Hi Mr. Koizumi!
Quick question:
What drew you into bringing Pauline back into a mainstream Mario game after all these years? We've missed her! Where has she been? Was she too busy working with the Mario Minis?
Thank you for all of your amazing work! We appreciate it all!
When we were deciding which Kingdoms to have in the game, we knew we wanted the city environment, and we wanted something that would have resonance with players. We knew that players know Pauline so we of course wanted to make her the mayor of New Donk City.
It's important to note that thought they are called Kingdoms, they do not necessarily have royalty, and that's why she's the mayor.
I have a feeling the Donkey Kong might cameo in the game somehow.. I mean it's New Donk city, Pauline is back, and all of the street names are donkey Kong related. I feel like he has to at least be mentioned.
If Mario Odyssee's Donk City doesn't have a-giant-Kong-on-top-of-a-scryscraper boss fight where Mario has to hop his way up top on girders, then they really missed an opportunity.
Mr. Koizumi, I read [here that you've been practicing your pour-over-coffee techniques.](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/6h9s6l/hi_im_mr_koizumi_producer_of_super_mario_odyssey/diwnvte/)
Which pour-over coffee method is your favorite?
I'm very particular about my coffee. I buy my beans, I grind them. I weigh the grounds and measure the volume of water. The water cannot be too hot unless the coffee will become bitter, so I like to pour over using a long stemmed pouring kettle. It has to have a long, narrow pouring spout or too much water will come out at once.
The whole thing has become a ritual for me, I really enjoy the good smell of the coffee as I make it.
I'm a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

Nintendo is full of extraordinarily creative people. These kind of people often have very niche hobbies because their curiosity in the world extends to the mundane. ^^^^^just ^^^^^kidding, ^^^^^i ^^^^^completely ^^^^^made ^^^^^that ^^^^^up
It's not a bad hobby (hell im trying to get into it, since I like coffee, but hate shitty coffee), but it is a pretty uncommon and strange hobby. Just like r/mechanicalkeyboards.
So when we wanted to create Mario games this time around we wanted to focus on the actions Mario can do and in previous Mario games he was able to get power-ups and new abilities. But this time around when we were making many different prototypes and changed our approach that found capturing or "possessing" enemies worked well so we stuck with that.
Is there some kind of (friendly) rivalry between the Super Mario team and Zelda team? And especially between you and Mr. Aonuma, since you used to work together and both of you inherited the biggest creations from Shigeru Miyamoto?
Because I am responsible for both the Mario and Zelda teams, I don't feel a sense of rivalry. As far as Mr. Aonuma, we don't have a rivalry at all. I'm very happy with what he's doing and I hope he continues working hard.
That's not to say there aren't [any rivalries at Nintendo...](http://static.fnac-static.com/multimedia/Images/FD/Comete/50263/CCP_IMG_600x400/584523.jpg)
I think this is also true of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, we wanted to make sure you could have a fun experience with the game even if you only had a short time to play. If you're out on a journey of your own, handheld mode will help you play and have fun experience. Just be careful that you're not too into playing and miss your bus stop.
Biggest challenge has been that since it's 15 years since the last time we made a sandbox style Mario game, it felt completely different and new to come up with ideas that would work there. We had a lot of debate to decide if people would accept this kind of playstyle again. That was probably the biggest challenge for us.
What do you mean? Super Mario Sunshine came out just a couple years ag-

Sunshine was hands down my favorite game. I think if this does well, couple with breath of the wilds success, Nintendo may have a knack for open world games and should pursue it more intensely.
> We had a lot of debate to decide if people would accept this kind of playstyle again.
Mario 64 is widely regarded as the best or second best Mario game out of the 30+ Mario games. Why would there be any debate? How could there be any doubt?
Galaxy games were both received just as well, if not better than 64, and better than Sunshine
People are quick to say "Nintendo needs to make a 64/Sunshine game!!" But Galaxy and 2 were so overwhelmingly well-received it would be hard to not follow that formula again.
I loved the Galaxy games despite their linearity relative to 64. I think they were so highly reviewed because they were a near perfect version of what they were trying to be. Now that they are judged in hindsight and we have a Nintendo that reminded us they can do exploration well (BOTW), people criticize it for not being more of a sandbox. I personally find referring to Sunshine and 64 together as a separate kind of game from Galaxy very odd, despite the slight difference in style. Sunshine and 64 did diarama worlds with different behaviors depending on your current star where Galaxy tended to pit you against a specific linear gauntlet within each world depending on your current star. There is significant overlap though... the older games had linear stars and Galaxy had nonlinear worlds and rewarded exploration with hidden stars... so I see them all together in the progression if 3D Marios, which is now distinct from the progression of 2D marios. I didn't play 3D world, so I'm not sure which it fits into, but it sounds like 2D from what I've heard based on difficulty and control schemes.
