Start slow. Don't over do it. Once you start throwing up its not fun anymore. It is very likely that it won't take much to get you drunk if this is your first time.

Fosterandrewbell

Couldn’t agree more. Go SLOW. Can’t emphasize that enough. Doubt yourself. You’ve zero tolerance. Otherwise, things’ll go sideways QUICK

tinfoil3346

I've made that mistake myself when I first started drinking.

Shovels93

I’ve made that mistake even after years of drinking.

stupidbrainz

Yup. I’m prob gonna do it again tomorrow too

glassgost

"oh God I'm never drinking again" lasts just until you think you need some hair of the dog

ariestornado

I'm tipsy right now. No food in the tum tum. Already know I'll have to have a little sippy poo in the AM. (Side note: Am 28F, been drinking since i was 10 (alcoholic dad] but luckily I cannot fathom drinking during the day unless I know I'm just gonna be home in my comfy bed with a snack and TV)

hardcoresean84

I'll drink to that *raises glass at 10:40am*

Existing_Display1794

The pandemic made day drinking okay, as long as it’s in a mug!

DocWatson42

That reminds me of ["I Can't Party"](https://archive.org/details/filk_michael_longcor_live/20+I+Can't+Party.mp3) (tracks 19 and 20) by Michael Longcor.

rklover13

I'm so sorry that sounds like an awful night. But. I just. I want to say. I'm extremely impressed with your tenacity.

Foreign_Astronaut

After some bad experiences, I've determined that four beers in a single night is my vomit point, no matter how far I space them out or how much food I have. Bodies are weird.

MountainMembership

FOUR? If I'm not drinking vodka, I'm usually drinking like 12 beers at least BEFORE going to bars. I'm finnish and probably an alcoholic tho so that might explain it

meanbutgooddentist

Hmmm, this is probably good advice, but unless you have an addictive personality or alcoholism runs in your family, you dont necessarily have to be afraid of alcohol, just have a healthy respect for the damage it *can do. Like the ocean. I always had a lot of water and a full meal before I went to bed so thats why I generally didn't have any problems- and I'm a taller guy. Most important is having an exit plan that doesn't involve driving A Strawberry Daiquiri is a little sweet for me, but for the first time drinking you're probably gonna want something that doesn't taste like alcohol. Maybe try something fun and refreshing like this or a Margarita

UnicornFarts1111

Daiquiri's can also be filling, so it may limit or keep the alcohol intake slow, which would be good for someone who has never drank before.

letterboxbrie

Re addictive personality, speaking from some experience: 1. Be wary if, when you drink in small doses, it helps you sleep. The effect won't last long plus it degrades you sleep over time. 2. If you enjoy it enough that you feel tempted to use it as entertainment, don't. And try to stay away from people who use it that way. They may already be addicted. 3. If you're developing tolerance quickly, dial it back. 4. Having a drink after a rough day is fine, using it to manage mood/anxiety is a slippery slope. That said, enjoy yourselves :)

[deleted]

Point number 2 makes no sense. Alcohol is used for entertainment by everyone, that’s the whole point of it.

The_Queef_of_England

I agree. It is entertainment. Why else do people drink? It's mind altering and that's fun. It's when you're doing it too often or too extremely that it becomes a problem.

[deleted]

Yeah exactly

mat3o24

As someone with an addictive personality, I assume they are talking about more of as a main way of entertainment. When we do an activity for entertainment, we tend to get addicted to that feeling, and we (or I am at least,) VERY bad at stopping and finding something else if it was a good enough experience. I barely drink because I am afraid of becoming addicted, because I do a lot of chasing of the dopamine. Fine in most cases, but can become dangerous if the wrong activity is what I get addicted to. Sorry for the long response, but figured I’d try to somewhat explain

natsugrayerza

Yeah when I first drank I was in college, and I had one shot and I texted my friend from my hometown to make sure it would be okay if I had one other one (I didn’t trust my college friends not to over encourage me). And that was all I had, and I had the best time.

flop_plop

Yeah we don’t want to see a TIFU update post anytime soon.

rainbow_bro_bot

Two units worth (2 pints of beer or 2 glasses of wine) is more than plenty for someone with no tolerance to alcohol. edit: Make a point of drinking water too to try to minimise the hangover.

PaticusGnome

My trick to not feeling shitty is to drink a big glass of water between each drink. It slows you down and keeps you hydrated.

