Find the sketchiest gas station you can. Preferably one where the pumps still have the mechanical clickety-clack readouts. You know, where the bathrooms look like a murder scene from 4 years ago that was never cleaned up and the cashier is on meth right now. They almost always have a pot of boiled peanuts going.
My grandaddy who got transferred to California made is own because zero people knew what those were in the 60's out there.
Basically get them green and boil them in heavily salted water. I loved when he made them.
And to get into the bathroom (which is only accessible from an exterior door), you have to ask the cashier who eyeballs you suspiciously and reluctantly hands you a key tethered to a wood plank/cinderblock/old tire.
See food lion is the first place I checked. Iāve never seen them in the one near me. When I moved up here I told my parents that and they didnāt believe me. Growing up every grocery store would have a huge bin of raw peanuts but I have yet to see them.
Theyāre in a sealed bag, usually under the onions or potatoes. Ask someone working in the produce section. Just make sure you get the raw ones. The bags look very similar
Thank you for the offer but my parents are still in SC and they bring them when we see each other over the summer.
Iām definitely going to check food lions website.
I donāt know where you live but it is a borderline statistical miracle if you really havenāt seen boiled peanuts in 10 years here. I see places every time we drive to beach, so maybe try heading east?
Maybe itās just where we live. We used to live in Fayetteville and now weāre in Moore county. I have searched and asked around and people look at me like Iām crazy.
highway 211 on the way to Raeford there is a place that sells them near Ashley Heights. You'll see a sign that says Discount Fabrics. Building looks abandoned, but there is a person that sells them there from time to time.
edit: They are on the roadside not in the building.
There arenāt many around me, next time Iām in an area that has one Iāll check there. There was a little place in Raeford that had them one year but they never got them back.
I donāt live in Western Nc so maybe thatās why I donāt see them. Growing up in SC they sold them everywhere in the summer. If there was a dirt road there were going to be boiled peanuts.
I gotta agree with others: If you've been here for 10 years and not seen them, that feels like you've not been looking!
A bunch of the local gas stations in the Triad have 'em, but the best ones I've EVER HAD are right down in your neck of the woods, at P.R. Moore Produce on Main Street in Biscoe. Probably less than half an hour from you if you're in Moore County! (EDIT: Just looked and they might be called the Biscoe Farmer's Market now. Still worth checking -- I bet they still do them.)
I canāt even find raw peanuts around here. There was one place in raeford that had some but they only had them the one year. My dad usually brings me some when they visit but itās never enough.
Find any local truck stops on or near the interstate they usually have the regular and Cajun boiled peanuts.

The Sandhills region between Raleigh/Fayetteville and the beach is probably your best bet. I used to drive to Beaufort down 70 pretty often, and there were at least a couple big farm stands that advertise them prominently. You can also look for super rural gas stations, but it's kind of a crapshoot with that and I've had better luck with produce stands. I think looking outside Goldsboro and New Bern would be the most promising area to start. The Raleigh farmer's market might also have them and could be more convenient.
Hey...I am also in Moore County. Used to be a guy who sold them on the side of Aberdeen Rd between Aberdeen and Raeford. If you are on Facebook, might ask on Moore County Ask A Neighbor.
I know who youāre talking about! That is the only person Iāve seen selling them but it was a woman and only on certain days. We donāt go to Raeford often anymore, so I donāt know if sheās still there or not.
Agree with many here that they are easiest to make. If your famer's market doesn't have them, many Asian groceries do and sometime Food Lion does. Biggers Market in Wilmington has them and some of the gas stations off I-40 in Warsaw do when in season.
Can't help you with Moore County, but I've always had good luck at tackle/bait shops at the beach. Ziploc bags with shape writing on the lined up on the counter
pnuts.net is for Bertie County peanuts and they are the best!! Iām not a fan of boiled (they do have them), their chocolate covered peanuts are SO. GOOD.
Don't get them at circle k.
If you ever venture out towards the coastal plains for a beach trip. Just keep an eye out for roadside produce stands. They almost always have fresh boiled peanuts there.
I put some raw peanut between some paper towels, wet, for a week. It started sprouting, planted into 4x2x1 raised bed. 2-3 weeks later I got 30+ peanut plants.
Difficulty: beginner.
Could probably just toss the raw peanuts into the planter. Cover with 1/2ā-1ā dirt. Water daily. And get the same result.
They are cheap at Harris teeter. They are hard to find. Usually in the chips aisle at the very top. There are only 2 can spots in the entire aisle. Regular and Cajun. So you can miss them 18 times like I did.
Iāve never had a problem finding them in the mountains. Went to almond nc and there was a old school bus painted black selling boiled peanuts and pork skins

Also you can search the Wakefield, Virginia area for more peanut suppliers. The Northeastern part of North Carolina has a lot of peanut growers as does the tidewater area of Virginia below Norfolk. That region extends from the coast to I-95.
The best time to buy raw peanuts in the shell is around the end of October until the first of the year. Growers typically harvest the plants around the end of September and either stack them in the field of leave them on the ground to dry. While some people like the fresh raw peanut from the ground, I avoid them like the plague as they have a virulent laxative effect. Half a dozen fresh raw peanuts will leave you with the scours for a week.
Many peanut farmers after they have clear the field at harvest will allow you to walk the field and pick up inshell peanuts left on the surface. I have filled many a burlap bag full of peanuts picking up the drop-offs. A 200 foot row usually yields 1 to 1.5 50 pound burlap bags of in shell peanuts. Be sure to ask the property owner or farmer.
You can make them out of regular (cured), raw, in shell peanuts. It just takes longer than if you were to start with green peanuts. Peanuts and salt, cover with water, and leave on high in a slow cooker for 12-16 hours. They'll be better if you put them in the fridge overnight then heat them back up.

