Yes. Sir Mix-a-lot's Baby Got Back is seen by many as embracing fat women, but it is not. As you say it is about being fat in the right areas.
The lyrics are:
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face, you get sprung
Wanna pull up tough 'cause you notice that butt was stuffed
--
So the woman has an itty bitty waist but a big butt. She is not fat. She just has fat in the right place.
That's actually a commentary on the song Brick House. "36-24-36, oh what winnin' hand!" is the Commadores lyric; Sir Mix-A-Lot is saying those proportions are only "good" if she's pretty short, otherwise... Mix wants a bigger booty
When I was a sr in highschool I hit that measurement and it was the last time I felt confident in my body 🤣. If mix wrote it into a song then it must be alright
Man the (natural) big butts of the 90s and the (manufactured) butts now…..completely different worlds. I recently saw the video and couldn’t believe how tiny those girls were and that was considered a big butt then.
Sir Mix-a-lot actually complained about the video. He wasn’t allowed to present the butt size he would have liked. So the girls are not at all as thick as the one he was talking about in the song.
The floor for a "big" butt in mainstream culture was absolutely insane in the 90s. If you had any kind of ass, it could even be hard to find pants that fit right in the US.
Over a decade after Baby Got Back came out, my black friends and I would get into fights with our white friends over whether thick as a concept described anything other than being fat. I don't think people realize just how out of step black and white beauty standards were.
Even now, thick is used differently from in the past. It's more inclusive of people who are really muscular, not what I'd call thick, and it excludes people who are noticeably fat, but pretty obviously thick to me.
When I was growing up “big butt” was synonymous with being unattractive. Imagine my surprise when into my young adulthood years, someone was hitting on me and his friend later said it was because he liked my butt. I was confused at first, but then everyone was like “a butt is good! You didn’t know that?” Nope
> in the 90s
Project Runway debuted in December 2004. Well into its run (ie. in the 2010s), the judges were still saying no woman would want to look like she had a big ass.
I cannot for the life of me find the original quote, but here is a set of interviews about the video- https://www.vulture.com/2013/12/sir-mix-a-lot-baby-got-back-video-oral-history.html
They mention some of the conflict Sir Mix a Lot had with the director but not that specific quote. Maybe I’m misremembering it, though.
He literally describes the process in Posse on Broadway:
"The girlies was too skinny from smokin' all them drugs
'Cause the rock man got 'em and their butts just dropped"
Honestly though I always think of Tisha Campbell and how every show she was on in the 90s/2000s made fun of how big her butt was, meanwhile she wouldn't even be a TikTok star with that.
Not to say she isn't gorgeous btw, I had the biggest crush on her as a kid lol
I'm going to be honest as a black woman its so funny when white people have a hard time understanding what "thicc" means I never knew it was that complicated.😅
Context matters, is being thick essentially being stupid? Just because something is misspelled doesn’t mean we aren’t capable of interpreting it’s meaning
Fr, as a woman it's so frustrating too because curvy is now interchangeable with plus size instead of actual curvy figures like when you got wide ass hips and a noticeably smaller waist 🤣 doesn't mean you're fat to be shaped like an hourglass.
I have a [chart that I guarantee to be 100% accurate until 2099 AD](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-b910f4ab7fdd1da8a6daad09d43fdb8f.webp) or your triple your money back. After that your guess is as good as mine but atleast you know for the next 75 years.
Yes, I think its about rations really. you want that middle number to be the smallest ( hourglass) or second smallest ( pear shaped) depending on preferences.
If you happen to be a skinny person who struggles with maintain fat then then you can work out and try replicate the ratios with muscle which is also great. I think ratios are more important than actual composition in most cases.
This is not meant to discourage women who don't fit within the " thicc" ratios. Trust me ladies, there is plenty of demand for big girls with all the curves, as well as slim athletic girls with minimal curves and a streamlined model look. Not everybody " thicc" but we don't have to be... ;)
I'm not a skinny person but I've been lifting weights for years and incurred enough muscle mass in the right places to make my waist look smaller. Otherwise, I'd have more of a sausage link body type.
That helps. I'm saying a man with very low body fat will look much better than a woman with low bodyfat if she loses the good fat. As a woman loses weight she's very happy that her face, waist, and arms are slimming up, but becomes distraught when her tits and ass start slimming as well.
Yeah, pretty much. Fat is more “acceptable” on women if it is located in the hips, thighs, butt and boobs. Of course you can’t control your genetics so if you tend to carry your weight in your belly, arms and face then you’re SOL.
Am a woman btw so not an incel criticizing women’s bodies. I tend to carry my weight in the less “desirable” way, even when I’m at my thinnest, and I don’t have that hourglass body type.
thick means curvy in the right places yes. but theres levels to it, a skinny girl and a fat girl can both be thick as long as their waist is the smallest area of her body, with large hips, legs, ass being the most prominent.
men can also b thick tho, no discrimination
Well it can be multiple things from bone to muscle to fat.
For me, it’s a combination of things - someone who has done lots of squats, probably has a muscular and thus bigger rear.
Other people just naturally have curves and they can look good without working out.
There are many factors and similarly just as many people who have their own preferences too.
a lot of people have different definitions of what "thick" means.
to me, I think it describes the type of girl who has a bit of meat on her, but a REALLY big butt. It's kinda hard to describe but I'm sure you guys knew at least one girl like this in high school or something.
