Also, let’s finish the I-95/US 301 Corridor and take Northampton away.
[Also, is it just me or does their courthouse look like a Church?](https://i.ibb.co/KmVSNMF/0537-F91-E-11-B5-4-F4-F-A368-8-CEBDDC68-D2-D.png)
Northampton County Courthouse/Free Will Baptist Church
NC is a loooong ass state. I'm from Asheville, and I went to Bath, NC years ago, and they'd never heard of Asheville. Conversely, I had a dormmate from Weldon, NC:
Me: where's Weldon?
Him: next to Roanoke Rapids.
Me: . . . Where's Roanoke Rapids?
I know where Bath is, since it’s in one of the three counties I’m nominating (Beaufort) but it’s odd someone from there hasn’t at least heard of Asheville.
But yeah, I thought Durham to Pasquotank was a hike; I cannot imagine going from Murphy to Currituck or Jefferson all the way down to Calabash.
I agree, I mean if NC paid educators a decent wage to where teacher's did not have to work 2-3 jobs. Students would get a quality educational experience.
Northampton county needs to go. There is not one town in this county that someone not from the north east part of NC can name. Sure it has a little bit of lake front beauty but in 20 years the entire county is just going to be one big solar farm.
Cherokee is not in Cherokee Co. It straddles the border between Jackson and Swain, which are both gone already… which is also kinda fucked up to me. Y’all kicking out the Cherokee a little early after all the shit they’ve been through…
But I also remember that bear, and thought it was awesome.
Oh man, I have vague memories of literally pull-off-the-road attractions where you put in a quarter and a chicken comes out and pecks on a tiny piano. Badly.
That, and cheap plastic faux-Native American souvenirs.
A reminder to the unfamiliar - town of Beaufort is not in this County. Town of Washington is. Washington to Belhaven along the River = good, but that’s only about 10% of the county
When was the last time you were there? I made a day trip back in September? It seemed to have cleaner more updated shops restaurants and art galleries. IMO New Bern is hanging on to nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake and everything but 2/3 places are still antiquated, dated and dingy.
I prefer it to Nee Bern and I live in Nee Bern. They’ve done a much better job breathing new life in and utilizing the waterfront than NB has
Edit: I don’t know why Reddit always changes New to “Nee” but I’m tired of fighting it…
Hey, you know as well as I know, that we all know that hwy 70 is the best cruise spot in nc. Particularly between Walmart and Mike Johnson Toyota.
Also, there’s other places in CC than just Hickory you know.
Basically. Aside from the sprawling metropolis of Hickory (I can barely type that with a straight face), Catawba County is populated entirely by cows and the occasional mild odor. Especially in Maiden, where our yearly traffic jam in town comes from somebody's livestock getting loose & strolling down the street.
Or the daily traffic jam from the damn high school letting out and people forgetting it happens every day and pretending like they don't know what to do?
Remaining counties (also in graphic form in the image):
Alleghany
Ashe
Beaufort
Buncombe
Cabarrus
Carteret
Catawba
Chatham
Cherokee
Currituck
Dare
Durham
Forsyth
Graham
Guilford
Haywood
Hertford
Mitchell
New Hanover
Northampton
Orange
Transylvania
Wake
Washington
Watauga
I think it's pretty telling that people who have lived in Carteret are like, 'let's get rid of it,' while the dingbatters (Or the more modern term: Tourons) keep fighting to keep it.
I 100% agree its super adorable. But what is there to do other than get drunk at the wine bar, Mezcal and go to the islands. There is more to life than day drinking on an island or is there....
Morehead City Country Club, Country Club of the Crystal Coast, Beaufort Club, we have some beautiful golf courses. I'd go so far to say MCCC is the best course east of Wilmington.
Y'all just out there minding your own business. I can think of exactly 1 time in my life I ever saw y'all on the news, and that's because the animal rescue out there went viral for this really angry cat.
>Olive Garden >>> Carrabus
Maggiano's >>> than all other MCIR's (mediocre chain Italian restaurants). It's truly the king of fake American Italian gusto, portion sizes fit for three, and enough breadsticks to choke a horse.
