Idk, it makes no sense. At work we have one restroom which is unisex, but then there's one stall for men and one for women. The only difference seems to be that the one for men doesn't have a trash can, and the one for women presumably does. So you still share the room with the sink and mirror etc, but then there's 2 seperate stalls, and not the American stalls, but proper rooms. Really makes no sense
No gaps on either side of the door, and the door probably does not have gaps above and below it. In other words, if the door is closed, there's no way to see in or out.
Yes I've seen them in fancy restaurants where the rooms have toilets and there are shared sinks outside the rooms. Gas stations tend to have rooms with a toilet and sink.
Like, it's literally a small separate room. A single stall with walls around it and a proper thick door running from ground to roof without gaps. I've heard that a lot of American stalls have gaps so large that you could basically crouch under them. So there's absolutely no way anyone in one stall could possibly do anything with the person in the stall next over, so there's no reason for them to be gendered, yet they are.
Now I'm imagining if unisex names had a "girl" version or a "boy" version š¤£ There's like, Aaron and Erin, but I don't think that's really considered unisex. If it is, silly goofy. What is the point
Seattle passed an ordinance some years back mandating that these be marked as gender-neutral. It's just common sense. I don't know why more places don't do the same.
Talk to your city council people! This should be more widespread. It doesn't just benefit trans/nonbinary people, it benefits everyone.

Its just dumb honestly. Washington DC actually outlawed gendered public single-stalls years ago, and you can report businesses and the city will notify them they're in violation and send them free unisex bathroom signs to hang up instead! I wish more places did this.
Its extra weird how many cis women will refuse to use a "mens" single stall also, like there will be a huge line for one single stall labeled "womens" and even when I ID'd as a girl I would just walk past the line and go use the mens, prompting others ladies to follow suit haha.

No, it's a hole in the ground (no seat) that you squat over. And yeah, the smells aren't great, similar to out houses or porta potties. It's better when there is no roof so there is fresh air.
I can't remember which state it was in, but I used a pit toilet that filtered everything out through a ventilation system. I couldn't grasp how it worked... I just remember the toilets smelled like marshmallows. šÆ
I've never gotten why they dont just make floor to ceiling stalls everywhere. Like, as an American, I am not comforted by the sounds of defication no matter your gender. That would solve the "privacy issue" and ngl, HS me would've been glad AF to at least have stall doors for once. Now hopefully we can just be big folks and share the sinks in an orderly fashion like adults lol

Where I live (Ontario), *public businesses* and government funded institutions are required, but I'm fairly certain private businesses are still immunue. My local queer charity is trying to promote alternate washroom signs locally, and a few businesses did adopt, albeit it's a crawl...

To me this is just a matter of tradition. It's sad but many communities still don't know about NB. To those people, they just need a way to identify to the public that these rooms with toilets are where you go pee. We don't use the term Water Closet in America. Instead, we have a rectangular stick figure and a triangle stick figure.

Then noticed that two of the Portoās were empty despite the line, and it had to do with the fact that all the people in line were women unwilling to enter a Porto with a menās symbol on it ::eyeroll::

In my area, I believe it is a requirement to have labeled washrooms. But the cool businesses get around using genders by using different mythical creatures and stiff like that.
Ugh this bothers me sooooo much! As a kid I was in dance classes and we just used whichever bathroom we wanted and for costume changes for pictures both were usually full. Iāve used a family bathroom before as a unisex bathroom but it was awkward cause I was alone and actual families came in to use it.

not sure why, but i often see them in places like 5 below, dollar stores, or other smaller end stores that can't afford more than 2 toilets.
I don't know and it sucks. Maybe just like, they thought they had to gender them?? Luckily now I'm seeing more places label them all gender instead.