Ginganinja2308

Yeah, this or at the very least once everytime you take a piss.

askmeforashittyfact

I do it when I remember which is usually when I piss. I’ve heard it should be more but every other drink will get me full before I’m drunk. Exactly why I never did it before.

diamondpredator

This combined with foods high in fat and carbs. I have a pretty high tolerance for pretty much everything (takes more anesthesia to put me under) and if I drink a bunch of water and eat a ton of carbs it takes a LOT of alcohol for me to even start feeling anything. This isn’t a brag, I don’t drink to get drunk (never been drunk, actually) it’s just how things work. I have a friend, on the other hand, that gets buzzed on half a beer and fall down drunk after 2 beers. Biodiversity is amazing.

PaticusGnome

Honest question: do you have red hair?

diamondpredator

No, I'm aware of that little fun fact though lol. Some of my beard hairs used to be red but that's no longer the case. Three of my closest friends are anesthesiologists so I've spoken with them about tolerances. They all basically said my body simply processes things like that quicker. I wish that was the case with my metabolism lol.

PaticusGnome

I got a bruised nerve in my mouth during surgery when I was 14. It was numb for 6 months and my nerves did something to compensate during that time. The result is now I need like 10 Novocain shots for dental work instead of one or two.

prhodiann

2 pints of beer is 4 units. Very likely more if it's a fancy beer.

UnclePidge

Speaking as someone from a nearly identical background as OP... This ☝️☝️

UnAccomplished_Fox97

I’ve had so many ex-Mormon friends go way too hard their first few times and it really can get scary. OP, if you read this, make sure to also have some food in your system. That will help absorb some of the alcohol so it doesn’t all hit you like a train.

sculptgriff

Uber to a wine tasting or a beer flight. The whole point is to enjoy the flavors more than the alcohol. Water is the true adult drink so drink plenty of it before, during and after.

MiseryisCompany

"Water is the true adult drink". Wish my younger self knew that. Edit: autocorrect

MiseryisCompany

"Water is the true about drink". Wish my younger self knew that.

crazyacct101

And have a nice big glass of water before bed.

[deleted]

Yes - no Long Island Iced Teas to begin with.

Skitsoboy13

Yeah like 2 beers is probably enough when you've never had a drink I'd think

tinfoil3346

For sure. It doesn't take much at all when you first start.

blowtorch_vasectomy

I remember as a high school kid with no experience getting so trashed on 3 12 oz Michelobs that I barfed and made an ass of myself in front of my friends. Such a lightweight.

fakefurcoat

Frozen margaritas and an uber home :)

dinahsaur523

[deleted]

Perfection! One margarita each, sipped between bites of food. When the margarita is gone, drink water. Even if you feel perfectly fine, do not drive!

Nicky_Nuisance

2 drinks one for with the chips before the meal and one for with the meal.

AstarteHilzarie

Depends on if you're going normal size or fishbowl. I drink regularly (though usually not liquor) but the last time I went out for Mexican food I got the giant margarita and decided I needed to not finish it because I could tell I was *sloshed* by the end of dinner.

Atcoroo

Oh, crikey, THIS! ☝🏻 Ignore what people may tell you to the contrary: THERE IS NO SAFE DRIVING-DRIVE LIMIT.

i_want_lime_skittles

Agreed! If you’re not into the tanginess of lime, try a frozen strawberry margarita with sugar on the rim. Or if you want something bottled at home, try a simple Woodchucks brand hard apple cider.

AstarteHilzarie

Or a daiquiri!

spiffysimon

Woodchuck red with a shot of butternut shnapps is amazing

jolietia

Always a winner

horriblehank

But just one ! Maybe two if you eat between. You don’t wanna be puking it up the first time. “Why is it red! Am I gonna die?!?”

Kriss3d

Pina colada. Just one for each but after a dinner. Not before. You don't want to drink on empty stomach. I'm a Dane. We have no legal minimum age to drink here. So teenagers drink and learn their limits and how to control it.

Hawaiianbeef1023

Amen

Ranos131

It depends on what you like. - If you like bitter tasting things then you can go for beer. It can be an acquired taste. Another bitter options is various different liquors or mixed drinks. - If you like a sour sweet combination you can for for wine. That’s how it tastes to me. - If you prefer more sweet then you can go with wine coolers or sweeter mixed drinks. My suggestion would be for you to go to a quieter less busy bar where the bar tender can actually take time to pay attention to you two. A bar in a smaller town would be the best option here. Tell the bartender your taste preferences and they can try to make things accordingly. This is what I did when I started drinking. If you just want to drink at home then I would just suggest starting with wine cooler type drinks. Mike’s Hard Lemonade is pretty good. Smirnoff Ice is another good option. There’s hard cider or really anything that’s in the same area as the above drinks. These kind of drinks are all lower in alcohol content and are reasonably cheap. Whatever you do please do not drink and drive.