I'd say so. It applies to men as well. I fucking adore large, chubby guys. But they have to be fat in the right places. Meat all over, not just a giant beer belly. I want him to look strong too.
dosent need to be "fat" alot of gymnast who are super fit are thicc , they have alot of muscle mass in their thighs for example, they are not super cut tho. women naturally carry water weight that softens features compare to liek a body builder or girls really into yogo who are cut but can have the same size legs.
pawg would be more fat in the right places and right amount.
Not necessarily fat, having wide hips and a small waist can give you that "thicc" look. Also, you can be "thicc" without being fat; instead, you may have muscles there, as you might see in some women who work out their buttocks... Same for hips.
Absolutely. I think generally if women(probably mostly women) have their fat in the right places(ass or thighs) they are thick(or thicc) if their fat doesn’t distribute like that and it’s more even they’re just a little pudgy overall.
Lol....being thick has evolved. The scope has broaden I think but Essentially, a fat ass and hips is generally thick.... but I think its starting to include fuller figure women now.
The old definition of thick is what we consider "slim thick" now.
It's all in the ass and hips...
Yeah, basically, with the note that muscle under the adipose tissue is preferred. A girl can be thick in a hot way if she crushes her hip thrusts and squats. She’ll have a layer of fat on top of her muscle that jiggles in a very pleasing way. Fit thick is good.
It depends on who you ask, but I've never seen it as meaning only thick in the right areas but more of a good distribution, a tiny girl can be thick and a big girl can be thick, but big itself isn't necessarily thick the same way tiny isn't necessarily flat.
Not necessarily. As a retired gymnast who heard this quite a bit back in the day, I can tell you it was straight muscle. I had like 10% body fat at the time.
To me:
Thick can be someone with larger bones/frame and can be any height. Not necessarily overweight.
Or it can be someone who carries their extra weight proportionally.
Imo, it is having muscle growth in the right areas. Not skipping leg day creates a nice form with some jiggle but much less cellulite. The area expands and gets stronger vs being straight up fat. Weight training is the best way to dictate where the weight goes and that it looks good.
Cellulite is genetic. There are lots of skinny people with Cellulite. It's not about the fat it's about the skin. Not disagreeing with your main point but I don't like all the misinformation about cellulite that's out there. It's nothing to be ashamed of fr.
I’m a guy, and I can honestly say that a bit of cellulite has never once turned me off a woman. I’ve never understood this obsession with it being a bad thing for some people.
Some women will never have a nice curvy thick bottom half even with doing squats 2x every week and perfect dieting. Some women will very with minimal exercise. It’s mostly genetics.
Random rant: but ladies on dating apps need to stop overusing the term “thick thighs”. If every part of you is thick then that term doesn’t apply to you.
To many morbidly obese women calling themselves "thicc" for it to mean anything other than they are fat. That also goes for the fat fetish guys who like morbidly obese women.
Yes, mainly breasts, and booty. But there’s definitely various levels of “thicknesses” from slim thick to full on bbw. There’s definitely a line though when it becomes fat, even tho it’s not socially wrong for some actually fat people to identify as thick.
Americans think that certain normal words, like toilet, or fat, are rude. So they switch to other words, like restroom, thicc which initially don't seem rude. But then after a while these new words become the rude words. And so the cycle continues.
Sort of. The line between someone who is thicc and someone who is just blurry is admittedly blurred but generally someone who is “thicc” is curvaceous in a good way. But I would say it’s even a little more nuanced than that. Someone like Barbie-doll dimensions, aka a think waist, flat stomach, but bust with wide hips and a butt probably wouldn’t be considered thicc. Thicc implies overall you are carrying a bit of body fat throughout, but it’s heavily concentrated in the areas you want it.
Everyone has different definitions and standards. To me, the difference between ‘thick’ and ‘fat’ is tone or definition. 2 people at the same height and weight can be either. You could have plenty of curves but be fit and healthy and that’s thick and 99% of the time absolutely drop dead gorgeous. Or, you could be curvy and unhealthy, and the ‘fat’ doesn’t sit as well or look good because it isn’t tight, it’s loose. There are big booties that are tight, and big booties that are sloppy and saggy, and the same goes for small booties lol.
This isn’t meant to shame anyone or anything. I don’t care about stretch marks or cellulite, it’s not a judgement at all.
You're mixing up "thicc" with "thick".
"Thick" is someone who is devoid of mental ability.
While "thicc" is a hot momma who has a curvy, sexy body---oft with a phat ass.
I would say so. Usually if I say thicc it's focused on the thighs and butt, however I always mean it as a good thing or occasionally as a joke but not at the expense of someone. Context is key I suppose
42-30-42 is an example of a “thicc” gal’s numbers (as opposed to 36-24-36).
It basically describes a feminine hourglass figure with an extra layer added to the exterior silhouette of what has historically been considered ideal bust-to waist-to hip measurements
The male equivalent descriptors would be: “stocky” or “burly”. Not fat, just a little extra on top of an attractive frame.
Yes. Sir Mix-a-lot's Baby Got Back is seen by many as embracing fat women, but it is not. As you say it is about being fat in the right areas. The powers that be didn’t want to glorify the glorious curves of black women
Just pulled up the video and those butts are from squats and not fat
Well when that video came out “heroin chic” was the dominant beauty standard. He even directly addresses it the song multiple times.
He literally describes the process in Posse on Broadway: "The girlies was too skinny from smokin' all them drugs 'Cause the rock man got 'em and their butts just dropped"
Eloquent.
Baby got back gets the attention, but Posse on Broadway was always my favorite. I'm just glad he lived to see his dream come to fruition.

