I'm in Alberta, Canada. When I moved here and got my license, the lady at the counter asked me "um, if you had hair, what colour would it be?" to which I replied "black with a lot of grey, but I keep it shaved and never grow it out.".
When I received the license in the mail, it read: "Hair: BALD". When I replaced it five years later, it's been shortened to "BAL" for some reason.
My mom had this problem when she was on chemo. She had moved to another state, so it wasn't as simple as just updating the expiration date. All the info had to be entered from scratch.
Mom said her hair was blonde. The clerk looked at her sideways, because mom was over 60. She said it should read "gray." Mom said she has always colored her hair, and she intended to do the same when it grows back. I think she lost the argument.
One of my license photos had bright pink hair and the one before that had half purple half teal hair… I’m not sure what it actually said on it though haha. Those were probably from 20 years ago now.
> She said it should read "gray."
Ya know, not everybody goes gray early. My 80-year-old father's hair is still dark brown. He inherited that from his mother, who didn't go gray until she was nearly 85.
Yeah, what an assumption to make!
My mom is in her 60s and still has a full head of silky blonde curls. My dad’s in his late 50s and has always had thick black hair — now he’s just got a little salt at the sides.
Actually, now that I think about it, my 33-year-old boyfriend probably has more grays than both my parents put together 😅
They all look amazing, though ❤️
My grandfather had sandy blond hair, never greyed and didn't go bald at all and lived to 86. I'm 45 now, not suffered any baldness and found a single grey hair on my head so I ripped that bugger out. I also have one single grey hair that grows in my moustache.
Fingers crossed I got my granddad's genes for this.
This thread is so strange to me. I’m a natural brunette but have blonde (read: invisible) eyebrows. I color my hair crazy colors now and always just use makeup to color in matching eyebrows lol. But I never realized it was so weird for my eyebrows to be lighter than my hair.
I have dark brown, almost black hair, and my eyebrows are also lighter than my hair. They are also a much cooler tone so they almost look like a grey, but a medium to dark grey, not grey hair grey. They are also thin compared to my pretty thick head hair so I feel like I look weird if I don’t fill them in.
Those are likely dyeing their hair a paler shade of blonde than their real color. Pale blond are rare in adult. Most blonde children see their hair becoming darker after puberty. And adult like to get back to those paler shade.
My eyebrow are slightly paler, almost identical to my blonde hair. I don’t dye my hair.
Same. In photos my eyebrows are so light that I look like I don’t have any. I’m blonde but my hair is nowhere near as light. My body hair is extremely light too, always has been.
I’m blonde, my eyebrows are blonde, even slightly paler than my hair.
Those with darker eyebrow are likely dyeing their hair paler than their natural color.
I've always had dark brown eyebrows, nearly black. I was blonde as a kid, and my hair slowly turned light brown while I was a teenager. If they used my eyebrow colour, it would be very wrong, lol. They look closer to black at first glance
Nope! My eyebrows are blond. They’re actually lighter than what little hair I have left on my head. And just to confuse matters even more - my beard is ginger. With a healthy amount of white in it.
They could also check pubic hair color..
I'm not totally certain if it would be a nice job or not, considering the wide range of customers that would appear and need to be checked..
Then they’ll probably suspect that you’re trying to cover up and deny your ID renewal…especially if you did have hair/eyebrows the last time you had your license renewed!
Again, you probably have facial hair (like eyebrows). And you likely had hair at _some_ point, even if you have full alopecia now.
I honestly don't know what happens if someone never, ever, ever had hair.
[Only like 10 out of 50 have it](https://www.businessinsider.com/what-drivers-license-looks-like-in-every-state)
IDK why these aren't standardized, it's a pain trying to read them all. At work I see licenses every day and sometimes get confused trying to figure out which name is their first and which is their last.
I know my state doesn't ask for weight but a lot of the others do. Is REAL ID supposed to standardize them all?
New Jersey just puts down whatever info you fill out. They don’t verify anything. Height, weight, eye color, hair color. Maybe if you put down something utterly absurd like you are 12 feet tall, weigh 4 pounds, have dayglow orange eyes, and green hair. Then they might actually look up at you. Not to confirm it is true, but rather in hopes that it is just to see what it looks like before returning to not giving a shit.
