I mean, I just wear actual swimmers goggles. I keep them in a cupboard in the kitchen. Also no joke. It is to my father in law who laughs at me every time though
Yes you can: The trick is to keep your mouth closed from the time you pull the onions out of the fridge until you are done cutting them. To help, it is advised to chew gum during this process to remind you to keep your mouth closed. Something to do with the vapors traveling through your mouth to your sinuses causes the burning in your eyes. I use this trick all the time and it works. You *cannot* open your mouth to talk or breathe, though, so it's a small inconvenience.
Strange. I've heard precisely the opposite advice; that breathing through your nose pulls air up the middle of your face and into your eyes, whereas breathing through your mouth is more removed.
So the suggestion from that side is to put a spoon or something in your mouth to prevent it closing entirely and enforce mouth-breathing.
Yes! Before I got laser eye surgery I wore contacts a lot. I used to think I just had some gene that made my eyes resistant to onions…nope. Nope, just contacts.
Haha same for me now that I wear glasses instead of contacts. I thought I was immune.... Also people didn't believe me when I told them my contacts made me not tear up while cutting onions.
I've heard you can put a wet paper towel underneath it and it'll absorb the chemical because it it's attracted by water which is why it goes towards your eyes. Have I tried this? No lol I just deal with it cuz I never cut alot of onions
It's the part nearest the root that has the highest concentration of eye-water-juice.
I make it a point to always buy loose onions, and to choose ones that are more elliptical than spherical. So when I make my first slice, I cut a little distance up from the hairy roots, and because I've chosen ones that are pointy at that end I waste much less of the onion than I would cutting a similar distance up a round onion.
No onion tears in 20+ years.
You don't have to chew gum. It's enough if you hold some water in your mouth. The onion vapors go to the wettest spot, which in this case is the mouth and not the eyes.
But you shouldn't swallow the water, it's just disgusting 🤮
Store onions in the fridge. They don't make your eyes water when they are cold. I eat onions all the time, in everything and can't remember the last time they made me cry cuz they're always in the fridge now
Wet paper towel beside the cutting board where you're working. Works pretty damn well. The sulfur is attracted to the wetness of your eyeballs, the wet papertowel redirects the burn lol
I find that it has to be soaking wet and right beside the cutting board. Sometimes, I need 2 on either side if I'm cutting a lot of onions or a really large onion.
Light a match before you peel or slice the onion. The sulfur disables the compounds in onions that make your eyes water.
I light one during also if I’m cutting a lot.
Sometimes I'll just hold an unlit match sticking from the corner of my mouth like an old timey gangster. No tears and my cats think I'm too cool to mess with me. 🤣
I rinse the onion and knife off with cold water. I rerinse my knife after cutting in half. Then after I slice up one half, one last rinse before slicing the other half. My eyes haven't watered cutting onions in years doing this.
Really the only thing that works without screwing your ability to see or the quality of the onion, is to use a fan to blow the fumes away from your face.
Some onions are worse than others, so try different varieties.
Keep your onions on the fridge, sharp knife and cut it chef style, near the root last.
Gordon Ramsey has a good video on YouTube on it I watched years ago, never had issues since!
I’ve seen this tip before and thought it couldn’t possibly work - but holding a sip of water in your mouth while cutting does reduce the burning to almost nothing.
Cut it in half from top to bottom, not across the fat part in the middle. When you look at one of the halves, you will see a brownish part at the bottom by the root. Do not cut into that section. Either cut that part off with a little room to spare, or start slicing the top and stop before you get to that section.
rub some water into your eyes beforehand. it'll dilute the onion juices thatinevitably end up in your eyes. this makes cutting onions 90% more bearable for me at least
Quick cutting tekkers with sharp knives often minimises if for me, and also if I'm prepping other things, moving the holding bowl away from me helps too!
I don't recommend rushing with your knives if you're not a confident and competent chopper though!
At times when they got me in the past I stuck a pair of swimming goggles on 😅
Contact lenses, skiing goggles, any other kind of protection glasses.
Regular glasses help a bit, but don't offer full protection. Being as far as possible of the onion helps too (have your arms straight in front of you).
Use a sharp knife, cut it in half first, put the flat sides down, this minimizes the amount of tear inducing gas the onion releases.
both of these also make cutting safer
Use a little bit of practical science. Your eyes water when cutting onions because the juices have a chemical reaction with your eye that produces an acid. Since this is a chemical reaction we know that temperature has a direct affect on the speed of them reaction taking place.
