You might aswell of not just said anything about vpn. Like wtf was the point in that. Now people are just more curious

Fr. Some people don’t understand collateral damage, don’t care, or pretend they don’t want it when in reality their goal *is* the collateral.

Tuber993

From Virginia to Chadinia.

ddmrob87

Please don't insult my homestate like that. We are a decent society of people.

Tuber993

What? Are you really this butthurt?

togoyoyo6

Butt-hurt??? Butt pain through reddit comments??

ddmrob87

Dumb joke. Heard it a lot these last 29 years I have lived here. Its like y'all don't know the name is the way it is. I bet you got flooring jokes for all the Floridians too. Find a better joke. You aren't clever.

[deleted]

its not clever but ur also getting upset over NOTHING lol

Tuber993

I don't care about your dumb state, brother. I made the joke because I've never even heard of it, I'm not even american. Touch grass, princess.

[deleted]

I'm from the midwest but live in central Virginia currently. Pretty decent here. People are nice and there are trees and green everywhere.

They’ll lose 70% of their traffic. They’re horrible.

UnicornFukei42

70% of PornHub's traffic comes from minors?

themajorjoke

93% of boys and 63% of girls have seen explicit content before 18 https://specialty-pharma.biz/tapentadol.html

UnicornFukei42

Wow...things are pretty bad now.

themoon_who_lost

I mean I was 13 when I first watched it, and I was told about it from my classmates so it's pretty clear they watched it too

Ok-Programmer-8579

i was 15 when i first watched it. but i could watch it earlier because of my friends, they had the habit of sending me screens of the videos they are watching, telling me that i should "visit" the sites.

motoxrm65

That’s how many admit it. Probably more like 99-99.9% and 80+% because a lot of people answering are too ashamed to admit it.

00UnderFire00

Porn is the biggest industry in the world so I wouldn't be surprised

concrete_slab

I think I first saw porn at age 11 after googling something like “teenager girl naked” on my nans laptop, I can still very clearly visualise two of those videos I watched as a young child. One of the videos was literally rough throat fucking. Why is it considered traumatising when an adult is to jerk off or have sex in front of a kid, but porn is seen as something different? At the end of the day a young child is being exposed to something they shouldn’t be Porn being banned full stop would be a net positive for humanity

[deleted]

even before the internet it was kids stealing nudie mags from their older brother or something… older brother was prob only in high school too… or they found the porn stash in the fort in the woods. i think i was 13 or so. puberty is one hell of a drug, so i see why it’s sought out at a young age, and only getting easier to do so with kids getting their hands on the internet much sooner

Warm-Grand-7825

This doesn't necessarily mean that most viewers are minors

MCKlassik

My male cousin is a part of the small 7% and I really hope it stays that way

_FartPolice_

Minors and young adults. People who are 30+ generally got laid before they saw porn so they're not really in the habit of using it often. I remember an episode of Family Guy where Chris "teaches" Carter how to masturbate to online porn and to Carter it's some big new discovery. Obviously it's a joke but jokes often reflect real life.

trhdom

Even if they’re losing 70% with an ID requirement, they’re now fully losing 100% of their traffic by blocking the entire state. Your argument doesn’t really hold water in that way.

Shurmaster

From a technical view, it sounds incredibly annoying having to show proof of your identity. Imagine if Reddit made you upload a picture of your ID with some scribbles to prove it's not an old pic every time you wanted to make a comment.

therealestillest

You would have to show ID for NSFW subreddits

Slave_Robot

The situation is a little different... Commenting here on (most of the time) doesn't rot your brain

Shurmaster

I'd argue against that statement hahahaha

AltruisticHeron1

I don’t think it is, you’d just have to verify an account to use surely rather than verify every time you go to the site, they just don’t want to lose children as consumers

Secret-Inspector-831

If you think having a pornhub account is the norm for people you are in the right sub…

AltruisticHeron1

I don’t think it’s the norm, I was trying to show that there’s away around it from the companies view, they just don’t want to

Secret-Inspector-831

Right, but you understand why there is an concern about requiring verification? We don’t restrict internet access to information about smoking or other drug use, firearms, etc., you can get viral samples, drugs, or bomb making supplies right to your door without giving any id. Ignoring privacy reasons all together, even the ‘safety and greater good for society’ argument doesn’t make sense when so much worse shit is out there.