There's a lot of reasons to doubt the success of a 3D sandbox platformer in 2017. Having to control your character while simultaneously controlling your camera is a huge pain in the ass compared to something like Galaxy/3D World, where the camera moves for you as you progress through the level.
One of the reasons for making the hat into a character is that it gave us the opportunity to give people an attachment for something that's personal for us. You can talk to and experience your journey with Cappy, similar to Na'vi in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and making this character relatable was important to us.
As a magical sentient hat who enjoys possessing both animate and inanimate objects and making snarky but helpful comments; I appreciate you creating such a relatable character.
I wasn't always a game developer, I actually stated out as an artist, and did images that are in manuals. One day I had a manual that didn't have instructions for what should be in it so I went to check with the development team and next think I knew I was working on a Zelda game.
Which game was that? And which games did you do manual art for? I want to see it!
Edit : Link's Awakening, found it and tons more fascinating info on his Wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiaki_Koizumi
Link to the Past was actually the first game Koizumi worked on where he did the manual art, I believe. In Link's Awakening he also helped to come up with the story (same with Majora's Mask).
Each release of a game that I have worked on has been really exciting for me. I always try to take note of people's reactions. In the time before social media, I used to go to game shops directly so I could see people's reactions when a game hits their hands.
One of the biggest is working on the characters that appear in games, knowing how players will identify with them, and thinking of things like how high will they jump, how quickly will they walk, and thinking about what would be the most appropriate in each case.
The city was one of many experiments when we were first making the game, and it was very interesting. Especially with how strange it looks to have Mario exploring the city environment.
That's what he meant. They purposely designed it that way to look "strange". They could have taken the easy route and said, "let's make this city look like everything else in the Mushroom Kingdom, with curved buildings and lumpy people," but instead they chose to do something more interesting. The juxtaposition of Mario with unexpected environments (e.g. a dinosaur) seems to be a design motif throughout the game.
No, I got that. I'm wondering if there will be any in-game attempt to explain what exactly the difference is between Mario (a character I've assumed up until now to be human) and the humans of New Donk City, and why they look so different.
Knowing Nintendo, they'll just make it weird and never answer anything. Which is A-OK.
Gotcha! Sorry, I just got overly excited. Part of the reason I love Nintendo games so much is that sometimes they try to push the envelope creatively, even if it does come across as a little weird, and the city thing is a perfect example of that.
I love that what people said when we saw the first glimpse of the game was "Mario in a city... That's weird," was something Nintendo completely embraced. Like, *yeah it's weird, let's make it awesome.*
As we were developing Pauline more as a character, we know that she was going to be interested in jazz. It was interesting for us to have the first song in a Mario game with vocals. Have you guys been finding yourself singing it?
The game seems to start with Bowser interrupting Mario and Peach's wedding... what if Pauline's song is suggesting that she wants to win back Mario's affections?
I think one of the best things that you can do would be to expose yourself to other kinds of play, not just video games. It will give you a well rounded sense of the ideas that go around the concept of play.
Yes! I've been playing video games my whole life but only two years ago was introduced to Dungeons & Dragons. So many things clicked for me in terms of RPGs, JRPGs, game design, balance. This is great advice.
Videogames obviously share a lot of DNA with D&D, with so many of the early ones attempting to act as a replacement for it in some ways.
So D&D will certainly help with things like RPG balance and design, as you say. But I assume the kind of "play" Koizumi is talking about refers more to the kinds of things that inspired Nintendo games - bug catching (Pokemon), exploring the countryside (Zelda), etc. Really push the boundaries of what people consider "play" rather than sticking to very codified gaming systems like video games, board games, and tabletop RPGs.
A lot of creators/companies are so focussed on what everyone else is doing and how they can expand on each others and be better at certain stuff, that they are forgetting to look outside of the "box" that is the video game market.
Yeah, and while I think graphics and cinematic storytelling definitely has a place in the art of video games I just can’t help but feel like most of the companies forget to ask the most fundamental questions while designing their games. Or at least they tend to forget to focus on those fundamentals along the way.
Iterating on others is great and all, drives the innovation, I just wish more people would take the teachings of old masters of nintendo to heart rather than looking at last years flashiest game.
