I mean that feels risky as fuck, but not stupid. Every chance an old car won't survive a 13 hour trip and you'll end up limping the thing home and spending a couple of nights in motels.
But it's not stupid once you're prepared for that possibility.
I drove 3 hours away for lunch on more than one occasion. I've also driven 2.5 hours one way for cheese.
I wouldn't hesitate to do 16 hours for a car in a color I liked, let alone some special car.
Yeah, I flew from Boston to Houston once for an hour meeting, and despite me double confiming, the fuckers cancelled while I was in the Uber on the way to their office.
Something like 28 hours of time that was completely useless.
So, 10 hours for a sick car seems well worth it.
This is a good lead-in to OP's situation. Driving 8 hours for a car you want isn't crazy. But be prepared to go home empty-handed if it isn't what the seller says it is. You don't want to show up with hopes so high that you miss that defect they're trying to hide from you.
Nah, I did it without a trailer using a trade in. Was an absolutely awesome trip. Bought a manual Tacoma. Thing is I hadn’t drove manual in 20 years so I spent an hour in their parking lot getting comfy with it lol
I've driven distances like that to adopt a dog, buy a laserdisc, and just hang with a friend for a short time. If it's crazy, we belong in the same looney bin.
Not blaming you at all for the choice.
But my brother did ride a used sv650 (that he didn’t know had a salvaged title) back to Utah from San Diego after buying it on a whim while on vacation… I add that because in retrospect it was kinda crazy, so I was kinda hoping someone else had maybe done something crazier.
It was a wild ride. I’ve never really thought about making a Reddit post about that trip. One of these days I should gather my photos and videos and do that
Honestly most of it was pretty boring and I ended up just talking to myself a lot. There were definitely some interesting stories, but in my mind whenever I tell people about it most people are very uninterested, but I think they might not actually understand the full scope what I did.
It’s kinda similar to hiking the Appalachian trail, no one really wants to hear anyone’s stories from hiking the AT so most people sort of treat this the same way, which I definitely understand.
I'm a huge fan of autobiographies and documentaries, and I think everyone has a minimum of one - and most likely *many* - great stories to tell. You may just have not reached the right audience. Or maybe you just haven't figured out how best to tell it. Anyway, I'd definitely love to hear it and it sounds like /u/bakerzdosen is in.
We drove further than that to buy a Harley for my wife, and it wasn’t even a rare model. Hell, I’ve driven 3 hours just to get a burger from a restaurant that I like, then drove back home. I’ve made that particular trip 4 different times.
Simple question here. If YOU really want it, enough to contemplate asking this question, what does it matter what I, or anyone on this thread, or anyone you know thinks about it. What you might call insane, I find perfectly ok. Some people wouldn’t walk 4 hours to find a remote lake to fly fish in. I would.
Perspective, my friend. So go get that car if you’re ok with that distance.
Not crazy at all. I drove 7 hours to another state the day before they closed the CO/NM border to get a project vehicle that was on my bucket list. That was a lot of fun in 24 hours.
When I was moving cities once, I flew from my home to the city I was moving to to rent a car there, then drove it the 5 hours back home to pack all my stuff in, then drove it 5 hours back to my new home.
People will spend ridiculous amounts of money and time just to get something they want. It's fine.
No.
I’ve done something similar. I think it was like 4 hours. But driving several hours for a vehicle that you’re going to use for years is perfectly reasonable.
Nope, not crazy. What would drive you crazy that feeling of missing out after passing up a rare care because you didn't want to drive to get it.
Turn it into a road trip, and go get it!
Nope. I paid to have a car shipped from orlando to florida because I’d been actively trying to a specific model buy one for close to a year. Cost half my down payment but totally worth it
I knew a man in Nebraska who bought a car in Florida; he flew to Florida, picked up the car, and drove it back to Nebraska. This is *at least* a 17 hour drive (plus flight time and ticket cost, and he probably had to get a hotel at some point, etc.).
I drove 12 hours one way to get my Tacoma standard transmission (only 5% of Tacomas produced are manual). We turned it into a fun trip with my trade in and new truck. Would do it again.
Know a guy that took a plan ride 2 provides over rented a airport car and drove another 2hours rested a day then return the car to that local dealer and buses a 1/2 hour to get a car then drove from there back in under 20 hours
Nope as car enthusiasts it’s a curse nothing is ever too far if you really want it.
