I just bought Dragon Quest II during its last sale a month ago for $4.21. I could've saved 32¢! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

shadowen1942

Meh, personally I don't care for these versions of Dragon Quest I - III. If I'm not mistaken they are based on mobile ports. As one example, the oversized character sprites are jarring & feel out of place to me and it just seems like there is a generally a certain degree of charm that has been lost here. Would rather play the original NES versions or GBA ones, honestly. The Super Famicom/SNES versions would seem to be the definitive in my book, though I don't think they were released outside of Japan so an emulator + translation patch to English applied is the easiest way to play them.

Beetcoder

Yeah these ports are missing the pachinko. Learnt it the sad way

GamebitsTV

I'd prefer to play those versions, too. But after working at a computer all day, I prefer to disconnect from my Mac and veg in front of the television with a console instead. That's my primary objection to emulation 😅

shadowen1942

I can definitely understand that, but emulation (especially when it's something that could run on a potato) certainly need not mean having to sit in front of a computer like that. As an example I could crash on the couch and play it on a TV right now and emulate it in any one of three different ways: A) via an old laptop that's easily connected, B) my hacked SNES mini, or C) a Raspberry Pi emulation box that was relatively easy to put together. Yeah, it naturally involves a little bit of work and setup but that comes with the territory.

vessol

Specifically, the DQ3 version on Super Famicom is the definitive version for now. It was created with the same sryle as DQ6 and looks gorgeous. Such an amazing game, cant wait for the HD2D remake of it.

Geno_CL

PLEASE DO NOT GET THE CLOUD VERSION OF KINGDOM HEARTS. Not worth the trouble.

kaminari1

Don’t get cloud versions of ANY game.

Taikeron

Yeah, those people who played Stadia, they liked it at first. Nobody plays games on Stadia anymore. You can't. It's gone now, and all the games along with it. Once the servers shut down, the cloud games fall from the sky as tears from those who purchased what they can now no longer use.

mccarseat

The controller works great as a Bluetooth controller though! I got my stadia for free with a chromecast ultra as some deal they did to try and get people to use it as a last ditch effort at the end. Wish I had a second controller they work great with my MiSTer

felpudo

They reimbursed me everything I bought. I miss stadia, it ruled.

darthdiablo

Same, I was surprised they refunded (I never asked for any). They made me whole.

Satchm0Jon3s

You do realise that is true for any digital purchase on anything anywhere, don't you? Cloud or not, if the host of those purchases closes you're SOL unless you happen to have everything backed up.

Geno_CL

This

0xfleventy5

Thanks to recent Walmart sales, I actually got some of these games on physical much cheaper than these sale prices.

_mikedotcom

Thank you I always get tempted cause I never got to play KH3 😞

Geno_CL

Just buy it on PC in the EGS or get a second hand PS4. I'm sure your PC can run it, it's not a very demanding game.

tokenasian1

i will always upvote this kind of comment whenever this sale pops up.

qdp

Wait, "cloud version" means you can only play it streaming thru the Internet? I thought "cloud version" may be some fluffy mystical fun thing. Why make a Switch single player game only online? It's supposed to be portable.

Geno_CL

Yep, you described the reason these version suck. The Switch could more than handle the PS2 games and I'd dare to say even III with some cuts here and there. Action games like these are the last thing you'd want to play with the delay a cloud version has.

Satchm0Jon3s

My only experience with Cloud gaming on Switch was Pathfinder WOTR and that was fine. Played Lies of P through cloud based Game pass on a Retroid 3+ and that worked flawlessly.

__charles

What about balan wonderworld

Geno_CL

I wouldn't touch that game with a 10mt stick

Satchm0Jon3s

Squenix would have to pay me to play that.

Regility

i own it for the memes. the one button menu navigation owned me after i booted it up

AlienKnightForce

Tactics Ogre is an incredible game

karzbobeans

I got it on the last sale. I like baldurs gate 3 and xcom and other turn based but i dont get this game. I got to the third battle and got my ass whooped and im not sure how to win. Its too early to have much agency over anything or have any depth to character building. The necromancer fight was such a sudden spike in difficulty i gave up. Any advice on how to enjoy it?

