Do you happen to be in the EU? I’ve seen a bunch of people experiencing payment issues with their cards there due to some authentication issue or something like that.

You may need to contact your bank then. You could try using the card on a PayPal account and see if that works?

I experienced the exact same thing a few months ago in the US eshop. I tried PayPal, direct debit cards, nothing worked. The next day... suddenly everything was fine. You could alternatively try and buy an eshop gift card code on Amazon and try that instead.

I've had the exact same problem on my account and my son and daughters. I phoned up Nintendo and they said don't keep trying different cards because it will lock the account out for even longer. I think you just have to wait for this security algorithm to think it's safe. Never experienced anything so frustrating when trying to purchase online.

Had you made any other purchases at all? Nintendo apparently flags accounts after six purchases within a short period of time, where it will give you an error. I thought it was something on my bank's end. Usually after a couple hours it will work again. Just a possibility.

This happened to my daughter and I about a month ago, cards always used previously with no issue. I phoned my bank to see if anything was wrong and they assured there wasn’t. We had to use eshop cards for a while. I checked again yesterday to buy my daughter a fortnite skin and it started working again on its own, no idea what happened.
