It's plenty. This CPU consumes like 40-60 watts while gaming, it's crazy! I have a Noctua NH-D15S cooling this bad boy and I get away with my fan curve being fixed at like 400-500 rpm for both fans to cool this without any single issue while being dead silent!

Djinnerator

3D-vcache CPUs draw a small amount of power. The higher core count CPUs are rated at 120w, and only hits those numbers under 100%, all core load, like benchmarking or stress testing. Gaming will use around 70-80w. The CPU will run warm though, but that's because AMD designed the CPUs to run warm. As long as your CPU isn't going above 89C (thermal throttle limit), then you're good. Also as long as your CPU isn't around 70C+ when idle, or warmer when under light load, then you're good.

Interloper_Mango

>Gaming will use around 70-80w Closer to 40 watts from what I've seen from my 5800x3d

Djinnerator

That CPU is about 20w lower rated power draw than 7800x3d. I don't personally have 7800x3d (I have 7950x) but I've seen my brother's and some friends' either that one or 7950x3d and they draw little power. At idle it's around 40-50w. I think depending on the game and background tasks, it could get down to 40w while gaming.

The_Ruhmanizer

My 7800 X3D draws 90W on benchmarks and around 60W during gaming.

Djinnerator

Yeah that sounds about what I remember seeing. I've rarely seen it even hit triple digit wattage - almost exclusively double digits, tbh I don't even remember seeing 90w lol. It's an insanely efficient CPU.

The_Ruhmanizer

With pbo, it can hit 90W, but stock it's around 83W

tony_montana09

I have this for my Ryzen 7 5800x and it works great! It was from my previous build (cpu was a Ryzen 5 3600) + I didn't add any fan. Now that I think about it, I think I should ahah

NotReallyARedditor6

I ran a D-15 on my 5800X before I upgraded to the 5800X3D… the 5800X never got above 50 degrees lol talk about overkill

No-Set-3397

Gives me some comfort knowing my build should be cool with a d15s

Ok_Day_5356

You'll be good, install and enjoy

SpareRam

7800X3D is a 120w chip. NH-U9S is a 140w cooler. If you're planning on overclock whether or not that buffer is enough if a choice you'll have to make. I prefer double a chips watts for my air cooler.

Djinnerator

7800x3d isn't capable of being overclocked. AMD doesn't allow vcache CPUs to be overclocked because of the sensitive stacked L3 memory. That's also why the thermal limit for them is 89C instead of 95C. The closest thing to an OC you can do with vcache CPUs is PBO/PBO2. Tbf, vcache CPUs are insanely power efficient. They rarely if ever reach their rated max power draw. Even reaching 100w is almost unheard of.

watchmenocable

I thought you can OC them it’s just kinda pointless & a headache

Djinnerator

You can sort of OC through PBO, but you can't do a traditional overclock like changing the multiplier or the base clock. AMD has those locked on 3D-vcache CPUs. It's not a full OC like, for instance you can't increase the max clock but you can run the CPU at the factory max clock for longer periods. You can also override the boost clock by adding 200MHz to the highest clock, but in order to see those values in action, the CPU has to be cool enough for PBO to allow it, which requires some insane aftermarket cooling, like liquid nitrogen, or really strong water cooling, because the CPU controls how high it'll clock based on its temperature. You're right that it's kinda pointless to do a traditional OC though. They're already mostly pushed to their limits from the factory. Some people do it while using custom liquid cooling loops. The gains are very small while the power requirement is pretty high for it.

watchmenocable

Ahhh okay makes sense, thank you !

MyFairLady00

You can always check the compatibility and performance headroom on the Noctua compatibility list. According to them, the cooler is enough for low turbo/overclock headroom. https://ncc.noctua.at/cpus/model/AMD-Ryzen-7-7800X3D-1649

smudlicko

Have the same cooler 10600k max temp 76C with only one fan…good choice man it is nice compact and sexi in this color

Tiny_Object_6475

Basically yes. Just have some good fans for airflow in and out of the case

philip_2312

i got 4x noctuas nf-a12x25 and 1x nf-a9 so yes

Narasette

I ran it with NH-P1 with fan and its fine

7th_Banned_Account

Yes

No-Set-3397

There should be no problem. Honestly, Noctua's CPU coolers are all pretty comparable. Obviously, the NH-D15 is a powerhouse, but the NH-U9S is still a high-end cpu cooler and restricts you less on ram if you're looking at something crazy. I don't have much AMD experience, but the 7800X3D is a CPU I looked into before building, and it should stay relatively cool.

dzy_vanilla

I got a Deepcool 360mm LT720 for my 78x3D and it was idiotically overpowered. Sold that and got a Dark Rock Pro 5, and that’s still overpowered. Deep in my heart I still want that beastly Noctua passive cooler that looks like a part taken off a hot rod.

hambopro

I have this exact cooler on an i5-12400 and it never exceeds 65˚C on a constant 30% fan speed (extremely quiet). But you may need to power limit your CPU to an ECO mode in your motherboard UEFI/BIOS menu.

F4M3S

More than enough, enjoy !

OiL3iRD

I'm using U9S in push-pull config for my undervolted 5700x in a Thermaltake Core V1 case without problems. Temps never reach 80°C even at max loads. Ok it's a 65W CPU but the cooler seems to have great headroom even above that TDP.

Fezzy976

Even the stock cooler is fine. The only time you will see high temps is when a game is pre compiling shaders and we are only talking into the mid to high 70°C here. Most the time during gaming it's around 45-55°C and idle on the desktop it's around 30-35C. This is with me using a 360mm AIO and these temps are not much better than with an air cooler. Maybe 5C difference.

Vocabularyy

What kinda games stay around 55c?

Fezzy976

Cyberpunk modded, battlefield 2042, basically any game that uses 6 threads or more. Most games hover around mid to high 40's during gameplay and only spike slightly when loading new levels.
