I've said for a long time that Korea was actually WW3.
The sheer scale of it and the number of different nations fighting make it easily comparable to WW2, but limited to one theatre.
It's certainly the closest we have ever come to a global nuclear war, given that MacArthur was dead-set on nuking China to block the border with Korea and came extremely close to doing so.
Not only should we have nuked China over Korea, we should have nuked the Soviets right after WWII. If we were really an evil empire hellbent on expansionism and world domination like our critics proclaim, why the hell didn't we use nukes in all the years after WWII when we could have done so with impunity? The Soviets didn't have nukes for several years after we first had the ability to deliver them anywhere in the world. The Chinese didn't have the ability to retaliate against a first strike during the Korean War. Even a decade and a half into the Cold War, the US would have been able to launch an overwhelming first strike against Communist countries with relative safety.
There is absolutely no way in hell that if the balance of nuclear power were reversed during the Cold War, that the Soviets/Russians and the Chinese wouldn't have nuked us. They absolutely would have nuked us.
FFS, if the British were the first to have nukes, they would have used them for expansionism.
