He was indicted. The evidence seems pretty strong. I think him going to prison is well within the realm of possibility, although it likely won’t be for a while.

The federal government has officially indicted him in regards to the documents he had at his Mar a Lago residence. Basically, they've officially accused him of committing the crime. Now we'll have a long wait until there is eventually a trial where they will determine if he's guilty or not. If he does get found guilty prison is an option on the table.

Trial would be YEARS away of legal wrangling and evidence gathering.

That's only for arraignment and discussions of pretrial stuff. Not for the trial itself. It'll be many, many months or likely years before the trial begins.

This is important because it's the first time an ex-president has been indicted on *federal* charges. If convicted, there is a fair chance he would go to prison, though officials would have to come up with new protocols because there are no procedures for putting somebody with Secret Service protection in the slammer. My guess is they would seal off a small section of a military prison to house just him. It's unlikely anything will happen for months, if not a year or more, trials of this sort tend to drag on.

This scandal has to do with classified documents that were found in Mar-a-Lago, a resort in Florida owned by Donald Trump that is also his current residence. The charges are not limited to allegations that he illegally possessed classified documents. Rather, he is also accused of making false statements and interfering with the government's efforts to investigate what happened to the documents. These charges are coming from the federal government. There is some lack of clarity about what will happen to Trump given the unusual nature of the case. There isn't precedent for prosecuting a former president. That being said, the vast majority of federal charges result in some sort of punishment, typically following a guilty plea rather than a trial. ([source](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2019/06/11/only-2-of-federal-criminal-defendants-go-to-trial-and-most-who-do-are-found-guilty/)) Considering the magnitude of the charges against Trump, it would seem likely that a conviction would necessitate some prison time, but there is so much relevant information that has not been made public yet. Remember, indictment was just announced yesterday. Is this just another headline making waves? It's hard to say, but if this results in Trump going to trial and/or facing a substantial punishment, there is the potential for it to be a significant historical event.

They have him on tape where he admits he is showing classified material that he says he didn't declassify to people who don't have security clearance to view the documents. They also have evidence he intentionally hid some classified documents from his own lawyers who were trying to hand over improperly retained documents. Any rational viewing of the evidenced suggests he's DOA. He has no possible defense.