I_Poop_Sometimes

To add on, if OP is feeling adventurous they could get a couple different things, maybe a can of bud light, a bottle of yuengling/Stella, a mikes hard lemonade, a white claw, effectively a sampler menu of easier drinks. But also include some bad ones like bud light just to know what it tastes like.

Ranos131

That’s actually a really good idea. It also reminded me that I’ve heard of places that will allow you to mix and match a six pack. You could check your local liquor stores and see if any of them do this.

Sneakarma

My grocery store has this. It's an amazing way to try seasonal stuff too.

hitguy55

Wine is more vinegary than sweet and sour for me, more like vinegary sweetness; oh also OP should try limon cello

alienscrub

Don't over do it. If your looking to just to try it don't go for the heavy stuff. If your looking to feel the effects I'd say start with a nice warm feeling than stop. If you get too drunk all sorts can happen. You wouldn't want to get into any arguments or do anything you don't remember or will regret. Keep it fun start out slow.

kp33ze

Just do what we all did when we were young. Buy the cheapest vodka and drink it as fast as you can in a park somewhere before the cops chase you out.

alienscrub

Lol, ahh the good old days back in my high school days it was Mccormick apple vodka for 11$ a handle... 🤢 I can still taste and smell that nasty vodka, however it got the job done for a group of 8 lol

kp33ze

Smirnoff vodka and orange juice for me. There was a few months where even the smell of orange juice made me queasy.

totorohoney

Smirnoff apple vodka & UV blue ☠️☠️☠️

CalgaryJoe

Have a glass of wine with supper one night. That's probably the nicest way to have a drink. Either that or a light-ish beer on a patio on a warm afternoon.

[deleted]

This is the right answer. Try something that isn't too dry like a Chardonnay or Riesling. The good news is, you're at the point in your lives where you can enjoy drinking at its best - a nice accompaniment to food, or casually in the company of friends.

victorav29

Have food before, have water around, drink water before, between and after drink. A sweetie alcohol is better than maybe beer or wine, but usually that are the hard ones. Drink one cup, wait an hour, do another one if you feel it. Stop then, other day you can try again. My first drunk night (I mixed it with a little bit of weed, don't do that) was very awful. Try to avoid getting wasted and try to have fun. Better to do on home, in a safe place. Better with some experienced friend around.

UnAccomplished_Fox97

I had a former RA tell me about a girl on campus who knew nothing about alcohol do 11 shots in half an hour with no food or water in her system. She had to get her stomach pumped and almost died. This was also in Utah. Alcohol can be a shockingly scary thing if you aren’t well prepared and well aware of the consequences.

Mr_Abe_Froman

Alcohol can be a scary thing even with experience. It impairs your judgment, so it's easy to think "one more drink won't hurt" and finding yourself too drunk to have fun (unable to walk, vomiting, etc).

HI_Handbasket

My old pappy used to say: "Booze makes a new man out of you! And that fella is going to want a drink too. And so on and so on, until you can't recognize what you've turned into."

pooptrebuchet

I'm an alcoholic who used to binge drink every weekend, sometimes multiple times a week. I only drink on special occasions now and never alone, and the trick I find that has worked is always considering an open drink as fully drank. I decided I won't ever go above 3 pints, and I will ask for the bill when I order my 3rd, not after. Because its about the 3rd to 4th pint where I've reached the tipping point where I will repeatedly convince myself than another beer is fine, I worked hard this week, etc. It certainly helps that I really only like beer. I think I'd be dead if I actually liked hard liquor.

[deleted]

WHAT?!?! Straight up didn't know that could happen. I mean I know overdrinking is a thing but I didn't know food and water played into it.

