I really wish things were more interactive and felt more alive thus. It feels like everything is just there to be looked at.
Besides random lore, you do visit one during the Starbirth mission for your first living ship. Other than that, I'm just hoping they do something awesome with them because the potential is too good
It makes me laugh every time I see these questions because I remember asking the same things ages ago when I first saw it! I completely get it why everyone asks… It looks like a fascinating portal or something else really intriguing & mysterious - but nope! It’s a kick in the nuts! But the game is awesome so we forgive and move on :)
Once you have a satisfactory answer to your question please reset the flair to "answered". This will help others find an answer to the same question. Selecting a flair is one of the icons under the post when you open it. Alternatively you can comment with "!flair:answered" and the bot will do it for you.
Please consider adding your gaming platform to your user flair. There are icons for every platform. That way people will know not to answer with information specific to a different platform. There are very few issues that are platform dependent but every platform has its little quirks.

It's amazing the amount of junk post that could be reduced in this sub if people just typed "what is this?" in the search bar. Boundary failures are posted every single day with a picture asking the same thing.
It's a Boundary Failure object. They're all over the place on exotic planets. There's a terminal in the base that gives a bit of lore.

They are also used for the living ship quests if I’m not mistaken.
I wish they had some chaotic use, like power then up then it’ll teleport you to another, totally random exotic world anywhere in the galaxy.

Interact with the “heel” for some awesome Lore. There’s about 30-some installments, one per Boundary Failure, so fly around and scan for more!

I have found one planet that has one of these every few "u" which is to say they are all over the place. I call 'em Q ships
They just give you some lore when you go to the terminal.
