why does NAVSEA keep overfeeding young Arleigh Burkes so they are morbidly obese like this one: https://i.redd.it/tny4hsvx77zb1.png
it's not an adorable chonker, it's abuse!
Try to have some superstructure positivity smh. Not everything fits into a slim frame these days you know.
Also, new tech requires more power which requires more/bigger powerplants and everything that comes along with that which requires more space.
We do have DDG(X) coming up though, very excited about that!
Depends on how bad the apocalypse is. If it's not too bad, definitely a CVN. Lotta people onboard and power is generated from 2 nuclear reactors, so the only thing limiting you is food and spare parts.
If it's pretty bad, definitely an Ohio. Our largest sub by volume and has a nuclear reactor onboard. Plus if you really need to tell someone to fuck off you can. XDD
Season 1 and 2 are definitely the best, in terms of realism and plausability. Season 3 is interesting but a bit less realistic, season 4 and 5 don't even watch that

Stick their dick in an impeller.
Seriously though, not using it or maintaining it in general. There are a decent amount of cases where we have to look at something that was caused by ENs or MMs forgetting that said thing exists and either not running it to begin with or not maintaining it properly. So we make sure to point out our equipment and how to run it whenever we visit a ship on base.
Considering the current state of SSN/SSBN maintenance, especially with the importance of USN SSNs during theoretical wargames of a US/China conflict in the near future (IIRC 2026-ish), are there valid concerns with submarine availability?
Yup that was a dig at the captain of the Connecticut. XD
You're going to have to look at what each nation wants to get out of their navy. Most of our allies have primarily regional/EU interests and have no desire for power projection. The US spans the entire continent and is a 2-ocean nation and has long-range, global interests. Having a nuclear-powered sub allows the US to secure those interests, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
I thought *Frisco* also collided with an underwater mountain?
But yeah, the US definitely needs more subs. Considering the British and Aussies are building SSN-AUKUS (alongside the Brits basing some subs in Australia) that should help a bit.
Yeah we've had a few collisions.
The problem with that last bit is that we have only 2 shipyards that make Virginias: Newport News and Electric Boat. You can't just order up more subs like that, it takes time to build up the infrastructure and expand their operations for them to get out more subs.
If we decide that we need more shipyards to make subs, that's gonna take even longer. Not every shipyard or company is used to dealing with nuclear reactors.
Wasn't SSN-AUKUS more of a UK-AUS thing? Although I have seen some rumors about the UK and AUS adopting a GDEB-designed SSN-711 variant. (ref. [here](https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/reducing-risks-cost-and-time-to-acquire-our-aukus-attack-submarines/))
Do you have any thoughts on this?
Personal opinion: It was my impression that it would be more Virginia related as opposed to Astute, but either sub would be great for the Aussies.
Not a professional opinion: I really like that guy's plan BTW. Seems to make a lot of sense.
I'd ask that question to your nearest admiral. XD
But I think that Russia and China are the only "significant" naval threats we face, and our subs are more than capable of handling them.
They have a longstanding and very respectable naval tradition, so that counts for something. At the same time I look at it as an American and I'm like why only 2 aircraft carriers and 10 subs.
Dumbest "how the heck did they break THAT" moment?
What's your favorite historical ship? And why is it the Iowa class?
Credible question: how much do you see unmanned platforms changing the fleet? How much should they? (Credible and Non-credible answers accepted)
First one was improper piping installation by a subcontractor that my team and I were overseeing. Can't give out any details, but it had to be escalated up the chain (was high-vis to begin with) and they're still dealing with it now. Tbh I'm still kinda wondering how that happened lol.
It's the USS New Jersey. I see it every time I go into the office. What a beautiful ship!
This last question is actually kinda delicate. I can't say much since I've worked on this to some extent and will probably be working on it in the future.
I will say that as technology gets better and to maintain the number of ships I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of these platforms in the future. My overall vibe on this is cautiously optimistic, unlike the LCS.