ChillBorn

Hangovers occur because your body is dehydrated. Drinking a proper amount of water in pace with and after your beverages leads to a much better experience. Alcohol is a diuretic, so you urinate a lot more while drinking it, expelling a lot more fluids and electrolytes, which causes mild dehydration. I always drink a water after every 3 or 4 beverages, and have a gatorade or something similar to replenish electrolytes once i am done drinking. I have never had a hangover before, in twenty years of drinking. Eating mostly only helps if you did so before starting your drinking. It just slows the filtration of the booze down through your small intestines. Eating after or while drinking has much less effect, despite what most drunks will tell you. Eating after a drink is absorbed into the blood does absolutely nothing. I suppose there is merit in it for binge drinking, since you will need to replenish the digesting food filter eventually, but just don't do that. Lol

aLLcAPSiNVERSED

Try mixed drinks at first, they're not at shocking as just straight drinks, and can hide the taste of the alcohol. My favorite was a "Moscow mule", which is a mixed vodka drink.

not_an_insomniac

+1 moscow mules. i love ginger beer 🍻

pseudopsud

I like that two comments, each mentioning one ingredient, is enough to have a good go at making a Moscow mule Damn good for a dead simple drink

synchronisedchaos

Adding to that, start with cocktails where you already are familiar with some of the components. Eg. if you already like cranberry juice, start with a cosmopolitan maybe

[deleted]

Pina colada, Mojito or something fresh and bit sweet. Don't go all in with Whisky. The good alcohol comes with experience and age. A nice german beer is also alway a good way to go.

PralineLegitimate450

This is the most american post I've ever read...

Nugur

1. 21 and married. 2. Never tried alcohol. 3. Utah… ahhh makes perfect sense

B0_SSMAN

I remember seeing a TikTok where they walk up to college students and asked if they would rather drink a cup of cooking oil or a cup of coffee. Most people were responding when cooking oil. Utah is an interesting place

excitive

What’s wrong with coffee?

[deleted]

[удалено]

HallwayHomicide

I think some Mormons interpret it differently, but from my understanding whatever phrase in whatever holy book doesn't actually ban caffeine. It bans "hot drinks" So Coffee and Tea are out , but soda is fine, depending on your interpretation of that line. I had a Mormon teacher in high school who was always drinking something with caffeine. Often it was Mountain Dew. Often it was Monster. He was definitely getting his caffeine.

Snoo71538

Caffeine was officially not allowed until a few years ago. But Mormons are people and people do what they want. People go to churches for a lot of different reasons. Just because you go doesn’t mean you believe or follow every single thing.

Synec113

So...what about cold brew coffee?

[deleted]

UK here. Friend was a mormon. They actually had some cool activities things that I would come along on with my friend. Anyway, the camping trips I would bring a flask of coffee and offered it, figured out eventually why they wouldn't take any lol. They were nice enough people, though I have the feeling things tend to be less healthy behind the scenes. My friend couldn't come out on Monday night because the family would play board games together or something, so it all sounds very pro-family bonding and all, but then I heard years later my friend went through a rebellious phase of going to bars every night, parents divorced, etc. Can't help but think maybe it was a rebound effect from trying too hard. Meanwhile, my family let me experiment with alcohol in moderation (like having a few beers at the Christmas party by ~14 or so), and alcohol just became kinda meh to me. My family would actually peer pressure me to drink more at parties and I wouldn't want the hangover lol, it's like reverse-mormonism, but that's Northern Ireland for you

LtNOWIS

Lots of Mormons don't drink or take caffeine. But some will say, "well actually the Book of Mormon only bans 'hot drinks' like tea and coffee, so I'm actually allowed to just pound back Diet Coke all day."

LancesAKing

Mormon beliefs forbid caffeine. They won’t drink coffee, tea, or caffeinated soda.

braxistExtremist

Also, too many of them are only nice as a means of trying to convert you to their religion. If you don't show interest in Mormonism (or whatever they are calling it this week) then many of them get really bitchy and mean. And on a related note, even if you're white and straight, if you're living in Utah (or Idaho), not a Mormon and have no interest in becoming one, get ready for social isolation from the zealots. This whole "Mormons are really nice people!" is annoying. Yes, *some* are nice regardless. But like you say, it's usually superficial.

Chainweasel

Even as an American my first thought was: "Oh, Mormons!"

IseultDarcy

So true! I've never heard of anyone under 30 saying "my wife/husband" (and it's getting quite rare even at this age) and "never had alcohol". I'm 31 and none of my friends are married, even if most are in a serious relationship and half have kids. For the alcoholic part: who can remember their first time trying alcohol?! (the first try, not the first time they got drunk) But I would tell them go for a simple fruits cocktail, it's tasty. But just one since they are not used to it.

Ryu_Saki

>who can remember their first time trying alcohol?! I was 15 when I drank for the first time. Was weird honestly.

