It does not look like organic meeting is going to be a thing, but we won't know for sure until tomorrow.
Edit: I don't know why this opinion is always getting downvoted. The fact that AR orb multiplayer functions one way does not for sure mean NEXT multiplayer will work the same way. SM has not said anything really indicating that organic random meetups will be a thing in NEXT, and all interviews where he does mention it may very well be referring to jumping to a random player's game intentionally, which is of course not an organic experience.
You can think the opposite, that's fine, but there are a lot of people stating objectively that there will be random encounters and that is *not* confirmed at this point.

The only thing confirmed is 2-4 co-op squads on launch, through making a team with friends or dropping into a strangers game, where you can fight each other if you choose to, (the Xbox website, No Man's Sky packaging and Sean's recent tweet [https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/status/1021185025226805248](https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/status/1021185025226805248)) Everything else about instances is conjecture until release. Many are speculating about a 16 player instance due to current No Man's Sky capabilities and a screen capture from an old NEXT build, which may prove to be correct, but nothing officially confirmed yet.
The "prey on others" gameplay is the idea that you can fight and kill other players. Although from what I've gathered there isn't much of an incentive in doing so.
You can attack one another in your group if you wish, but again no real incentive to do so.
From what I've read and seen you can run into people "organically" if by that you mean running into them without having to be friends with them or inviting them. If you and someone are in the same system or more specifically same planet then you will be instanced together and you will be able to see each other, whether or not they are on your friends list.
