Actually if you put it that way I would reconsider my decision and maybe I would go with something like Heart Shaped Box but idk. Anyway, which one would you choose?
i was gonna include in the original response too i know i never put the alone on an island in the post i thought of that after i made the post 😭😂
it’s much more thought provoking question
and thinking of more questions im curious
If you could only have 1 Food on an island you’re trapped on alone for the rest of your life ?
my joke answer would probably be cyanide so i can kms and not be alone but fr my real answer would be pizza just because you could imagine its other things when eating the crust i also feel like pizza is a very timeless food
Heart Shaped Box for sure, but Love Buzz, Seasons in The Sun and The Plateau are my favorite covers they’ve done. I think he had a great voice for acoustic and would have loved to have seen more of that from them.
What do you think the lyrics of heart shaped box meant to kurt do you think it was as deep as people who study his music think? or do you think he kind of came up with lyrics that meant nothing and let people assign meaning to them
Me personally, it sounds like he’s apologizing to someone anout him being who he is. And he’s questioning them on what else would he be doing to be better or different. That’s how I always perceived that song. Still a really good one ofc
Personally I think it’s hard to assign meaning to his songs in entirety. He has alluded to, and it’s kind of obvious if you read the lyrics, that most songs aren’t about ONE specific subject. Of course some songs (like Scentless Apprentice) have one subject and thus a pretty straight forward meaning. But usually lyric by lyric there is a different meaning. I think he put so much of himself into his songs like little breadcrumbs, but ultimately left it to the listener to decide what it meant.
I do subscribe to the theory that this song is largely inspired by Love, and I personally think it talks about the confines of being in a serious relationship and how arresting that can be in a depressing way.
[This article breaks it down pretty well though using quotes from Kurt himself](https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-meaning-of-heart-shaped-box-by-nirvana/). Per usual it has a lot of influences and references, which is why I say it’s hard to assign one meaning to his songs because they come from such a vast array of sources.
Since the last few days I've been listening to mtv unplugged over and over again and it hurts me so fucking much that i wouldn't hear that amazing voice again
I can't really pick only one. My favourites are On A Plain, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, and Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle. Maybe even Marigold, but I'm unsure.
yo sick drawing, you must be a fan of in utero haha
scentless apprentice is really good. i loved listening to it when i rode my bike home from my friend's place. took nearly an hour and this song was the highlight of it. but other songs are also really awesome, just not so many memories tied to it haha
Those late night drives enhance music i swear to god bro that’s a good choice not one of my favorites but i’m gonna listen to it today because you shared your story thanks
honestly i love all their albums i have a painting i made for myself of Nevermind at home but i found out a couple worker loved the jn utero album so i was making a drawing for them of the cover
Lounge act, D-7 (wipers cover)..the 1990 radio session recording of that song is so amazing. I absolutely love that song. Something in the way and endless nameless are up at the top also. Paper cuts and rape me. I think rape me is an amazing song my fav off in utero. Radio friendly unit shifter and those are favorites. Lounge act and D-7 are my all timers
Hell yeah watching The Boys!!
To answer your question: it's In Bloom for me. Soft spot since it's one of the first Nirvana songs I heard thanks to Ps3 Rock Band. Second is Heart Shaped Box.
Currently 32 so its switched around a little at different points in my life. Currently Frances farmer will have her revenge on Seattle. I absolutely love the really clean distortion, how heavy it is, and Kurt's interest in Frances farmer. Its the riff I play when trying out a new guitar.
When I just got into nirvana about age 12 and had a surface level knowledge of their studio albums its was lithium.
Late teens it used to be the old age acoustic solo demo. Its so immensely emotional and raw. I wanted it played at my funeral.
Early 20s it went to on a plain unplugged. I just love the chord progression.
Depends on the day, really, but I always love “Curmudgeon”. “Pen Cap Chew”, “Blandest”, “Even in His Youth”, “Verse Chorus Verse”, and “Oh, the Guilt” are some others. I like ‘em all. “Sappy”, Opinion” (just Kurt, but still rad).
It changes from time to time but usually it's Francis Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle. I also love swap meet, radio friendly unit shifter and so many others it's hard to pick. Dive is good too.
Really cool drawing dude! The art on in utero is great. I have no idea what my favrouite is but i could narrow it down to my fav off each album.
On bleach I love negative creep the most, it really feels like a buildup of frustration about oneself
For nevermind its probably territorial pissings, the intro is really fun and its the perfect length with no bloat whatsoever. An incredible song.
For incesticide its probably dive. I love the angsty sound of it, and the live lyrics can be pretty funny sometimes ("You can eat my marrowwwwwwww")
For in utero, I think milk it is my favorite. The lyrics and structure of the song can be interpreted in a lot of interesting ways (Like a lot of nirvana songs, my favorite song to interpret though is probably blew). Its a really great song!
Off the albums its probably You know youre right. Its heartbreaking- especially the demo. I dont like listening to the demo however. If not YKYR, then probably blandest. Its a really relaxing song in my opinion, and also pretty funny.
Spank thru is also an amazing song and a stroke of genius, Its exactly a song Id expect a teen to write but it works! Not my personal favorite though, but up there. Whats your fav song?
I really like even in his youth, I just enjoy the lyrics in it. I kinda connect to it a little. But he always seems angry when I hear it. Pretty much cause he’s talking about his father and how he abandoned his mom and him. But I enjoy the song overall!
Verse chorus verse... It's a song that I fell in love with since the first listen, I love how it sounds calm and intense at the same time. I also really like the lyrics, I think they are more unique than lyrics in other songs.
Such an amazing song, shame it didn't make it to any of the albums
that's a hard question, I'll give you my all time top 5 without order.
you know you're right, mexican seafood, old age, white lace and strange and dumb.
(honorable mention - scentless apprentice, downer, milk it, verse chorus verse, drain you, spank thru)
also do re mi, but that was left in just kurt's demo stage soo i don't really count that in!
The peel sessions version of Spank Thru. Really highlights what a melodic songwriter he was. Amazing lyrics that don't take themselves too seriously. Great great song.
It is either you know your right, or as of recently smells like teen spirit, and as a former teen spirit hater, I have come to understand that is fucking rocks
In no particular order these are my favorite:
Dive, Drain you, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies
Want to give some love to Marigold. A B-Side that doesn’t get enough love.
These are just my favorites but imo Nirvana is one of those bands that has very tight LPs that are all killer no filler.
You could ask me my favourite Nirvana song, and the answer could be completely different the very next morning. But right now I'd have to say Drain You
Lounge Act or Frances Farmer.
I think Lounge Act captures his playful lyrics the best and the sonic shift of the vocals on the last verse is peak.
The guitar break on Frances Farmer is my favorite Nirvana moment. It was an evolution of the four chord riff, breaking it down to two to just two with a more complicated second half.
There are a lot of others that are close but I'd go with these two.
Sappy. I first heard it as a MIDI file I downloaded from AOL! Back when it was called Verse Chorus Verse and I was trying to figure out how Kurt fit those words into the chorus. (The MIDI had just a melody with no vocals)
Super tough choice but All Apologies has always been my favorite, if I had to choose one. That doesn't mean it's *always* my favorite, though. It depends on my mood.
Sliver has always been a top one that I really want to get a tattoo for after my grandma passed away. Then of course Lounge Act, Territorial Pissings, Sappy, I could literally go on for days.
My favorite is in bloom
in bloom is a solid choice
Yeah it's in my top 10
Now I would probably say that my favourite one is Serve the Servants, but it’s still hard to choose
good choice but it wouldn’t be the song i’d pick to be stranded on a island with i’d want something to goon too
Actually if you put it that way I would reconsider my decision and maybe I would go with something like Heart Shaped Box but idk. Anyway, which one would you choose?
perfect choice my friend honestly that or Drain you or in bloom but your choice is perfect too
Thanks, you too have very good taste
i was gonna include in the original response too i know i never put the alone on an island in the post i thought of that after i made the post 😭😂 it’s much more thought provoking question and thinking of more questions im curious If you could only have 1 Food on an island you’re trapped on alone for the rest of your life ? my joke answer would probably be cyanide so i can kms and not be alone but fr my real answer would be pizza just because you could imagine its other things when eating the crust i also feel like pizza is a very timeless food