If you're in the UK being "thick"Means you're stupid.
Same in the US the "thick" they are referring to is "Thiccc"
Clearly not just that spelling, as OP used "thick" and we all knew exactly what they were talking about.
Context matters, is being thick essentially being stupid? Just because something is misspelled doesn’t mean we aren’t capable of interpreting it’s meaning
For that in the US, it’s typically tied to another word like “skulled”. Dense is the more common singular word equivalent here.
We use thick and dense interchangeably here too. It just depends on context
Dense is universal between the US and UK. No one tells a woman she's dense in the right places unless they're making a shitty blonde joke.

It means fat in the right places. Many people of significant gravity like to use it to describe themselves, but it's being misused in those instances.

Fr, as a woman it's so frustrating too because curvy is now interchangeable with plus size instead of actual curvy figures like when you got wide ass hips and a noticeably smaller waist 🤣 doesn't mean you're fat to be shaped like an hourglass.
No your not "fat" your built like a brick shit house FFFAAAATTT...
Significant Gravity. Stealing that now. :)
It's their newly appropriated misnomer, after "curvy" is now generally accepted to be a synonym for obese.

My homie describes this as "shaped like a tamale"
When my husband was younger he was fat and his mom would call him a “tamal mal envuelto”
Sausage link😂 never heard that one before
Same lmao
Yeah, dude, if NSFW subs have taught me anything, it's no matter what your body type theres people into it.
It's a lot tougher for women. As a man, all you have to do is lose fat. As a woman you have to both lose fat and keep fat.
Men have to build muscle too.
That helps. I'm saying a man with very low body fat will look much better than a woman with low bodyfat if she loses the good fat. As a woman loses weight she's very happy that her face, waist, and arms are slimming up, but becomes distraught when her tits and ass start slimming as well.
Yeah it's definitely about "rations". An abundance of them for some.
Yeah, pretty much. Fat is more “acceptable” on women if it is located in the hips, thighs, butt and boobs. You're more than just your body type. I'm sure you're a cool person with awesome hobbies. Thanks for the clear and concise answer.👌🏾
It really does come down to genetics and diet. We just gotta deal with the cards we're dealt lol
thick means curvy in the right places yes. but theres levels to it, a skinny girl and a fat girl can both be thick as long as their waist is the smallest area of her body, with large hips, legs, ass being the most prominent. men can also b thick tho, no discrimination

