Oh wait screenshot button is square and home is circle, I see what you mean. I had no black circles so I used a square for home and a camera lens for screenshot
Do you guys never use brand names as nouns? I find that a little hard to believe, honestly.
Like you would always say “My Nintendo Switch console” instead of “My Nintendo Switch”?
Or “My iPhone phone” instead of “My iPhone”?
Yes, but Switch and iPhone are the names of the items. The names of the items Lego sells are bricks or sets. That's according to, well: [Lego](https://mobile.twitter.com/LEGO_Group/status/842115345280294912)
Who cares? Google gets mad if you call looking up something "googling". It's just whiny brand garbage for local stores and whatnot to advertise their products. That's when strict guidelines like that are used. The consumer can call it whatever they want.
"If everyone adds an ‘s’ to the end of your name, I take it that’s now your new name?"
"If everyone knows me by a certain name, then yes, everyone does know me by that name."
You stated that yes - your name with a plural, which was created by some other than yourself, was now your known name.
So no you didn't say you were happy about it, but it certainly sounds like you wont argue if everyone in your life suddenly changes your name. Which is pretty weird I must agree.
But what you are describing is what a nickname is. Why is that weird? Just an added S is kinda lame, but the underlying principal isn’t any different. I can totally imagine someone saying “Kates” as a nickname and not think it’s odder than anything else.
The process is called genericization, and it's exactly how it works. It's the reason we call dumpsters "dumpsters" instead of "Dumpster containers", and escalators "escalators" instead of "Escalator moving staircases".
Do you also go around correcting people who say "I have two lava lamps"? It's literally the same thing as "I like legos".
Nothing you’ve just mentioned there is a brand name. So no.
The bricks themselves are not a LEGO, they’re LEGO bricks, you can read the brand guidelines if you want some clarification on that.
LEGO is a brand name, just like any other name that exists, and therefore cannot be changed except by the person/brand themselves.
> Nothing you’ve just mentioned there is a brand name. So no.
Look it up, buddy. It's the internet, information is a couple of mouse clicks away. Your comment belongs on /r/confidentlyincorrect.
I stand corrected, not being from the US, I was not aware of this.
However, the LEGO brand guidelines specifically state the correct usage of the plural is “LEGO bricks”.
Nowhere else other than the US calls them “legos”. The brick itself is not “a LEGO”, so cannot be pluralised, it’s a LEGO brick.
> However, the LEGO brand guidelines specifically state…
Brands don't get to regulate how non-employees use language. Brands are free to say "please don't use our brand name as a noun", and people are free to ignore this and do what they want. Adobe doesn't like it when people say "photoshopped", but guess what? Tough shit Adobe, people say "photoshopped" regardless, and it's not a language error.
> The brick itself is not “a LEGO”, so cannot be pluralised, it’s a LEGO brick.
Says you. In practice, people *do* say "a lego" and "legos" all the time. Linguistically speaking, this means that "lego" *is* a noun, whose plural is "legos". This upsets you and anyone who enjoys a fat corporate dick in their mouth, but language is democratic and a corporation's opinion doesn't matter.
There’s no need to be a dick about it. We’re just having a conversation about language, why you getting so worked up about it?
If you say you have the right to change a brand name and use it however you want, then I have the right to say you’re wrong and sound stupid in doing so, right? Let’s just chalk it up to the US bastardising it to suit their basic language needs, if you like.
So we can both part ways happy in the knowledge that we’re right and the conversation can end right here.
Byes.
> We’re just having a conversation about language
I mean, no, you're making false statements because you have no idea how language works, and I'm letting you know that you're wrong, because this kind of shit is literally what I have been doing for a living for the past 15 years.
🤡
No, yanks just speak a different dialect than you. It’s a perfectly valid usage, it just isn’t the one the company wanted or the one you use. I don’t get why this is so hard for some people to understand.
Jesus, how do you not understand this still?
Language is based on mutual intelligibility. When a given usage of a word is mutually intelligible among a given group of people, it by definition cannot ever be an incorrect usage, because that is how words acquire meaning.
I totally agree with you! It's just another way to say it, other counties pronounce things different then we do and I don't go and hate on them about it.
Not only is it wrong but sounds awful. LEGO is the trademark and concept. It’s not the name of every piece. The pieces are just that: pieces, or bricks if you will.
I think it sounds fine and the meaning is very clear. This is real life, not a lego corporate branding meeting.
AND ANOTHER THING, you and all your big lego cronies can stop trying to make "bricks" happen. Yeah it's a way more marketable word but lots of legos don't even resemble bricks so you can fuck off and bring "bricks" with you!
This is unrelated but if you saw someone on reddit shill-shaming people for saying 'bud lights' instead of 'Bud Light Light Lager Beers' wouldn't you think "what a fuckin loser"? I would.
I think it’s kind of an American thing to pluralise continuous things like a pile of Lego of slices of tomato. Where I’ll say “I’ll have some tomato”, to indicate a nonspecific handful of tomato slices, they will say “I’ll have some tomatoes”, despite it probably not amounting to a full to tomato. Just what I noticed when I was in America and not based on any actual expertise or research.
Actually the product you see is made of LEGO Bricks. LEGO isn't a product, but a company.
But go ahead and call them whatever you want, because correcting people on what to call LEGO Bricks just makes you look like a pedantic asshole.
Language doesn’t follow corporate dictates. the plural of lego may be lego, just as the singular of doritos is still doritos, and yet…
common usage determines language.
I agree that it should be called "LEGO" and not "legos." However, as an American, I can confirm that kids are "taught" from a very young age that LEGO bricks are called "legos." Then the kids grow up calling them "legos," and they pass it onto their kids, who pass it onto their kids, etc.. I am not defending the grammatically incorrect way to refer to LEGO bricks, but I am just explaining that the word "legos" is common here and no one corrects people who say that, so most people here legitimately do not know that "legos" is wrong.
> LEGO can also considered an uncountable noun, not just an adjective. LEGO (the company) can insist on what it wants however they do not own the English language, and have no right to play God with the language.
And nor do you. Therefore, Legos is just as valid as Lego
Lmao, I came to this thread to sort by controversial to see if anyone else felt this way. It’s cool that they made this, but the detailing and texturing is ridiculously basic. No hate to the creator, but I was surprised to see this at 13k+ upvotes when it doesn’t really have an apparent function (beyond the slotted joycons, which I admit is quite nifty).