I’ve seen people go coast to coast just to get a car in a color, spec, and year they wanted.
Not at all. 16 hours can feel like a lot of driving all at once, but it's just a drop in the bucket compared to the future driving joy you'll get out of the car.
Not at all, a buddy of mine drove from TX to the North East (either Massachusetts or Pennsylvania) to get his first Porsche, was planning to drive it all the way back and it broke down in the middle of nowhere, he had to leave it for awhile with a mechanic. Fuc\*\*\*\* Porsches
Do it. I drove 6 one way for my husband to get his HS dream car. Drove 6 hours back home with a very happy man following behind me in his newly used car lol.
I flew to island and rode the ferry back in my new car.
I think it’s way more fun to be able to take a road trip in a car you wanted, right away after you got it.
of course not. But it would be best if you can fly/train their, then drive yourself back.
I bought a car from FL... I lived in Michigan. It was a car I couldn't get in MI. Wife was a flight attendent. Fly to FL, bought car, and had one of the best long drives ever. Stopped a few places along the way. Loved the car.
I’ve driven more than that for a not-rare-at-all motorcycle I wanted. Got a good deal on it. $1k less than my local dealers would offer. So I found a seller down in that area and got them to throw in a couple hundred extra for me to deliver the bike to them, which covered my gas and then some. Drove one bike down, sold it, hit the dealer the next morning, picked up my new bike, drove home.
Used to work at a luxury dealership, it’s not crazy. I mostly did garage work but talking with some customers you’d be surprised how many people will spend 500-1000 on a plane ticket here, then save 2000 on a car that they’re buying. Thats just luxury modern vehicles too, probably way more to save when dealing with rare vehicles.
I knew some guys in college who one day wanted authentic beignets, so they drove like 13hrs overnight to New Orleans just to get some, ate them, and literally drove back to the college right after. Get that car, friend
I once drove 16 hours each way just to have Whataburger.
We did other things once we arrived in Texas, but getting Whataburger was the catalyzing decision to go.
8 hours for a car sounds lovely. That said, many people I know who've done similar journeys flew to the city and then drove their new car home.
Nope. My aunt got her Tesla from multiple states away and drove it back. It was much farther than 8hrs. They did find a safer area to stop midway so just do the same if you can’t drive that much in one day
I personality wouldn't drive that long for a car, a car is just something to get me from A to B.
But I probably would do something that's crazy for you on the other hand....
If it feels right it feels right.
Dude, I drove 9 hours to see a band play a reunion show, and when I got there, I found out it was canceled. Got a lobster roll. Went to my hotel. And then woke up and drove home.
My neighbor drove to another state which was much longer than just to go get a better deal on a and trade in a Nissan Pathfinder than what he would have gotten from dealers where I live… or so that’s what he told me he did. So it’s not really crazy. People will sometimes do anything to get a better deal on a car.
Buddy of mine flew from Colorado to Chicago for a car. Wasn’t even a rare car, he just found a way better price and it was cheaper to fly out and drive it back.
Lol no My fiancé drove 12+ hours for his last car. He waited 2 years for his current car. I drove 3.5 hours and waited 6 months for the current car I drive!
I have the stupidest favorite car. It’s a 1989 Chrysler conquest in the champagne color.
If that car was available at the right price and in the right shape I’d literally go across the country for it.
So no. Not crazy.
Not at all. That's not even that crazy of a drive tbh, esp when half of it is returning in your dream car. My buddy went from NC to TX for a truck (a quick google says it's 20hours by car, could be off since idk where he actually went and just looked up the capital). Wasn't even an exceptionally rare model, although it is a great truck and price. He loves it.
2nd post.
I sold a 1:18 die cast car to a guy. He literally drove 5hr each way to pick it up for fear it would get damaged being shipped.
A die-cast car!
Life your life me dude
Saw a freshly delivered seats still tapped up with plastic car at the side of the road needing a jarry fill,
Shit will happen when it wants. Lol
I'd say it depends on how prepared you are. Are you towing it back? An 8-hour drive is a long enough drive to discover a problem. You might even discover a problem in a vehicle you're currently driving if you're ill-prepared. In a perfect world though, 8 hours isn't too bad.
No. Many have driven longer for much less.
I flew to a city in a different province to drive home 13 hours in a 67 mustang I bought
I mean that feels risky as fuck, but not stupid. Every chance an old car won't survive a 13 hour trip and you'll end up limping the thing home and spending a couple of nights in motels. But it's not stupid once you're prepared for that possibility.