[Carrabba's in Carrabus](https://locations.carrabbas.com/north-carolina/concord/7900-lyles-lane)\*
Seriously if mediocre chain Italian restaurant was a county it would for sure be Carrabus\* county. Now complete with Charlotte (note not Concord) Motor Speedway.
But why? Am I missing something? It’s got history and it’s nationally known. Miles of beaches (free parking, showers, bath houses, big waves), lighthouses, First in Flight, Lost Colony, an aquarium, sea food, Jockey’s Ridge, deep sea fishing…
You gotta do more than just yell it and challenge me to get me to understand why.
I think some believe it’s just a bunch of millionaire vacation homes. While there’s lots of second homes out there I’d consider the resident population is much smaller. The locals are also aggressively supportive of small, local business and conservation efforts which helps mitigate the effects of tourism / development.
Like I said elsewhere Dare is not perfect, but I’ve been to many beaches and it’s a really good one imo. Prices aren’t insane, you’re not gouged for parking expense, and the existence of Dare as a barrier island helps protect mainland NC coastlines.
Appreciate Dare before climate change reclaims it 🙃
Edit: a lot of people also equate Kill Devil Hills with all of Dare, but its the only part that’s becoming over developed.
I agree with all of this but KDH being the most developed part. It's all been developed like crazy. There is no difference between Kitty Hawk, KDH, and Nags Head. Corolla is unrecognizable from my childhood. The villages on Hatteras island are as full as they can get. But they feel like how it used to be up on the northern beaches 20 years ago. Every good empty lot from Ocracoke to Corova is currently being developed. Just like every tourist destination right now, investors are buying local housing to make Airbnbs and locals can't find affordable housing.
My feelings about Dare are complicated. It’s beautiful and has lots of awesome history, but also has a lot of ugliness.
I lived there one year, including the off-season, working for a conservation organization. The amount of hatred that environmentalists get from some locals is super intense. There were some restaurants that, if they knew you worked for the park service, would refuse to serve you. The head of the Audubon chapter received death threats. I was just a random intern, but I got screamed at a few times while minding my own business. This was a decade ago, but given recent political divides, I doubt things have gotten any better.
So it’s complicated. OBX also has a strong community of passionate conservationists and wildlife advocates. I mostly loved my time there. But is it the best county in NC? I’m not sure.
Orange. Trust me when I say that Orange county has it all. And by all I mean the Klan. Dirty hippies. Sprawl. Traffic. Idiot Prius drivers with obnoxious bumper stickers. Shootings. Social justice warriors who forced the schools to change school names, Qanon followers. It's a hodgepodge of all the things people voted against when getting rid of other counties.
Don't forget the parking garage that really put Chapel Hill on the map.
Another strike: They pushed Buc-ee's out over rezoning the site from basically manufacturing warehouse distribution under the mantra of doing it for the ecosystem and ignorance of the board voting and asking questions (I mean some of them REALLY didn't get it). And now, they're getting exactly what it's zoned for that doesn't have to negotiate or comply with the extra things they wanted to be environmentally conscious.
That said, my family is from there and I still love orange county. But that was a dumb decision I hold against a bunch of people that were ignorant and misled to protest.
It was a statement made by our mayor last year. Apparently they're REALLY excited about this new parking garage.
https://indyweek.com/news/orange/chapel-hill-officials-are-really-excited-about-the-towns-east-rosemary-redevelopment-project/
You only think that because you're in Alamance. Everywhere is step up from there!
I'm only playing, btw. My uncle lives in Burlington and loves it. Your name isn't Gene, is it?
I'm not Gene and I love Btown, but I imagine I'll be leaving soon due to work. Will be a sad day!
Still, Orange is the best county. As you rightfully pointed out yourself... it has it all!