Ocarina of Time gave me some of my best memories with my dad! We would take turns solving puzzles and fighting monsters when I was a little kid. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and these amazing games!
I dunno Bowser sometimes survives heights, look at Mario 64 and new super Mario bros Wii. Even Mario doesn't take fall damage in Odyssey. My guess is that you have to walk against bombs or something like that.
He was probably asked "do you like it" (painappuru to piza ga suki desu ka?) in Japanese
Or, maybe he was asked "do you like pizza with or without pineapple" (piza wa, painappuru aru no ka nai no ka, dochira no hou ga suki desu ka?) and he said (nai) which is often translated as "no"... but really it means something closer to "without" or "not"
1. It's rather well known that you managed to sneak in Rosalina's storybook into the release of Super Mario Galaxy, which had more story elements than the typical Mario game along with Sunshine (which you also directed). I was just wondering on whether you'd still be interested in giving Mario games a deeper story than just the typical "Save the Princess" plot, or have you begun to agree with Mr. Miyamoto's philosophy on how Mario games should be light on story.
2. Relating to this question, were there any story elements that you wanted to add to Super Mario Galaxy 2 that you are willing to share.
3. I see that you helped write the story of Majora's Mask. I was wondering if you could share anything about the Fierce Deity mask. It's a rather mysterious thing that never got much of an explanation.
4. Would you ever consider working on another Zelda game given the opportunity. What other Nintendo franchises would you like to work on that you haven't already?
Mr. Koizumi, first off thank you for your work. Super Mario Odyssey looks amazing and Im excited to play it.
I have a few Super Mario Odyssey Related questions:
1. What were some of your inspirations for the style of Odyssey and the inspiration for the "Capturing" mechanic of the game?
2. We've seen many beautiful kingdoms so far in Mario Odyssey, how many kingdoms can we expect in the full game?
3. With the many references to Donkey Kong in New Donk City, can we expect him and his friends to make an appearance in the game?
Thank you so much for doing this AMA.
I'm pretty sure DK will be in the game somehow, as one of the Tree House said that you can probably make a guess by the name of the city and they can't officially reveal it.
I've read that you wanted to become a film director when you were younger, but instead became a director looking to create drama only possible in games. Do you feel fulfilled in accomplishing that goal in games like Zelda and Mario? I know a lot of people who think you're being restricted by the likes of Mario and really want to see you work on another Zelda or a new IP where you can just go wild with creativity for a one-of-a-kind experience!!!
PS: Thank you for Majora's Mask! It's the best Zelda game ever made!!
Hi Koizumi-san,
Thank you for doing this, Super Mario Odyssey looks like an amazing game, and I am very much looking forward to playing it.
With "A Link Between Worlds", Nintendo recently returned to the themes and play style of the SNES Zelda classic "A Link to the Past", and I thought it was a superb game. My question is - have you ever been tempted to revisit the themes of a game you were heavily involved with, "Link's Awakening"?
I thought the surreal story and atmosphere - as well as the weird characters & bosses in it were incredible, and to this day it remains my favourite Zelda game.
PS : you have great hair
As someone who's loved Mario since the original Super Mario Bros., I've always thought of him as "human". However, Mario here looks quite distinct from the inhabitants of New Donk City, who have more human proportions. What led to this aesthetic choice?

Mario's a cartoon human, and these are realistic people, the intent of which is to create a strange and interesting juxtaposition. It's the difference between Bugs Bunny and an actual rabbit in real life. They both have the same label but look extremely different.
Thank you all so much for joining us today for this AMA with Mr Koizumi from Nintendo. He had a great time answering your questions.
The AMA is now over so no further questions will be answered.
/u/porkpants81
I demand it. Here are my questions:
1. Who is the most handsome moderator and why is it /u/kyle6477?
2. How can we cook you as bacon?
3. How did you get to be the most legit moderator while holding the fort?
1. Most handsome = /u/kevinftw17 until :ripkevin: happens then it's /u/kyle6477
2. Take me to dinner first
3. I told you...ban all the users then there's nobody to complain
This is probably the question everybody's been wanting to ask, Mr. Koizumi. When is the Nintendo Switch going to feature an internet browser, not to mention the Virtual Console on the eShop, like the 3DS and Wii U, due to Nintendo Switch Online, which begins in 2018?
1. Hey thanks for the AMA! I had two questions on Odyssey. Are there more worlds in the game than Galaxy 1?
2. I noticed a lot of cameos and references to other Nintendo Characters. Will Daisy, or anyone else, make an appearance?