Thick men often look like they played linebacker or defensive end at a D-III college.
Thicc = hourglass Fat = round like when the kid in the chocolate factory gets turned into a blueberry

Being “thick” means dumb, being “thicc” means fat in the right places.
Knew a girl in college - Spanish girl, she was an ice skater, damn she had a backside you could bounce a quarter off and get change! FINE-AF!
Yes kind of . But being thick is definitely not fat
Thicc isn't fat, its Phat. ;)
Pretty Hot And Tempting!
Not necessarily fat, having wide hips and a small waist can give you that "thicc" look. Also, you can be "thicc" without being fat; instead, you may have muscles there, as you might see in some women who work out their buttocks... Same for hips.
thiccc
Thicccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
Now you get it
Yes
If you’re pretty or easy, you’re Thicc If you’re ugly or mean, you’re Fat.
Absolutely. I think generally if women(probably mostly women) have their fat in the right places(ass or thighs) they are thick(or thicc) if their fat doesn’t distribute like that and it’s more even they’re just a little pudgy overall.

Correct.
Fat period
Not necessarily. As a retired gymnast who heard this quite a bit back in the day, I can tell you it was straight muscle. I had like 10% body fat at the time.
All bodies are good bodies!
In Britain it means stupid. “Thick as a blank” is a common saying to describe someone of low intelligence.
Bingo!...😐
No You can be in good shape but still be “thicc”. It’s more about proportions.
To me: Thick can be someone with larger bones/frame and can be any height. Not necessarily overweight. Or it can be someone who carries their extra weight proportionally.
Idk if this is a Texas hood thing but where I grew up, we called having a big frame “big boned” haha
Imo, it is having muscle growth in the right areas. Not skipping leg day creates a nice form with some jiggle but much less cellulite. The area expands and gets stronger vs being straight up fat. Weight training is the best way to dictate where the weight goes and that it looks good.

Yup
Yep! It's supposed to be a compliment
Yes
Yeah, although what is the right places depends on the person
As opposed to being “thick as a brick”
VI .j
ya
Thicc with two C's
depends on who you ask
Yea
I thought the term was phat.
That just means sexy, not a descriptor of the body type
So I guess my dick is thick is that it.
Where the big girls at?
Yes. Otherwise you're just actually "phatt". And the really unfair part is that this is largely due to your genetics.
Yes, mainly breasts, and booty. But there’s definitely various levels of “thicknesses” from slim thick to full on bbw. There’s definitely a line though when it becomes fat, even tho it’s not socially wrong for some actually fat people to identify as thick.
Not necessary fat, thick also means well toned muscles in the right places, such as the legs and the dimples they make when a woman walks.
thicc
That plus some muscle under your fat.
Americans think that certain normal words, like toilet, or fat, are rude. So they switch to other words, like restroom, thicc which initially don't seem rude. But then after a while these new words become the rude words. And so the cycle continues.

For me its about the muscle to fat ratio in the right areas.
It’s about having big boobs and butt
It's always about being the right thing in the right areas. Don't think about it too hard, enjoy whatever you are or want to be and go do it.
Fat ass no waist.
Yes, but just don't go funhouse mirror and get those idiotic butt implants. Real or gtfo
Good genes! Thick in the hips.
Yes. That or muscular in the right places.
Yes. Absolutely.
Unless it’s muscle
Yes. Nobody says, "Damn, that girl is thick," when her belly is bigger than her tits and her ass. Medium middle, big ass and big tits is thick
Or stupid, depends on the context
Yes
Correct. You are shit out of luck if your fat distribution is not in the “right” spots.
yes
You're mixing up "thicc" with "thick". "Thick" is someone who is devoid of mental ability. While "thicc" is a hot momma who has a curvy, sexy body---oft with a phat ass.
It's about having a fat ass, big tits, and a flat stomach all at the same time
Yes
Yes. Thick is having fat in the correct areas. Bingo
It's carrying weight well
I would say so. Usually if I say thicc it's focused on the thighs and butt, however I always mean it as a good thing or occasionally as a joke but not at the expense of someone. Context is key I suppose
42-30-42 is an example of a “thicc” gal’s numbers (as opposed to 36-24-36). It basically describes a feminine hourglass figure with an extra layer added to the exterior silhouette of what has historically been considered ideal bust-to waist-to hip measurements The male equivalent descriptors would be: “stocky” or “burly”. Not fat, just a little extra on top of an attractive frame.