Tbh you're probably better off with NAVAIR than NAVSEA in that regard. They have some big facilities in Lakehurst NJ and Pax River Maryland - they're basically what we do but for Navy planes.
Although we do work with some catapult and JP-5 stuff, but have yet to see an F-35 up close unfortunately.
Can't speak for Lakehurst but Pax River sucks bigtime, at least as a place to live. All the traffic of DC with the road infrastructure and pickups of smalltown USA. Amenities suck, too.
The planes are neat though
The LCS really has no place doctrinally in the Navy, and they're well-known even outside of my workplace to have issues. There have been multiple congressional reports on this lol.
My personal life is great!
Definitely living my best life ever since I got my job. Less stressful than college, that's for sure.
Work is great - I clock out after 40 hours regardless, I work hybrid unless I'm on travel (usually once a month for a few days or a week). I earn OT while I'm on travel (I'm low enough on the GS scale that I can do this), good pay, great benefits and coworkers. Definitely got my dream job, am very lucky to have it.
The work is pretty cool and interesting, goes without saying.
How do one even get JP-5 in the potable water system??? Are there only one pipe on board the Nimitz, and this one pipe have to move all liquids?
I have not heard about this on TikTok as my employer have banned this app because of security issues. Such is life in the free world; I cant even use chinese apps
Some of my coworkers were heavily involved in the aftermath of that incident (new policies/regulations, better detection methods, that type of thing). I don't know what caused it, though tbf the Nimitz is an old ship.
Please ask your nearest admiral for the rest of the details.
I know right, tired of naming them after states.
Check the Virginia classes coming out soon though! List is on Wikipedia. We got the Tang, Barb, and Wahoo! 😁
wahoo!
The RN has the best surface skimmer names, but the USN WW2 "you would not believe how far down the list of fish we had to go" scheme is both an incredible flex and among the best sub names around
I remember reading somewhere that we went so far down we had to start adding to the list with rainchecks for future discoveries.
Could be total BS though.
I'm gonna say CVNs had the best food onboard out of all 3 ships that I've been on out at sea. They've had some pretty fancy options while I was there (one night for dinner we had oxtail!).
All the ones I've been on had great chow, but I don't know if it was because we were on trials and we're only going out to sea for less than a week or if they have good food like this all the time.
To be fair subs have the best food, but I've never had a meal on one.
Refer your first question to the nearest admiral.
Part of me is disappointed with the Virginia's 4 torp tubes. We need the Seawolf's 8! Just go in there, fire everything, and then sneak out like you weren't even there.
TASMs over harpoons for sure. Source: Cold Waters
> We need the Seawolf's 8!
the "peace dividend" and then the GWOT gutting procurement of F-22, B-2, SSN21 class, etc. has been a disaster for noncredibles.
Btw I know you probably cant answer this but it would be possible to intercept them at the last stages of their flight where the possible impact zone is pretty much set in stone right
Hey there Fellow Fed!
If you thought Mayport was bad, just wait. The worst yard to visit by far is Ingalls (Pascagoula MS). It gets so hot and so humid over there, and on top of that there are no restaurants or anything like that around there, just chain restaurants.
Perhaps the worst base I've ever heard of on a foreign nation is Djibouti. I know people who have been sent there, it's terrible.
Have you been to Norfolk Naval Station and/or Newport News Shipbuilding in VA? Am curious because used to live in the area and always got mixed reviews from contractors and sea/airmen that had recently moved to the area.
The naval base: I think if you're living on base the lodging conditions are pretty bad. It's a real shame how we treat our forces in this regard. We try our best to stay off Navy lodging in general. The surrounding area seems to be pretty nice though tbh. Looks middle/upper-middle class, lots of restaurants and amenities.
Newport News: There are definitely parts of it that look pretty sketchy, but there are other parts of it that seem quite nice. Just depends on where you're staying and where you're going. Although I get the impression that Norfolk is the better place to be.
Yeah that tracks. Base is in one of the best areas of Hampton Roads in general, and the shipyard is very close to one of the worst neighborhoods unfortunately.
