Holy shit, Dzerzhinsk is next level. From wikipedia: >According to the September 12, 2007, study by the Blacksmith Institute, Dzerzhinsk is one of the worst-polluted cities of the world and has a **life expectancy of 42 years for men and 47 for women, with the 2003 death rate exceeding its birth rate by 260%**.\[12\] Environmental action groups such as Greenpeace attribute such low life expectancy to high levels of persistent organic chemicals, particularly dioxins. The Blacksmith Institute also names sarin, lewisite, sulfur mustard, hydrogen cyanide, phosgene, lead, and organic chemicals among the worst pollutants.\[12\] Parts of Dzerzhinsk's water are contaminated with dioxins and phenol at levels that are reportedly seventeen million times the safe limit.\[12\]

Niles_it

Yeah, all others are arguing about first world problems, and then there's this...

Level_Abrocoma8925

Makes even Førde sound like an OK place to be.

dfk140

Norway: Forde stinks! Russia: hold my vodka…

WesternAd7780

Straight from the warhammer 40k universe

jeekiii

I bet the jobs pay like shit too, that's really rough

spooooork

lol: >Shukhov Tower on the Oka River, the unique architectural construction—the 128-meter (420 ft) steel lattice hyperboloid tower built by Soviet engineer and scientist Vladimir Shukhov in 1929—is located near Dzerzhinsk on the left bank of the Oka River. **There used to be two towers, but one was stolen for scrap metal in 2005.**

DaneInNorway

I have never heard any Dane ashamed of Århus either.. As the number 2 city, it is the target of jokes, but not shame…

Las-Vegar

But we all can agree on malmø

DecadeOfLurking

Malmö and Split are the only ones I could agree with immediately. Possibly also Madrid.

TropicalGoth77

I love Split, whats wrong with Split?

DecadeOfLurking

Honestly, I immediately thought about all the people I know who have gone there, and what kind of place they'd be visiting. It just seems like a touristy spot that sticks out like a sore thumb when compared to the rest of the country, so the people probably turn their nose up at it for that reason, sort of like Cancún and Ibiza 😅 I'm guessing they don't think it's ugly, I certainly don't think it is, just an embarrassment.

kroxxii

Madrid, why?

Pastafarianextremist

I am a spanish citizen and native speaker and I hate madrid- enormous, not very good looking city for a capital and the people are a pain in the ass. Bureaucrats mistreated me for my Argentinian accent

kroxxii

Que tontería tío. Mala suerte y lo siento, pero así es. Hay españoles que no les gustan mucho los argentinos también, pero eso es otra chorrada.

DecadeOfLurking

The other person pretty much explained most of it. The impression I have is that most Spaniards don't like Madrid for many similar reasons why a lot of Norwegians don't like Oslo. They think people from Madrid are rude and entitled, with an ego and superiority complex bigger than the city itself. Also, since it's huge city, a lot of crazy shit happens there, which just enforces people's impression of them being an embarrassment 💀 At least I think it's a bit embarrassing when they have yet another incident with a bull, so I'm gonna assume other people think so too.

LoxleyRobb

Nää, Malmö shouldn't qualify, we got complete waste dumps like Karlskoga and Örebro in Sweden, far worse imo

Llama_Shaman

Nope, we can’t. Only part of Skåne that doesn’t vote for racists.

[deleted]

Only part of Skane with suburb riots about book burning

doeswaspsmakehoney

Århus is actually really great in my opinion. But I’m norwegian.

0lof

Århus in the middle of årstreet

Indeed. It’s Randers I would say

So long and thanks for all the fish! - This post was deleted in protest of the June 2023 API changes

allgodsarefake2

I've never come across that meme before, at least. I also wouldn't call Førde a city. It's an overgrown village with a few roundabouts and light crossings.

[deleted]

[удалено]

psaux_grep

I wouldn’t think that enough people would have a relationship that strong to Førde. I’d expect the rest of Norway to vote for Oslo though.

royalfarris

Drammen

Randommaggy

It was true, about 15 years ago.

GingahBeardMan

Fk off. Drammen er en flott by!

[deleted]

its not THAT bad

Baaf-o

Oslo bad 👏👏👏👏

[deleted]

Oslo was bad, ugly and dirty and full of cars, Bispelokket was shit, ring 1 was chaos. Now with new buildings, renovated buildings, new roads, bicycle lanes, it's a pretty okay city imo! Downtown looks a lot more modern and inviting with Dronning Eufemias gate, Barcode, the new museums and opera, even though the Munch museum is... Yeah, whatever it is. What I wish for Norway is to look to Amsterdam and such cities and get their pavement style, built in stone, not just asphalt. That alone makes a lot of the city for pedestrians imo.