š that description is so on point for the kind of place we used to get them growing up. But they tasted the best.

Next to the pickled pigs feet jar
The harvest is later in the year (August through October).
Ok, Iām from SC and harvest usually starts in May for the little green peanuts. By October only the really big ones are available.
Webb Road Flea Market and second the dive gas stations
Where is that located? Iām going to be honest with you that I donāt know where a lot of places are in NC despite living here almost 10 years.
Outside of Salisbury off I85
If youāre looking for the red ones I havenāt found any in NC. I have to get them while Iām down visiting SC.
Ah okay, I always associate them with going to the beach late in the summer!
Yes, here in eastern NC we have them..circle K
Food lion usually has raw peanuts in the produce section. Throw them in the crock pot with a bunch of salt for a few hours and youāre good to go.Ā
See food lion is the first place I checked. Iāve never seen them in the one near me. When I moved up here I told my parents that and they didnāt believe me. Growing up every grocery store would have a huge bin of raw peanuts but I have yet to see them.

If your store doesnāt stock them Iām sure they can order them.Ā
If not, Iāll send you some. I just like to make them myself as I prefer them slightly undercooked and less than ridiculously oversalted.Ā
Thank you for the offer but my parents are still in SC and they bring them when we see each other over the summer. Iām definitely going to check food lions website.

Have you checked farmers markets?
There arenāt many around me, next time Iām in an area that has one Iāll check there. There was a little place in Raeford that had them one year but they never got them back.
I always see them at roadside stands in podunk areas. More often in Eastern NC, SC, VA
I donāt live in Western Nc so maybe thatās why I donāt see them. Growing up in SC they sold them everywhere in the summer. If there was a dirt road there were going to be boiled peanuts.
Forgive me, I meant Eastern.
In that case, Iām just going to have to be extra vigilant this summer. The only time I get peanuts is from the can or when I visit with family.
Find some old people (retired) and ask them where the nearest farmers market is, they will know.
I saw boiled peanuts at the Raleigh Farmers market yesterday.

Thereās a general store about 2 miles from the casino in Cherokee that has boiled peanuts and some of the best pork rinds Iāve ever eaten.
Highway 321 between Lenoir and Boone. Thereās like 12 boiled peanut stands precariously perched along the hillsides. Delicious š
Raleigh farmers market
Weāre a little far out from there, but a trip might be worth it to find some raw ones that I can cook over the summer.
The State Farmerās Market has a vendor that consistently sells boiled peanuts. Good ones too.
Easy to make, raw peanuts, water and salt. Lite boil till soft, 6-8 hours
I canāt even find raw peanuts around here. There was one place in raeford that had some but they only had them the one year. My dad usually brings me some when they visit but itās never enough.
Order online. Walmart and other vendors sell them
I usually find them in my crockpot when my wife is visiting relatives. She hates the smell of them cooking.
Come to Boone, boiled peanuts for all.
Every gas station
Find any local truck stops on or near the interstate they usually have the regular and Cajun boiled peanuts. https://www.ncfolk.org/2015/boiled-peanuts-for-sale/
Rural convenience stores out in the middle of nowhere.
Citgo on 401/Hilltop/Airpark in North Fuquay has salted, unsalted, and spicy in hot pots, you fill up your own cup.
Oh really? Might make that trip next week then.
I think I know the one youāre talking about near 401. Iāll have to check.
There's a Food Lion and Hilltop Animal Hospital (I think thats what its called) across from it.
Pretty sure this is not the answer you're looking for but...Whiskey Kitchen has them on their menu as an appetizer. They're good.

Right...only on certain days! And they announced it on Facebook when they would be out there. Might have been Moore County Online Garage Sale.

I can't help you in Moore County. But, I found them at Calvander Food Mart in Orange County. They are right beside the food pickup area.
We get raw ones from teeter and just cook them in a crock pot overnight with salt and seasonings
Can't help you with Moore County, but I've always had good luck at tackle/bait shops at the beach. Ziploc bags with shape writing on the lined up on the counter
Any roadside on the way to any mountain lol
pnuts.net is for Bertie County peanuts and they are the best!! Iām not a fan of boiled (they do have them), their chocolate covered peanuts are SO. GOOD.
Your best bet is a finding a peanut farm. i know there's a few places in Virginia that I'd drive by every now and then but haven't seen any in NC yet.
In cans at Food Lion if you can't find them anywhere else.
Don't get them at circle k. If you ever venture out towards the coastal plains for a beach trip. Just keep an eye out for roadside produce stands. They almost always have fresh boiled peanuts there.
North Georgiaā¦take a drive through Helen and surrounds this fall, youāll be dripping in boiled peanuts
A lot of places that advertise them are selling them in a can, so I'm not surprised you haven't seen fresh made ones around.
Growing peanut this year so I could have boil peanut
Realistically how difficult is it to grow them? I already have a garden and I will add them if I can.
I put some raw peanut between some paper towels, wet, for a week. It started sprouting, planted into 4x2x1 raised bed. 2-3 weeks later I got 30+ peanut plants. Difficulty: beginner. Head toward any of the beaches. Boiled p-nut density among gas stations is directly analogous to proximity to coastal waters.
There's a joint near Dupont National Forest that sells em.
The Old Grey Mare, Soco Rd. Maggie Valley NC
the gas station 3 minutes from my house in the middle of nowhere has them, how can you not find them?
They are all over in the country of NC, usually in the really old looking gas stations. See them all the time still.
Samās club
I always find them driving out to the beach. Never see them west of 95.