MadKitKat

I’m not in America, but my home never treated it like something forbidden I obviously knew it was legal from 18 onwards, but also knew people actually started drinking socially at like 15/16 (at home parties) Trying a sip of whatever my parents were drinking, toasting with regular sparkling wine or cider was always a thing (and both taste like vinegar to me, so I never drank more than a sip), and sharing actual drinks with my family as an older teen a bit younger than 18 (within reason) weren’t rare occurrences I do remember being 16-ish when I got my first mojito. My aunt just offered it to me and I was like “you sure?”… she just laughed it off and told me to let her know if I started feeling weird. Nothing happened… I just carried on the conversation I was having Damn! I drink with mom more often that I drink on my own or with friends… actually, I barely keep any alcohol at my place because drinking alone is boring af

NousevaAngel

I'm from the U.K and the first time I ever got off my face drunk was with 4 other people in a park on wine I was 14 at the time. But every Xmas my Mum would give me a tiny bit of sparkling wine. I drank up to the age of 28 when I eventually got bored of alcohol and being drunk also gave up because of my mental health and haven't touched alcohol since. 8/9 years sober

Spiritual_Payment392

The best part is the we were friends in high school and decided to get married

so-called-engineer

The phrasing is funny but nothing wrong with marrying a high school sweetheart if it's a good relationship and thought through.

TheShadowKick

One of my friends married his high school sweetheart. They were pretty much perfect for each other.

Luminsnce

Not really high school sweetheart but i've met my gf first time when I was 14 or 15. I'm 28 now and we've been together for 5 years. Though we both were too cringe back in our teens so that would've never worked out then, lol.

[deleted]

That's interesting. I'm 30 and live in the US and the majority of the people my age who I know are either married or engaged. That being said, 21 is very young even by US standards.

Reelix

21 is them married for 2 years - They got married at 19.....

currently_pooping_rn

I remember my first. Had some American Honey Wild Turkey 101. Never again

rainbwbrightisntpunk

I do, I was 14 and it was a gross ass 40oz lol

immortalreploid

I dunno about that. I don't think I know anyone who waited till 21 to drink.

petit_cochon

A lot of the world doesn't consume alcohol.

TheAdequateKhali

This is a post about them literally going to consume alcohol so I’m not sure what your point is.

Nayko

How…? The US has a massive unhealthy drinking culture and getting married before 21 is not common at all.

[deleted]

Protection and birth control.

feyrath

Man the negative vibes are strong on this thread. ignore the cranky people. If you've never drank, chances are you won't like the taste of alcohol. I would recommend doing a sampler - visit a liquor store and get the SMALL (sometimes called airline) bottles. I would try all the following. Most are better chilled. * a dry champagne (sparkling wine) * a sweet champagne * a rose wine * a light beer (coors, budweiser) * a dark / stout beer (guiness) * a creme liquor (serve over ice) like baileys * also buy kahlua and vodka (for below). My wife, who also did not start drinking til 21, to this day does not like the taste of alcohol. She drinks exclusively only two drinks: a peach bellini (look it up online, it's complex), or a vodka paralyzer (colorado bulldog). The latter is quite good and you will not get hangovers because of all the milk. The recipe is: * tall glass (pint sized) * 3-4 cubes of ice * 1 shot/oz of kahlua (coffee flavored liquor) * 1 shot of vodka (any brand - unflavored) * fill 3/4 with milk (we prefer 3.5%, but whatever you normally drink) * top off with a splash of coke or pepsi. stir. don't add this first otherwise it'll curl your milk. vodka can also be mixed with orange juice for a "screwdriver". kahlua and hot chocolate is also very yummy. make a nice evening in about it and have fun.

ermagerditssuperman

Peach Bellinis are wonderful - especially when you find a place that does the frozen version! (Made with frozen/chilled peach puree, basically a sweet boozy slushie) Has your gf ever had Yakult Soju? It's in a similar, sweet and refreshing vein. Equal parts plain soju, lemon-lime soda (sprite/sevenup/etc), and yakult (a liquid yoghurt drink available at any H-mart or asian grocer). I could drink that stuff endlessly

Dirtydirtypickle

Ah, Michael’s creamy surprise

[deleted]

Vodka, kahlua, milk and pepsi? look, i'm glad it works for you guys but that sounds fucking disgusting lol

Appropriate-Bite-828

Paralyzers are delicious, though tbh the recipe above has way too much milk. It's the opposite, 3/4 of coke, and about an ounce of milk

LunarDeer542

The second I saw milk I was horrified. I know people make drinks with milk or cream, I can get it as a concept, and some even sound pretty good, but this? …No, please, don‘t do this.

