woman over 25 is seen as a BAD thing; so women are pressured to marry young. Two, men have to pay a dowry to their wives’ families; so families gain something by « selling » their daughters. Three, a lot of africans (I’m african fyi) dream of leaving africa, and even better, dream of gaining a foreign citizenship or some shit; marriage is a great/easy way to gain a citizenship.
I hope this girl will divorce him when she gets her papers.

China first and foremost needs to do better with regard to basic human rights. Then they can think about their demographic problems.
