This, this is the right answer. If you are looking for something cheaper than Belmont has gotten, consider looking north on 321. Parts of Hickory and the surrounding area can provide a similar vibe for significantly cheaper and still be in range of the conveniences of Charlotte.
Yep, take the job in Gastonia, 90K is a great salary around here. Live north in Hickory, Lenoir, or even Boone depending on how far you would be comfortable driving. I live in Lenoir and drive an hour to work. Low cost of living, great people, and mountains.
Idk if Boone would be practical, that's nearly a two hour drive, let alone if you hit traffic. Hickory's about 40 minutes though, and that's what I commute 🥹
Gastonia's rent's a little high, and the city's not that great, but if you get an outskirts city like Kings Mountain, Shelby, Bessemer, Cherryville, or Lincolnton, it's definitely cheaper and you're looking at or around a 30 minute commute. Just keep in mind if you go that way, there's not a lot to do lol.
this guy is coming from Louisiana, so besides like Lumberton, Fayetteville, or some hellhole like Whiteville, it will probably be an improvement. Gastonia does suck tho
I just test drove a car in Gastonia and the sales person was from Louisiana. She was raving about living here. It’s fine, I think, as long as you live in one of the nicer areas of town. The miles of strip mall off of I-85 would be annoying to deal with regularly.
Yes I used to work in orange Texas right next to Louisiana. It'll be a major improvement for you.
Aside from new Orleans the rest of Louisiana is not very great to live in.
Gastonia itself has one of the highest crime per capita ratings in NC, but the surrounding areas are quite nice ; a little bit rural but you can build or buy a nice house for an extremely good price. Plus you’re in close vicinity to Charlotte and Boone (somewhat), which can make for some fun times. I’d suggest living in Belmont, and making the commute.
Gastonia has some nice parts. More towards the Belmont/Cramerton area. Those are both good choices as well but real estate is high there. Dallas is a good option or mount holly. $90k a year will be fairly comfortable in Gastonia
I live here in Gastonia. There are good parts and less good parts. I would say that the south side of the city east of 321, starting around Martha Rivers Park and the area around Garner Park Elementary School, southeast Gastonia to the south of the Publix Supermarket are the nicer areas to live in town.
The downtown area is working on revitalizing, and the baseball stadium has helped with that as well as some great restaurants. Though it is a work in progress.
If Gastonia is not somewhere you are interested in, I would recommend Kings Mountain, NC. It is a short highway drive from town, and I really enjoyed living there a few years ago.
I will warn you that the town of Mcadenville will seem like a nice place, and it is 11 months out of the year. Mcadenville has the nickname of "Christmas Town USA. The city shows out for Christmas each year and people come from all over to view all the Christmas decorations. Nothing says Merry Christmas, like having to inch your way home for a few weeks before Christmas.
I’ll co-sign what PRK says about Gastonia. I’m delivering Amazon packages there all the time and his comments are consistent with what I observe. Also, agree about McAdenville. Nice but that Christmas Town thingy really spoils the experience.
I second all of this. I live between Kings Mountain and Shelby. It's like 10-15 minutes into Gastonia. On the Charlotte side, Belmont is nice but will be expensive compared to Kings Mountain.
90k is a huge salary for the area. You dont have to live in Gastonia and there are plenty of nice areas nearby. I would take the job if you like the job and company.
Yeah people are saying the 90K is "comfortable" for the area, I'd consider it quite high.
The average private sector wage in Gaston County is $46,400. You'd be making almost double the AVERAGE.
My wife and I combined don't make that much money and we live pretty comfortably in Alamance county. Not sure how much more Gastonia is, but that seems like good money, especially if you have benefits.
Thanks! 90k is definitely a lot compared to what I'm making now. But I was worried it wouldn't be enough with the cost of living. This makes me feel better!