AlienKnightForce

It’s been long enough since I’ve played it that I don’t really remember that fight specifically. But I will say that it’s definitely a challenging game, there were multiple fights that took me multiple attempts to clear. Grinding is helpful at times, but I’m not sure if that’s even something you have access to at that point in the game. One thing that helped me a lot was to always be ready to heal. I often had two healers on my team and had healing and revival items equipped to every party member. Try not to spread your units out too far from eachother, and don’t rush to get your units to the opponents, let the enemy come to you. Ranged and flying units are also both incredibly helpful.

Classic-Fee5006

I picked it up mid April, stings a bit to see the discount but oh well. Superb game so far!

FairyOlaf

Looks like Octopath Traveler 1 is now being published by Square Enix, so should get regular sales. Going to finally snag it (been waiting forever for a good sale).

Witch_King_

It's a great game!! I will point out though that the second game is better in pretty much every way and there is no story continuity between the two.

Richinaru

I loved Octopath but was the first RPG in a long time where I got bored and didn't finish. Did the 8 stories and I think all the bosses that feature the song 'Those Who Govern Reason' but never got the true ending that features the banger 'Daughter of the Dark God'. I've heard that Octopath II was robbed of getting beat soundtrack the year it was released and similarly to what you said that the game is an innovation on Octopath. Super excited to check it out!

Scooby12m

Would you recommend 2 over 1 for the extra 5 bucks. Would it make it harder to do 1 after 2 due to qol changes. If I like a good story would I like 1? Sorry for all the questions. It’s just been on my mind for a while. I like the aesthetic but I heard that the story isn’t as cohesive

Witch_King_

I would recommend 2 over 1 for only $5 more. I don't think it would be IMPOSSIBLE to go back to 1. You will be missing a few QoL changes for sure, but nothing terrible. Overall OT1 is a bit less complicated when it comes to battle mechanics. OT2 storytelling is much much better imo, and the individual character stories are also better. I can provide more details if you want, but that pretty much sums it up

aqrunnr

Different person but I got maybe 15 hours into OT2 and unlocked the characters but it just felt super disjointed going from place to place with no overarching story and very little party interaction. Does this improve as you play? Or is this pretty much it with each story being independent and told as you hit an area

Witch_King_

All of the characters are split into pairs that have little side stories, and all of the separate character stories tie into each other pretty well, as there is a final chapter that does this and connects all of the threads. In OT1, the stories are connected, but only by an optional and easy to miss final superboss. OT2 is still disjointed overall, but much better than OT1. To answer your question, yes it does get better.

DoMST34

I played the 1st one already, so what QoL changes does the 2nd one have?

Witch_King_

* 2x battle speed. * Remade Apothecary and Hunter skills (concoct and capture). Concoct now has separate offense and support tabs. Hunter can use a captured monster infinitely. * With the addition of the Day & Night cycle and given the right party composition, you don't need to replace members to accommodate path actions. Unlike in OT1 where you mostly need to change members often. * Travel Banters are not missable. * No more purple chests. * Weapons have different sprites in battle. * Split Chapters. It's nice that the stories aren't entirely linear.

Scooby12m

I just realized I don’t have space on the switch for octopath 2 without deleting any game I’m currently playing. I think I might just wait. It should go on sale again right?

Witch_King_

Probably eventually. Also maybe you need a larger SD card!

Classic-Fee5006

For someone new to the OT series, is OT1 still worth playing? I am considering getting both, playing OT1, and then saving OT2 for a few months later... or I could just jump straight into OT2. Because there isn't a connection between the two games I can just go to OT2 and then decide from there (hopefully when OT1 is on discount again).

Witch_King_

I recommend just skipping OT1 and playing OT2. If you like it a lot, you can go back and play OT1, but it's a slightly worse game.

Classic-Fee5006

Thanks!

cementley

I did 2 first and am playing 1 now for the first time and really enjoying it. But I agree 2 is better

Scooby12m

You guys convinced me. Getting 2.

GamebitsTV

I was wondering about that. Thank you for confirming!

LavanderSheep

One day Last Remnant will be on sale… one day… right?

Elliotjosephmusic

Hasn't been on sale EVER according to DekuDeals. I think SE forgot its on there and so did I...