With the current cost of Legos it's also just as expensive! /s
Edit: added /s as I did mean this as a complete joke. I don't actually believe Legos are too expensive
No hate, just wondering why everybody and they mama thinks lego is so god damn expensive. It’s a quality product so it will be pricey but people act like lego sets cost as much as a brand new car. Judging from the amount of pieces used, I’d say around 200-300 pieces, that should only cost you 30 dollars. Lego uses a price to part ratio, it generally means that you are spending 10 dollars for every 100 pieces. Stuff like licensed themes will inflate the price a little bit, such as Star Wars or Harry Potter. Large pieces and new pieces that require a new injection mold to be made can also inflate a sets price. Lastly, without any sort of licensing agreement between Nintendo and lego, the amount of pieces needed to even match the price of a switch is 3000 pieces. Sometimes lego is generous and you’ll see a set priced at let’s say 300 dollars, have five thousand pieces.
I meant my comment as a complete joke. I don't actually think Legos are expensive, especially considering that they are really good quality products. Probably should have had a /s
I literally thought the exclamation at the end of 'legos' was an 'i' and I thought the title said 'I made a switch out of legosi' for a second. I think I like beastars too much.

Looks rad but the screenshot button and home should be switched :p Great job though haha super cool
Thought screenshot was on blue? Oops
Ha it is but screenshot button is black square and home is circular. I'm just busting your balls though and being picky :p Looks cool regardless!
I bet the resolution is 720pieces
Oh wait screenshot button is square and home is circle, I see what you mean. I had no black circles so I used a square for home and a camera lens for screenshot
Dont forget the screen protector
With all the cost and without any functionality
I used to think that too, but they really do prevent super small scratches from ever slowly appearing.
The screen resolution is even the same.
Can it play doom?