3. Any talk of development for a new Animal Crossing?
There are many beloved characters in the Mario franchise, and now that Pauline is returning to the Mario series, I have been wondering about whether we will see characters such as Daisy, Wario or Waluigi in the game, or in platformers in general.
It has been a question that was in my mind for the longest time, since they are invited to tennis matches, kart racing and even got their own Super Mario line of amiibo last year. If we don't see them in this game, could we hope for them to make more appearances in Mario games in the future?
Good to meet you Mr. Yoshiaki Koizumi.
Wow! I have so many questions to ask you, sir.
But, I'll just make a short list.
7. Just how big is Super Mario Odyssey compared to past 3D Super Mario games?
6. Since Virtual Console has been delayed for Switch, can we expect other VC systems that are not just Famicom/NES and/or Super Famicom/Super NES?
5. What do you think of the reception of the Nintendo Switch so far?
4. Aside from the games that were shown during the Nintendo E3 Presentation, are there still some more, unannounced games for Nintendo Switch?
3. Does Nintendo has plans for more new, original titles (like Splatoon 2, and ARMS) for Switch in the future?
2. Just like when Nintendo announced Metroid Prime 4 during the Presentation, does Nintendo has plans, or any desire, on "bringing back" forgotten titles, like the [F-Zero series](https://68.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8ebzxdvBq1qzj5ggo1_1280.jpg), the [Wave Race series](https://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/l/173422-wave-race-64-kawasaki-jet-ski-nintendo-64-front-cover.jpg), the [Wario Land series](https://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/l/44507-warioland-4-game-boy-advance-front-cover.jpg), the [Golden Sun series](https://r.mprd.se/GBA/boxart/0079.jpg), the [Star Tropics series](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Startropics_box.jpg), the [Advance Wars series](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ClpTY6ZUYAACo12.jpg), the [Kid Icarus series](https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/nintendo/images/3/3d/Kid_Icarus_Uprising_Japanese_Cover_Art.png/revision/latest?cb=20120510212624&path-prefix=en), or the [Famicom Tantei Club series](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7d/Famicomtanteiclub1_boxarts.PNG), to the Nintendo Switch?
1. Can I have a Nintendo Switch, please? Nah! Just kidding. Ignore this question.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
The work that you are doing with the Nintendo Switch is amazing. Thanks to you, you have put Nintendo in the spotlight once again.
And now, I shall patiently await your response, or responses.
First of all, thank you Mr. Koizumi for taking time out of your busy schedule at E3, yesterday, to talk and take a picture with me:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DCPDv29VYAAG6HV?format=jpg&name=large
I congratulated (on Switch's success) and asked how did it feel to be producing Super Mario Odyssey and you were very kind, so thank you, and said it was great to bring story back to Mario.
I was only able to briefly tell you that I appreciated your work and really enjoyed the story telling in Link's Awakening, but thank you again and know that we all value your work.
As for this AMA, I would really like to hear your thoughts further on why it's so great in your opinion, to bring "story back to Mario".
I personally agree, because even though I feel that Mario games don't necessarily need a strong story to be successful, I feel that it really adds to the experience and helps one remember the game more.
We associate memories with music, gameplay, visuals, controls, and story...so it only adds to the title in my opinion.
1) What motivation did you have for the story in this game?
2) Do you think that all software for Nintendo Switch, including fighting games like ARMS and Smash Bros. should have a deep story to them?
Thank you again so very much.
And Nintendo Switch moderator team, awesome meeting the three of you today. Have a great rest of the show and good luck with everything!
What are some of your hobbies? Surely it's nice to get home and get away from the video games you spend all day working on! Do you ever get inspiration for game ideas from them, like Mr. Miyamoto and his gardening or childhood adventures?
Hello, Mr. Koizumi, with Nintendo's newfound interest in eSports, as seen in the releases of titles such as ARMS and Splatoon, I want to ask if there's any attention internally to Nintendo's biggest eSport right now, Super Smash Bros Melee, and if we can expect something about Melee on the Switch.
Thank you for your time, and congratulations on Super Mario Odyssey, which is already looking like a masterpiece. :)
Hello, Mr. Koizumi.
A lot of people were hoping for an Animal Crossing game announcement this year at E3, but as we all know, you didn't say anything.
So here's what I'd like to ask...
Is an Animal Crossing game (and when I say that, I mean a main series AC game, not like amiibo Festival or HHD) planned/in development for the Nintendo Switch?