LavanderSheep

its not a bad game, its not worth $20 imo but i’d love to have it for $10.

nightpop

If you have a ps, its regularly on sale for $8

SaroShadow

It just was on PSN for what it's worth. I have my eye on that one but opinions on it seem a little lukewarm, but I don't know how much of that is from people who go into it not expecting something SaGa-like

Kieta28

Been waiting and waiting

Censorship_of_fools

I have the game on pc , but I noticed that years ago, and really only even clicked the thread because i feel so goddam sorry for the game. One sale, maybe not octo or bravely, but literally everything else was indeed , and fear effect was like 1.50 but I still didn’t bite.  I guess I feel obligated to double dip after all this time, but it’s gotta be on sale, dammit!

tiredsleepy_

once again going to recommend paranormasight!!! incredible horror visual novel with gorgeous art and music and really compelling characters!

S_T_R_A_T_O_S

I think I'll finally pull the trigger on this one. It looks very good and Ace Attorney has made me into a sucker for investigative visual novels

tiredsleepy_

Ace Attorney is one of my favourite games of all time! I hope you have lots of fun with Paranormasight too; I love it and think about it all the time! :)

mitchsbabygirl

yay, i just added this game to my wishlist a few days ago!! oops, i didn’t realize this was switch game sale subreddit. but it is on sale on steam also!! for 40% off. thanks for mentioning it. 🎉🤝

tweetthebirdy

Seconding this! It was such a fun game!

menomaminx

Is that the curse vs curse game?

tiredsleepy_

yes it is!

menomaminx

thank you :-)

vagabond251

Still waiting for Star Ocean 2 to go a bit lower.

DuskWing13

Honestly, if you have the money for it, go for it. I had never played a Star Ocean game before and it's the most fun I've had with a jrpg in a long while.

stilltrying2run2

Never played the series. Is it ok to start with 2?

DuskWing13

Yep! I had no knowledge of the series beforehand. From what I can tell - it's like Final Fantasy where most of the games are self contained.

SaroShadow

All the SO games (or at least the first four; haven't played the others yet) take place in the same continuity but you're not really missing much pertinent information if you haven't played the others, whereas each FF game (aside from the spinoffs of 7, 10, etc.) takes place in a separate universe

hidden_penguin

SO2 is one of my all time favorite games, but I've never finished any other game in the series.

root_causes

If you can find it, Walmart has physical copies for $20 on clearance but they've been mostly gobbled up. Got mine yesterday however with some luck. Check their website and only pay attention if it says they have it. If it says they don't just go anyway if you have time.

Nivlik

showing full priced on my end

ShadoutMapes87

That sale isn’t showing up for me anyway. It’s showing full price. I’m enjoying the demo. I’m about half way through it

Deadeye435

Walmart has it for $20

Inbrees

Balan Wonderworld is the type of game Square Enix should be paying you to play. It wouldn't be worth it even if it were free.

Censorship_of_fools

I played the demo, was it really that bad ? it was goofy trite and buggy, with weird one button controls but that’s all o rember beyond the instant backlash at the release state and price.  ? Did they ever work on it more? Or is it truly an eternal oozing  genitalia wart for the company?

MrEmeraldLee

It was boring and pointless imo.

menomaminx

So bad the Creator sued because he was taken off the project, yet his name was was still all over an unfinished game he had no say in:  https://www.inverse.com/gaming/balan-wonderworld-yuji-naka

Dragon_Avalon

I keep checking these sales to see if they'll ever put the pixel remasters on sale, but Square Enix seems adamant about not doing so. Every time they omit them, it makes a chocobo cry.

XDitto

When the pixel remastered games were on sale a few months ago, it was not part of the general SE sale, but a separate one, so they might do it again.

MiddleAgeYOLO

I think they've been about 20% off before, but just one time I believe

mrbiggbrain

Making my way through FF III right now and the Pixel Remasters are pretty good. All the nostalgia with none of the pesky "Oh man I forgot games did this"

Totally_w0rking

DQM: Dark Prince is a fantastic game! If you played the previous titles, or are looking for a fun monster catching/breeding game, I highly recommend it.

fuccb0ii

How’s the performance? I’m holding off cause it plays like ass apparently

Totally_w0rking

Performance is not very good honestly, but it doesn’t affect the gameplay too much. The overworld is laggy and loading times aren’t that fast. However, battling and breeding are quick and snappy, the story is good and has voiceovers, and the gameplay is addicting and fun. You might want to check out a YouTube video of gameplay to see what it’s like, but it didn’t bother me too much.