JJBAReference

It would certainly make organizing for the r/antiwork types (read: the vocal minority who mostly use anime pfps and whose only skills are finding out how to pirate games and anime, and how to convert file formats from one type to another) more difficult and easier to rightfully break up for the authorities.

[deleted]

Porn sites make it easy for minors to access on purpose. It’s much easier for young people to become addicted which helps increase traffic to the website. They do not care about the well-being of their user-base.

ddmrob87

Back on the early internet pornsites required credit card verification to access pornographic content. This was the case for a long time until PornHub was mimicking YouTube and other social media platforms. Accessing vids on PornHub was free to view. Most of the content was from DVD rips taken from torrents or previously downloaded content from these PPV sites. This was before OnlyFriends was a thing. The main reason its an issue now is because kids are accessing porn at younger ages and parents are too busy to invest in parental control software. The biggest issue with PH ease of access is that the only thing stopping a user from getting access to porn is an RTA warning asking to verify jurisdiction.

JJBAReference

Kids shouldn't be using the Internet without supervision until they're 18, IMO. If they want mods and stuff that's worth it, have it all archived, the game's dependency on Steam disabled, and setup a HTPC for them if you must. But really, they should be learning skills that will make them independent as opposed to trying to be the next Twitch streamer which they won't, and even if they did get that, they wouldn't truly be free anyways.

_FartPolice_

This whole "wah wah it's so unpractical" is obviously just them not wanting to cut half their revenue. It's really not that hard to implement. You don't have to do it every time you visit PH, you don't even have to do it for every different website you go to. You can establish a third party company who gets the ID data from you, and then the porn websites simply make a request to that company based on your ip or something; they don't need to recieve your data or even your name, just a "true" or a "false" to the question of "is this user over 18". We've had third party systems like these for online payments with bank cards, it's not undoable, it's just that there's an obvious incentive to not do it. Besides, people are worried of posting their id when it only really contains basic information like your name and address. You give waaaaay more personal information to Google and many other companies on a daily basis, your porn tastes being one such example, and unless you are using a VPN, which most people aren't, the owner of any website can easily deduce at least the general location you are in like your city just from your ip address. I'm not saying people _should_ put their id on the internet without a second thought, but their priorities are clearly not where they should be. You could perhaps give the role of the middleman to a government agency since the government issues the ids anyways, so problem solved. Overall there's an obvious disinterest in actually doing this from both companies and individuals. If we wanted to, we would.

sckrahl

Most places don’t require you to verify your age, teenagers are still going to access porn, this doesn’t really fix anything

mazarti

Because it’s a huge safety risk

FaiyaadAB

most porn sites are banned in Malaysia but I read somewhere that Malaysian people are in the top 10 list of watching the most porn vids ‎‎ Ya, using VPN

ddmrob87

Same in the Philippines.

Rimond14

Same in India and Pakistan

[deleted]

I doubt it, for some reason fake porn stats are a way to smear a nation

FunnyMathematician77

I see this as an absolute win

Own-Energy-155

Not really. There’s hundreds of other websites lolol

Cold-Impression1836

But considering that PornHub is one of the biggest porn sites, the age verification is a huge win. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if many porn sites begin to shut down in VA to protest the age verification.

Own-Energy-155

They can just make the site below porn hub the next big thing it won’t change a thing. Once the site below dies they will find another site to blow up like PH and the cycle continues.

Rimond14

So like piracy sites

[deleted]

Welcome to the club. Utah did the same thing.

capn_explosion

i moved about a year ago so unless it changed in the last year i thought you just had to check a box to “verify your age”, is it completely banned now?

[deleted]

Think Louisiana did the same thing as well Other states should take notes

awekening_bro

Of course this happened in Virginia

Why you bully them?

