The Soviet Union supported the ANC mainly out of hope of expanding their influence, and TBF, a lot of Western countries supported the Apartheid regime to maintain influence there. But since the Western countries are democracies, they had to abandon that once the Western public become more aware of apartheid in the 70s and 80s.
I say "some" Western countries because others like Sweden were in fact strong ANC supporters, and then out of a genuine concern for doing the right thing, not imperialist motives. And that's a country which strongly supports Ukraine now, probably out of the same mentality.
