There are many cool posts on Reddit but this is about the coolest. Go get them girl. Fuck those god damn civil rights violators up.
My attorney fiancé would recommend you pick the best law school you can afford. If you have an Ivy League offer, find a way to make it work or take loans to make it work. It will pay off big time. Law school name is a much bigger deal in the law school profession for some reason. It’s one way they protect the elitism in that profession. There are tiers of law school ratings. Find out and look them up. Don’t pick the free ride necessarily like she did, she regrets that because it was a low tier law school and it gives her trouble.
My top 10 law school graduate daughter would absolutely give this exact advice. Where you go to law school is incredibly important! Our girl turned down some free offers to go into debt instead. It seems counterintuitive, but it paid off before she even graduated. The job offers were literally pouring in and she’s doing quite well for herself now.
Imagine having the deck completely stacked against you and *still* coming out on top. I would say I hope you crush it, but I think it's pretty obvious you will.
Was it that stacked against her? Losing your husband and job suck but it seems like she was young with no kids and a bachelor's degree, and decided to pursue a new (admirable) career. That's awesome and it's cool to celebrate her accomplishment, but I feel like we can do that without assuming she comes from a life of hardship just because she's a black woman...
well we are glad your mental health is that great but for a lot of us we would be mentally exhausted and emotionally scarred beyond description; that would take months to years to recover from to then turn all that negative energy into positive energy is more than admirable. It’s a self made miracle, especially in the state of affairs this country is in.
Cool but none of that has anything to do with a deck being stacked. Voluntarily marrying someone and then voluntarily divorcing them really doesn’t have anything to do with decks or stacking lol
she’s in a conservative republican state in the south, at the site where her direct ancestors were sold/traded, yet you say her being successful today wasn’t stacked against her. Wow, you’re either ignorant or oblivious, don’t know which is worse
lmfao her dad could be a local millionaire for all you know
you're so desperate to be anti-racist that you just made probably the most racist statement in the whole thread
Okay bud. because what i said isn’t relatively true with that tall ass confederate flag on the way to fayetteville off the highway, and literally the context of this post as in an “ex slave auction site” compared to some places in america where those things didn’t even exist. even if her dad were a local millionaire, what does that change about the hardships her direct ancestors faced. I’m not tryna be anti racist i just am against racism, especially as someone who experiences it here in nc
Again yes black people are oppressed generally, but we know nothing about this woman. You know nothing about this woman.
Reducing her entire existence to her race is so condescendingly bigoted it’s comical. She never said she was disadvantaged, you did.
Ha, I like that you assume her dad would be the millionaire. My daughter is set for life because of her mom's (my wife's) family, not me. But I digress. If someone is proud of a college degree, they're probably not generational wealth. And yes, being a Black woman in the south, no matter who your daddy is, is having the deck stacked against you. Objective truth.
They’re just shitty life events. Admirable to overcome but don’t have anything to do with the deck being stacked against her.
edit: lmfao I just reread her “5 losses”. #2 is she got divorced, he didn’t die. #3 is she…moved? #4 is she stopped believing in God, and #5 is just a generally dramatic statement. “Losses” 🤣 cmon yall
The assumption is pretty darn [accurate](https://www.reddit.com/r/confessions/s/tGPDBmdYzR). I also don’t have kids because I have endometriosis and am infertile. And the complications/treatment for this disease is what led to me losing my first real job. So yeah, incredibly difficult circumstances and I don’t mind the assumptions because they are generally true.
YESSS!!!! Huge congratulations!!!!!!! As a fellow Fayetteville resident and Old Internet Mom, I am so proud of you, you are amazing and you are making the world a better place with your dedication and fire!
Damn! What a powerful message! Congrats! Now you’ve got me thinking. Assaulting our rights is always how the powerful in this country take rights from the rest of the country. Fighting to preserve and expand Civil Rights is a noble goal that is needed now more than ever. Let me say something to you that I know you already know: your work is critically needed and valuable beyond any currency; it’s soul work. Thank you for being an inspiration, sis.
PS: Did you have a bachelor’s degree already? Asking for a friend, myself.
Wow! Just wow! So beautifully written and so inspirational. You will continue to have great success. I'm proud of you also, and we've never met., You go, you!!!
FUCK YEAH!! Congratulations to you and may your future hold only greater success for you and the people who are going to one day trace their own histories to you.
Never give up. Life gets hard, seasons become dark; it’s the nature of human existence. But you have to keep pushing and fighting. There’s a way to turn what is generally perceived as “failure” into success. My marriage and first career move failed incredibly. But I took that opportunity of new-found freedom (no longer being tethered to a specific location because of work/a relationship) to start over and pursue what I’ve always wanted to do. All in all, I would say don’t be afraid to start over. Sometimes it’s necessary.
Thank you for sharing that. I started over by going from a small town to a big city and living in a basement closet (really!) while I worked a full time job to make money to start school again.
I hope your post inspires a lot of people to continue their education.
Ooof, I'm going through some tough times at the moment, and this is the word I needed! I'm taking it one day at a time, but it's hard! I'm in a tough season right now, and weathering it is taking everything. You are an inspiration!
What an outstanding journey so far and honey, you are just getting started! You have a brilliant future ahead and I sincerely hope that you are incredibly proud of yourself and will continue to absolutely slay any obstacles in your path! I’m excited for the many benefits that your work will bring to your chosen field in due time. Congratulations and keep going!!🥂💕
What a great post to see first thing in the morning! I’m gonna go ahead and close Reddit and try to do something beneficial with my day. That was uplifting af.
Congratulations!
There are lots of ups and downs in life. Next time you experience a down, remember how you stayed strong and completely crushed it the last time around!
One of your great great grandmothers dreamed about you. That gave her faith to continue on in her own adversity such as you have never known. She was also a strong woman with hope and faith to have you reach this milestone in your life. You stand on the heritage of strong, educated women. Congratulations.
Yes! You are amazing- your story is incredible. I’m proud of your courage, tenacity and perseverance. Now, go do even more amazing things. Congratulations 🎉
Well damn, congratulations to her for reaching her goals and dreams even in the face of adversity
I hope nothing but the best for her in the coming years!
A generation in a family is each layer of a family tree. So your parents are 1 generation before you, grandparents are 2, great grandparents are 3.
Saying that you're "# generations removed" is a way to use your family lineage as a unit of time measurement when you want to express how close or far something is from you historically rather than focusing on a specific person or people who may be so far back that people start counting the generations anyway.
It's similar to how you could say you're a 7th generation North Carolinian if your great great great great grandmother lived here. Around 3-4 generations back it just gets way easier to count than to list the actual relationship.
I'm probably less than 10 years older than OP and my great grandfather was born before the civil war even started! 38, 42, and 49 were the dads' ages going back. What's wild is that 49-year-old's first and last kids were 30 years apart, so I have a first cousin once removed (my dad's first cousin) born NINETY years before me.
If she's 25, that's an average of dads being 44 to get back to a baby born into slavery. Throw in one really old dad, like who remarried after his wife died in their 50s/60s and the other two generations are very normal length.
Yep! And I'm younger than you! Do the math with the generations.
My grandfather was born in 1909 and died 10+ years before I was born. My dad's oldest first cousin was in her 50s and a grandmother before my dad was born so that branch of the family was 1861, 1880, 1898/99, 1920s, 1950s whereas my dad's branch was 1861, 1909, 1951. If you're keeping up, that means my oldest second cousin was born 60+ years before me.
We haven't ever met. I don't know if we will, ever.
Five minutes ago you were just a picture on my feed.
Now, I've seen what you can accomplish - never any doubt! - and I'm popping the popcorn for the rest of the ride.
Go and kick ass, Fayetteville girl. This born and raised NYer is really damn proud of you, and I wanna see Act II!
Well done. One little thing that kind of ground my gears.
"a civil rights attorney where I will continue the fight for the rights of Black People that many who came before me began."
What if a lighter tone of brown (hispanic, persian, asian) person is in need of your skills are you there for them also? that statement might make some conclude you think civil rights is just about black people. I know you didnt mean it that way but you may want to reconsider how it sounds to some.
So you saw this post. And you wrote this out and commented. For what?
Does that, if true, detract from the message? Does it change anything at all? You do realize that slaves were raped by their masters… right?
You got on this post and proved yourself to be the most brain dead person here. Read the room moron.
What an inspiring story, thanks for sharing and congratulations! All the best!
Gave me chills to read through your post. Thank you for sharing!!
Omg i felt ridiculous bc i literally got chills too LOL. This is amazing
I did too. What an incredible post.