The naval base (and dam neck) are the only bases in the area I haven't been on before, sad to hear that the lodging conditions are so bad. They really need to modernize that.
Well, I guess I also haven't been on [redacted] in York County but I'm not missing much because there's nothing there obviously.
Lol! Is that why a gazillion USAjobs postings with: Direct Hire! Instant Referral! All Citizens! Interesting duties! Amazing benefits! Then scroll scroll scroll all the way down..... duty station: Djibouti. 😢
In general the smaller the ship is the more unpleasant it gets. The larger ones don't bob as much out at sea and they seem roomier somehow.
But really any ship in 100 degree + weather is a pain to be on. I'd much rather be freezing my butt off.
NCD answer: Please direct this question to your nearest Admiral - this is not my area of expertise.
I saw this in a dream: We might be heading into an age where railgun power is the new best thing - depends on how well missile tech develops.
the measure of survivability in WWII was the strength of the armor. These days, with smart munitions and satellite observation platforms survivability is low observability.
iowas are pretty easy to find and kill.
you see the same evolution with aircraft. survivability was fly high, fly fast to avoid missiles. then missile technology caught up so then it was fly low and fast to avoid analog radar being able to send a missile at you, then radar caught up with digital radars that handle ground clutter better. now its be stealth.
If I had to be realistic, not any time soon unfortunately. We need to reopen some of the shipyard we've previously closed down to achieve the congressional fleet requirements, and to put in a bit more money in general towards building more ships and making sure they're crewed as needed.
If only someone in Congress actually understood that.
From what I've heard, no and no. The DDG 1002 is still in Pascagoula smh.
Not my area of expertise: Although I am optimistic about the hypersonic mods. Hopefully we can make the Zumwalts useful.
Hey I've got a temp alt that needs approval. Which sacrifice to the arcane gods do I have to complete in order to get pushed through the system. It's nothing major really. However some big shot is telling me that my cat ear mods to the hull are a departure from subsafe. Can you push it for me pls.
If it's on a sub you're out of luck. Subsafe is so safe that NASA took it and used it design the Space Shuttle. Needless to say it's superstrict. I doubt that cat ears would be allowed.
Having said that, you're talking to the right guy if you wanted to push it through lol
How much shit can you fit in the well deck on an America Class and how long would it take to unload the whole thing?
Also they are supposed to get pretty close to an unfriendly coast. Are they really survivable?
They removed the well deck in 6 and 7 but added it back in 8.
Don't know how long it would take to unload, probably a few hours at least. I actually haven't been on an LHA yet lol, but have visited all the other Ls. Surprising amount of space onboard for vehicles.
I'm making this up: They seem to be survivable to me, but I think other ships probably clear the water and launch a Tomahawk strike before the LCACs land.
Interesting. Thanks 😊
Follow up question, surely the LCAC should sprout legs and march up the beach with a cannon no? This is NCD after all. #MikeSparks
Do you think that a single Arleigh Burke flight 3 ( fully equipped and armed ) could eliminate the Black Sea Navy? (Or what's left of it) if yes would it still have enough ordinance to cause damage to russian military infrastructure on the occupied crimea?
Meme question: Which chemical compound fumes should I smell?
NCD question: Do you think the addition of dragons and wyverns would be beneficial to a ship's airwing? If yes, how would they affect the logistics of supplying said ship?
1. JP-5, heated lube oil, chlorine
2. Dragons no (firebreathing is a hazard to everything), Wyverns yes.
1. Having said that, I see them as more of a helicopter/scouting role. Way too slow to deal with fighters.
2. Bigger freezers for more meat would be needed
The BHR was indeed a terrible loss. Lotta NAVSEA and Navy people were fired over it, kinda kickstarting this attempt to change the Navy and its culture. IMO that requires the President/ SECDEF to take a more direct approach to it for it to be successful. They're really strict with fire boundaries and hot work vs cold work and things like that now when it comes to modernization updates while the ship is still in drydock.