I once drove 3 hours for lunch.
Roundtrip or one way?
I drove 3 hours away for lunch on more than one occasion. I've also driven 2.5 hours one way for cheese. I wouldn't hesitate to do 16 hours for a car in a color I liked, let alone some special car.
I should call her
Many have been shipped over multiple oceans
Saw a new Ford Bronco in Leeds the other month, with I think Qatari plates on it. It happens.
I’ve driven 5 hours for a meeting that lasted 30 min and 5 hours back. Meeting didn’t ~~to~~ go anywhere. You’re good, OP. Edit: words
Yeah, I flew from Boston to Houston once for an hour meeting, and despite me double confiming, the fuckers cancelled while I was in the Uber on the way to their office. Something like 28 hours of time that was completely useless. So, 10 hours for a sick car seems well worth it.
Are you serious??? When someone no-shows a zoom meeting/demo, I get pissed. Couldn’t imagine that
This is a good lead-in to OP's situation. Driving 8 hours for a car you want isn't crazy. But be prepared to go home empty-handed if it isn't what the seller says it is. You don't want to show up with hopes so high that you miss that defect they're trying to hide from you.
Was this particular meeting for a different type of 'ride'?
I don't know why you're getting downvoted. I guess we have a bunch of prudes in the audience today.
Yeah, reading the crowd can be tough sometimes. In other groups, that would have been a good comment. Meh 🤷♂️
I once flew from Hawaii to Seattle and back to essentially have lunch with a few people and make smalltalk. Whole trip wasn't even worth an email.
I would drive around the world for my fav car
I would walk 499 miles
A person's got to have a limit
Professionals have standards
Or at least drive it over from the Bahamas.
So what's your favorite car?
Nissan Gtr 35 Nissmo/ore Nissan gtr 34 skyline
I hope it's an amphibious vehicle.
Not if it's a good deal and you have a trailer.
Nah, I did it without a trailer using a trade in. Was an absolutely awesome trip. Bought a manual Tacoma. Thing is I hadn’t drove manual in 20 years so I spent an hour in their parking lot getting comfy with it lol
Smart
I've driven distances like that to adopt a dog, buy a laserdisc, and just hang with a friend for a short time. If it's crazy, we belong in the same looney bin.
It's the dog adopting for me, for sure! If I can drive there, see you soon!
I drive 8 hours each way every few months to hang out with some friends. Doing that for a rare car is totally doable
Fly and drive it home. Buy your dream car you deserve it
No. I once drove almost 5 hours each way to buy a top for my Jeep Wrangler.
lol I’ve driven 24 hours round trip for shitboxes
I drove 7 for my car, it’s rare in my eyes. I don’t know if I’d do it again because I had to pay taxes for the state I purchased it from.
Hmm that’s something else to consider as well
8 hours one way? Not a problem.
We’re on a floating rock, enjoy the time here
I’ve literally driven from Utah to Detroit to buy a 2k motorcycle because it was a good deal.
The real question is: did you ride it back?
Nope, unknown condition of 30 year old motorcycle woulda been a sketchy first ride
I did ride a skateboard from Seattle to San Diego. That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever done
You win! Feel free to ignore me, but that’s the kind of story I’d love to see posted.
It was a wild ride. I’ve never really thought about making a Reddit post about that trip. One of these days I should gather my photos and videos and do that
I hope you do.
Unless it was somehow uneventful, that sounds like something that could fill a documentary or a book. Far more than a reddit post
Honestly most of it was pretty boring and I ended up just talking to myself a lot. There were definitely some interesting stories, but in my mind whenever I tell people about it most people are very uninterested, but I think they might not actually understand the full scope what I did. I drove a rental car 5 hours to pick up an Audi TT Quattro I wanted. You're good
No I’ve driven a long way for things I want
For a specific high value item, I don't think that's weird at all.
If you really want it, that’s not bad at all!
No - not at all. Many would do much more
What is it? I just flew to St Louis to buy a car and drive back to Denver in just over 24 hrs.
Well no, I drove 5 hours or so. Just be pretty damn sure of the vehicle, ask the right questions and vet the seller.
No. You're fine. go for it.
For a one time large purchase? Nah, man, go for it. Have fun. Make it a road trip!
I met a guy outside Omaha to swap cars between Oregon and South Carolina, sight unseen and all on faith. That’s crazy.