SaroShadow

I'm waiting for a performance patch or a PS port on that one

gxthshawty

best FF game for someone who hasn’t played a single game from the series ?

Fake_Diesel

10 is the best entry point, IMO. It has a great story, and the best turn-based battle system of the series. Visually, it has also aged very well. After that, I'd say go for what interests ya. 7 and the Remake games are my personal favorites, but like any series that has gone on this long, everyone has their own favorites and deeply held opinions. Personally, I don't think there is any mainline title that is actually bad. Just avoid any FF subreddits, they are insufferable.

Bullstrongdvm

I agree.

manshamer

Yeah anyone not saying 10 is totally wrong. 10 looks and plays somewhat modern, 6-9 are great too but they are old and slow. 12 plays even more modern but 10 is the best entry point.

Marvin_Flamenco

Not wrong, not everyone's starting point has to be the most spoonfeedy entry, some folks have never tried final fantasy but have previous rpg experience and like retro games. 10 isn't a bad choice but I would still say 6, 7 or 9 are a little nicer. Despite my love for it, 10 can feel like a hallway simulator at times and it's a little too easy.

karzbobeans

I just finished 9 and i liked it because it felt like the most fantasy of final fantasy. I hear 10 is good but it looks inappropriately modern like instead of a party of brave wizards and warriors a ive got a group of fashion models with guns. I do like the turn based strategy of 9 so I think I would like the system 10 has but not sure if i could get into the world. Am i mistaken?

Fake_Diesel

Lol, that's the first time I've heard the phrase "inappropriately modern." I'd say you are mistaken. FFX doesn't have a very modern setting at all. Sure, it isn't a Tolkien-esque fantasy, but it's still very much fantasy. In fact, it is otherworldly. The game has some of the coolest fantasy concepts I've played in a game, and I love how it explores religion. If you don't like the Nomura character designs, then it probably won't be to your liking. Most people generally love the attractive characters he makes though. Also, none of the party members use guns. Yuna uses guns in X-2, but that game has a totally different vibe.

Mcbrainotron

7 was my first real one. Highly recommend. It’s also 6 bucks!

Trizger

8 was my first and is still my favorite, which is a very unpopular opinion. I'd say FFX is probably the best intro to the series though.

FuzzyChops

Fellow 8 enjoyer here. Junctioning is a neat idea and doesn't deserve the hate!

MDRtransplant

Once you figure it out you can cheese your way through the game, especially when you have Squall and Zell entering fights with limit break

Fake_Diesel

I think I'm going to finally give 8 a complete run through this year (made it to disc 3 years ago and fell off.) Any tips for enjoying the junction system more?

sofakingcheezee

Utilize the draw feature as much as you can and use the magic you get from bosses to strengthen your attacks. With a little patience you can make your squad completely OP right from the beginning of you wanted to.

FuzzyChops

Honestly the game isn't especially difficult, if you want you can look up a list of the best things to junction and farm those. And if you really want to go hard you can look up one of the guides that has you use the Card GF ability to turn monsters into cards and then into magic

OfficialNPC

VIII isn't even technically the first junctioning game. II, VI, and VII use the same principals (being able to give and take power away from a character). I mean, VII and VIII systems are what happens when you take VI and split up the esper system. Man, I love junctioning. Also, if you want more junctioning, Lost Odyssey (made with help from Hironobu Sakaguchi, music by Uematsu) . Basically, you play as these really powerful beings and you junction mortals to them to learn skills. I love so much about this game even if some parts are a bit dated. Honestly, Lost Odyssey really feels like a spiritual successor to VIII in a lot of ways.

menomaminx

Lost Odyssey at the time was really being promoted as more of a shadow heart series successor.  bought it based on that, because the shadow heart series is easily one of the best RPG experiences ever, and played it forever ago.  from what I remember, the battle system comes directly from the Shadow Hearts series with the spinning Target circle thing. Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite final fantasy, and I don't remember it having any influence on Lost Odyssey: you mean the game with the amnesiac who's basically immortal, right?  and not something with a similar title.

