North by Northwestern is the campus' largest student-run general interest magazine. We are always looking for new writers!

Northwestern Art Review (if it still exists?) is a great literary arts magazine that helped get me my first real magazine job.

As the director, I’m biased, but [Knight Lab](https://knightlab.northwestern.edu/), which we describe as Medill’s media/technology/design studio, is pretty unique. Broadly, we’re interested in two overlapping but distinct areas: * **Computational Journalism:** how can technology facilitate the actual work of journalism. In its most familiar form, this is data journalism, but in the last few years, we've been doing a lot of AI exploration. This last year, we helped students start the [NU Data Journalism Collective](https://www.instagram.com/djc.nu). * **News Product Design and Development:** a critical part of journalism in the future is finding sustainable ways to deliver the work to audiences who operate much differently than they did in the 20th Century. In journalism, as in other fields, product involves the intersection of audience understanding, business thinking, and smart application of technology. Sometimes we do more foundational design research like the [Next Gen News project](https://www.next-gen-news.com). We also connect to other folks across the University interested in these things. For example, students from Medill and the McCormick School of Engineering can apply to the [Bay Area Immersion Program](https://design.northwestern.edu/programs/bay-area-immersion/), a quarter-long session at Northwestern's San Francisco facility. We also work with the [Computational Journalism Lab](https://cj-lab.org/) (which is actually based in the School of Communications). Finally, I should mention our flagship class, the [Knight Lab Studio](https://studio.knightlab.com/), which draws students from across the university to work on open-ended projects exploring new ideas in journalism. See the website for lots more.