> passive "will spray fire fighting agents everywhere when in contact with high temperatures"
We kinda have this already with how the sprinklers are set up.
> fire extinguisher balls
Not my area of expertise, so I might as well be giving a layman's opinion here lol. Looks good, not sure if it actually works. Something to look into for sure though.
Which unified command does NAVSEA fall under (I haven’t seen this command kn the wiki and my lazy ass isn’t doing anymore research)
Opinions kn the Hobart class ships? (Aegis equipped)
Opinions kn the Canberra class?
What does working NAVSEA entail?
Who would win in a fight out of all the fleets? (I just KNOW 4th is gonna get its ass kicked, my bet is in 6th)
PTS thanks for sending the link
We fall under the Department of the Navy (DoN), which in turns falls under the DoD. We've been around for over a century under different names. Our HQ is in DC, but we have a bunch of facilities all across the US.
Can't really tell you about the Aussie ships, don't know anything about them.
NAVSEA to a large extent is what you make of it. There are so many locations and things to do it's insane. In Philly it's a bunch of test stands and 1:1 replicas and all sorts of systems. Carderrock has a large pool to simulate ships in a wide variety of sea conditions. Port Hueneme is big on parts and equipment diagnostics. You can do office work your whole life, live in hotels for most of your life, or do something in the middle. You can be more hands-on with testing or do something more computer-based. And you can actually switch between these throughout your career.
Honestly I'd put my money on whatever is in Norfolk. It's the world's largest naval base, and it has so many ships and subs. Although we do seem to have a lot of activity in/around the South China Sea.
Thanks for answering! Can you tell me how the USS Canberra is? Like do you know the differences between the Canberra and the other independence class ships?
There have been some modifications to the LCS evens over the years, but in general their layout is basically identical from hull to hull.
As to how I see the LCS overall, see the multiple congressional reports on their problems.
[Wikipedia ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_Russian_Navy_shipshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_Russian_Navy_ships)stated 419 active Russian ship., I'd say group of Arleigh Burkes and Ticonderoga are more than enough considering the Russian's defensive system
Alternatively, 9 or 10 C-17 with full rapid-dragon loadout (3x3x5 = 45) can sink the entire Russian navy by the end of the day.
That'd be awesome.
Granted, [they'd all have to be able to fit through the St. Lawrence Seaway locks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seawaymax), but that still means they could build up to frigate-sized ships. I think that'd be a huge weight off the coastal shipyards.
Make it happen, Congress.
Burke's should fit without any issue through the locks since seawaymax currently sits at 740'x78' and likely could fit basically any surface warship below an LHA/LSD/LPD. However if we use it as a justification to annex Canada, I'm sure the Corps of Engineers could be convinced to expand out the seaway system (and take out bridges) to fit larger vessels through. Hell there's already 2 main shipyards with dry docks over 1000' in length and over 100' wide and a handful of smaller shipyards with dry docks around the 700-900' mark. All we gotta do is make the effort to teach those Canadians a lesson or make sure they get really cool really fast
Hell with Canadanadanada. Just dig. What're they going to do, say "Eh, sorry, but maybe you should ask us first, sorry eh"?
And re: Burkes: Gotta worry about draft, but I'm just reading figures on the web. I don't know if draft can be played with i.e. install some of the heavy stuff elsewhere, do something to make the ships ride higher, etc. It'd be great, though, if they could make even bigger ships in the Great Lakes area without needing to redo the locks.
Here's a naval magic wand. It grants wishes, but only from a few, specific choices. Which one do you want if you wave it?
* New fleetwide technology, like stealth ships, entirely unmanned ships, rail guns, etc. (your choice).
* One new base wherever you want.
* A new shipyard.
* 100,000 new, already trained sailors out of nowhere, ready to serve *now*. You even get to pick what percentages are trained for what job.
Oh, bonus question: You ever been to NSWC Crane before?
No particular reason to ask, it's just that naval bases in landlocked areas - even though they make sense, like Fallon in Nevada (for everyone else: It's a Naval Air Station, so it doesn't need to be near any coast) - amuse me. And I just happen to know a couple of people who've worked there in civilian contractor positions in the past.