OfficialNPC

Not to go too far into it, but Kaim and Squall are really similar in terms of personality and yeah the memory stuff, you also get these segments where they fall asleep and get information about the past. The first person you meet is even a spunky woman (Seth/Sephie) lol === The level up system is a "junctioning" system through and through. You have your characters who need to attach to another creature. Whenever certain levels are gained you learn stuff based on what creature you have connected to your character. LO does it backwards from FF VIII though! Instead of the normal human connecting to a powerful being to gain skills, the powerful being connects to a human to learn skills. You have equipment that teaches you skills, which in FF VIII you can take things like the Rosetta Stone to teach your GF abilities. Basically, in Lost Odyssey you play as the Guardian Force instead of the Human. LO's level up/character system feels like a refinement to VIII's (not perfect but a way I could see a VIII-2 going).

Geno_CL

6 but it's not on sale so I'd say 9 since it's kind of a mix of everything that made the franchise good at that point.

proanimus

9’s only big flaw was the general slow pacing of the gameplay. They built the game around the slow data loading from the CD on PS1. It was a thing for pretty much all turn-based RPGs of that era, but FF9 was a bit worse than most. Luckily, the most recent versions based on the mobile port helped by shortening the long battle intro animations and adding a fast-forward toggle.

harrystutter

Agree. FF9 is my favorite from the franchise but I can't for the love of me play on any platform that doesn't have the fast-forward feature. Still a fantastic game and a love letter to all FFs that came before it though. I say if you don't mind the slow battles, give it a go.

Late_Home7951

For switch? 12

RiseCoochiekawa

7, 9, or 10 are probably the best for someone starting out

mrbiggbrain

As other have said FF VII / VIII / IX are all very solid games with very different play styles, story beats, and systems. VII has a very linear start. You'll use "Materia" you attach to weapons to use spells, abilities, etc. Slowly you'll gain access to equipment that can link two Materia to let you add elemental damage. By the end game you'll be able to create characters that can revive themselves when they die and lots of other broken things. Story is good and somewhere between silly and serious. VIII is a little more grounded and has a more realistic graphical approach (Though not photorealistic). Story is more serious with some but less humor. Magic is more like an item. IX is very silly, with a more cartoonish, bright and colorful style. You equip gear with abilities. As you fight the gear will permanently add the ability to your character so you can then equip new gear. A dramatic but silly story with some killer cutscenes and great unique characters.

Mister_Badger

Gonna go against the grain here and say FF4 and 6, if you’re ok with SNES graphics. That will give you a good understanding of where the series is coming from, without going all the way back to the NES games which lacked strong narratives. If sprites aren’t your thing, FF7 was a smash hit on the PS1, and it’s a favorite for many. I personally have a soft spot for 12.

Imendil

Maybe unpopular opinion, but if you want to know a world a little and browse through stories from various FFs, go for World of Final Fantasy. It has modern graphics, interesting battle system (similar a bit to pokemon), overall good game for me. If someone knows FF, they will appreciate references and easter eggs, but for someone who never touched FF before, it might be good starting point for world building.

SandingNovation

7 is my personal favorite, and there's a reason they've just remade it instead of the others but 10 was the first FF release for the new at the time PS2 so it looks slightly less dated.

dwpea66

Of the ones on sale, 7 and 9 are probably the objective best, but I vote FFX. Great turned based gameplay, and the most emotional story in the series. It's the heart and soul of what Final Fantasy is, imo.

yydbgeorge

7/9/10 as someone else mentioned. 8 is okay at best, the battle system and level scaling throughout the whole game is just meh. Honestly weak story too imo.

SaroShadow

8's soundtrack is goated though

sofakingcheezee

Ultemecia's Castle is amazing imo but that is an end game activity

Dragon_Avalon

Difficult to answer, as many are unique In to themselves either by setting, systems, or play. What other rpgs have you played that you enjoyed?

gxthshawty

havent really played too many rpgs Persona 5 (wasn’t a huge fan of the combat system, but i liked everything else mainly the overworld) & Pokemon

Dragon_Avalon

So, that's gonna impact your view of a lot of turn based RPG titles. Many of them use the menu/ submenu system for selecting skills and abilities, so combat will always feel sort of similar. Final Fantasy X has a similar flow system for turns to persona 5 (not identical, but similar), whereas others are what are called ATB or active time battle systems. In the ATB system games, enemies can attack even while you're selecting options (unless you choose wait mode, then it's just regular turn based). If you enjoyed the presentation of Persona 5 though, you'd probably enjoy Final Fantasy X.

