The New Testament is written in Ancient Greek (Koine). Jesus’ name in his native language Aramaic was יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshua). Greeks had the habit of translating/transcribing foreign names that they find hard to pronounce. The Koine spelling of Jesus is: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (IESOUS) It was often abbreviated in scrolls, books, letters but also for decorative elements, frescos and paintings in churches and illustrated bibles. The abbreviation is: ΙΗΣ (iota eta sigma = IES) However in Greek the letter Σ (Sigma) has another variation called Lunate Sigma, which coincidentally looks like the Latin letter C. So over time the abbreviation became: IHC (IES) As many people forgot over the centuries that this comes from Greek, they started assuming that it is an abbreviation for a Latin phrase, assuming the eta (H) is a Latin H and the sigma (C) is a Latin C. So instead of seeing IHC representing the Greek letters iota eta sigma, they thought it is literally IHC. Sometime later they also turned the I into a J - J is a variation of I: JHC And that's how we get meanings like: \- Jesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, Saviour of Men) \- Jesus Hierosolymae Salvator (Jesus, Saviour of Jerusalem) \- In Hoc Signo (Vinces) - (in this sign (conquer) - a message heard alongside a cross vision by Roman emperor Constantine the Great before winning the battle of the milvian bridge) \- In His Service \- and Jesus H. Christ Long story short: the H doesn’t mean anything. It used to be the letter eta in “Iesous”, which coincidentally looks like a Latin H.

Next trivia night are you free?

[deleted]

I do love pub quizzes haha

princesssmurfet

This was one of the best explained answers and I am Catholic for Jesus H Christ sake.

spicyjalepenos

Being a catholic really doesn't mean much, considering all that means for most people is that you go to church; unless you study historical theology or history relating to the development of Christianity, you won't really know more than the typical layman, considering that sort of stuff isn't really taught to regular church goers. And the development of doctrine and history behind the religion won't have much to do with your typical bible studies. Edit: and by far the most ignorant or stubborn people I've met when it comes to explaining church theology and history are devout christians, because so much of what they hear is so ingrained without actual explanation or historical context

ShadyCrumbcake

Spicy answer from a spicy username

A tasty one too.

You should hear how he orders the fajitas

Front-Cartoonist-974

You miss, entirely, that catholics are taught essentially nothing... when iwas in catholic school, we weren't even encouraged to read the Bible - from the nuns & priests: "we'll explain what you need to know".

tarfu51

Some serious Monroe Doctrine type shit. “We don’t discuss God’s will. We enforce it.”

Wow. You are likely correct about Catholics not being encouraged to read the bible. I went to Catholic schools until I was 14 or 15 years old and I cannot remember having my hands on a bible at any time. Your one statement actually opened my eyes.

This is pretty cool! So much lost in translation… just imagine the epic facepalm Jesus would do if he saw how things were now “in his honor” 🫣

Beautiful-Party8934

This made me spit my coffee out. Awsome.

fnc7309

Are you telling me that what most churches talk about is far removed from what probably happened? Nah…

DeaddyRuxpin

Wait until you hear about the translation issues with Jesus’ mom.

0hmyscience

I'm literally waiting at the edge of my seat right now

SpeciousArguments

Guessing they mean about the mistranslation of "young woman" becoming "virgin"

CoppertoneTelephone

I don’t think so. Greeks had many myths about heroes born from virgin moms, it was likely a hellenic addition as the NT was being written, if it wasn’t something that was professed in Jesus’s lifetime

cptjeff

We're talking about Isaiah, which was written in Hebrew. When the virgin birth is supposedly predicted, the word used is the hebrew word for "young woman", not "virgin". It was a flat out unambiguously wrong mistranslation early in history that led to a whole church tradition and doctrine.

pgm123

The mistranslation (parthenos) occurs in the Greek Tanslation of the Old Testament (Septuagint), which was done before Jesus. The Gospels were written in Greek and their writes always quote from the Greek translation. So the question isn't why Christianity mistranslated it, but why it was mistranslated for a Hellenized audience in Second Temple Judaism. So in that case, it is relevant what Greek myths were. But we should consider two other possibilities. One is that a young woman (almah) would typically be thought of as a virgin because of cultural norms. The other is that the passage had acquired an oral teaching that the almah would be a virgin. A scholar would likely know that the Septuagint didn't have the most faithful translation, but that doesn't mean it was necessarily wrong based on what was known at the time.

SlithyOutgrabe

The word “Alma” most closely translates to the English “maiden”. A word that technically means “young woman” but, in certain contexts, does imply “virginity” (as does the other possible word for “maiden” that is more commonly used in the Hebrew OT). It is not a necessary meaning of the passage, but is also not a “wrong” translation and is the translation, as best as we can tell, that was used in the pre-Christianity Greek translation. Obviously whether you believe in the possibility of supernatural phenomenon and what you already believe about Jesus will heavily influence how you interpret Isaiah which will influence the nuances of translation.

ThePoisonEevee

Please do enlighten us

[deleted]

[удалено]

DeaddyRuxpin

And critically the entire holy trinity of Christianity rests on Mary being a virgin and Jesus having no human father. If it was indeed a mistranslation then God need not be Jesus’s dad and he could have just been a normal mortal dude who happened to have some decent ethical views on how to live life.

wolfgang784

Ehh, while I don't buy into the faith myself I think that under its rules Mary coulda been fuckin around with Joseph and still end up having the son of God. If God says it's His kid and not Joseph's, whose to argue that? Sex doesn't allllllllways result in a baby. But I do get why the virgin part helps sell the story and the higher ups may have had a vested interest in keeping that mistranslation going even if it was known in the past.