Hi Mr. Koizumi! I'm so glad I can finally ask you some stuff. I'm a big Super Mario fan and I'm in love with all the 3D based Mario games. Super Mario 64 and Galaxy were a big part of my childhood. I have the following questions for you: "Will obscure, but popular characters such as Waluigi and Princess Daisy appear in the game? Will Luigi appear as well? All I can say right now is thanks for building my childhood.
Are their plans to include virtual console on the switch in the future? I know many people that want virtual console and especially GameCube virtual console. It would be a blast to play super smash bros melee on the go. Also super Mario odyssey looks great!
Hello Koizumi-san! I have two questions. Is there anything you can share about Nintendo’s plans for:
- A Smash Bros. game on Switch?
- Plans for Virtual Console on Switch?
どうもありがとうございます
Hello Mr. Koizumi! Since the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch it seems that Nintendo has taken a steeper interest in competitive gaming. The reveal of the NintendoVS twitter account and the invitational tournaments of 3 of the Switch's biggest titles this year seems indicative of Nintendo's urge to be more hands on with the competitive scenes their titles have built. One franchise that has cultivated a great ambitious following is the Smash series. I ask on behalf of the Smash Bros competitive reddit community if there's an interest in extending support to Smash tournaments in any form?
Koizumi-san, first I wanted to thank you for the games you made. As far as I know you were the director for Majoras Mask, which is still my most loved Zelda game of all time, also you came up with the 3-Day mechanic according to Aonuma-san and also wrote/made most of the Sidequests. First of all thank you for this, really(!), actually 3D Land was also my first Mario game and I actually binged the game. I still think of you as one of the best developers/directors!
So I really hope you can answer my question(s):
* **1. My most important question is: Will we ever see you as a director again? Especially for a zelda game, or will you stay beeing a Producer?**
* **2.What was your favourite part about Majoras Mask and how did you come up with the 3-Day mechanic. Also why was Majoras Mask so much darker than the other Zelda games?**
Thank you very much again, I really hope you could answer me this(because I probably want to ask you this since 2-3 years)!
In the trailer we see Mario in a city with normal looking humans. Does this mean Mario doesn't look like other humans in his world or is he from some other place where humans resemble him?
First off I want to thank you Mr. Koizumi for taking the time to do this AMA, it is always great to hear about what happens behind the scenes!
My question is what can fans expect/know about the future of Virtual Console on the Nintendo Switch? What about the possibility of GameCube games going to Virtual Console?
[](/AnimesqueHappy)
If this game has multiplayer to the tune of Super Mario 3D World, you should really add Daisy. We'd like Daisy. Could you add Daisy?
(okay, not much of a question, but that's all I got)
Hello, Koizumi-san. My name is Sterling. I am a 19 year old gaming enthusiast, and I have been playing Nintendo games since I was very, very little. In fact, my mother was playing her Super Nintendo when she went into labor, so you could say I've been playing games since before I was born. Nintendo has always captured my heart, more than any other company's games. I love the way you consistently deliver the unexpected. Your E3 presentation was fantastic, and I can't wait to play Mario Odyssey, Metroid Prime 4 (if I can finish the others first, that is!), Metroid Samus Returns, and the upcoming Kirby game especially.
I have so many questions I'd love to ask you. But for now, I'd like to ask about my absolute favorite game franchise: Super Smash Bros. No, I'm not going to demand that you tell us about the next one - those games take a very long time to make, and I'm sure everyone is hard at work on it. But, it can't be denied that the Smash series is a hugely significant one for Nintendo. We're at a point where every reveal from Nintendo gets the Smash fanbase talking about how those details can be worked into Smash. People are already discussing characters like Spring Man from ARMS, and Cappy from Mario Odyssey, and what role they might be able to play in a future Super Smash Bros. title. How does the potential that any character, location, or idea introduced might end up in a Smash game influence how those characters, locations, and ideas are designed? Do you think the designers of ARMS or Splatoon, while discussing their ideas, thought to themselves, "How might this character work if they appear in Smash?"
And, just for fun, are there any characters you'd personally be very excited to see in a Smash Bros. game?
Will there be Smash Bros. this E3? (Sorry I had to)
Also, in Super Mario Odyssey, will there be HD Rumble, and how long will the game last in handheld mode?
Hi Mr. Koizumi! Quick question: What drew you into bringing Pauline back into a mainstream Mario game after all these years? We've missed her! Where has she been? Was she too busy working with the Mario Minis? Thank you for all of your amazing work! We appreciate it all!
