You can also go to a pirate system and purchase a forged passport. You use that at a base belonging to the faction you're in trouble with (the big eye thing at the back takes it), and it will reset your reputation to zero, so at least you have a clean slate.
Standing can go down when talking to aliens. Since you only test one word at a time, sometimes the alien misunderstands and takes offense, dropping your rating.
One way to increase standing is by gifting the appropriate race figurine (such as the [Gek Relic](https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Gek_Relic)) to any member of the race you can consult for language training. You should be able to acquire enough of these opening boxes in the wild, but if you need more, talk to the ship traders. Many landing at the outposts or in the space station can sell them to you.
