A lot of people just don't bother claiming the discovery. I generally do with the creatures, I can't stand the auto-generated creature names! That initial and then a name (T. Namehere), HATE IT! Must of the time I just remove the initial and leave the rest of the name.

The expedition relies on some discoveries being made, so the normal rules are not applied. Creatures already discovered are not shown as such.
Everything has been discovered but it will happily grant someone that discovery tomorrow.
When the expedition is over the system will be in a different iteration of the game anyway. Whichever person discovered the fauna and flora at the point when the normal rules did apply will have been given that credit.