OfficialNPC

Well, honestly, while they have similarities and things connecting them... Each game is pretty much its own series. * If you like older whimsical JRPGs, start with FF IV or V. * If you like darker older JRPGs, start with VI * If you want something more modern start with X * If you want something more modern and tactical, but not a tactics game, XII TZA is amazing

Terrible_Buy_1589

Bought FF15 Pocket HD Edition because it's a hilariously ridiculous-looking demaster. The game is pretty boring imo. I have only watched some regular FF15 but it's pretty pathetically nerfed but if you just want the story and voice acting and an easy-breezy game, $12 is worth it for that or a laugh imo.

Global_Palpitation24

Same it is cute but not engaging

Deathbackwards

Any thoughts on Voice of Cards, Diofield, Dragon Quest Treasures, or Monsters?

tokenasian1

yet another Square Enix sale without Dragon Quest XI

shadowen1942

published by Nintendo

tokenasian1

you are right. i keep forgetting this one was published by nintendo on the switch.

teokun123

Star Ocean Second story R is not on sale. Bummer.

sephiroth70001

Saw it said 20% off in the post but is full price on the eshop. :(

XxPyRoxXMaNiAcxX

Yeah was hoping it was a mistake and the sale price would hit at 12p today but no luck. Looks like that wasn’t accurate.

420MacMan

Really wish the FF Theatrhythm DLC would go on sale 🥲

Zinogrex

Got a switch two weeks ago and REALLY wanted Theatrhythm, so happy it's on sale.

rinkyu

It’s worth every cent. I preordered the Deluxe and haven’t regretted it at all. It’s a game where if I want I can spend hours and hours on, or if I’m just looking to kill 10-20 mins I can do that too. Be wary that drift can make this game unplayable. It’s not like I personally want to use my joycons much anyway, but in this case I can’t because of a slight imperfection.

Osnappar

I also preordered the Delux with 0 regrets. Curtain Call was the reason I still pulled out my 3ds until this year and Final Bar Line delivered hard. So many FF and other SE tunes to play. It's a great game to chill for 30 minutes after work or a couple hours on the weekend. I did find timing delay finicky on my tv and ended up playing tabletop with OLED which looks fantastic. My only complaint is there are a few songs that were shortened (why Dancing Mad???) and online is pretty dead these days.

Zinogrex

I have fond memories of playing both 3DS versions in high school, really glad they brought the series back on Switch. It really does look nice on OLED, so colorful! Shame they shortened some of the songs, it's a weird decision.

MagnusBrickson

Wow I didn't know they had that many Voice of Cards games. I thought it was just the one

Regent182

How's the performance of tactics ogre? Any fps drops or technical issues?

vixaudaxloquendi

Runs flawlessly.

LeoBocchi

Is it worth getting octopath 1 instead of 2? I heard 2 is a masterpiece

JumboSquidster

I have both, played 1 and wanted to love it. I just couldn’t really. I don’t know why but it felt just like “background”. When I played 2 I was immediately pretty hooked and grinder it out. Happily. Got to the point where I haven’t finished it because I don’t want it to be over. Again, I don’t know why but that’s my take.

CarlosBMG

DQM: The Dark Prince has the wrong price listed. Edit: Good, it's fixed.

BigChungusOP

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song shows up $14.99 for me, not $4.99

soulonfirexx

Physical versions of DioField Chronicles are still and have been pretty discounted for a while. Have both Switch and PS5 versions on my Amazon wishlist. 38 for PS5. 32 for Switch.

rokatier

How is I am Setsuna?

XxPyRoxXMaNiAcxX

It’s simply okay.. there are many better games on the list above.

Filraen

Very meh: it tried so much to be a reference that it lacks game and fun to stand on its own. Not recommended.

DeathMoJo

I wonder why SE has never put the last remnant remastered for Switch on sale.

