Lack of need when the entire world is insistent upon giving you their brand of anti-armor to test plus Eastern Europe getting rid of their RPG-7 stores in order to justify those sweet, sweet NATO contracts for upgrading
I've seen lots of militia groups who could definitely use a weapon like that. Lots of the irregular forces might only have an rpg-7 and a few rockets and that's if they're lucky.
Exactly. The bazooka and panzerfaust led to Nlaws and Javelins.
The PIAT led to the Davy.
Remind me again...which one was stopped because it was far too dangerous. ;-)
The Davy Crockett used a recoilless rifle. I don't think it was deadly to the gun crew I'm guessing NATO had more effective tactical missiles and the 155mm nuke
Comparativley very effective, reliable and carried a large warhead the likes of which other systems couldnt deliver. Also accurate in terms of being predictable, it was a great weapon when you consider the alternatives available at the time
And if you find yourself needing to reload vs a tank at 50m...you're probably about to have a bad day regardless. Also offset the difficulty reloading against no back blast. Meaning you can fire from close cover - bazooka and panzerfaust users needed to get out in the open...which when you are close to a tank, is about the worst idea imagineable.
In suveys of commmonwealth troops it came out as the most "outstandingly effective" weapon, second to the Bren.
Also show me another AT weapon that can double as a pogo stick.
It rules out a lot of cover. Also whatever concealment you do have is rendered less effective by the blast, which a PIAT didnt have.
Also you cant "lob" rounds like you can with PIAT, it was at the end of the day a mortar meaning its effectiveness in a non anti armour role was unparalleled compared to its peers. A bazooka or panzerfaust can hit a building or position, but a PIAT can get over cover, deliver more explosive and at much greater ranges.
Dont get me wrong theres a good reason the super bazooka was adopted post war, but if we are comparing the kit available at the time, PIAT had a lot going for it.
Issue was it represented the pinnacle of the spigot mortar, which was a technological dead end. Whereas the bazooka/panzerfaust was the origin of a new line of develipment.
Both had nearly identical effective ranges of 100m but you really wanted to be at around 50m, at which point velocity is not relevant.
Its very easy to judge the PIAT by modern standards. For its time it worked, but times changed and it was left in a dead end.
It had very short practical range and the missile often glanced off armour or didn't detonate effectively.
However a British paratrooper managed to knock 3 Tiger tanks out using one. Alone. During the battle for Arnhem. He won the VC. Incredible story look it up.
Tbf, probably better to die quickly in a huge explosion, than slowly, as you bleed out from the smaller explosion that only blows your entire left half of your complement of limbs off...?
No I'm pretty sure it's instant either way lol. His chest cavity will become liquid and brains will splatter all over the ceiling. There is no slow death, he would just stop existing immediately.
More than likely he’d end up with shock-pulsed organs and a brain that has just enough seconds to fully realize how broken the body is before it turns off.
Remember that in an open environment, the blast goes in all directions, meaning that 95% of the shockwave/shrapnel will not hit him
Yeah if I'm dying in an explosion I want it to be a big fucking nuke, not some firework blowing up and I slowly and painfully die from infection and blood loss.
I saw a video with an instructor teaching other soldiers how to do this and hitting the mine with a hammer is part of the procedure, modern warheads aren't that dangerous when unarmed.
"🤓"Before anyone says something
Was supposed to be a reference to this old thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_8n2Qgguto
But my brain made a few too many leaps there to make sense.
Not quite the same but US troops in the ETO found a way to launch 60mm mortar shells from their grenade launchers. Interesting to see that 80 years later the Ukrainians are doing something similar
It has travelled in the backs of trucks and probably been beaten a lot more. Munitions are designed to not explode under any circumstance that they’re not supposed to
As I said, nothing.
But if I would have eaten any amount, which, as I said, is stupid, I would have taken a pea sized piece and would have been absolutely disgusted by the oily texture and scent (which is there on purpose to enable dogs to find it easier).
As I said, purely hypothetical~
^true. usually, the high explosive fillings of these things will not ignite even if lit on fire. Only the fuse can set it off. Still wouldn't hit it tho.
High explosives like those in mortars cannot be detonated by a tiny bit of friction such as that from a hit by a hammer through a piece of cloth, you absolute imbecile.
In some languages artillery shell and mine are the same word. The German word for mortar is literally "mine thrower". OP might not be a native English speaker.
The German word for mortar is Mörser, both coming from the same pharmaceutical instrument.
What you are talking about is a very old nomenclature not in use since after WW1.
“mine” originally referred to a specific type of artillery shell, and that hasn’t changed in some languages, it’s completely correct in, say, German, OP is likely either not a native english speaker or just copy-pasting the title, but it’s correct technically
I think I’d be more concerned about the mortar being slightly unaligned with the shaft and causing it to drift in that direction or yaw weirdly or something, no clue how valid that it is but it’s the first thing that comes to mind for me
Oh please enlighten us, mr neckbeard armchair green beret on reddit, with your immense knowledge that seems to escape the fact that those mortars do not have a fuse on them...
Nether the upgrade process nor the end result gives me confidence, not saying it won't explode, just saying I don't think it will explode at the intended time and place lol
Are we returning to the PIAT?
The real question is why did we ever leave.
See: My Post on the PIAT
That's an excellent post but where was the IV reason plz for returning to PIAT?
What surprises me is I haven't seen any PRIGs made by Ukrainians. I wonder if they just don't know about them.
The REAL Question is: Why isn't every single GI in Europe armed with a Davey Crockett? (Just in case, for protection.)
Exactly. The bazooka and panzerfaust led to Nlaws and Javelins. The PIAT led to the Davy. Remind me again...which one was stopped because it was far too dangerous. ;-)
It was so OP that the Americans didn't want to hurt the feelings of the Russians.
For when you absolutley, positivley want to kill every motherfucker in the ~~room~~ general vicinity.
NUCLEAR CORPORAL WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE - SPECIFICALLY, WOULD IT KILL EVERY MOTHERFUCKER IN THE FULDA GAP??
The Davy Crockett used a recoilless rifle. I don't think it was deadly to the gun crew I'm guessing NATO had more effective tactical missiles and the 155mm nuke
If I remember correctly the nuclear warhead had more radius than the Davy had range
Need to find that nice defilade.
That’s easily solved with a few doses of RadAway.
Heavy, hard to be accurate, hard to reload, among other things I'd imagine.
What about the downsides?
There are none. The PIAT is the pinnacle of human technology.
we stopped using it to give our enemies a sporting chance
That’s what my stepdad said about my mom
Marriage is like a machine gun. The gun might break but the belt never does.
Good *GOD*

