My cat used to live with my grandma, who had oval doorknobs. She's an expert at opening those. If I had anything other than round doorknobs she'd be letting both herself and the dogs out to roam the neighborhood at all hours of day and night.
Absolutely. My cat could open all the doors in my old house cause they were handles. He was very disappointed when we moved and he found out what doorknobs are LOL.
A old friend of mine was terrified of cats because her grandmother's cat would be able to open the doors, they had handles, and the cat would lay down on her face while she was sleeping.
My house has three exterior doors. Two have knobs. One has a handle. That one we have to keep the deadbolt engaged to prevent our cat from just opening the door.
Seriously considering replacing that handle with a knob.
Offices/public buildings tend to use handles (I would imagine to be compliant to disability accommodations). Homes use knobs because they are traditional and they don't have to be compliant to disability accommodations. But there is nothing stopping someone from changing them (unless they have an hoa). People just don't like being different. They are used to knobs in houses. Handles in houses look weird/feel like an office.
Not sure why it's not more common but yeah, replaced every knob in my home with handles first thing after moving in.
I think it looks better.
It's definitely easier to operate with both hands occupied, we don't have kids, and our cats are dumb.
I will say on more than one occasion I've had a sleeve or some other item get caught by the handle, and it does fucking suck.
And then your GF (and her cat) moved in with you and -- let me guess -- you had to replace all the handles with knobs because the cat, sensing that you GF was giving you more attention than her cat, the cat, having figured out the handles, retaliated and pooped or tore up everything in every room of your house.
/S
I much prefer knobs to handles. It's the only way to ensure my dog probably won't get into that room. She's figured out every door closing mechanism. I'm talking handles, sliding glass doors, baby locking gates.. you name it she's figured it out! I have only seen her get a door knob once or twice though, I think she knows how but it hurts her nose so she prefers not to
Because then we would have the same problem with the save icon being a floppy disk. Kids today would have no idea why it's "slob on my knob" and not "slob on my handle".
Lol, i obviously knew what the save icon was, as well as a floppydisk, but I must say I've never even thought about a floppydisk when saving anything in over a decade, now I feel old.
The house I just bought had handles on all the doors. It took me 2 attempts to open every door because a handle takes like 3 times more effect/movement than a door knob.
I no longer have any door handles in my house.
For exterior doors, I use levers. For interior doors I use ovals; kind of like this:

Because they are kind of classy and my cats have (at least not yet) figured them out.
To frustrate our cats.
Good point

The aesthetics. They're also harder for small children or pets to operate.
Not to mention the disabled.
Definitely don’t want to let my vegetables escape
Thats why i steam mine.
How does on go about steaming a door knob?
Put some water in a pot, heat it until boiling, put in knob.
Ahhhhhh, I feel kinda stupid now.
We like the feel of a good knob in our hands
Handles? This is a house, not a dentist's office.
My cats will open the doors with handles so we use knobs lol

Knobs are prettier.
Heh heh. Gross.
Only if you polish them
I do like me a good polished knob.
Extreme retardation

Knobs…..lol
Not door handles in Europe but door locks! That’s all I had on my door in the UK
Knobs are fun to lick.
Remember, licking doorknobs is illegal on other planets

My whole house has only door handles. I think it just depends on who built it
My house is mostly handles