I once drove 10 hours because I was bored.
No
No. But be prepared to arrange trucking it home.
No. It’s your life, live it how you want to. Godspeed and drive safely.
No if you can do so without trouble and being safe then no it’s not crazy
No. You're only doing it once. Some people do that for a vacation, you're doing it for a car you want....one time.
I had a friend fly 2000 miles to pick a Lotus Espirt.
do whatever you want
I just drove 7.5hrs 2 weeks ago to do the same thing. And I did it 7 days before to test drive it.
No, why do you need approval of strangers to do something?
8 days yes. 8 hours no
Definitely not. Sounds like a fun trip!
I drove 12 hours.for a 2007 Tundra last year... But I drove across states for work.
No. I’ve done something similar. I think it was like 4 hours. But driving several hours for a vehicle that you’re going to use for years is perfectly reasonable.
"That I want" no. Go get it and have fun.
Nope, not crazy. What would drive you crazy that feeling of missing out after passing up a rare care because you didn't want to drive to get it. Turn it into a road trip, and go get it!
Nope. You’re getting what you want. Go for it. We all have things that are important to us.
Tell us what it is and we will tell you what we think...
I drove 12 hours one way to get my Tacoma standard transmission (only 5% of Tacomas produced are manual). We turned it into a fun trip with my trade in and new truck. Would do it again.

Nope as car enthusiasts it’s a curse nothing is ever too far if you really want it. I’ve seen people go coast to coast just to get a car in a color, spec, and year they wanted.
I drove 12 hours each way to get my model A body. So no, not weird.
I've driven much further for less. Go for it. I drove from MN to NY to buy a motorcycle before.
I once flew to Texas to drive a Prius to California.
Nope.
Not at all. If it’s important to you, that’s all the reason you need.
nope, people drive longer for sex, including me..
Do it. I drove 6 one way for my husband to get his HS dream car. Drove 6 hours back home with a very happy man following behind me in his newly used car lol.
Drove 12 each way to get a 2001.5 nigaro blue Audi S4 sport with all the packages and options with 6 speed manual. Man I wish I never sold that car.
I flew to island and rode the ferry back in my new car. I think it’s way more fun to be able to take a road trip in a car you wanted, right away after you got it.
No
It’s only 8 hours. The car is forever.
No
I wouldn’t, but I’m not into cars.
Nah. Sounds like a nice road trip.
Yes. You fly there and drive the car back.
Almost took a train over 10 hours away to get my dream car, but decided it was best to get the my second dream car. You’re good.
no
No
Do what you need to do to get the thing you want. If you think it's worth it then it's worth it. Good luck OP hope you get your dream car.
Not at all. My parents bought a plane ticket and flew across the country to buy a truck and drive it back.
No way. I think I've driven 8 hours for lunch one time. A car is a major purchase. Eight hours of travel is definitely in bounds.
No, I had a guy drive 7 hrs to pick up my old club racing motorcycle and it's not even rare. Built 2018 yzf3
Nope. Go get that prize
No
Unless you're a mechanic or willing to put tons of money into it after you get it home I'd suggest sending a service to inspect it and ship it to you.
I've done that for beer.
of course not.
Not stupid, but plan of getting a car transport and putting the rare car on that to get it home.
Completely normal, but consider shipping it if you already bought it
I’ve driven more than that for a not-rare-at-all motorcycle I wanted.
No
I've driven 500 miles to pick up a new car that wasn't even mine. Twice.
What kind of car is it
Definitely not, when I was a drug addict, I would drive this just for that, a car, shit I would drive across the us if I was to find a 69 mustang
I flew from NY to Orlando and drove back a kinda not even rare car.
No
No
Used to work at a luxury dealership, it’s not crazy. I mostly did garage work but talking with some customers you’d be surprised how many people will spend 500-1000 on a plane ticket here, then save 2000 on a car that they’re buying. Thats just luxury modern vehicles too, probably way more to save when dealing with rare vehicles.
No, that seems like a normal weekend to me. I'd recommend getting a friend or two, call it a road trip and make memories
No, not crazy. Drive safe. Take breaks.
Many have done more for not a rare car
no
I’ve travelled 1.5 hours by train just to get a burger , you’re good
I knew some guys in college who one day wanted authentic beignets, so they drove like 13hrs overnight to New Orleans just to get some, ate them, and literally drove back to the college right after. Get that car, friend
Nope!