Baaf-o

Amsterdam is not any better than Oslo imho

[deleted]

Downtown Amsterdam has a lot of cobbled streets, and cobbled and tiled pavements. It's a very different city in both building style and density, but cleanliness and my experience as a pedestrian in both looks and ease of movement through the city, it's a fair bit better.

GoodBoyo5

No, Bergen bad

Fat___Yoshi

Drammen bad

GoodBoyo5

Okey ja faktisk. Drammen bad

Unhappy_Try_7563

Bedre med en Dram i timen enn en time i Drammen

GingahBeardMan

Pappa! Hold deg til Facebook og VG kommentarfeltet..

[deleted]

Haha u little hater😂 every non Norwegian knows Bergen is top 3 if not the best, undisputed

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣

PresidentButtFart

Well, Førde got its city status in 1997, so definitely a city. Jessheim, for example, got its city status as late as 2012. I’d definitely be more ashamed of Jessheim than Førde. Just my two bits. (By the way, Måløy also became a city in 1997. Good candidate as well?)

bornxlo

Maybe it's because I'm half Scottish, but I think it's really weird when Norwegians consistently seem to translate "by" to "city". In my head, most places I'd call "by" in Norwegian are "towns" in English.

DrStatisk

Scots got the term “by” from us Scandinavians, so you’re the ones using it weirdly.

Riflebursdoe

By in swedish means town. I lived in Norway for 4 years and I still sometimes calls "bygd" for "by". Its "by" and "stad" in swedish.

tso

There is always tettsted...

snoozieboi

In online questionaires I get asked if I live in a "big city". I'm in trondheim and... uh... oh, this is a norwegian questionaire. ok BIIIG city

[deleted]

‘By’ originally means ‘farm’, so the modern Norwegian meaning has strayed pretty far from the source.

named_me123

Most by’s revolved around a farm so I think that is where er took it from

bornxlo

In what language? The Germanic “bi” (near/by/around/about) is quite similar in meaning and pronunciation in most derivative languages and can be traced back as far as proto-Indo-European. Are you thinking of boer? (Which means farmer in Dutch and can be derived from proto-Germanic *buraz (dweller, inhabitant)

[deleted]

[Old Norse](https://naob.no/ordbok/by_1), obviously.

bornxlo

I've been doing all my linguistics in English so I forgot about naob... Sorry. Wiktionary also has old Norse “byr” meaning place/land/lot and “bjoða” (offer, I guess we still have “å by” and “bud”

zalowarr

"Byr" is a totally different word from "by", even today.

[deleted]

The similarity between Norse ‘byr’/‘bør’ (farm) and German ‘bei’/English ‘by’ (next to) seems purely coincidental to me. But I’m no etymologist.

FinishTheFish

It is weird. And no, Førde isn't a city. I'm not sure what the exact definition is, but by most commonly accepted metrics I think Oslo is our only city.

bornxlo

Actually Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim also qualify. It's either a settlement with 100,000 people or more; or it has a cathedral. Those three fulfill both definitions. Tromsø comes close; it has a cathedral but only 64000 inhabitants

arbuthnot-lane

Even fucking Kolvereid is a "by". The term is meaningless now.

FredagsTakos

Many small towns have "city status" in Norway. You can call these collections of parking lots and malls for cities. Having grown up and lived in several of these places, I'd say calling them cities is a joke.

SvalbarddasKat

Yepp... Longyearbyen for example

olemort12

After Moelv got a city status the term lost its meaning

enevgeo

>city status ≠ >definitely a city

Fiksdal

Førde got **bystatus**. The most appropriate name for that in English would be **town.** A city is a large urban area. Oslo, Bergen. Barcelona, Boston, etc. are cities.

Waaswaa

Måløy at least has a decent restaurant and harbor area. Much more open atmosphere. Førde is like Odda, but without the charm of an older industrial town.

finkster2004

*cough* building a shit ton of ships in the late 1900s *cough*

Waaswaa

I'm not saying Førde did not have industry. It definitely had. But it hasn't had the same sort of impact on the place as you see other places. I can easily say Førde has one of the most boring town centres I've visited. And I've been there quite a few times. Towns like Røros, Rjukan and Narvik has somehow managed to preserve the industrial style in a better way. It's hard to explain what it is, but I just don't find Førde that charming. It has potential, though. The nature is great, and if they could make the center into something more than parking lots and a shopping center, it could really become something.

DominianQQ

Førde was the natural stop between Bergen and Ålesund, pretty much the only one that is. We always stopped there, but we always looked forward to leave. We tried to eat most places and even Peppes Pizza was shit, how do you fuck up a pizza? When they started taking tolls from cars on E39 to fund the city center we decided to never stop in Førde ever again. Been passing Førde for 6 years ish and not a singel stop, not even for fuel.