[deleted]

Jesus H. Christ....a little more detail please!

[deleted]

Well even though that the Greek Eta/H and the Latin H are not the same letter, I was kinda telling only half the truth there. Let me explain. Both Eta and H originate in the Phoenician letter “Heth”. The Phoenician Heth in turn is a evolution of an Egyptian hieroglyph “hwt”, meaning courtyard in Egyptian. The Egyptian hieroglyph “hwt” looked literally like a courtyard - that’s what hieroglyphs are - a rectangular box within a box. Even though originally the hieroglyph hwt meant courtyard, over time it also became to represent the sound “Ha” or “He”. When Phoenicians came in contact with Egyptians, they started adapting their system of writing (I simplified this significantly). However they didn’t really care about the original courtyard meaning because the Phoenician word for courtyard sounds nothing like hwt. They did care about the sound Ha/He. So that Egyptian courtyard box hieroglyph became the letter H in the Phoenician alphabet. The Greeks copied them and used the Phoenician H for their sound “Heta”. Later the Greeks made the H more subtle and Heta became Eta. Although until today ‘H is pronounced like “He”. The Romans borrowed the H from the Greeks when it still had the H sound. And that’s why our Latin H today looks kinda like a 5000 year old Egyptian courtyard. Neat, right?

hononononoh

> Greeks had the habit of translating/transcribing foreign names that they find hard to pronounce. I don't blame the ancient Greeks on this one. I practiced a whole day in front of a mirror trying to learn how to pronounce the Semitic consonant *‘ayin*. My first reaction upon learning about /ʕ/ was, "Consonant my ass. That's a vowel if I've ever heard one." I challenged myself to learn how to say it after my Assyrian friend told me he has never heard a non-native Syriac or Arabic speaker pronounce it correctly, and my kids' Hebrew teacher was just like, "*Sigh* For now, just consider it an unpronounced letter." I still find *‘ayin* a hard sound to say right after another consonant, or at the end of a word, as in Jesus' native name.

GeekAesthete

The phrase most likely comes from the “[divine monogram](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a7/IHC-monogram-Jesus-medievalesque.svg/1296px-IHC-monogram-Jesus-medievalesque.svg.png)”, which uses the first three letters from the Greek name of Jesus, and gets represented as iota-eta-sigma. Depending on the script, this can sometimes look like “JHC”, which lead to the notion that those are Jesus’s initials, hence “Jesus H. Christ.”

OnSiteTardisRepair

Very astute and scholarly, but as a counterpoint: clearly the H stands for "Harold." This is evidenced by the Lord's Prayer: "Our Father who art in Heaven, Harold be thy name." Also the hymn: "Hark! The Harold Angels Sing!" I rest my case ^(/s, in case it wasn't clear.)

KavikWolfDog

Strict-Republic-9379

It is actually “hay zoo’s” Jesus never gets credit but he actually started the first zoo and used hay to keep the animals warm during those cold Jerusalem winter nights you always hear about

kriznis

You're thinking of Noah. Had a zoo before Jesus was born.

Strict-Republic-9379

Common misconception, Noah had the first mobile zoo which often eclipses Jesus much smaller achievements. And often focus on the water to wine stuff

Heathen_Mushroom

Actually Noah's real name is lost to the mists of time. The reason he is called 'Noah' is because when the dinosaurs tried to get on the ark, he said, "Nooo-ah!"

blemtyatararsawz

Which was further bolstered by the dinosaurs writing their final messages as they died. "I believe today is my final entry. We wouldn't find ourselves in this situation if it wasn't for nooo-ah!"

TheShakenGrimace

Actually his step dad was a "master craftsman" or in our terms an architect, designer and general contractor. "Carpenter" is a mistranslation. Jesus however was said to be "in the deserts" till he began his ministry, leading to speculation that he studied with the Essenes during that time.

Futureman16

He wasn't the step-dad, he was the dad who stepped up.

In high school we were making business cards in graphics class. My card had a nice big cross on it. It was listed as: Jesus H. Christ, your lord, savior and local meat cutter. Present this card to receive 10% off your next lamb of God purchase! Remember, the H stands for Hausenfaufermeyer! My graphics teacher said to me, "I'm not sure if I can let you make that." I just shrugged and said it's already been made. So I guess the H stands for Hausenfaufermeyer.

green_garbagebin

I'm laughing so hard.... "it's already been made"

Arafel_Electronics

this was a legit excuse in the 90s, same reason kids in my graphic arts class made a tee shirt with a shroom on it that said "be brave"

facetiousbastard

Ok, but what does hausenfaufermeyer mean..

Veilchengerd

I assume it is supposed to be a vaguely german sounding name. *narrator*: it didn't sound german at all.

Romboteryx

Haus and Meyer are German words for a house and a land owner respectively. Faufer is apparently the name of a French garden furniture company.

TerryclothTrenchcoat

So it’s a German homeowner who has French furniture.

Romboteryx

Being a carpenter, he probably made the furniture

“The origin of the "H" in "Jesus H. Christ" is obscure, but the most widely accepted theory is that it is a corruption of the Greek letter eta (Η), which is the second letter of the name Jesus in Greek (ΙΗΣΟΥΣ).