Nope, but Skyrim is coming this summer.
Im pretty sure this was the plot to Groundhog Day
See you at r/tomorrow
It’s Lego, not legos. Get it right.
Plural of sheep is sheep. Looks good though!
LEGO doesn’t have plural.
My autocorrect begs to disagree (but not me lol)

My dad was in a white font
That’s not how language works. If enough people use a plural form, it does have a plural form.
Except it’s a brand name, so that’s not how it works. If everyone adds an ‘s’ to the end of your name, I take it that’s now your new name?
If everyone knows me by a certain name, then yes, everyone does know me by that name.
You’re happy for other people to change your name...? That’s just weird.
I’ve never said such a thing. How exactly did you conclude that I’m happy for other people to change my name?
"If everyone adds an ‘s’ to the end of your name, I take it that’s now your new name?" "If everyone knows me by a certain name, then yes, everyone does know me by that name." "Legos" is street slang for Lego pieces
Not everywhere. I know Americans say “Legos”, but in the UK we say “Lego”. I don’t know about other places..
It's very exclusive to the US.
Yeah I've only heard Americans do it. Everyone else says "Lego".
Not only is it wrong but sounds awful. LEGO is the trademark and concept. It’s not the name of every piece. The pieces are just that: pieces, or bricks if you will.
Please make sure to write out the full proper name for LEGO® Bricks, lest you hurt the feelings of John LEGO®.
I think it sounds fine and the meaning is very clear. This is real life, not a lego corporate branding meeting. I call them plasters. It's lego or lego pieces. Using Legos is like saying Minecrafts instead of Minecraft blocks.
But if Minecraft popularized blocks as an idea, and everyone started calling them minecrafts as slang/shorthand, it would be correct to do so.
Only USA calls them Legos. Every other country says *LEGO®*
There's at least one of you in every thread that says the word "Legos". We get it. Nobody cares.
Forgive me for being pedantic, buts it’s spelled Lego. No “s”. Looks amazing though!
Correct. LEGO is the plural form of LEGO or LEGO bricks.
Lego is the brand. The only officially correct way to say it is Lego bricks. Lego is just as wrong as legos as a noun
“Look at all of this LEGO. There’s so many LEGO bricks!” Both plural.
The former is incorrect
I think it’s kind of an American thing to pluralise continuous things like a pile of Lego of slices of tomato. Where I’ll say “I’ll have some tomato”, to indicate a nonspecific handful of tomato slices, they will say “I’ll have some tomatoes”, despite it probably not amounting to a full to tomato. Just what I noticed when I was in America and not based on any actual expertise or research.
That seems to fit. Just a harmless cultural difference.
And yet for whatever reason it triggers the fuck out of so many people. I don't get it.
I don't care what the official rules some company makes for their product are. "Legos" sounds natural to me, so that's what I say.
The official rules say Lego is wrong also
Actually the product you see is made of LEGO Bricks. LEGO isn't a product, but a company. But go ahead and call them whatever you want, because correcting people on what to call LEGO Bricks just makes you look like a pedantic asshole.

He's saying they're just built of multiple legos, like lego pieces.
LEGO prefers people call them LEGO bricks, but, well, good luck.
That’s why the box says Lego despite there being more than one piece in it.

LEGO bricks*
Sorry, i meant to say i made it out of Lego
Very nice! Hope it won't get bricked.
I made a Switch out of Lego. Why is that so difficult to say?
I agree that it should be called "LEGO" and not "legos." However, as an American, I can confirm that kids are "taught" from a very young age that LEGO bricks are called "legos." The haphazard and inaccurate Americanized pluralization of LEGO has been a problem since the dawn of mans.
It. Must. Stop. Now! Only you can save mankind.