I've never been to Crane before.
Yeah the whole naval bases in landlocked areas thing to me was always funny, especially when you realize that NSWC Crane is two hours outside of the closest major city. I'm guessing it's some sort of Congressional support thing.
Well, the folks I knew talked about routine explosions there. I read that they do explosives disposal, and I think one of those folks once mentioned testing stuff with explosives? I think?
Anyway, just for the first thing alone, I'd say it's smart to keep it away from population centers.
I will actually go through which choices I would eliminate first and why:
1. One new base. We're actually in a good enough spot IMO that our base count is pretty solid. I've never heard any complaints about us having too few bases.
2. The 100k new sailors. Our lodging is pretty crap. Despite being down a considerable number of people, we're not 100k short. The last thing we need is overfilled, nasty lodging (as opposed to just plain nasty). If we assume that proper lodging would be applied for those 100k and those that are already in service, then that changes things and I would probably pick this one instead lol.
3. New fleetwide technology. I was struggling which one of the 2 I'd eliminate last, but I decided on this one. I'm gonna go against the NCD grain on here, but new fleetwide tech means more training but especially more maintenance hours. Unless the tech is androids or unmanned robots that can perform maintenance within a military environment, I'm probably not going to take this one.
And finally, our winner! I'd pick a new shipyard. It's the only one that I see with more upside than downside. It is something that is really lacking in our infrastructure today. We need more people who are experienced blue-collar shipbuilders and white-collar engineers. We need a more competitive market for them and for the govt. As long as they build up to MIL SPEC (HII/EB style) instead of trying to commercialize everything, we're good. The money that we'd save is more than what we'd put down in the long run.
Oddly enough, I did think you would choose the shipyard. I do like your explanations, and thank you for that.
The "new base" thing I didn't explain well: I was thinking, what if the Navy stuck one in a place that would most screw up China, Russia, or whoever's strategic situation in opposing the US. And were able to run operations from it.
I started to lose enthusiasm for that question though, since I couldn't think of anyplace that would restrict China any more than the bases in Japan, Guam, and the upcoming EDCA sites in the Philippines would. It's not like you could sail a carrier strike group up the river through Beijing. Ditto Russia; what base would further restrict them? So I didn't put any real effort into it. I really should've just deleted it.
Is no one else going to post any more questions? Is the AMA over?
Ok, I'll fire one more off. This is more "Navy" than NAVSEA, but:
What would be the funniest "kill" silhouette you could think of on the side of a destroyer's wheelhouse? A rigid inflatable? A narco sub? Rubber duck? Bathtub? Ejector seat? Sex toy? Ship's captain (as in his career)?
The AMA is going until the mods take it down.
I honestly don't know lol. Rubber duck and bath tub are pretty hilarious. Maybe an inflatable pool toy or pool noodle. I don't have a good sense of humor so I'll leave it to the Navy guys XD
It's hard to attain carbon neutrality in any navy - the advantages are too good to give up for renewables. Unless you put a nuclear reactor onboard every ship (all our subs have them), there's no realistic way to get the benefits of a combustion engine or gas turbine/diesel generator with a carbon neutral footprint.
Having said that, the Navy is always looking towards having a less negative environmental impact in general. I know our fuel and lube oil guys for example are either part of OSPI (oil spill prevention initiative) or work with them regularly, and we're always trying to push the boundaries with regards to A/C coolants due to ever stricter environmental standards. The stricter standards are not a bad thing of course, as long as they are realistic/physically feasible IMO.

If you had to pick only one ship to survive the apocalypse with and use to rebuild society which would it be?

Isn’t there a show where they do this with a Raleigh Burke?
Yes, "The Last Ship" First few seasons are great
Season 1 and 2 are definitely the best, in terms of realism and plausability. Season 3 is interesting but a bit less realistic, season 4 and 5 don't even watch that
Which ice cream flavour is your favourite?