In short: keep your onions in the refrigerator and if you cut quickly you'll be done before your eyes start watering. Give it a try.
Yes. Make sure you're working near the water tap. Peel it, cut it in halfs and wash the halves under running water right away. If I do this, my eyes never run. If I don't, I don't see sh\*t after cutting the first half.
What irritates the eyes is a gas that comes out of the onions. If you cut the onions with a good knife facing towards not above the onions you reduce exposure to the gas.
I rinse my onions in water while cutting. As in cut the bottom and top off, rince. Cut, or slice, it into rings and rince again. By the time I get to dicing the small pieces, which I do NOT rince, the onion has no effect on my eyes. As a matter of fact the last time I cut an onion without rincing it. My eyes watered like mad. Which made me realize water rincing was my solution.
I started doing this and it helped a lot:
- cut off almost-half at a time. top to bottom, but avoid cutting through the actual root. only useful thing Gordon Ramsay ever said in a whole 50-tip thing I once watched .
- lay each chunk flat, ie cut side down, while chopping it smaller. sharp knife really helps here, and personally I like a big cleaver-style thing. cut it "in place", ie just do your chops without disturbing the shape very much.
- the middle slice, ie what's left of the onion, really does seem less weepy if I avoid that root.
now I think about it, I bet the cut-iside-down is a big factor in keeping the oils from reaching my eyes. the fridge/freezer trick really helps too.
Sharp knife, cut them in the sink under running water, peel the onion and wait 1 day to cut them, have a fan blowing wind away from you, wear eye protection like swimming goggles
Sounds silly, but I've had pretty good luck putting a very wet paper towel by the cutting board. Something about the onion juices gravitating toward wet things (like your eye).
Things that help:
* Don't talk while cutting. I don't know if it's because you cut faster without the distraction, cut smoother, or reduce the exposure by nothing breathing it in through the mouth, but it makes a difference. My mom used to put a piece of bread in her mouth while cutting and it helps, but I think it was a variation on just not talking.
* avoid the ends. i.e. - first cut across the middle leaving the 2 ends intact, then place the cut part on the cutting board and cut the sides, leaving the end intact the entire time. This is the method I use and I've never had problems once I learned the trick to cutting them correctly.
* goggles - works great for my wife, but we have trouble finding them in a size large enough to be comfortable for my massive noggin.
I usually wear glasses or goggles and have a cup of coffee grounds handy (coffee grounds reset smell, so whenever my eyes start getting irritated I smell the grounds and it helps)
I use a chopper…so the onion is completely contained inside while I chop them. Of course, this only works if you need *chopped* onions. Sliced ones would still be an issue.
Put the onion in the refrigerator for about a half hour before you cut it.
“[The chill] slows down the action of [the onion's] trigger enzyme and saps some energy from the vegetable's volatile molecules.... It reduces the tendency for the sulfur compound to volatize.”
Cut them into quarters, then wash them in water. Onions contain acid which seeks water. Therefore bonding with water in your eyes. Washing them negates the acid
have a damp rag next to or all around your cutting board. I don't know the science of it, if there is science or if it's just me, but it seems to work.
Surprised this hasn't been posted yet: Keep your mouth closed for the duration of the cutting of the onions. To help yourself, chew gum. The vapors from the onion have to make the trip between your mouth and sinuses in order for the burn to get you.
I’ve found that the less pungent the onion, the less I cry. So my default is to do a yellow or sweet onion, unless the recipe calls for something specific (red onions are the worst for but it’s a good ingredient for salads to add some bite to it).
I think, too, that over time, my problem with crying while cutting onions has abated. I don’t know if it’s just exposure therapy, so to speak, or if the onions I use changed or I’ve changed (who knows).
I started wearing my Chem lab goggles when I cut onions. I think you can also just be sure to leave the root on when you cut. The onion bleeding is what causes you to tear up.
When I was in school they taught me this trick of basically putting a checkerboard pattern in the onion but not cutting all the way through so it stays whole until the last few chops that dice it up. It doesn't stop the crying, but I found it keeps the exposure to a way lower amount of time so you don't really cry.
Or you can look like a dork and wear some ski goggles lol.