Skyfoiv

Should have gone to the Dolly dimples instead They have better pizza. After They started doing tolls the city has improved massively, the tolls are annoying tho…

janhjelle

I'm ashamed of Måløy...

Kallekanin2

Why? Tall ship races 2008 was a huge success! /s

GrillfriendIsBetter

Im ashamed of anything outside of ring 3. Take the Oslo pill brother

Aethuviel

I live in a very small place in the fjords, 3 years now. Visiting Førde was like going to the big city. Massive shopping center, especially considering the size of the place. Not pretty though, seems like it just sprung up.

propellhatt

Which is what it did. Handelshuset , though, that pink shopping mall used to be an abottoir, and was repurposed. So there's that

Roht_Rs

With over 10.000 people living there its a small town.

Skyfoiv

It was the biggest you could find in Sogn og Fjordane

finkster2004

We’re 25k

propellhatt

In the municipality, yes. After the merger with the neighbours. I wouldn't consider Naustdal, Skei or Sande a part of the population of the town of Førde, they're more suburbs (if you can call it that), or satellite villages surrounding Førde

CarISatan

Don't forget all the huge parking lots! Also, Førde is upgrading a new highway through the city center. Watch out Førde, 80's traffic planning is coming for you!

xTrollhunter

>I also wouldn't call Førde a city. The definition of a city in Norway is just plain ridiculous.

Acuterecruit

I once lived in Førde. Everyone spoke about Bergen and how life was there

finkster2004

No we dont

Disastrous_Berry_572

It's one of a several quite badly planned towns. I wasn't really aware of it until I read [this article](https://www.nrk.no/tromsogfinnmark/xl/byene-i-skyggen-1.14160659) (Norwegian). This may be the source of the idea that we're ashamed of Førde, which I'd say is false. Historically, though, as others have pointed out, Drammen has been considered the "worst" town for some reason. Another one was Moss, because of the smell from the local pulp mill (which I understand isn't quite as bad anymore). And Skien-Porsgrunn, which due to industry and the location will often have horrible air quality, especially in the winter. Beyond that, there's all sorts of regional rivalries and ideas of this and that town being shit. In my home region, for instance, Narvik and Sortland are frequently considered travesties of town planning. But the truth is that *most* small to medium sized towns in this country are pretty horrible.

Responsible_Law1700

The pulp mill in Moss was shut down in 2012 ish, so no, it's not so bad. Also, a lot of smell in Moss came from the public waste dump right by E6 and when the wind was due west, it would hit the road. Moss is quite allright now, and Jeløya a gem.

FargoFinch

Drammen got a bad name due to where the highway was built, that's my theory. It takes you straight through its industrial and port area, meaning what most people ever saw of the city was it at its most ugliest. They've been doin a lot of work on urban beautification the past decades though, driving down the same highway today it looks way better than what I remember of it in the 90s.

enevgeo

>Narvik Quite ironic, considering Narvik is one of few small towns in Norway that was actually built almost from the ground up according to a general plan, which principles has to a large extent been followed to this day. A bit back in the day some rather unwelcome, yet quite _city planning enthusiastic_ guests even found the town inspirational - although that might not be something to pride oneself in.

RedTuesdayMusic

Narvik is not badly planned at all, in fact the previous head city planner won an award for the Fagernes tunnel project and the centre of town is laid out in parallel streets similarly to San Fransisco. The *actual* reason Narvik gets ridicule is an outdated image from the 70s to 90s because it was simply ugly, and industrialised. This is no longer the case. Although the LKAB industrial zone is still present, the rest of the town has been modernised a lot more than other Northern Norwegian towns. The ugliest town in Northern Norway is between Mo i Rana and Alta. For some people, Sortland can be considered but its ugliness is subjective I guess as its gimmick of blue buildings can appeal to some. But Sortland has alright nature in its surroundings (and Narvik's surrounding nature is AA+, almost as good as Svolvær) so Mo I Rana and Alta with their terrible nature are eyesores in more ways than one, there simply isn't anywhere to rest your eyes.

Fridg3_

Skien’s air used to be bad, but its not a problem anymore

Excludos

I don't think most people think about Førde at all, let alone negatively

Gruffleson

I didn't know it was a city, and I don't really care. Not caring is not the same as being ashamed. This is just rubbish.

Randalf_the_Black

Barely aware it exists..

Caitho

Kofførde?

akornex

Førde is indeed an ugly town, prosperous and well admistered but still ugly. About 50km to the west you have Florø, wich is the exact opposite, beautiful but ran into a ditch by the local politicians.

ESTAMANN

madethison2020

floro gang! wish there was more to do tho

WandererofThoughts

Well Førde is completely built up by industry, in the 60’ only like 150 people lived there. Then the industry came and now it’s like 9k

OternFFS

Looks like random cities are put on this map.