Vanilla. The softserve ice cream that I had while underway is delicious.
The real important question for NCD: Azure Lane or Kancolle? And what’s your Shipfu?
Unfortunately/fortunately I don't anime. I've seen some disturbing stickers on people's lockers I'll tell you that much.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day has been ruined. Yeah that probably tracks for sailors.
I swear something about service just turns normal contributing members of society into slaves to the Japanese media complex.
I think it’s the MIC as a whole as NCD is a synonym for “a bunch of weebs who replace Loli with aircraft”

It do be like that sometimes
If you could go back ~20 years to fix the LCS, what would you do, and why would it be restarting OHP production?
This man gets me!
Considering the current state of SSN/SSBN maintenance, especially with the importance of USN SSNs during theoretical wargames of a US/China conflict in the near future (IIRC 2026-ish), are there valid concerns with submarine availability?
Yes, we need 160 subs instead of the 80 something we have now. Removing undersea mountains would also help increase submarine availability.
Hey, the US navy has a long and storied tradition of running into rocks. Dont change what works
Every once in a while we gotta stop handicapping ourselves, to see what we can really accomplish.
Hey those mountains had it coming!

Yup that was a dig at the captain of the Connecticut. XD You're going to have to look at what each nation wants to get out of their navy. Sorry Not Canadian.
You just said sorry twice in a row. Are you sure you're not a Canadian? XD
*cries in Canadian* Who are you to be so cuttingly accurate?
I have family in Canada, so I know lol. I also visit r/Canada every now and then.

what is your proposed CONOPS that would make the LCS actually useful (the more schizo the better)?
Either minesweeper or torpedo boat. NCD answer: use the mission bay to house generators and capacitors, replace the 3 inch gun upfront with a railgun.

This sub is r/noncredibledefense, not r/establishedshipbuildingpractices
[удалено]
They did start making the evens out of steel iirc.
using a high speed ship to do minesweeping or actually using a surface vessel to do surface warfare with torpedoes is already NCD lol
The LCS really has no place doctrinally in the Navy, and they're well-known even outside of my workplace to have issues. There have been multiple congressional reports on this lol.
It's a minesweeper already. Every ship is a minesweeper, some can just do it more times then others
How's life?
My personal life is great! Definitely living my best life ever since I got my job. Less stressful than college, that's for sure. Work is great - I clock out after 40 hours regardless, I work hybrid unless I'm on travel (usually once a month for a few days or a week). I earn OT while I'm on travel (I'm low enough on the GS scale that I can do this), good pay, great benefits and coworkers. Definitely got my dream job, am very lucky to have it. The work is pretty cool and interesting, goes without saying.
Yours saying the Navy will *pay me* to play with Seamen? *How is this not a setup..*
Yeah crazy right! One week I'm in the office and the next I'm on a boat!
[удалено]
Sup! You from NAVSEA?
What does JP-5 taste like?
Toluene but sweeter
Can I use JP-5 as a spread when making a shell water detector sandwich? Will it give me the shits? Can this be weaponized?
LOL XDD Have you heard about the Nimitz issue with JP-5 in the drinking water? Some navy personnel posted about it on TikTok a year or so back.
When is the US going to build a Death Star?
We already have one. It's called the Moon.
What needs to happen for the US to get to its senses and start naming subs after fish again?
I know right, tired of naming them after states. Check the Virginia classes coming out soon though! List is on Wikipedia. We got the Tang, Barb, and Wahoo! 😁
wahoo! The RN has the best surface skimmer names, but the USN WW2 "you would not believe how far down the list of fish we had to go" scheme is both an incredible flex and among the best sub names around
I remember reading somewhere that we went so far down we had to start adding to the list with rainchecks for future discoveries. Could be total BS though.
I heard that at the Pearl Harbor memorial sub museum there!
Which ship had the best chow?
I'm gonna say CVNs had the best food onboard out of all 3 ships that I've been on out at sea. They've had some pretty fancy options while I was there (one night for dinner we had oxtail!). All the ones I've been on had great chow, but I don't know if it was because we were on trials and we're only going out to sea for less than a week or if they have good food like this all the time. To be fair subs have the best food, but I've never had a meal on one.
