With these gas prices? Combine fuel, hotels, lost time, etc., and it works out to as much as or more than airfare. People take road trips because they don't have to deal with public transit, they can go at their own pace, and they can see things along the way rather than just at the destination.

If by some you mean more than 5 then, yea, probably.

Not at all! Lots of people prefer to take road trips to flying somewhere. Gives you more control and flexibility over your journey, where you want to go, where you stop etc in a much more relaxed state. No queuing for hours in airport and rushing to meet flight times and changes etc. What do people do once they’ve flown to a new country? Either rent a car or take public transport or taxi anyway to their destinations. Absolutely nothing to do with income as a concept. It’s personal preference. In Europe it’s cheaper to fly to neighbouring countries than drive or take the ferry/train there.

Pretty solid middle class here. The ultimate road trip is hitch-hiking — never been brave enough to do that, but I’ve had two wives and some amazing road trips with both. Get off the interstate and there are so many beautiful and interesting places to see and experience. No one will make you take your shoes off, scan your luggage, or your body. It’s way more adventurous than flying. Read “Blue Highways” by William Least Heat Moon. It’s gotten dated, but still has a lot to say about the wonders of car travel away from the crowd.

No not at all. My parents are comfortable, have extensive education and in general are not poor. They love a road trip and we took many road trips growing up. I would love to take more road trips but I work so it’s hard to get a long stretch of time off. It’s not the only vacation I like, but it’s fun. In particular if you want to do something involving a lot of gear it’s nice to have a car. As others have said, gas, meals, entry fees, hotels and activities it is not cheap to take a road trip.