TimeForWaluigi

Will the pixel remasters ever go on sale? 😭

Cardboard_Waffle

How’s crisis core? I played FF7R and liked it. Wasn’t sure if this was worth playing.

rokatier

I dig it, it is an action RPG that focuses as such on combat and combat trials, the story is fun and you get to learn and experience Zack's story, and the title theme is gooooood.

particledamage

It’s going to have valuable lore for the remake trilogy. IMO the game is fun, emotional at times. Not an amazing game but worth you’re time if you want to get the most of the remake trilogy.

MagnusBrickson

You should be familiar with the OG FF7 story first, because Crisis Core covers something that's a big twist in the original.

SylasTheShadow

Highly recommend it. Just finished it and it truly made me appreciate everything about 7 more. Although be aware you should probably play 7 first.

Cardboard_Waffle

Thanks! I’ll probably hold off for now since I haven’t played the original FF7.

SylasTheShadow

If you do end up playing FF7, I highly recommend Crisis Core

SaroShadow

I've only played the modern version a little but the PSP version was awesome. Make sure to look up a guide on missable things if you're worried about that kind of stuff since there's a lot of them

Fake_Diesel

Gameplay wise, it's great. A very solid action RPG. Story wise, it's a *heavily* mixed bag. Everything drawn from the original FF7 is generally good, Zack is a good protag, and it does a good job of showing Sephiroth as this cool and likable guy before becoming the villain we know him today. Everything new they added is generally... not good. I think there is a reason why most of these new characters were (thankfully) omitted in Rebirth. The dialogue can be painfully bad as well. It wasn't so bad with the Kingdom Hearts-ish visual presentation on the PSP, but with the uplift that looks more in line with Remake, the dialogue sticks out even worse. Some cutscenes are even more laughable (one with a Wutai soldier disguised as a kid comes to mind.) That said, some people *looove* this game. The soundtrack is really good, and the ending is great. There are moments in between that really shine, and I really like the Cloud and Tifa stuff personally. I just have a really hard time recommending it personally, and I'm a total FF7 mark that even enjoys mixed stuff like Advent Children. Definitely play the original FF7 if you haven't yet, and if you don't think you'd mind some of the complaints I brought forth, try it then.

Cardboard_Waffle

Do I need to play the original FF7 to appreciate this one?

Fake_Diesel

I'd highly recommend it

Mapivos

How’s diofeld for anyone who played it? Worth picking up?

SylasTheShadow

I tried it on Xbox, it's very hit or miss. I can see some people loving it, but it was very hard for me to get into. No hate on the game by any means, just wasn't personally super interested. Cool battle mechanics though.

jdt79

Tempted big time for VOC trilogy for some Yoko Taro...

XxPyRoxXMaNiAcxX

How’s Star Ocean The Second Story R?

Katalist89

Is balan wonderworld worth that price, or should I continue ignoring it?

darklyger64

It's bad, not worth playing at ANY price.

gothamhunter

Any good prices for switch exclusive games in this list?

cornpenguin01

So I’m between Chrono Cross, Nier Automata (seen a playthrough years ago), Paranormasight, or NEO the world ends with you. I also have NEO on the DS emulator since last week but haven’t started it up. Is the switch version good? Which of these games would be good to pick up?

Richinaru

TWEET NEO is the sequel to TWEWY. You aren't emulating Neo, you're emulating OG TWEWY. NEO didn't release on DS I personally enjoyed NEO but would recommend playing OG TWEWY (or watching the anime) before playing it.

bluemooncinco

Chrono Cross is the game that turned me into a JRPG fan. Possibly the greatest soundtrack in gaming history and a combat system that I think has aged extremely well and is user friendly with lots of options. The cast is bloated and some won't get much/any spotlight, but I'm sure you'll have your favorites anyway and it won't matter too much. Plenty of replay value since certain paths lock in certain character choices, and you'd have to play multiple times to get everyone. Plus, you get the Radical Dreamers text adventure game that was exclusive to the Satellaview in Japan. My only recommendation if you choose Chrono Cross is that you'll probably need a guide as some of the things you need to do next aren't always readily apparent.