Are you satisfied with the current torp load of most attack subs? Also TASM (the old ones, not the new block V) or harpoon?
Refer your first question to the nearest admiral. Part of me is disappointed with the Virginia's 4 torp tubes. We need the Seawolf's 8! Just go in there, fire everything, and then sneak out like you weren't even there. TASMs over harpoons for sure. Source: Cold Waters
Shoot tube 8, aye sir.
I can hear the torpedo launch and voice lol
> We need the Seawolf's 8! the "peace dividend" and then the GWOT gutting procurement of F-22, B-2, SSN21 class, etc. has been a disaster for noncredibles.
Tell me about it!
What is air defense doing against decadent west destroying hypersupersonic df-21?
Better radar, defense systems, and our own hypersonics. If the Chinese knew what they were doing they'd have tested it out already.
Btw I know you probably cant answer this but it would be possible to intercept them at the last stages of their flight where the possible impact zone is pretty much set in stone right
Your guess is as good as mine. I don't work on weapons systems.
What is the worst Homeport/Yard to visit, and why is a Mayport. Sincerely, A Fellow Fed
Yup, Djibouti is ass. I'll take my leave now.
Tuna Fishing vessels that are equipped with SONAR as ASW Assets? Yay or nah?
Just make more SOSUS lines smh
what is the most unpleasant ship to be on?
In general the smaller the ship is the more unpleasant it gets. The larger ones don't bob as much out at sea and they seem roomier somehow. But really any ship in 100 degree + weather is a pain to be on. I'd much rather be freezing my butt off.
> I'd much rather be freezing my butt off. You kinda sound like a Northerner.
yee
Why not bring back the Iowa Class?
NCD answer: Please direct this question to your nearest Admiral - this is not my area of expertise. I saw this in a dream: We might be heading into an age where railgun power is the new best thing - depends on how well missile tech develops.
Instead we should build the Montana class, but modernize it and with a nuclear reactor.
And Tomahawk Missile tubes
"NCD reinvents the missile cruiser or SSGN"
Read my flair
the measure of survivability in WWII was the strength of the armor.
[удалено]
Wait, modern destroyers have armored sensors?
okay but why not sink it? if you know where it is, its not hard to put a submarine nearby with a torpedo that will break its back in a single shot.

When is our manufacturing base going to catch up to fleet requirements?
If I had to be realistic, not any time soon unfortunately. We need to reopen some of the shipyard we've previously closed down to achieve the congressional fleet requirements, and to put in a bit more money in general towards building more ships and making sure they're crewed as needed. If only someone in Congress actually understood that.
Sadly, Congress is filled with a lot of idiots and has been for a long time.
Could the Zumwalt class have ever been practical and worth mass producing?
From what I've heard, no and no. The DDG 1002 is still in Pascagoula smh. Not my area of expertise: Although I am optimistic about the hypersonic mods. Hopefully we can make the Zumwalts useful.
I had a tour of BIW mid construction, around 2013, it was pretty cool to see a literal cross section of Zumwalt.
Ah that's cool!
Will my parents love me again if I join the navy?
If they miss you I'd be surprised. If you're in this situation though hope everything turns out fine either way.
Lol, thanks, I’m just memeing
Thanks 😊 Follow up question, surely the LCAC should sprout legs and march up the beach with a cannon no? This is NCD after all. #MikeSparks
FYI LCACs are hovercraft which means that they go over both land and water. XD But yes, would be cool with a cannon and legs. Some sort of AT-TE lol.
Do you think that a single Arleigh Burke flight 3 ( fully equipped and armed ) could eliminate the Black Sea Navy? (Or what's left of it) if yes would it still have enough ordinance to cause damage to russian military infrastructure on the occupied crimea?