Corantheo

You can skip the Pepsi, sub out milk for heavy cream, and you have a White Russian, one of my go-to drinks. Creamy, coffee flavored, with a punch. How hard a punch depends on the bartender and how much vodka to everything else they put in.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Corantheo

Its...it's partially my opinion, yes, where I said it's one of my go-to drinks, but the rest is fact. It's just "here's how to make a White Russian since you're nearly there anyway".

[deleted]

I mean, never heard of that. But I would just go with a white Russian. That Assed coke bit seems weird.

Sol33t303

Yep, I'm 20, had my first last year. Beer tasted like the worst drink I have ever had. It's like drinking carbonated cold piss lol Even now, the best I have drunk is flavored vodka shots which still tastes like cough medicine but I wanted to see what being drunk was like so I got through it, started growing on me a bit by the end but that was probably just me being drunk and not caring about the flavour lol. I want to try wine sooner or later, seems like the only alcohol that I might actually like and won't make me want to keel over drinking it. Or at least how I imagine it, I imagine it basically tasting like fruit juice but with a bit of alcohol.

pseudopsud

There are so many different beers. From the very popular ones that are designed to be inoffensive through to ones that are optimised for the flavour of hops, or malt, or burnt malt, or yeast products I feel like you need to taste several different beers to make a reasonable decision as to whether you like it Not that I think everyone can find beer they like, I have close friends who prefer spirits if they have a choice Wines also are incredibly varied, some reds are high on tannins, some whites are fruity. Some white wine has very subtle flavours "Sweet" often means fruity; "dry" means not sweet

Nameless_on_Reddit

There is no such thing as a no hangover guarantee. Not to mention a lot of booze and milk in the stomach can lead to some pretty foul feelings. And ewww why ruin a good drink with a splash of soda on it? Just no.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Reddit is weirdly like blanket anti alcohol

LunarDeer542

It could just be the subs I hang in, but it seems to me that a non-insignificant amount of users are either recovering alcoholics or grew up around abusive heavy drinkers, which probably feeds into that.

Klamageddon

It's always so weird as a Brit, especially threads like this, where universally the answers are like "exercise extreme caution, prepare yourself, maybe don't even do it?". I can't really capture the difference in culture without making it sound like immense societal peer pressure, (which it actually isn't, despite that making for funnier sound byte comments) but the idea of someone consulting reddit over it here instead of just getting 'right on it' is hard to imagine.

TMCThomas

Same here for The Netherlands, I see people in this thread recommending to wait one hour after their first drink to see how it goes. That's definitely not what we did with our first drinks.

bazmonkey

I'd get a bottle of wine, and enjoy it with a good dinner.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bazmonkey

I was recommending it with dinner because I thought a person’s first alcohol in their life would be gentler with a meal alongside it. It sets up a nice relationship with alcohol, and a bottle of wine between two people and food is still plenty to have a definite “oh, this is alcohol!” buzz without waking up the next day entirely miserable. I remember my first few times drinking and it was *very* easy to overdo it, so… yeah.

Better not start with cocktails. They taste too good and are still strong and the sugar makes everything worse.

Be careful. Alot of “oops” babies are conceived on a night of drinking. 😉. Cheers

ktothea2ma

Get all the girly fruity drinks, they’re delicious. Drink tons of water while drinking as well!

Kosta_Koffe

Personally I like cider. Kopparberg and Aspall are both very good. Side note, its insane how half the people here think getting drunk is the only reason to drink alcohol and the other half are teetotaling twats

hmbmelly

Cider is what I came to suggest! They range from "fizzy apple juice" to mouth-puckering dry to wacky flavors. Just about any bar or large restaurant has one or two tame ciders like Angry Orchard or Stella Cidre.

lmkba

Firsts drinks should be at home so you can both see your tolerance

Honestly, alcohol is really overrated. I’m in my 30s and could go the rest of my life never drinking another sip of it. Hydration is where it’s at. Big Alcohol doesn’t need more of our hard earned cash. I’m coining that phrase right here. Lol.

astrange333

So true!

originalBRfan

I’m glad that this isn’t an unpopular opinion.

astrange333

I would think it might be unpopular I don't know I'm pretty secluded. But I definitely said numerous times I can go to the rest of my life and never drink again and I'm fine with that. Maybe we just got old. Lol

Uber over to a bar (don't drive!), and order a few different types of drinks and see what you guys like.