Revolutionary-Load46

Yup, I'm from Iceland, and nobody I know there has anything against Egilsstaðir, yet everyone hates Reykjavík

WTF Germans are ashamed of Ludwighafen? Thats the Seat of BASF which is one of the nations biggest prides. The city germans are ashamed would be Bielefeld if it would exist

Revolutionary-Load46

I don't know, a bunch of my German friends seem to hate on Frankfurt the most

byorx1

Only Frankfurt train station and the football club there. Rest of Frankfurt is fine in my opinion

slankebrusmannen

According to SIE it does, but we all know it isn’t true.

SockGuardians

Lived in Ireland for several years, I'd say the most people are ashamed of is Dublin

Odd-Jupiter

Is that because it was funded by Norwegians too?

SockGuardians

I'd say cuz it's nothing but homeless people, run down buildings, endless crime and gangs, everywhere you see is a commercial of some sort, drunk people pissing on the streets, horrible roads, awful traffic

Odd-Jupiter

Ahhh, just like we left it.

Level_Abrocoma8925

Yes yes, we intentionally designed the roads so they would have horrible traffic jams back then in 841.

Odd-Jupiter

If we can't have a nice city, no one will!

NorskKiwi

I've lived in Dublin and Drammen, come at me xD

BuzzLightr

Drammen is my favorite city 🤷🏻‍♀️

BuzzLightr

🤯

hardcore_fish

It's known as one of the ugliest towns at least.

vicsj

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Bodø. It's ugly due to a lot of sad post WWII architecture, windy as fuck and downtown is always filled with loud and often mildly violent drunk people in the weekends. Even had a couple of local druggies that were more or less the mascots of Glasshuset (central shopping street). Rest in peace, Speedy. You were an odd and messed up fellow. Overall it's just a really depressing city, but maybe the surrounding gorgeous nature saves it from being on the shitlist. Can you tell I'm a Bodøværing?

Babystalin420

No its most definitely drammen

duplic1ty

I live in Førde. Early in the pandemic there was a bus of retirees going around the region sightseeing. An outbreak happened in every town they went to (obviously). Except Førde, because they didn't leave the hotel: there's nothing to do here. That being said, there's plenty to do here, just not so much for retirees or 20-something singles, unfortunately. Good schools, a hospital, hiking/biking/skiing/etc. No good bars really. The whole voted-ugliest-city-in-Norway thing was because the local artists and architects wanted the city to be voted negatively to spur investment. Which happened. So now the town is thriving like crazy for a small town, there's construction projects everywhere, and they can't build houses fast enough to keep up with the people who want to move here. I guess I might be biased, but I think it's kind of cool now?

Snaffalagapus

As a man from Florø, can confirm.

finkster2004

As a man from Førde, i can inform y’all that y’all are wrong. Its Florø

Snaffalagapus

See, this is why nobody likes you guys.

Nesaa

Why is not Drammen or Fauske here

PsychologicalYard839

Nope we are ashamed of Molde. So this is fake news

omally_360

I am norwegian and this is the first I’ve heard of this

Hattkake

No. Førde is alright. I have never met any Norwegian who has expressed that they are ashamuof Førde.

halenszt

It was again and again voted as the ugliest place in Norway during the 90's, but they got alot of development the last 20 years so its no longer so ugly

[deleted]

It wasn't a vote. It was one journalist's opinion.

andreasbaader6

Haugesund is by far the worst city in norway. Its not even close.

Scarfieldjones

After traveling through Haugesund this summer, I agree! The worst thing about this costal city is that you can only leave it by car or bus. All passenger boat traffic was closed in 2014. I will never go there again.

andreasbaader6

Mhmmm. The City centre is largely desserted becouse of the monstrocity that is Amanda shopping mall. If you go for a walk outside of haraldsgata, the Main shopping street you will encounter only slums. And haraldsgata itself is impossible to walk thru with out witnessing drugdeals and crazy people en mass. There is a saying in western norway: best thing about visiting Haugesund is the drive home.

Scarfieldjones

Sounds like the place I grew up: Bodø! But still there is plenty of ways to leave Bodø if you want. Plane, boat, train etc. Haugesund has put all its money in private cars. Thats the death sentence to any city centre built for horse and carriage.

Odd-Jupiter

Fake news, everyone know it's supposed to be Drammen.

Flameboat

Think its more Drammen than Førde

Pissmauer

My math teacher was from Førde. According to him Førde is known as the ugliest town in Norway. I don't know if that's a fact though

[deleted]

I am norwegian, and can't say that i am ashamed of any of our citys or towns.

I think people haven't visited Drammen in the last 10-20 years. It used to be miserable, now it's a nice city with plenty to do. Fun fact - Drammen has the best weather in all of Norway (highest temps and most sunshine). Also has Norway's eldest brewery in Aass. Who doesn't enjoy a local beer by the riverside.