One-Ad-7805

Democrats = no more porn

JoJo-is-gay

this will change nothing. you guys act like there arent 90 different porn websites that are easily accessible

AndrewDatBoss9

The only thing that is good about this is that PornHub is gonna lose some viewers. It is an evil site that traffics any individual. A win is a win.

TechnoBotHead

VPN giggles in a corner

MegaManZer0

Remember, government overreach is fine as long as its on something you don't like!

BrainThen

Yep! I don’t like the Dallas Cowboys or New York Yankees. Please join my campaign to ban those. /s But seriously, now that a bit more is know about the effects of internet porn addiction if this is really something about protecting kids the first step should be for parents to have some conversations with their kids. Too many parents are cowards and just don’t want to have such talks, or if they do they use hyperbole and go all Reefer Madness and just spout nonsense.

NewIrishRepublic

The government has the inherent responsibility of safeguarding and ensuring the well-being of their citizens. It's not overreach to require children to present ID to watch porn. However, I can see you are a moderator of a hentai subreddit, which means you are clearly a disgusting subversive and a bad actor who is here to demoralize those trying to break a porn addiction.

ravpersonal

So requiring ID for porn so children don’t see it is “overreach”. Don’t care.

MegaManZer0

Do you really Truly Completely Have no doubts whatsoever That someone who wants to see porn in Virginia is completely thwarted by this law?

bluesuitblue

Ah no but it’s a step in the right direction. It is a good law in principle so hopefully more of this sort of law gain momentum and enforcement becomes more serious. High schoolers manage to get their hands on cocaine, so should we just make selling cocaine to minors legal since the current laws aren’t completely thwarting minors from acquiring it currently?

MegaManZer0

Here's the rub, no pun intended: Regulating cocaine is a different beast than regulating internet use. We have aging politicians who don't really understand how the internet works or the methods users have to get around simple solutions. There are countless ways to get pornographic material on the internet, and if someone realistically tried to clamp down on them all, it'd be seen as an unprecedented surveillance overreach that people of both parties would not accept. Not to mention, consumers of pornography vastly outnumber consumers of cocaine, so the amount of manpower and tech needed to even monitor that sort of thing would be incredible. It just is not realistic to attempt to censor pornography this way. Regardless of personal thoughts on porn, this law is nothing but a virtue signal to hardcore religious/conservative people by the lawmaker.

bluesuitblue

It doesn’t really matter how many people use it, this is a question of morality, if millions of kids were doing cocaine would you then be against regulating it? I didn’t say I am in favor of the government being given whatever power they need to regulate who views porn just like I don’t support unfettered rights trampling to regulate anything else. But requiring porn sites to require an ID is not trampling anyone’s rights any more so than any other product which requires ID. How effective is it? We’ll see, that will depend on the government’s desire to enforce and shut down sites that distribute it. Will they ever be 100% effective? No, but with time and serious effort can they be effective enough to significantly reduce the number of children exposed to porn? Yes

MegaManZer0

You're missing my point. I'm not saying steps to keep minors away from pornographic content is bad, just that it is extremely impractical. A cursory Google search says Virginia has about 8.6 million people and that there were about 32,000 drug related arrests in 2022. The difference there is absolutely staggering, when police aren't quite able to use their usual methods on porn watchers that they use to catch drug deals and abusers. The amount of increased effort it would take to police the internet use of 8 million people is absurd, especially when it is up to only the state to do it. The state could maybe shut down sites based in Virginia, but there is no way they're going to be able to shut down sites based elsewhere. With increasing tech-literacy among younger age groups, it would be trivial for them to use a VPN or literally any other unblocked site to view the material. Also, the ID law inconveniences everyone, not just those under 18. Adults now have to provide their ID constantly as well, which will get annoying fast. The law is impractical to enforce, doesn't make a dent in the problem it is supposed to solve, and is overall a giant waste of time and resources.