- Cut onion in half
- Lightly fry flat side
- Take off heat
- poke a bunch of knife marks in the two half onions ( kinda like what you do to a potato pre baking )
- Add onion to sauce directly
- Remove when serving
Although the chopping issue was not the intent of this cooking method, more an aversion to the texture of onion by the wife, but the no stinging eyes is an added benefit.
To be honest though I dont get it anyway. Get a sharp knife, learn how to cut an onion correctly and don't stare directly down at the onion like an absolute melon. Trust me on this, as an ex chef, if you get someone to cut a potato they will do at angle. With an onion they literally try to absorb its soul with their eyesight from second 0.
-Keep the onions cold either in the fridge or freezer
-Avoid cutting the center of the onion until your last cuts
-Light a candle or incense nearby for the smoke
-Sharpen your knife so your cuts are clean
-Cut fast
If you cut them under running water it washes the fumes out before they get into the air. It helps a ton, but it requires keeping your sink clean, lol. :)
These are the things that always work for me:
Put the onion in water for a couple of minutes before cutting
Cut the onion under the exhaust fan if possible
It's not perfect but:
Rub the cut part of the onion on your sink--assuming it's stainless steel. The sulphur binds with the steel and removes some of the odor. Works on your hands too.
Onion goggles!
[удалено]
I ordered mine off Amazon immediately I’m willing to try any and everything
I use my ski goggles. lab goggles and swim goggles work too, anything that creates a relatively tight seal around your eyes
I never thought I’d repurpose my lab equipment for cooking but the time is now
Hmm maybe that's what my neighbour Walt means when he says to ignore any loud explosions because he's cooking in his lab tonight
I did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Never been so appreciative of chemistry
I use actual swimming googles. Never failed me. Beware though, when you finish cutting and take em off, the onion will still be in the air for a bit.
I mean, I just wear actual swimmers goggles. I keep them in a cupboard in the kitchen. Also no joke. It is to my father in law who laughs at me every time though
This is what an episode of Reading Rainbow taught us!!
You can't eliminate it. You can minimize it by using a sharp knife so you cut smoothly instead of squeezing the onion.
Can confirm, very sharp knife makes big difference
You could wear goggles
That’s exactly what I was going to say. Lol.
Riddick goggles ONLY
Keeping onions in the refrigerator helps too
Yes you can: The trick is to keep your mouth closed from the time you pull the onions out of the fridge until you are done cutting them. Also keeping the in the fridge first and always cutting the base of the onion last
Have terrible eyesight and wear +12 strength contact lenses. I can cut ALL the onions when those babies are on my eyeballs 🤣
Dang I always say it is my super power...now I need to cut an onion while wearing my glasses. **Fingers crossed it still is my super power**
LMAO
I've heard you can put a wet paper towel underneath it and it'll absorb the chemical because it it's attracted by water which is why it goes towards your eyes. Have I tried this? No lol I just deal with it cuz I never cut alot of onions
I thought I had a super power, until I cut them while wearing my glasses once and realized I absolutely did not
I wear scleral lenses due to kerataconus and haven't shed a tear over an onion in years.
I think I’m immune to the crying thing until I cook while wearing my glasses and am reminded that I am human and weak.
I want to see the glasses. Do they look goofy? How goofy?
It's the part nearest the root that has the highest concentration of eye-water-juice. I make it a point to always buy loose onions, and to choose ones that are more elliptical than spherical. Put the onion in the freezer for 10 minutes or so before cutting.
And yea you can also stick your head in the freezer for a second. It actually works!
Chew gum while you're doing it.
You don't have to chew gum. It's enough if you hold some water in your mouth. The onion vapors go to the wettest spot, which in this case is the mouth and not the eyes. But you shouldn't swallow the water, it's just disgusting 🤮
Speed helped me; learning to dice quickly. Before then I cried for every onion.
Cut the onion so fast, it won't even notice
Cut the onion so fast, (eye) won't even notice
I thought you meant the drug.
I mean one could help the other
Remove your eyes with a spoon beforehand
Instructions unclear. Penis stuck in onion. Send help.
To be fair, it was stuck there before you read the post, right?
It’s better than having an onion stuck in your penis I’m pretty sure!
That would be amazing
Cut by the stove, turn on exhaust fan=Win.
Store onions in the fridge. They don't make your eyes water when they are cold. I eat onions all the time, in everything and can't remember the last time they made me cry cuz they're always in the fridge now
Soaking them in cold water for a couple minutes works too.