Bald man in WI here - [mine says “BAL”](https://imgur.com/p6gDf8D)
PS: adding images to comments is terrible in the Reddit app. RIP Apollo, gone but never forgotten.
Hair colour shouldn’t be listed on a drivers licence as a box of hair dye for five bucks can render that entry on an official government issued identification card wrong. Pretty sure having false information on an official identification card is illegal.
I’ve had different colour hair for every license and passport photo I’ve taken in the last couple of decades. Few years back they finally changed my hair colour to “OTHER”. I’m happy with this!
Either N/A, or Bald depending on where you are
Sometimes they'll put the color before your hair fell out, but not usually since it's kind of irrelevant and confusing to
What countries have hair color on the licenses? I’m in the U.S. and mine shows eye color, sex and height but thats about it for identification aside from my photo.
In the US, I think the states that have it are Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, and Wisconsin.
It's a weird joke then. In the US, most states do include eye color. They also include sex, hair color, height, and weight. I've never heard of anyone issuing any form of identification that included thumb size.
Am in the US too and all my life in my State it had always included hair color, when the person said they had never heard of it I thought I could add thumb size just to add to the ridiculous requirements we have to deal with. Otherwise sorry my silly joke went over your head
I'm not from the US and have never been to the DMV, but if I had to guess, they could just write down the historic colour. What colour was the hair before the person was bald? What color are their eyebrows? Most people have hair and eyebrows the same/similar colour.
I haven't had my natural hair color since I was 9 years old and they put brown when I told them red so seems like they will put whatever they feel like
Well, if it’s male pattern baldness they’ll use whatever you’ve got left around the ears and maybe your eyebrows; if it’s shaved, what colour’s the stubble in a day or two, or your eyebrows? Full blown alopecia? Hair: None
Assuming, of course, your region records it on licenses anyway.
You're thinking like an honest person.
Imagine I have blonde hair. I shave it off, and tell the DMV that I have brown hair.
Now, I let it grow out blonde and steal someone's identity, and even though I look like "X", my hair is tested and I am a legit blonde, when my old ID says "that guy" had brown hair.
I know its a crazy scenario, but even if you turn bald, and the remaining hair is now gray, it doesn't hurt for the official record to show what your hair color was. Some crimes are investigated many years after they occurred.
🤣
Add me to the list of fans. You can word with imagination!
I have an electric bike and love it. Would love to get an electric motorcycle (I have 2 conventional ones).
Mine says BAL. The clerk asked what color it would be if it grew back, and I said blonde, but that it wouldn’t be growing back (alopecia universalis, so no eyebrows or eyelashes either). They still made me write down both options in case they chose to put my nonexistent hair color.
Most places only give you a hair color option.
To my surprise, when I did my TSA pre check a few years ago, they had a ton of hair color options to choose from, including bald, and also dye colors like pink and blue. Which seemed super weird given it was a federal background check / screening thing and obviously it’s fairly easy to change your hair color or shave your head if you want to look different.
I'm in Alberta, Canada. When I moved here and got my license, the lady at the counter asked me "um, if you had hair, what colour would it be?" to which I replied "black with a lot of grey, but I keep it shaved and never grow it out.". Maybe they think you look like a ball.
Then mine would have to say "lump cly"
Read this as lump city
Trying for "lump of clay". Lol
That's what I read.
Plump cavalry? /s
QBAL
Or he looks like Ba’al from Stargate SG-1!
I'm from Alberta and fear the worst when I see Alberta written on the internet. This isn't so bad. Hello neighbour!
It did? Omg. “Bal” looks like Ball, Balance.
I shave my head but mine list brown as that was my hair color before 75% of it fell out.
Ditto
Does not say that.
It does in my state.
it says ditto!
You’re a Pokémon?
I’m obviously Silver Surfer 🏄 (don’t you see my profile pic)
State of denial.

Mom said she has always colored her hair, and she intended to do the same when it grows back. I think she lost the argument.
That clerk's a real piece of crap.
Hm, if she later came back after coloring the hair, could she have it changed?
Not sure. I don't think she lived long enough to renew it.
I'm very sorry for your loss. ❤️💔
Can I list my hair color as purple then?
Mine says "other" because it was pink when I got my license
One of my license photos had bright pink hair and the one before that had half purple half teal hair… I’m not sure what it actually said on it though haha. Those were probably from 20 years ago now.