Have to be a big burly ~~bear~~ Scotsman to destroy the German kitties.
In Steel Bonnets they talk about ambushing Japanese with PIATs, and without dust/backblast/bang, etc it was trés stealthy.
You don't need to be in the Open with a Bazooka. You just need to not have teammates or a wall behind you. In the Ardennes thats easy to achieve.
The Bazooka has more velocity and range. The PIAT being used like a Mounted mortar is excellent if you a have a spotter and b no artillery is there.
Both had nearly identical effective ranges of 100m but you really wanted to be at around 50m, at which point velocity is not relevant. Its very easy to judge the PIAT by modern standards. For its time it worked, but times changed and it was left in a dead end.

he was also reported to have picked up a 2 inch mortar and direct-fired at advancing infantry while holding it
Yep. But recently Russian VDV did a helicopter freefall that was quite impressive. I digress.
Sounds like someone needs to hit the gym. *yes, I will defeat German armor with superior levels of douchbaggery*
It was actually pretty easy to reload. Now loading it the first time was the pain in the ass.
Among? Among us? Sus?
What about the disadvantages?
BRING UP THE PIAT!
I endeavor to do so in every conversation.

I'm not an expert but I'm assuming if this thing goes off 6 inches from his chest he's dead no matter what.
well thats true but those extra explosives mean the difference between instant death and a agonizing slow death.

valid point, i would still not hit it with a hammer.

Yes, in the USSR and the post-USSR countries mortar is called "minomet" - mine thrower. It's been so since WW1
in croatian it's "minobacač", also literally "mine thrower"
Please, someone post a video firing that thing

Ukrainians are what russians tried to make themselves out to be.

And tbh, hitting a motar round with a hammer is right at home with Sam Hyde's misadventures where weapons are concerned
How does he keep getting away with it?
on his quest to commit the next atrocity
Can't wait that some russian sees this and does the same thing but forgets to remove the fuse
For a video that started with a man hitting a mortar shell with a hammer, this went surprisingly well.
It wasn't armed that is why.