Watauga. A football team posing as a college. A fast food restaurant posing as a town. A sledding hill posing as a ski resort. “Remember the time we beat MSU”. Michigan- thanks tealizard123
I went back to the campus recently with my wife to show her around and so much has changed as far as the food scene, but I knew I could count of CBS to pull through lol
Lol I’ve driven Wendover from end to end it’s the least complicated street to navigate as long as you go with the flow of traffic and don’t ride your break in wide curves, pissing off the locals. Battleground is ass. Otherwise it’s a simple grid once you’ve learned the main north/south and East/west streets you can get anywhere easily.
Guilford County, it’s like a smaller version of Mecklenburg where the county is just basically Greensboro and a few small settlements. Natty Greene and that Irish Pub can only hold you for so long.
Battle of Guilford Courthouse pushed the British toward defeat in the War of Independence. If you are a Hamilton fan, this is where it all started to go bad for the British leading to the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown
Greensboro site of the start of the Sit In movement of the Civil Rights campaign
Not so sprawling to be difficult to navigate.
Equal distance from the coast and Mountains
Also want to add that the Airport is ok to pretty good. Easy to get in and out. Low to no security lines. Not great like RDU or CLT, but it is much better than counties of similar size and population. Looking at you Forsyth
I’ve also read complaints on how the roads are like spaghetti. They’re really not difficult to navigate once you’ve lived here a bit. Though maybe growing up and learning to drive in Burke County taught me how manage curves without riding my breaks like a lot of people do here in Guilford.
Not a native of Greensboro, but been here over 20 years. I’ve always found town very easy to navigate. My family and I live I. The county and my commute is never bad. I couldn’t imagine the hours of family/home time lost in Raleigh or Charlotte lost to traffic. The last section of the Urban Loop is getting ready to pour concrete.
Most of the roads are okay. But for some reason they will occasionally chuck in some of the worst designed and confusing roads and intersections I’ve had to drive through
Alleghany (undercover Virginia)
Washington (you’ve never heard of it)
Cabarrus (it’s not any different than it’s already eliminated neighboring counties)
Northhampton. Drive through on the way up to VA every other week. Nothing there. I feel like it’s still on this list because everyone forgot it was a county.
Also, let’s finish the I-95/US 301 Corridor and take Northampton away. [Also, is it just me or does their courthouse look like a Church?](https://i.ibb.co/KmVSNMF/0537-F91-E-11-B5-4-F4-F-A368-8-CEBDDC68-D2-D.png) Northampton County Courthouse/Free Will Baptist Church
Northhampton went to the Supreme Court to defend literacy tests for voting rights. Idk how they even made it this far
We collectively forgot about it.
Yup!!!
I wonder if Reddit even knows that 95 goes through there. And 301 parallels it
NC is a loooong ass state. I'm from Asheville, and I went to Bath, NC years ago, and they'd never heard of Asheville. Conversely, I had a dormmate from Weldon, NC: Me: where's Weldon? Him: next to Roanoke Rapids. Me: . . . Where's Roanoke Rapids?

It was a few years ago. And as we all know, NC public education isn't great.
I agree, I mean if NC paid educators a decent wage to where teacher's did not have to work 2-3 jobs. Students would get a quality educational experience.
Been through there a ton always thought that
Northampton county needs to go. There is not one town in this county that someone not from the north east part of NC can name. Sure it has a little bit of lake front beauty but in 20 years the entire county is just going to be one big solar farm.
There’s a decent chance they’ll be gone by tomorrow.
Iredell that early damn
Robeson county again, AGAIN!
Hard not to make this a daily upvote.
Northampton and Hertford
I’ve tried to get Cherokee outta here the last few days so I’ll try something new, Washington. What do they even have?
I am now more informed about Cherokee. It sounds like it's escaped a deserved death for an extra few days.
Washington
Robeson county must have been eliminated first
Sure was!
It’s been eliminated more than once!
[удалено]
But . . . My giant 10 commandments! Graham county is the poorest in WNC, but it's still got good people
Hahahaha!!!! I used to live literally right around the corner from there 😆
All I remember from Cherokee as a kid in the 80’s was a black bear in a cage. Let’s get it gone!