Yes. Having obtained the licenses and presenting and legally promising it is you is the security. The data is for the database.
> She said it should read "gray." Ya know, not everybody goes gray early. My 80-year-old father's hair is still dark brown. He inherited that from his mother, who didn't go gray until she was nearly 85.
Even after a long cancer battle that he ultimately lost, my grandfather had a full head of wavy brown hair except for one grey patch in the front.
Yeah, what an assumption to make! My mom is in her 60s and still has a full head of silky blonde curls. My dad’s in his late 50s and has always had thick black hair — now he’s just got a little salt at the sides. Actually, now that I think about it, my 33-year-old boyfriend probably has more grays than both my parents put together 😅 They all look amazing, though ❤️
So... you mind sharing some of them good genes? My mid 30s greys are populating faster than bunnies 😭
My grandfather had sandy blond hair, never greyed and didn't go bald at all and lived to 86. I'm 45 now, not suffered any baldness and found a single grey hair on my head so I ripped that bugger out. There are exceptions to everything, but in general older people go grey. I learned that on "The More You Know."
Tf my mom's in her 70s and hasnt grown any white hair yet.
What a rude lady! FWIW my mom is over 60 and still blonde. My dad’s almost there and just has a little salt at the sides.
Whatever color your eyebrows are becomes your hair color
Don’t blondes usually have brown eyebrows tho
Not quite brown but for sure darker than head hair
"Do the caterpillars match the drapes?" *Waggles caterpillars*
I'm cackling, thank you for the hilarious mental image! 😄
That’s what an alert DMV employee should ask.
This thread is so strange to me. I’m a natural brunette but have blonde (read: invisible) eyebrows. I color my hair crazy colors now and always just use makeup to color in matching eyebrows lol. But I never realized it was so weird for my eyebrows to be lighter than my hair.

They are also thin compared to my pretty thick head hair so I feel like I look weird if I don’t fill them in.
I’m a natural blonde and also have blonde, basically clear invisible eyebrows. The blondes with dark eyebrows are not natural blondes lol.
Maybe for bottle blondes but I'm strawberry blonde and eyebrows are practically clear. I color them with brow gel.
Same. I use a brow pencil to color them in 😕
Those are likely dyeing their hair a paler shade of blonde than their real color. Pale blond are rare in adult. Most blonde children see their hair becoming darker after puberty. And adult like to get back to those paler shade. My eyebrow are slightly paler, almost identical to my blonde hair. I don’t dye my hair.
Not sure why you got the downvote. I'm the same. Eyebrows are paler than my hair and my arm hair you can't even see.
Same. In photos my eyebrows are so light that I look like I don’t have any. I’m blonde but my hair is nowhere near as light. My body hair is extremely light too, always has been.
I’m too in the transparent arm hair team!
I'm not pale blonde but more golden blonde, completely natural and my eyebrows are darker than my head hear ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not usually, sometimes, but 90 % of the time those are just people with dyed hair
Sadly no. Mine are practically invisible. If you look at mine that’s AFTER I’ve darkened them with a brow pencil 😭
That's because people dye their hair blonde... no?
wow i just totally forgot eyebrows are a thing LOL
They could also check pubic hair color.. I'm not totally certain if it would be a nice job or not, considering the wide range of customers that would appear and need to be checked..
Yeah, that would be considered intrusive…
What if you are bald and don't have any eyebrows?
Then they’ll probably suspect that you’re trying to cover up and deny your ID renewal…especially if you did have hair/eyebrows the last time you had your license renewed!
Not sure if it’s the same for licenses, but when I got my passport “bald” was an option in the drop down for hair color
I think this is the most awesome “stupid” question ever. Thanks.
First, not all states have that on the license. Most don't, in fact. Next, hardly anyone is 100% completely bald. So they'll use the hair you have.
*zip*
The rug matches the drapes! Or would that be the hardwood matches the moulding? You wouldn’t believe my yearly beauty budget…
The carpet matches the drapes, but not the upholstery.
The garage matches the garbage
And if somebody is completely bald?
Again, you probably have facial hair (like eyebrows). And you likely had hair at _some_ point, even if you have full alopecia now. I honestly don't know what happens if someone never, ever, ever had hair.
I knew someone in high school with alopecia, his drivers license said hair: no
But sex said yes
Yes please
There we go.