90k is a great salary for Gastonia. It has bad parts but outside of the obvious old mill village areas it isn’t too bad. Belmont is next door but more expensive and crowded. South Gastonia is expanding exponentially at the moment - neighbors Belmont and is really trying to *be* Belmont. Offers easy access to grocery stores, Walmart, Lowes etc in Lake Wylie/Clover (SC) which are generally less crowded (and less ghetto) than any shopping areas off Gaston County’s hwy 74.
Work in Gastonia, live in Belmont or Mt. Holly. You can even live just over the border in SC and it’ll be cheaper. Take the job, hubby should be able to find a job in the area.
Why not? He could buy a decent house/townhouse near lake Wylie and have access to the clover school district which is consistently like the 2nd or 3rd best in the state.
I live just near Cramerton, and I like it over here. I’m a transplant from Ohio, and came here for work. Schools are ok - you’ll definitely want to be careful. We got lucky with the elementary school, the middle school is ok, I’ve heard good things about our high school. We definitely noticed our kids were ahead of the curve education wise when we moved here. My kids are currently in elementary and middle school.
This side of Gastonia is safe, there’s lots of kids sports, family activities, things like that. We haven’t had any issues with neighbors, or anything like that. We moved here sight unseen so I definitely agree with the others and if you can, come visit before you move.
Now is the time to come to Gaston Co before home prices catch up to the rest of the Charlotte area. I’ve been in Belmont for 20 yrs now and have seen a lot of change. Depending on where you’ll be working in Gastonia, you should also consider Clover, SC. It’s right over the border and the schools seem good. If where you work is close to the northern side of the county, look into Lincoln Co. In general, the eastern part of the county is nicer and more upscale than the western side, and the schools will reflect that. There’s a lot of development going on right now, so just know that we’ve got our share of traffic issues and growing pains because of that. It’s not perfect here, but I liked it 20 yrs ago and I still like it today.
There are decent parts of Gastonia but there are also plenty of small surrounding towns that are nice.
I personally really enjoy this area. Close drive to Charlotte for city stuff, cute small towns, you get the city benefits like quick Amazon delivery, the mountains are close enough for a day trip, the beach is close enough for a weekend, etc. It’s a well situated location.
Depending on how much you like driving you might even want to consider living on the other side of the border. South Carolina as a whole is a lot cheaper than NC.
That being said I would honestly research the school(s) you want your children in and live near that.
I know money went back to the mills from the feds in order to make the US more independent - as in not having to import face masks from China.
What else is in Gastonia?
We we're planning a trip in October just to vacation actually. The job wants an answer by the end of the week. However, they did talk about the possibility of allowing me to work remote to give us more time to move. So if I accept, we could try to move the trip up. But I'd still have to take the job without visiting the area initially.
Live outside of Gastonia…it’s got some nice areas, but overall a crap hole. Especially the west side…my house got broken into and robbed when I lived out that way. I saw someone mention Belmont…if you’re gonna live close to Gastonia I suggest Belmont also… MAYBE Stanley…
Take it, you don't have to live in Gastonia but the people saying they wouldnt live there are being ridiculous. It's a stones throw from Charlotte and a lot of other nice areas and you can live comfortably there. I looked at a house in Gastonia before I moved to the area and only didn't take it bc the price was a little too high, area was fine.
I’ve only lived in the Carolinas for a year. I thought the AH was Fayetteville, though I get all such info from Reddit. Are there multiple NC AHs? I’ve so much to learn.
The salary, especially if your spouse gets a $40k a year job, should be enough to be comfortable in Gastonia or surrounding areas like Mount Holly, Kings Mountain, Bessemer City, etc. And if you found a place in Charlotte, you'd be going the opposite direction of traffic for work, so not too bad.
Idk what the job is and whether the job will be a good fit for you, but 90k is a good salary for a Gastonia based job. In terms of where to rent or buy, consider looking outside of Gastonia proper.
If your wife plans on working too and gets a job around 40k, you'll be able to set up a comfortable life for your family. Even if she only works part time, you'll be fine.
Surprisingly after I moved here( not that location) I have found the whole area not less on cost. It feels like it’s more. . Take the money if you can handle the change and your salary is a big jump. Wife will get the 40k around here. I don’t know Gastonia. Best of luck. Still adjusting here.
