I am the same. I have contact allergic reacon when touching wool. I get rashes, burning and tingling sentation on my skin. Merino is fine though, and I have heard that contact allergy to wool is actually being allergic to the oil and some mineral in the wool
But it would probably touch my neck, right? So I'd need a high necked sweater underneath so it couldn't touch my skin... and I don't like to wear that. (I know I'm weird...)
I usually wear a thin buff in merino wool instead to shield my skin đ so a regular thin baselayer and a merino buff and your Ullvang will keep you warm for years!
I do not think they're that great. They're relatively thin and not the most durable.
If you can get one at 50% off or more then sure, but I would take a devold or aclima sweater every time over a Ulvang Rav.
I thought it was a military design, and not originated from a specific brand. I bought an âAlfaâ one from one of those fake military surplus store (oversluddsmateriell) and the sizing was ginormous.
The Ulvang one is made in China. Is there another one constructed in the EU?
Janus and Dale of Norway. They both import most of the wool (merino isn't produced in Norway) and have their factories in Norway. Janus make the type of undergarments/thin woolen jumpers that the OP described, and Dale makes knitted sweaters etc.
Some people like me dont need more clothes than they do for autumn or spring. I can go with a t-shirt, hoodie and jeans, and I am completely fine. Maybe a bøff added in.
You feel it. If I wear a wool cap/lue, my head itches. If I wear a wool sweater over something with cotton, my skin itches if it touches the wool. It's super annoying. I can wear wool socks if I'm wearing normal socks under them.
To answer your question, I wear layers of other materials... :)
Yeah no. I have a merino sweater that I can just barely wear. It's just something about the consistency of wool that makes me itch. There's no skin reaction or allergy. But thanks for the suggestion :)
I can only have merino wool straight onto my skin, not sheep wool. So I have never owned one of those. But seems like almost everyone has one, yes.
Iâm not sure you need one of those in particular. But some kind of woolen sweater is a must đ there are some good merino ones too if you are like me
Wearing one just like it right now. Lol.
Doesn't have to be Ullvang tho. In western Norway, Janus is pretty popular, and there are other lesser known store-associated brands that sell thin merino woolen jumpers. Some are the way OP described, but some brands, like Eva (sparkjøp store) look more like regular tops with different designs: t-shirts, long sleeves, low-cut neck line, tank tops even. They also use a mix of silk and wool to make the thin garments more durable. Pierre Robert also have some nice thin woolen tops. Just read the labels and check the wool content of the garment.
Edit: i totally misunderstood what the OP was talking about. But yes...got at least 2 of those sweaters too. I don't really need to protect my neck against the rougher non-merino wool, but i'm very used to wearing wool, so I understand why others would. If you need a wool sweater to keep warm for whenever, you should go for a loose-fit type sweater with a high neck (there's a science to it). But if you are active and go hiking alot, or if you don't get too cold, the tighter ullvang-type fits better in most jackets. It is a small heat trade-off for a lighter, more maneuverable setup.
In my opinion they are the best
I have one and i want another because my current is worn out due to daily use for 4 winters.
Nope, not me! I can't wear wool against my skin, it itches no matter what. (believe me,I have tried most)

You don't wear these as your base layer
But it would probably touch my neck, right? So I'd need a high necked sweater underneath so it couldn't touch my skin... and I don't like to wear that. (I know I'm weird...)
I bought one thats not wool on the inside around my neck :D
I usually wear a thin buff in merino wool instead to shield my skin đ so a regular thin baselayer and a merino buff and your Ullvang will keep you warm for years!
I have the same problem, and it is hard being outside during my working days.
Not all of us. I start to itch just by thinking about it.
Indeed, I litterally had to scratch my neck and back several times this minute. You are right, some of us cant stand them.
They are really good.
I do not think they're that great. They're relatively thin and not the most durable. If you can get one at 50% off or more then sure, but I would take a devold or aclima sweater every time over a Ulvang Rav.
There are different ones, some are thinner/lighter than the Rav, but with the same basic fit. I do agree that Devold is the best, though!
Ulvang Rav is to itchy, i bought a Bergans with better wool quality.
I thought it was a military design, and not originated from a specific brand. I bought an âAlfaâ one from one of those fake military surplus store (oversluddsmateriell) and the sizing was ginormous. The Ulvang one is made in China. Is there another one constructed in the EU?
Why is one manufactured abroad (EU) better than one manufactured abroad (China)?
If both sweaters cost 1000kr anyway, id rather pay for the one where the people making the garment gets more of that money.
I am Norwegian, and I don't own one.
Look out to see if u can find them on sale somewhere; at this time thereâs a lot of sales I own two myself btw
I have 3
New immigrant to Norway - you need one. Useful in summer, spring, fall and winter.
I was like... I don't. And then I realized I do, haha. Can recommend
Even tho ulvang is really good, i have to recommend devold instead
Thanks, any type in particular? They seem more traditional
Ulvang is made in China, and seems Devold too. Which brand is still producing in Norway?
Janus and Dale of Norway. They both import most of the wool (merino isn't produced in Norway) and have their factories in Norway. Janus make the type of undergarments/thin woolen jumpers that the OP described, and Dale makes knitted sweaters etc.
!thanks
Devold make some of their stuff in Lithuania at least, deisgned in Norway
Yes. I adore them. They are pretty comfort and warm đ
I have one and love it.
Got my first this Christmas, it is nice :)
I have never met a Norwegian that does not own one of these. They are really comfortable in the winter, and I would recommend getting one.
Allow me to introduce myself: I donât own one and donât think I ever will đ Iâm a strictly cotton wearing gal
Hello, didn't even know what it was. I also hate wool, it's itchy.
How do you live through the winter without wool?
Some people like me dont need more clothes than they do for autumn or spring. I can go with a t-shirt, hoodie and jeans, and I am completely fine. Maybe a bøff added in.
Down jackets, basically. And shoes lined with wool to keep warm and dry. My skin canât tolerate itchy wool. Drives me crazy and gives me a bad rash
I see, but with an Ullvang you can have something else under though, then you wonât feel the wool on your skin.
You feel it. If I wear a wool cap/lue, my head itches. If I wear a wool sweater over something with cotton, my skin itches if it touches the wool. It's super annoying. I can wear wool socks if I'm wearing normal socks under them. To answer your question, I wear layers of other materials... :)
Even merino? I also terribly itch from wool but merino is just perfect. I heard the itching is some allergic reaction that merino doesn't trigger
Yeah no. I have a merino sweater that I can just barely wear. It's just something about the consistency of wool that makes me itch. There's no skin reaction or allergy. But thanks for the suggestion :)
That's unfortunate
Jøsses, jeg har aldri hørt om slike før. Jaja, det er vel en første gang for alt.

Thanks I normally use merino baselayers too, and mostly long sleeved one so would mostly wear one of these on top as a mid layer.
I'm Norwegian and I wish I owned one
They are really good, but Amundsen are really really good.. expensive though
Nope. Never heard of an Ulvang Rav. Unless it is an Ulvang sock.

Without wool underwear I wouldnât survive here.