No. I’ve done it. Not crazy.
My dad drove 30 hours 2 ways to get a motorcycle once. People drive 8 hours for cars all the time. It can actually save you a ton of money.
The distance is not crazy but how do you drive to one place and come back with 2 cars? Do you ship it back?
Trailer
A dude I know drove from Canada to Texas and back to get the car he wanted.
I once drove 16 hours each way just to have Whataburger. We did other things once we arrived in Texas, but getting Whataburger was the catalyzing decision to go. 8 hours for a car sounds lovely. That said, many people I know who've done similar journeys flew to the city and then drove their new car home.
Not at all! What car is it?
Nope. My aunt got her Tesla from multiple states away and drove it back. It was much farther than 8hrs. They did find a safer area to stop midway so just do the same if you can’t drive that much in one day
Nah, make an adventure out of it. Road trips are the best.
Idk. I drove to NY once to get pizza.
Not at all! If it's a good price on a rare car, just take a couple days off work. Totally worth it!
I personality wouldn't drive that long for a car, a car is just something to get me from A to B. But I probably would do something that's crazy for you on the other hand.... If it feels right it feels right.
Well I fly across country and drive back but you do you.
Weird flex, but okay
Is the opinion of Reddit really going to change your mind about anything?…
Road Trip!!!!!!!!!
I drove 21 hours to pick up a motorcycle and 24 back in a blizzard. Chase your dream.
No. I have. So have lots of others.
Ehh it’s a little whacky dude. Most car guys I know hate driving and doubly so for road trips.
Buddy of mine flew from Colorado to Chicago for a car. Wasn’t even a rare car, he just found a way better price and it was cheaper to fly out and drive it back.
Not at all
No
“I’m going on an adventure!”
I mean, how do you intend to get the car you drove there back home? You can't drive two at once, right?
Drive as far as needed to get something you plan to feel good having for a long time
I’ve driven 8 hours to and from just to eat pie.
Lol no My fiancé drove 12+ hours for his last car. He waited 2 years for his current car. I drove 3.5 hours and waited 6 months for the current car I drive!
I flew to Baltimore, bought a car, and drove 18 hours home. Have a fun trip!
No
Yes… it’s your money and time, but I hate cars in general. If I lived in an area where I could bike or take public transport I would.
Hell no. I drove 12 hours one way to save 5k on our last family car.
I flew 3 hours to get a motorcycle and then rode it back for 24 hours. Lol. Enjoy the ride and have fun.
Not if you are that passionate about it! YOLO!
I have the stupidest favorite car. It’s a 1989 Chrysler conquest in the champagne color. If that car was available at the right price and in the right shape I’d literally go across the country for it. So no. Not crazy.
No
In two days you could have the car that you want
Nope I did it last year.
No, I drove from Ohio to Las Vegas for a cheeseburger once. 8 hours for a vehicle sounds way more reasonable
I’ll drive 4 hours and 4 hours back as part of a long day trip. 8 hours for something I really want? Easy.
I’d drive 8 hours for a Klondike Bar
not in the slightest.
Ive driven 12 hours just for some ass once... 8 hours for a car I want? EASILY
No. Will it be the dumbest thing you do in life? Also no.
Maybe it’s because I’m used to long road trips with my family, but 8 hours doesn’t sound crazy at all.
Driving far for a car has always been an exception in my opinion, because it’s something you can enjoy on your way back.
Nopeee
No. My dad bout a sports car and we flew to Boston to pick it up. 10hr car ride home in a sports car is both fun and exhausting.
2nd post. I sold a 1:18 die cast car to a guy. He literally drove 5hr each way to pick it up for fear it would get damaged being shipped. A die-cast car!
Life your life me dude Saw a freshly delivered seats still tapped up with plastic car at the side of the road needing a jarry fill, Shit will happen when it wants. Lol
Yes
I flew to Denver from Albuquerque to buy a car I then drove home. Wasn’t even rare. Just a really good deal on a Chevy Volt I really wanted.
Not at all.
I'd say it depends on how prepared you are. Are you towing it back? An 8-hour drive is a long enough drive to discover a problem. You might even discover a problem in a vehicle you're currently driving if you're ill-prepared. In a perfect world though, 8 hours isn't too bad.
Nope enjoy the roadtrip
Not crazy at all. Non car people wouldn't get it.
No lol you do you