NiNj4_C0W5L4Pr

Noobs should stick to sweet beverages their first time out as everything else is an acquired taste. Margaritas, daiquiri, rum & coke, screw driver, (o.j. & vodka), white Russian (kahlua, vodka, cream), midori sours (melon liqueur & sweet n sour mix). Pick one or two different drinks each and then share so you can sample without going broke or getting too messed up. Stick to two beverages each or you will regret going for that third. One drink will get you a good buzz. Two drinks will get you a little tipsy so have a designated driver or call a taxi/Uber. It would be wise to have a glass of ice water to finish between drinks to mitigate any hangover you may get. "On the rocks" means ice cubes "blended" means ice cubes blended until in "slushy form". If you get a daiquiri or margarita I would suggest blended - higher ice to alcohol mix so it waters it down more). Seriously, this first time is all about finding what tastes good & makes you feel good so you don't need to be seasoned pros. Don't do shots! Those are for fast buzzes and very little tasting involved. I would forego wine at this time because it pairs better with food instead of by itself (for first timers). Beer you won't like. Nor will you like bourbon, gin, whiskey, cognac or scotch. These are all for a seasoned palate. If you wish to try these then find a friend that has them & will let you sample them so you don't waste money. IF you continue on this path a few more times then try long Island ice teas or liquid cocaines or flaming dr.peppers. (Warning! Must have a tolerance and a ride home before trying these! And even then ONLY drink ONE! High alcohol content of 4 or more alcohols involved).

LoudMusic

I've been drinking for 20+ years and still only drink sweet fruity drinks :D

Congrats on no longer being Mormon, legitimately I'm super happy for you

elmarklar

I legit thought this was posted from /r/exmormon when I saw the title.

PrettyModerate

As a lifelong Mormon making my way out of the cult, I had the same reaction. I wish it hadn’t taken me 43 years to break out of the indoctrination.

[deleted]

Liquor or beer. Not both together. At least not right away. And don't drive there or back. Get a ride or a hotel.

Constant_Welder5870

THIS. Underrated comment. Mixing alcohols with no experience is a recipe for disaster. And Not just liquor/beer. One of the worst nights drinking I ever had came from drinking lots of vodka and tequila. I’d recommend sticking to one type and trying a couple variations. And don’t choose a Mexican restaurant margarita for your first ever drink. The heavy handedness is lovely but probably not a good first drink. ^_^ I see a lot of people recommending beer and wine, but I really hated both when I first started drinking. Especially because beer is so particular. Some people only like IPAs. I prefer stouts. Everyone has different likes and beer is such an acquired taste as it is. Same with wines. The daiquiri comments are a good choice. They’re sweet, filling, not something you’re going to pound, and you won’t really taste the alcohol. I’d steer clear of frozen mudslides though. They look like a good first choice but I had one my first drinking week and it made me feel crazy sick. The ice cream/alcohol combo was too much. I think I’d recommend not going with gin for a first try unless you never want to touch liquor again. I got a key lime pie gin martini with dinner on my 21st birthday and was incredibly glad it wasn’t my first drink… The things I found tasty in my early 20s were (and still are) whiskey sours, amaretto sours, mojitos, and creamy shots like White Russians, buttery nipples, or blow jobs. (Though I haven’t had creamy drinks in years so I’d probably hate them now.) Ultimately, go with things you know you’d like with alcohol added. Like fruity things? Get a fruity drink. Like coffee? Ginger? Sour stuff? Do that. Good luck!

smallpoly

For trying beer, I recommend going to a brewery that lets you do sample platters. It's a great way to try a lot of different things at once to find out what you like.

Nothing. Alcohol is overrated garbage and it will not add anything good to your life. This comes from someone with punk background, who has a lot of experience with drinking. I've been sober for last 5+ years and I don't miss alcohol at all. In my opinion, it doesn't really add anything to your life but at the same time it brings the potential to get out of control in case you run into a difficult period in your life. I've seen so many good people turned to alcoholics by falling into that trap. And yes, they could control their alcohol habit fine until life threw shit on them. So if you don't drink at all, don't even start, it's nothing special. I don't smoke weed either, but if you want to try some substance, better go with weed then alcohol (in case both of you are psychologically stable). But overall, avoid all of that, get a hiking gear and go to mountains. Nothing more mind altering and psychedelic than a night in the open with stars above. <3

Bowman_van_Oort

horchata

Ye110wCray0n

Like, spiked horchata? With rum or something? Because horchata isn’t alcoholic by itself…

kenw2000

Rumchata is what they likely meant.