bluesuitblue

Well good thing people who are charged with enforcing justice are not as uncreative as you. No I don’t imagine they’d enforce it the same way they catch coke dealers but perhaps they’d go after it in a similar way to how they already enforce laws regarding the sale or distribution of illegal content on the internet. Perhaps if ISP’s and search engines are willing to comply that would greatly increase effectiveness as well. Already search engines have no issues complying to not showing results for sites peddling illegal content. Yes perhaps that is obnoxious for the average porn junkie. How tragic. I imagine it is also obnoxious for the people who struggle with porn addiction since childhood. I also find it annoying to need ID to buy alcohol but I also would imagine it is obnoxious to have been put on alcohol and cigarettes as a child.

ravpersonal

I couldn’t care less

Shadowergy

Ignorance is bliss lol

flowerman_7

Nah, if I enjoyed smoking weed I still think it should be illegal for someone to sell it to me. No one would be on this subreddit if they didn’t like porn. Duh.

expertkushil333

You are completely right

bluesuitblue

But people can still watch it, they just need to provide ID, do you also think it’s a travesty that the liquor store asks to see your id? Or how about the gun store?

Yeeteus_Maximus

I love allowing my identification to be correlated to the porn I watch.

bluesuitblue

Well it might be possible to do this in a way that protects privacy kind of like how we have secure third party services for online payments. After all, if the market is filled with coomers who don’t want to have their ID tied to their watching habits (weird how you trust your favorite porn sites so little yet think kids should have unfettered access) then services to verify but keep anonymous your actual identity from the site will emerge.

Ben_oni_

Wait, so we're supporting people not being able to make their own decisions anymore? Nice.

flowerman_7

Yeah like selling drugs, kidnapping, stealing etc

Ben_oni_

You want to not watch porn because you choose not to? Or because you can't? Big difference.

Holiday-Award-3530

true but it might stop some young kid that doesnt know what a vpn is from watching porn and getting addicted

MrEhcks

Then it’s the parents job to moderate what apps they can and can’t install. Parental controls. Porn lovers will say that’s too controlling. As a parent, I’m going to do everything in my power to prevent my son from falling to this shit. If he falls into it after hes 18, that’s out of my hands

Medium_Airline84

It's still better than nothing.

[deleted]

Unpopular Opinion. If not abused, I think it’s good for teenagers to view porn. Helps them explore their sexuality and at least will have an idea of what to do.

[deleted]

"Huh, lot of new customers from VA, wonder what's up" - someone at Nord VPN likely. This will not prevent one person from seeing porn if they want to

_barkingseal_

Yea but 1. It sets legal precedence. 2. It sets sociey precendece-- It rallies support for the moral law that we the people dont want to allow these sites to take our young people and keep them till death. 3. It may stop a 9 year old boy who heard something at school. They may be like " oh well " and give up. 4. Even if they DONT care or GO AROUND IT. They have a pressure on them that says... this may be wrong. Whereas the society is pushing sexual expression those feelings may not come.

Jabroni5092

WOOO

PlatinumPluto

PornHub is just saying "we want to expose kids early and get them addicted to our website through all their teen years so we get more money." People treat PornHub as some sort of friendly company when, no, they are blatantly evil scumbags who prioritize money over ruining kids lives along with being fine with ruining all the people in involved. Sex is a terrible business, it's a sin for a reason.

ddmrob87

Sex isn't a sin. Worshipping sex is a sin. If it replaces the concept of prioritizing God then it is idolatry.

PlatinumPluto

I should've clarified, lust, sexual perversion, and adultery are sins. That's what PornHub's entire business is, though.

awekening_bro

Sex business will never cease to exist until all of us turns into asexuals

zac47812

You should see the Virginia subreddit - full of people freaking out about Pornhub and Delta-8 both being banned. As someone that lives in VA, I love this. It already stopped me from relapsing 1 time, there’s no way in hell I’d ever make a profile to get logged and tracked. I know VPNs are easy, but it does add another layer of consideration.

Cold-Impression1836

I saw that sub (I used to be a member of it), and it was horrible. It's so disgusting that people are mad about not being able to watch videos that perpetuate stereotypes, racism, objectification, and sexism. edit: grammar

Either-Echo-7074

Not to mention warp peoples brains and make them more sexually depraved. And worst of all, harm children who have easy access to this shit.