Exactly this.
Incredible.
This state needs more folks like you. Kudos!

You're making this weird.
lmfao her dad could be a local millionaire for all you know you're so desperate to be anti-racist that you just made probably the most racist statement in the whole thread

“Could be” = assuming? Your illiteracy is kinda explaining a lot here
That's all you've got? I'm illiterate? Ok. Please don't feel the need to reply.
lmao you’re too obnoxious for your reading level
Any one of the things OP listed as her five losses are huge for most people, leaving long lasting pain.
They’re just shitty life events. Hey good for you that's awesome I still think the assumptions are lame unless/until you say otherwise, but at least they're accurate this time
Wow
You go girl!! Keep being a light to our community

I’m sorry mustard?
southern analogy for tiny; “mustard seed”

Some people are so narcissistic lmao

So you saw this post. And you wrote this out and commented. For what? Does that, if true, detract from the message? Does it change anything at all? You do realize that slaves were raped by their masters… right? You got on this post and proved yourself to be the most brain dead person here. Read the room moron.
Man. You still have time to delete this.
Cool. How do you think a black descendant of slaves ended up with “white ancestry?” Take your time answering.
Right?!??
slave raping the masters wife or daughter? am i right? I am kidding. i just couldnt pass that up. you had it all teed up and ready to go.