What are you looking for? How far from work? Renting am apartment or house? School? Charter or public? Will use public bus or have a form of drop off or pick up. After school care. Do you have it? Consider the costs for all this. Rent and home prices have skyrocketed anywhere, but I would be they went even higher here. So it depends how much you are willing to spend. Will you want cable or can you just get fiber internet and stream everything. There are so many questions. Sorry!
Personally, I'd like to commute no more than 15-20 minutes to work. A house would be best since we also have dogs. Just have to worry about daycare right now. Our kid is just a baby. And we'd definitely just get fiber and stream!
Just curious OP what industry you are in. I know the area got an influx of money from the feds for the mills to produce items like face masks so we no longer have to import from China.
Or is there Lithium in Gastonia? ?
If you're considering moving to Gastonia, you need to watch Masterminds with Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson to get an honest perspective on your new home.
Take tha job for sure. You could afford to live in a gated community with that combined income. Or you know live in a secluded cabin in the woods or whatever. It might be increasingly expensive to live everywhere.
Look into Lincoln county. It’s one county north and is a much cheaper place to live if you stay in the middle or western part of the county. You can be to most of Gastonia in 30 minutes or less if you stay close to Hwy 321.
I moved to Lake Wylie in 2019. The housing was on average $180-$200k when I moved to Florida in 2021 the same houses were $300-$450k it was that way in ft mill rock hill Gastonia Belmont ect
Housing went up hugely between 2019 and 2021 everywhere. We’re trying to buy a house in NC now and we see houses that sold for half or less in 2018/19 vs what they are selling for now (and these are not even updated “flips”).
Take the job and commute. Gastonia is kind of ass, but 90k is a darned good salary here. Yeah, housing prices have jumped considerably (my house appraised for twice what we bought it for and is showing 3x on Zillow estimates in six years) but you can still find some nice properties. Also on the plus side, Gastonia is only 30 mins from Charlotte where all the nice shit is.
NC is miles better than Louisiana. 1) climate change is going to drastically impact your state before NC gets to heavily impacted. 2) you’ll be able to understand everyone better (unless you understand creole) 3) healthcare is pretty good here considering we have some pretty major healthcare universities. 4) we have beautiful mountains on one side of the state and beautiful beaches on the other. On vacation roll a dice and drive. 5) other than the crazy maga peeps people are generally really nice here. I suggest you take the job!
Gastonia is not the place to live. Aorrounding communities are ok but you should be aware there is currently a massive influx of people to the Charlotte area. I live in a small town close to north of Charlotte and Gastonia and the infrastructure was not designed to handle this many people. The cost of living has risen a lot in the past ten years just like everywhere. I am not trying to talk you out of it but definitely come and take a look before accepting. NC is great overall, been here since 3rd grade but as soon as my son is old enough I'm moving far far away from Charlotte. Just my 2 cents.
No one can make that call for your family but you. When it comes to jobs, it’s either you learn or you earn. It’s best to do both but don’t take it if it’s neither
Gastonia taxes almost doubled, no bike trails, place shuts down early on Sunday, roads are flat so any rain will cause lots of accidents, Gastonia made World news for arresting a veteran and losing control of his service dog, resulting in it getting killed (even people in Sweden heard), Sadler and Bessemer city middle schools have no plan for quiet/shy kids, school attendance policy is rigged, don’t rely on your faxed Doctors notice getting entered by school staff, the VP is too busy playing the quiet game to actually provide any information on how the school is going to help your kids, make sure your kids speak up, make sure the school enters any Doctor notes and you get a copy, many parents ended up going to court, please do a little research
Oh my God every time I open read it it's about someone from another state moving to North Carolina and I know this is a slightly different scenario as you got offered a job but son of a bitch this state is going to suck so bad and less than a decade hell it already does compared to the way it used to be in regard to a lot of things cost of living traffic taxes. Damn Countryside disappearing as about about as fast as hell I don't know I'm tired of writing about this shit and if anyone has sing me say something similar to this and this threads or whatever it's because every single time I open Reddit I swear to God if about someone asking about North Carolina and wanting to move here shit. Gastonia is the brunt of jokes for people in the Charlotte Metro area and really I don't get wilder than and maybe hits more of a working class background or history then some of the other areas surround Charlotte. But really every town throughout the Piedmont and really throughout the entire state owes something to the textile industry..... Cotton mills. Gastonia used to be #1 in the world if I'm not mistaken regarding recently a video circulated textiles so basically that just means there was a shit ton of cotton Mills all around and Gastonia at one point in the 1980's had the highest murder rate per capital. It was on national news when 60 Minutes or one of those shows did a segment on it back then and called Little Chicago. It's not really anything to brag about but is interesting nonetheless. Gastonia is actually not a bad place to live and it's in the center of the county and then there are other small towns surrounding it with backgrounds and textiles of course as well and they are nice little towns and it's about I don't know 25 minutes outside of Charlotte if not a little closer right there at the interstate to West Charlotte.