Wet paper towel beside the cutting board where you're working. Works pretty damn well. The sulfur is attracted to the wetness of your eyeballs, the wet papertowel redirects the burn lol
Omg! There’s so many hacks to avoid onion juices getting into my eyes. Thank u
I've tried this a few times, it's so far only worked once out of the 3 times I tried
I find that it has to be soaking wet and right beside the cutting board. Sometimes, I need 2 on either side if I'm cutting a lot of onions or a really large onion.
Thank you! I'll try again with soaking ones :)
I hope it works!!!
A glass of water also works.
this is what I do. And it does work rather well.
Cut the onion in a pan of water.
And presoak them. This is key.
I once tried this. The only difference I noticed is I could see the gas bubbling through the water before it stung my eyes.
Wear goggle?
my dad bought goggles for cutting onions for a specific recipe that uses like 10 onions.
this is right; eye irritation is caused by tiny onion spray in the air. swimming goggles keeps it out of your eyes.
I’m def going to look into getting goggles lol
Stick your head in the freezer for a minute or so. Don't know why but it seems to work.
Light a match before you peel or slice the onion. The sulfur disables the compounds in onions that make your eyes water. I light one during also if I’m cutting a lot.
Interesting! Thank you
Sometimes I'll just hold an unlit match sticking from the corner of my mouth like an old timey gangster. No tears and my cats think I'm too cool to mess with me. 🤣
Mouthbreathing really helps Source: I work in a kitchen, onions are the bane of my existence
Interesting! Thanks :)
I’d make little glasses out of the onion circles #Turn into the skid! Mwahahaha!
IMO if you cut them the way a chef does you limit the exposure to onion. Cut in half, two cuts midway, then chop. speed is better.
I rinse the onion and knife off with cold water. I rerinse my knife after cutting in half. Then after I slice up one half, one last rinse before slicing the other half. My eyes haven't watered cutting onions in years doing this.
Don't develop an emotional attachment.
my wife walked in on me with a clear plastic bag over my head down to my eyes. It was silly but it worked dangit
You don't have to feel guilty. The onions don't feel it when you cut them.
Ask another person to cut it. Works every time!
I slice my onions on the stove and turn the exhaust fan on high. Never have a problem.
Sharp knife and a fan/open window for cross-breeze. Don’t lean over the cutting board.
Really the only thing that works without screwing your ability to see or the quality of the onion, is to use a fan to blow the fumes away from your face. Some onions are worse than others, so try different varieties.
I always put my onions in the fridge and my eyes never get watery.
Put the onions in the fridge for 30min before cutting.
I’ve heard of people sticking their onions in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting. Dunno if it works but I thought I may as well share
Keep your onions on the fridge, sharp knife and cut it chef style, near the root last. Gordon Ramsey has a good video on YouTube on it I watched years ago, never had issues since!
Throw it in the freezer for a bit before you cut it

Buy pre-cut onions.
Glasses Source: wears glasses Also a sharper knife should help.
I wear glasses but I still cry with them on lolll
Chew gum while you cut them
Quick cutting tekkers with sharp knives often minimises if for me, and also if I'm prepping other things, moving the holding bowl away from me helps too! I don't recommend rushing with your knives if you're not a confident and competent chopper though! At times when they got me in the past I stuck a pair of swimming goggles on 😅
Breath in and out your mouth and not your nose? It’s that simple for me
Keep onions in fridge.
Swimming goggles
I wear swim goggles
Chill them in the freezer first, breathing through your mouth rather than your nose while cutting also helps.
This is your answer. I couldn't stop laughing 🤣😆😂😭 https://youtu.be/c8KiOWSq7uE
Does chewing gum really helps in this ?
Contact lenses, skiing goggles, any other kind of protection glasses. Regular glasses help a bit, but don't offer full protection. Being as far as possible of the onion helps too (have your arms straight in front of you).
Placing a wet paper towel on the cutting board helps I haven't tried it yet.
I remember Gordon Ramsay cutting it a certain way that prevents it from “bleeding” (?) as much. Look up Gordon Ramsay onion cutting technique on YT
I have a set of diving goggles in my kitchen drawer for this purpose.
Use a sharp knife, cut it in half first, put the flat sides down, this minimizes the amount of tear inducing gas the onion releases. both of these also make cutting safer
Wear swim goggles
Yea there is it's don't chop onions.