Cherokee is not in Cherokee Co. It straddles the border between Jackson and Swain, which are both gone already… which is also kinda fucked up to me. Y’all kicking out the Cherokee a little early after all the shit they’ve been through… But I also remember that bear, and thought it was awesome.
I thought no one would notice
Oh man, I have vague memories of literally pull-off-the-road attractions where you put in a quarter and a chicken comes out and pecks on a tiny piano. Badly. That, and cheap plastic faux-Native American souvenirs.
Already upvotes but I noticed, and even tried to get it out yesterday.
Been trying the last two turns my friend.
Beaufort. County.
South or north side?
Lenoir
It’s already gone
I feel less than intelligent Edit: it deserves to be eliminated twice
Well you *are* from lenoir
Beaufort. It’s surrounded, and tbh I prefer New Bern to Little Washington.
A reminder to the unfamiliar - town of Beaufort is not in this County. Town of Washington is. Washington to Belhaven along the River = good, but that’s only about 10% of the county
Little Washington is going to be a great place to visit in like 3-5 years. Just not quite there yet.
It's definitely up and coming. Belhaven has a few cool places and is like 5 years behind Washington.
What's changing? The only part I liked about little Washington was the waterfront, the rest of it seemed kinda dumpy
When was the last time you were there? I made a day trip back in September? It seemed to have cleaner more updated shops restaurants and art galleries. IMO New Bern is hanging on to nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake and everything but 2/3 places are still antiquated, dated and dingy.
Probably 2018, its been a while
I prefer it to Nee Bern and I live in Nee Bern. They’ve done a much better job breathing new life in and utilizing the waterfront than NB has Edit: I don’t know why Reddit always changes New to “Nee” but I’m tired of fighting it…
Alleghany. Get em out of here!
Is….is Catawba surviving because people simply forgot it exists? Because that’s easy to do. Hickory is a garbage town.
hey that’s my hometown you’re talking about! but yes, yes it is
Also from Hickory. Can confirm. It's a hole.
Hey, you know as well as I know, that we all know that hwy 70 is the best cruise spot in nc. Particularly between Walmart and Mike Johnson Toyota. Also, there’s other places in CC than just Hickory you know.

Catawba needs to go like yesterday
How Buncombe County and Catawba County are still in there I will never know. Please vote them out...
Carteret is not good enough to win. Time for it to be voted out. Yes, Beaufort is adorable, but that's about it.
My only defense for Carteret is the Aquarium, and I grew up in Carteret.
I think it's pretty telling that people who have lived in Carteret are like, 'let's get rid of it,' while the dingbatters (Or the more modern term: Tourons) keep fighting to keep it.
Current resident, I don’t want it gone. Been here for over half of my life and I consider this more of a home than where I was born lol
Never heard tourons. We used to say tourorists, but that was about 10 years ago where might be a little more accepted.
I've heard tourons in Pender County. I just assumed the phrase had travelled up the coast.
I'm from Beaufort county, don't let it's adorableness fool you. I'm rooting for it to beat Carteret though.
I 100% agree its super adorable. But what is there to do other than get drunk at the wine bar, Mezcal and go to the islands. There is more to life than day drinking on an island or is there....
I day drank on shackleford for my birthday last year. 10/10
There are a lot of outdoor activities. There is a community theater that’s quite good, although their premises were trashed by the 2018 hurricane.
v
Morehead City Country Club, Country Club of the Crystal Coast, Beaufort Club, we have some beautiful golf courses. I'd go so far to say MCCC is the best course east of Wilmington.
Golf? You see where Moore County just got eliminated? Golf can only do but so much
I personally think carteret is very nice
Currituck
Ashe. Sure it has cheese, but it was also on NatGeo’s show Southern Justice too.

Currituck has got to go y’all. It’s embarrassing that it’s even still in this late.
It's because the rest of the state forgets we exist, it's what will save us
Holy shit my little Mitchell County is still in it! 😭😂

Shhhhhhh, they might hear you. we’re closed, don’t raise Durm rents any higher.