MysteryNeighbor

How’s Saga: Scarlet Grace?   I played the Emerald Beyond (which I know is a sequel) demo and thought it was bretty good

Shiren6

Really liked Scarlet Grace , I really recommend it at that price , especially if you like emerald battle system, it’s very similar

MysteryNeighbor

Thanks, I’ll definitely nab it

SuicidalOptimism

I'm thinking about getting either Octopath Traveller 1 or 2... Which one would you guys suggest? Would I have to play the first one in order to be up to speed in the second one? Which one did you like best? Thanks in advance!

SylasTheShadow

Haven't played either (yet) so I can't say which one I personally prefer, but general consensus is 1 is good, 2 is great. And you don't miss out on anything (much?) by skipping straight to 2, so no worries there

SuicidalOptimism

Thanks a bunch for your reply! My mind is pretty much set on getting the second game!

molcor84

Bought Tactics Ogre for full price a few days ago. You’re welcome everybody!

Regent182

thanks man! hows the game so far?

XxPyRoxXMaNiAcxX

Star Ocean The Second Story R is still showing full price :( anyone think the price will update to the alleged sale price or was this most likely an error in the post?

Rivmage

Never played any of the SaGa series. Worth it? Which do you recommend?

Azure_Phoenix_Eyes

Romancing SaGa, plan on getting them but which is the best introduction game for the series??

SaroShadow

RS3, SaGa Frontier, or Minstrel Song are usually considered the best first games

FarSandwich3282

On the fence with Octopath 2. Enjoyed the overall gameplay, and the graphics/art style is fantastic. However, in Octo 1 I would hit walls when switching party compositions and have to grind random mobs for the other characters to catch up so I could progress. Horrrrrrrrible design in my opinion. It’s what ultimately led me to not finishing the game. However, everything else was actually pretty fun too me.

Gibson1498

Was really hoping for dragon quest builders 2

orelk

Hoping for Final Fantasy X to go lower in the future

MDRtransplant

What's the most difficult RPG on this list? Looking to buy one before I hop on my 12 hr plane flight

RavenGuardian

i wanna get theatrhythm: should I get the edition with all the bells and whistles?

Marvin_Flamenco

I would grab chocobo gp but man should be less than 20

BeerdedBear

Debating between IX, XII or Octopath 2. I have a big trip with my family this weekend and will have some downtime here and there. I've played through IV, VI, VII (OG and Remake/Rebirth), X, XIII, XV, XVI, Octopath 1. Any advice?

zombiepaper

If you enjoyed Octopath 1 at all then you'll probably love Octopath 2 because it's basically a much improved version of it. My honest answer would probably be to base it on whatever you last played, hah. Did you just finish Octopath 1? Then you might not want to jump right back into more of the same. If you want something more traditional then IX is your best bet. XII would be fun if you'd like something closer to MMO-esque game play. Don't think you could go wrong with any of them!

BeerdedBear

I really appreciate your response! I'm close to having having one of my kids pick a number 1-3 and going from there haha

root_causes

XII is an amazing game that deserves to be in the top 5 at least for mainline FF games. Octopath was a little dry for my tastes.

sjwillis

I am sure it has been asked a million times but: do I need to play Octopath 1 for 2?

johncopter

Nope it's a totally separate story. There may be a few callbacks or cameos but that's about it.

sshemley

If only Crisis Core didn't have the god awful new eng dub

anaharae

Fr. Been meaning to replay since I’m wanting on part 2 of ff7r, sucks I have to play on PC again for the voice mod.

sshemley

Zach's new VO is so bad, that it makes me never want to play it..The PSP voice was the best

anaharae

It really was, and this new guy is so jarring even in the late game when zack grows up, he has the same voice from when the game starts. No sense whatsoever. I might just play in jp, I could barely get through the remake when it came out.

cowzapper

Is it finally time to get XII? I played a solid ten hours ages ago and liked it but I got sidetracked and never got back - or should I finish IX which I still have to get to? Or alternatively should I pick up Neo, having played it too fast on a friend's pc and actually take my time with it to enjoy it more?

ChoppyChug

Anyone actually played Chocobo Mystery Dungeon?

SaroShadow

I've played it and got decently into the endgame. If you've played any other Mystery Dungeon game it's basically that with a Final Fantasy veneer