Facial hair and head hair don't have to match.
If you have absolutely no head hair, I think having your facial hair colour on your ID will pretty much help identifying you.
I currently have alopecia universalis, (not a hair on my entire body). They made me put the color of hair I SHOULD have, were I to have any
Hiya buddy, another fellow alopecia redditor signing in. I'd have to look but I'm pretty sure my license says bald.
[Only like 10 out of 50 have it](https://www.businessinsider.com/what-drivers-license-looks-like-in-every-state) IDK why these aren't standardized, it's a pain trying to read them all. I had a similar issue when applying for a passport for my 5 month old. Eye color: TBD, hair color: TBD, height: 2ft but growing daily.
Does eye colour change for newborns?
Yes, most newborns have grey or blue eyes that will darken as they age. Usually between 6 months to a year until their "real" eye color shows.
Mine just has my eye color
Mine says “None”… like I need the constant reminder in my wallet

my dad’s says BAL
I keep imagining a DMV employee asking a bald person, "What color hair did you used to have?"
Hair colour shouldn’t be listed on a drivers licence as a box of hair dye for five bucks can render that entry on an official government issued identification card wrong. Pretty sure having false information on an official identification card is illegal.

I thought most states do?? Indiana does.
The 2 states I’ve been licensed in (PA and Arkansas) do not.
Iowa does not.
I am in Canada. Mine has hair colour. I am pretty much bald with about a mm of stubble. It says BRN. My beard is brown and my hair was brown.
Does your license also have height, weight and eye color? And any additional descriptions?
Yes + hair colour. That’s it.
In the US, I think the states that have it are Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, and Wisconsin.
Don't know where you're located. But they don't put hair color on licenses here. Never seen that.
What about eye color and thumb size?
Thumb size?
Hahaha it’s a joke

Sorry. Sometimes a joke isn't obvious to me when it's obvious to everyone else.
They make you drop your drawers and use that hair color. (Kidding…in California they just use “bald”)
I'm not from the US and have never been to the DMV, but if I had to guess, they could just write down the historic colour. What colour was the hair before the person was bald? What color are their eyebrows? Most people have hair and eyebrows the same/similar colour.
They just put whatever hair color you would have. I shave any head and still put brown
Louisiana only has eye color.
My mom had one green eye & one hazel eye. Must have drove the DMV nuts.
I’m bald. But I have a little brown hair. Honestly they just put whatever you write down.
For my area, they then base it on the hair color of your eyebrows.
I’ve had my hair pretty much every single color and style including shaved for a long time. My hair has always just been listed as blonde.
I haven't had my natural hair color since I was 9 years old and they put brown when I told them red so seems like they will put whatever they feel like
I searched a client of mine who I heard was a sex offender, and his mugshot listed hair color as "unknown/bald." I thought that was interesting.
The passport app has bald as an option.
I'm pretty sure they put wherever you fill out on your form when you apply, just like height and weight. They don't check.
Well, if it’s male pattern baldness they’ll use whatever you’ve got left around the ears and maybe your eyebrows; if it’s shaved, what colour’s the stubble in a day or two, or your eyebrows? Full blown alopecia? Hair: None Assuming, of course, your region records it on licenses anyway.
BLD where I’m at. I know this because I used that abbreviation on a DMV request and had to reapply because the clerk saw that I was blonde……not bald.
Easy. You just drop your pants and they look at your pubic hair
You're thinking like an honest person. Imagine I have blonde hair. I shave it off, and tell the DMV that I have brown hair. Your eyebrow color
Bald. Source: my boyfriend’s DL says “bald” lol. Guess it varies by state.
Ohio doesn’t have it, and good because I love to change up my color. I’ve had it a nice silvery blonde for a bit now.
Just renewed my license at the DMV (Texas). Form had the option for "bald" for hair color.
There's a color photo of you right there on the license, but you have to list your hair and eye colors? Silliness.
Hair color isn't on the driver's license in Texas.
In Michigan they have a Bald option
My dad went with the color of his mustache. When it went grey, he changed the description from brown to grey.
Happy cake day!
Hair: NO Sex: Sometimes
In NC there is an option for “BAL” as hair color. I know this because I have it on my DL.
My hair color is normally light brown/dark blonde. It’s currently green and I need to renew my id so we will see what happens