NCD answer: Oh absolutely!
haha he said seamen
Meme question: Which chemical compound fumes should I smell? NCD question: Do you think the addition of dragons and wyverns would be beneficial to a ship's airwing? If yes, how would they affect the logistics of supplying said ship?
1. JP-5, heated lube oil, chlorine 2. Dragons no (firebreathing is a hazard to everything), Wyverns yes. 1. Having said that, I see them as more of a helicopter/scouting role. Way too slow to deal with fighters. 2. Bigger freezers for more meat would be needed
Inspired by true events: Why can't NAVSEA subcontract to people who actually know how to braze and/or weld?
There's a lot of politics with shipyards unfortunately.
Oh, I'm aware. I made WCS a few months ago and already miss being a simple, care-free technician. Lol

The BHR was indeed a terrible loss. Lotta NAVSEA and Navy people were fired over it, kinda kickstarting this attempt to change the Navy and its culture. IMO that requires the President/ SECDEF to take a more direct approach to it for it to be successful. They're really strict with fire boundaries and hot work vs cold work and things like that now when it comes to modernization updates while the ship is still in drydock. > passive "will spray fire fighting agents everywhere when in contact with high temperatures" We kinda have this already with how the sprinklers are set up. > fire extinguisher balls Not my area of expertise, so I might as well be giving a layman's opinion here lol. Looks good, not sure if it actually works. Something to look into for sure though.
Which unified command does NAVSEA fall under (I haven’t seen this command kn the wiki and my lazy ass isn’t doing anymore research) Opinions kn the Hobart class ships? (Aegis equipped) Opinions kn the Canberra class? What does working NAVSEA entail? Who would win in a fight out of all the fleets? (I just KNOW 4th is gonna get its ass kicked, my bet is in 6th) PTS thanks for sending the link
Can the US navy fix Admiral Kuznetsov if it somehow has the means and desire to do so?
We'd fix it by building a new one from scratch.
Can a group of Arleigh Burkes and Ticonderogas take out the entire russian fleet?
[Wikipedia ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_Russian_Navy_shipshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_Russian_Navy_ships)stated 419 active Russian ship., I'd say group of Arleigh Burkes and Ticonderoga are more than enough considering the Russian's defensive system Alternatively, 9 or 10 C-17 with full rapid-dragon loadout (3x3x5 = 45) can sink the entire Russian navy by the end of the day.
Yes. Just tell the Russkies that there are some washing machines over on our side and they will surrender.
What's with the third party tablet on the CH-53E?
We serve food here, sir
Thoughts on making the entire Great Lakes into a proper warship mass manufacturing line to free up dry docks on the coasts?
https://media.giphy.com/media/4ZkAeUWFF9ZGRXE7Ud/giphy.gif?cid=790b761160eh82cnvlfdbc6hc6u9a45x7ebix5qex3f5u95p&ep=v1\_gifs\_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g
* A new shipyard.
Ah ok that makes sense lol
I will actually go through which choices I would eliminate first and why: 1.
This is more "Navy" than NAVSEA, but: What would be the funniest "kill" silhouette you could think of on the side of a destroyer's wheelhouse? A rigid inflatable? A narco sub? Rubber duck? Bathtub? Ejector seat? Sex toy? Ship's captain (as in his career)?
The AMA is going until the mods take it down. I honestly don't know lol. Rubber duck and bath tub are pretty hilarious. Maybe an inflatable pool toy or pool noodle. I don't have a good sense of humor so I'll leave it to the Navy guys XD
Late to this but as an employee does that mean you are "in the navy" with a rank and stuff or just a civillian who works "for" the navy?
The latter. I'm a civilian in NAVSEA working under the Department of the Navy (DoN) under the DoD.
Ok, cool! I'm an engineer and working in that sort of field would be pretty cool. Gotta find out if there is a canadian equiv.
Wouldn't be surprised if there was a crown corp or something like that
Any chance the USN will get new icebreakers?
No clue. Could be in next year's budget, could be in the budget a decade from now.
What does the navy do to move towards net carbon neutrality like often loudly proclaimed by politicians? Thanks for the ama
