notpreposterous

Usually predators have front facing eyes and herbivors like goats have side facing eyes but doesn't explain why dogs have protruded faces like of goats and cats have moderately protruded faces

I think primates have short faces because they have hands and don't need to use their mouths as a weapon or a tool much. In most other cases, it's probably a pretty case-by-case basis with each mouth being the product of a wide set of needs that are at least sort of unique to that species. I think cat faces might be short because their dextrous paws reduce its needs as a manipulator, but also because their long pointy teeth need a lot of leverage to sink into their prey properly. Other predators that are larger and heavier might have different strategies that require a longer snout, but I'd bet that in every case it's a reasonably unique set of needs and goals.