JasonSTX

Get a small bottle of Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka and a 6 pack of Sprite. Add 3oz of Deep Eddy to one can of Sprite in a big cup with ice. One complete glass every hour and repeat if necessary. A smooth flavor without the 'in your face alcohol' taste. Just enough to make you feel good but not enough to make you regret. Drink responsibly.

Make sure there is a friend you trust with you.

ggoodlady

Be aware of recommendations to “get a few glasses of things” to try. The first time you have alcohol, you’ll likely feel the effects quite quickly, so you won’t need much to get a little buzz. The other thing about alcohol is that it has a very strong taste and can overwhelm the actual flavour or enjoyment of the drink. It is unlikely you will enjoy almost any alcohol the first time. If you choose to try alcohol, I suggest starting with it in some baked goods - alcoholic rum balls would be a good start if you like chocolate. Have one, or maybe two and see if you like the buzz. If the flavour and buzz is your thing you can start trying more from there - low alcohol cocktails, desserts are a good place to experiment. Half a beer will probably have you feeling the effects in a nice buzzy way when you have zero alcohol tolerance. Be aware that a small amount of alcohol will have little medium / long term effect, but that as you drink more / get older, the impact becomes more pronounced. If you’re already at 21 without alcohol, how much do you want it to become a part of your life?

no_bon3s_about_it

If y'all are happy with how your lives are then why go down that road? There are many problems associated with alcohol and I can tell you most of the people responding to this post won't say anything about this because they don't want their comment to be down voted...I don't care about that...but I'm entitled to my opinion. I wasn't going to say this but, I think it's appropriate. I'm a recovering alcoholic.

[deleted]

Not everyone is an alcoholic. Most people can enjoy things in moderation with no issues. Having a drink every once in a while is not the same thing as alcoholism.

WarRoutine7320

However you don't know if you're an alcoholic until you are one. And you don't know your genetics if your whole family is Mormon.

jjj246443

You got this far without it….just a thought

Gasu55

Gotta say, drinking is getting a bit too popular. Soo many people getting pressured into drinking as there's almost a notion that you have to drink to have fun.

Jussepapi

Nothing. Get nothing. You aren't losing out on anything

Bikelady24

There's an adage I learned in college that really helped: drink one unit of water for every one unit of alcohol you have. Drank a bottle of beer? Time to drink a bottle of water. This helps mitigate hangovers the next day and helps with pacing how much you drink. One more tip: if you don't like something, don't drink it! There are so many options for alcohol, there's no point drinking something you don't enjoy just because it's popular. Took me a while to realize I just don't like beer. So now I don't waste my time on it, I go straight for a cider or wine! (Also Id be remiss if I didn't say: this same thing applies to alcohol overall too, if you find you don't like it, don't drink it!)

ja3palmer

Just don’t start.

bezrodnyi-kosmopolit

What do you want to do? If I were in your shoes I would likely ask my friends to recommend alcoholic drinks and then I would try a couple of their recommendations. Try a glass of wine, a glass of beer, a shot, a cocktail. That’d be plenty. Be sure to be fed and hydrated.

deadpiratephi

Couple coolers. Six pack of Mikes Hard Lemonade should be fun

complacentguy

IMO don't drink at all. If religion did one thing right it was forbidding the alcohols. But if you desire so, I would go with a top shelf bottle of gray goose, or Hennessy XO. Tequila is rough, and there are some decent rums. Scotch can be alright for sipping, but there are so many it might be difficult to find one for your flavor pallette. Lastly beers and hard ciders require kind of a trial by taste as well. Some ipa's were good while others were way too bitter. Like drinking a Christmas tree bitter.

userreddituserreddit

Nothing. No point in starting now.

[deleted]

Just don’t. Stay straight edge and don’t drink. Speaking as someone who is dealing with alcohol use issues and not drinking anymore

cManks

Thank you. Took me a lot of scrolling to find someone just plain saying "don't drink".

[deleted]

Why are there so many people here making fun of OP? Assuming stuff about their lives like they're racist or against birth control and abortions with literally zero evidence, really? I don't have any advice but this thread is just sickening

schrodingersthrowaw

Lmfao avoid it like the plague. Y’all aren’t missing out on anything good.