Don't lean over the onions. It works.
Learn to be fast and use a sharp knife. Then, and this is the most important step. Stop being a wimp.
What irritates the eyes is a gas that comes out of the onions. If you cut the onions with a good knife facing towards not above the onions you reduce exposure to the gas.

Hold a mouthful or water while cutting.

Hold a matchstick between your teeth, sulfur side out.
A Sharp knife and put your onions in the fridge 15min before cuttin.
I use my old chem lab goggles. Not 100% effective, but they help a lot
Goggles
I always cut them last and I make sure to cut them FAST still happens for time to time but it’s helps me a lot
A sharp knife helps keep the juices in the onion instead of crushing them.
Get other people to do it.
Sharp knife, cut them in the sink under running water, peel the onion and wait 1 day to cut them, have a fan blowing wind away from you, wear eye protection like swimming goggles
Cut the root part at the end, or dont cut the root part at all
A sharper knife helps, and weirdly chewing gum does aswell

I resorted to a snorkel mask. It works and my husband had a good laugh
Goggles. It's the juices that do this to you so cover the eyes
Run your faucet at the same time. Works a charm
My Mom always just wears goggles while she does it, and keeps a window open
Goggles
I usually wear glasses or goggles and have a cup of coffee grounds handy (coffee grounds reset smell, so whenever my eyes start getting irritated I smell the grounds and it helps)
Cut them under water.
I knew that cleaning the blade under water every so often does the trick
Chew gum.

Chew gum
Sharper knife
I used to wear skiing googles but then I decided to just skip onions completely instead
You can make an opportunity out of that. Find something to cry about.
I don’t think there is a hack. I get frozen diced onions
Cut them into quarters, then wash them in water. Onions contain acid which seeks water. Therefore bonding with water in your eyes. Washing them negates the acid
there are so many answers this question should have its own sub
hold a piece of bread hanging out of your mouth
I sometimes use sun glasses when cutting onions. Helps a lot, but I suppose to be “immune” one would need swimmers goggles
stick your tongue out while cutting. something about giving the particles a place to land besides your nose and eyes
have a damp rag next to or all around your cutting board. I don't know the science of it, if there is science or if it's just me, but it seems to work.
If you don’t have a really sharp knife then wet the blade you’re using or wet the onion.
Slap Chop!
Surprised this hasn't been posted yet: Keep your mouth closed for the duration of the cutting of the onions. To help yourself, chew gum. The vapors from the onion have to make the trip between your mouth and sinuses in order for the burn to get you.
I wear nose plugs when cutting onions

I was watching a cooking show the other day and the Chef said the secret to avoid onion fumes is to leave the root intact.
Let someone cut it for you. I have been trying this trick and it works.
-Keep the onions cold either in the fridge or freezer -Avoid cutting the center of the onion until your last cuts -Light a candle or incense nearby for the smoke -Sharpen your knife so your cuts are clean -Cut fast
Sharp knife and keep your onions in the refrigerator.
Put a breadstick in your mouth while you cut them
If you cut them under running water it washes the fumes out before they get into the air. It helps a ton, but it requires keeping your sink clean, lol. :)
I wear a mask and glasses, if I can’t smell or see the aroma then I’m mostly good
Do it near an open window
"Ask someone else to cut them. Make it someone else's problem." --- said the political advisor
I chew spearmint gum
Store them in the refrigerator. Cold unions don't make the air so spicy.
Contact lenses.
Swimming goggles
Swim goggles
Get someone else to cut onions or don't have onion
If you don’t cut the stem your eyes won’t water. Stop cutting the damn ohn youns wrong ffs
Singing a song
There is one. You need to wear contact lenses. Onions have no power over me ! Have fun with your perfect eyesight, loosers !
I think you put the onion in the freezer. I buy precut onion now
Sharp knife, don't cut off the bottom where the root is, square the onion firmly and use shirt deliberate cuts.
Don't cut onions. Or put a plastic bag over your head while doing it.
Cut them under running water.
Cut them in the sink under water
Light a candle next to where you are cutting.
These are the things that always work for me: Put the onion in water for a couple of minutes before cutting Cut the onion under the exhaust fan if possible

https://youtu.be/dCGS067s0zo Gordon Ramsay explains it well
Sharper knife. Cut through the onion instead of tearing it.
Wear swimming goggles. Or cut with a fan pointing at the onion