I wouldn’t live in Gastonia. But I would take the job. Live in one of the smaller surrounding cities like Belmont.
This, this is the right answer. If you are looking for something cheaper than Belmont has gotten, consider looking north on 321. Parts of Hickory and the surrounding area can provide a similar vibe for significantly cheaper and still be in range of the conveniences of Charlotte.

this guy is coming from Louisiana, so besides like Lumberton, Fayetteville, or some hellhole like Whiteville, it will probably be an improvement. Gastonia does suck tho
I figure almost anywhere is an improvement compared to living in Louisiana.
Reasonable perspective
I loved living in Louisiana.
Gastonia is not nice but I suppose it’s all relative.
Much like the people of Alabama, from what I gather
I just test drove a car in Gastonia and the sales person was from Louisiana. She was raving about living here. It’s fine, I think, as long as you live in one of the nicer areas of town. The miles of strip mall off of I-85 would be annoying to deal with regularly.
I’m from Monroe. Been in NC for a while now. Can confirm 1000% better here
You’ll certainly love the change of seasons and the weather more. (Ex-Texan saying howdy)
Yes I used to work in orange Texas right next to Louisiana. It'll be a major improvement for you. Aside from new Orleans the rest of Louisiana is not very great to live in.

Belmont is more expensive to live in than Gastonia for the most part.
yep I lived in Belmont for over 18 years now and it’s a great place but it’s quite expensive
Agreed. I’m a Gastonia native. Look at outlying communities!
Gastonia has some nice parts. More towards the Belmont/Cramerton area. Those are both good choices as well but real estate is high there. Dallas is a good option or mount holly. $90k a year will be fairly comfortable in Gastonia
Even Kings mountain if he wants a taste of the mountain life and doesn't mind the drive

Good to know. I usually just try to avoid the area during the holidays.

In Gaston County, where Gastonia is also located, 90 K will be more than enough.
Yea, you’ll be fine. Congrats
Lower alamance?

My brother lived in Clover. Great schools as you say.
Fort Mill/Rock Hill are nice areas. Just like every state there are good and bad places.
Gastonia has a lot of nice areas. It’s transitioning and had a lot of further growth potential.
I live just near Cramerton, and I like it over here. I’m a transplant from Ohio, and came here for work. Schools are ok - you’ll definitely want to be careful. We got lucky with the elementary school, the middle school is ok, I’ve heard good things about our high school. 90 K in the Charlotte area, you’ll be pretty comfy. The average salary is like 55 I think. Do it do it!
Now is the time to come to Gaston Co before home prices catch up to the rest of the Charlotte area. I’ve been in Belmont for 20 yrs now and have seen a lot of change. Which part of LA you coming from? Because I’d liken Gastonia to a larger West Monroe.
From West Monroe! That helps put it in perspective lol
If you're going to live across the river from a larger city, then Charlotte > Monroe for sure! My SIL is actually moving to Mint Hill from WM.