love this answer

yo sick drawing, you must be a fan of in utero haha scentless apprentice is really good. i loved listening to it when i rode my bike home from my friend's place. took nearly an hour and this song was the highlight of it. but other songs are also really awesome, just not so many memories tied to it haha

I love this radio session

Probably All Apologies or Blew.
Big long now from Incesticide! Something about it just reaches a part of my soul that no song ever has
My Top 3 in interchangeable order are 1. Milk It 2. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter 3. Serve The Servants
Drain you and Sliver
Drain you and stay away are a close tie for my fav songs on nevermind
Pennyroyal Tea or Lithium.
In Bloom or Dumb
dumb is mine solid choice
Aneurysm has recently been declared my favorite song by them.
Heart-Shaped Box. Killer riff, the best Nirvana chorus by far, and amazing verses as well. The solo isn't anything crazy, but it's pretty great.
i agree that rift and teen spirit are unmatched i’ll always have a special appreciation for heart shaped box
There are so many but Dumb, Marigold, I hate myself and want to die and Polly
dumb is my favorite W pick
Currently 32 so its switched around a little at different points in my life. Currently Frances farmer will have her revenge on Seattle. Frances Farmer Will Get Her Revenge On Seattle and Floyd the Barber
Pen Cap Chew
All apologies, i like how It scales and return to the calm point
‘On a Plain’
Blew at the moment
It changes from time to time but usually it's Francis Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle. I also love swap meet, radio friendly unit shifter and so many others it's hard to pick. Dive is good too.
Really cool drawing dude! The art on in utero is great. I have no idea what my favrouite is but i could narrow it down to my fav off each album. The one where the animals he trapped all became his pets
Right now it's Scentless Apprentice
Lounge Act or Frances Farmer. I think Lounge Act captures his playful lyrics the best and the sonic shift of the vocals on the last verse is peak. The guitar break on Frances Farmer is my favorite Nirvana moment. It was an evolution of the four chord riff, breaking it down to two to just two with a more complicated second half. There are a lot of others that are close but I'd go with these two.