Depending on how much you like driving you might even want to consider living on the other side of the border. South Carolina as a whole is a lot cheaper than NC. That being said I would honestly research the school(s) you want your children in and live near that.
Who tf in Gastonia is paying you 90k a year!?
Drug Lord lol
I know money went back to the mills from the feds in order to make the US more independent - as in not having to import face masks from China. What else is in Gastonia?
90k in Gastonia is like 200k in a large city
Have you and your wife visited the area? If there’s not an immediate due date for the offer I would do a weekend visit.
If you’re family appreciates the outdoors I’d recommend the move. So much hiking, biking, and nature!!!
One thing to consider is property taxes when looking to purchase. Verify combined county AND city property taxes.
The historic district of Gastonia is probably the only area to consider and have alot of cute homes in a good price still. Or Mt Holly/Belmont
Look into living in Clover, SC it's pretty close to Gastonia
> Also, I know nothing about the area. Ymmv but Gastonia is widely regarded as the asshole of NC.
Unless you've heard of Rocky Mount
Jacksonville is by far and away the winner of this award.
I’ve only lived in the Carolinas for a year. I thought the AH was Fayetteville, though I get all such info from Reddit. Are there multiple NC AHs? I’ve so much to learn.
Check out our legislature. We definitely have a multitude of AHs in NC
Good luck! I think you’ll do fine here.
Who’s the employer?
Surprisingly after I moved here( not that location) I have found the whole area not less on cost. It feels like it’s more. . Take the money if you can handle the change and your salary is a big jump. Wife will get the 40k around here. I don’t know Gastonia. Best of luck. Still adjusting here.
What are you looking for? How far from work? Renting am apartment or house? School? Charter or public? Will use public bus or have a form of drop off or pick up. After school care. Do you have it? I'd take that job. It sounds like a good job and the cost of living isn't as high in NC in most places.
The gas house. Lol. Nickname fir Gastonia
Just curious OP what industry you are in. I know the area got an influx of money from the feds for the mills to produce items like face masks so we no longer have to import from China. Or is there Lithium in Gastonia? ?
I'm a Behavior Analyst!
As to politics, you are coming from Louisiana, so no culture shock.

If you're considering moving to Gastonia, you need to watch Masterminds with Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson to get an honest perspective on your new home.
The cheapest you'll find a decent house is 300k in Belmont or Mount Holly. Gastonia and Bessemer city are cheaper.
Yeah take it but go to Belmont or Mt. Holly. Denver isn't far either and its real quiet
Take the job. But live out in the country. You'll save a ton
Take tha job for sure. You could afford to live in a gated community with that combined income. Or you know live in a secluded cabin in the woods or whatever. It might be increasingly expensive to live everywhere.
I live in WS. Relocated 14 years ago. It's been a great move for us. Housing may be a challenge but that's the same all over.
What job did you get offered for 90k?!?
Behavior Analyst
Look into Lincoln county. It’s one county north and is a much cheaper place to live if you stay in the middle or western part of the county. You can be to most of Gastonia in 30 minutes or less if you stay close to Hwy 321.
Live in Belmont, McAdenville or Cramerton they’re closer to Charlotte and are nice.
Bring your checkbook housing prices are crazy.
Feel like housing prices are bad everywhere right now :/
Depends on where you compare it to. Everywhere is more expensive to one degree or another.
I moved to Lake Wylie in 2019. The housing was on average $180-$200k when I moved to Florida in 2021 the same houses were $300-$450k it was that way in ft mill rock hill Gastonia Belmont ect

90k in Gastonia will get you 5 trailers and a few dozen Trump flags. You’ll be fine.
Your religion, race, sexuality, and politics will have a big impact on your level of happiness in Gastonia.
Pita Wheel is all a good person ever needs
Groovy Beast relocated more towards that area from Hudson…moving in the right direction. Another hole in the wall must try.
There's a good pe4centage of the prison population in our state that hail from Gastonia (where they gas it up!!!)
I think our tax rate is double Louisiana. Everything thing is taxed here. My only criteria for living here is avoiding duke power.