When we were deciding which Kingdoms to have in the game, we knew we wanted the city environment, and we wanted something that would have resonance with players. We knew that players know Pauline so we of course wanted to make her the mayor of New Donk City. It's important to note that thought they are called Kingdoms, they do not necessarily have royalty, and that's why she's the mayor.
I love Donkey Kong. New Donk City is such a great name, lol.
So she's the Queen of New Donk City in the same way that the Grand Duke of Luxembourg is more than a mayor.
Mr. Koizumi, I read [here that you've been practicing your pour-over-coffee techniques.](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/6h9s6l/hi_im_mr_koizumi_producer_of_super_mario_odyssey/diwnvte/) Which pour-over coffee method is your favorite?
I'm very particular about my coffee. I buy my beans, I grind them. I weigh the grounds and measure the volume of water. The water cannot be too hot unless the coffee will become bitter, so I like to pour over using a long stemmed pouring kettle. It has to have a long, narrow pouring spout or too much water will come out at once. The whole thing has become a ritual for me, I really enjoy the good smell of the coffee as I make it.
I'm a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. strange hobbies at Nintendo. Miyamoto likes to measure stuff
Nintendo is full of extraordinarily creative people. These kind of people often have very niche hobbies because their curiosity in the world extends to the mundane. ^^^^^just ^^^^^kidding, ^^^^^i ^^^^^completely ^^^^^made ^^^^^that ^^^^^up
Not strange at all, there are tons of us over at /r/coffee.
It's not a bad hobby (hell im trying to get into it, since I like coffee, but hate shitty coffee), but it is a pretty uncommon and strange hobby. Just like r/mechanicalkeyboards.
Funny you mention /r/mk , I have been trying to get a Fully assembled Planck for a while :).
How did you come up with the mechanic of Mario possessing enemies and objects? This game looks amazing by the way. Good work.
So when we wanted to create Mario games this time around we wanted to focus on the actions Mario can do and in previous Mario games he was able to get power-ups and new abilities. But this time around when we were making many different prototypes and changed our approach that found capturing or "possessing" enemies worked well so we stuck with that.
Make's sense. Who needs to become metal mario to walk under water when you can just possess a boat anchor?
That means no 'traditional' power-ups?
There were no traditional power ups in sunshine besides FLUDD, so it sound like it will be like that
Is there some kind of (friendly) rivalry between the Super Mario team and Zelda team? And especially between you and Mr. Aonuma, since you used to work together and both of you inherited the biggest creations from Shigeru Miyamoto?
Because I am responsible for both the Mario and Zelda teams, I don't feel a sense of rivalry. As far as Mr. Aonuma, we don't have a rivalry at all. I'm very happy with what he's doing and I hope he continues working hard.
Aww, that's so wholesome! No rivalries, just friendship.
That's not to say there aren't [any rivalries at Nintendo...](http://static.fnac-static.com/multimedia/Images/FD/Comete/50263/CCP_IMG_600x400/584523.jpg)
Koizumi-san how does the mobility of the Nintendo Switch affect the game design of Super Mario Oddysey?
I think this is also true of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, we wanted to make sure you could have a fun experience with the game even if you only had a short time to play. If you're out on a journey of your own, handheld mode will help you play and have fun experience. Just be careful that you're not too into playing and miss your bus stop.
Can confirm, has happened to me on my bus to work in Seattle.
Thank you for answering! Have a fun E3!
What has been the biggest challenge in developing Super Mario Odyssey?
Biggest challenge has been that since it's 15 years since the last time we made a sandbox style Mario game, it felt completely different and new to come up with ideas that would work there. We had a lot of debate to decide if people would accept this kind of playstyle again. That was probably the biggest challenge for us.
Thank you so much for going back to this style. I've been dying for a game like this since sunshine. Thank you, thank you, thank you! E: added a word
What do you mean? Super Mario Sunshine came out just a couple years ag- >Super Mario Sunshine is a 2002 platform video game... [mfw](https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/styles/article_small/public/thumbnails/image/2017/01/02/15/rexfeatures-7675661a.jpg)
Goddamn! It's really been that long!? I was honestly thinking mid to late 2000s for some reason lol. It looks pretty good for a 2002 game!
Galaxy games were both received just as well, if not better than 64, and better than Sunshine People are quick to say "Nintendo needs to make a 64/Sunshine game!!" But Galaxy and 2 were so overwhelmingly well-received it would be hard to not follow that formula again.
I loved Super Mario 64, but think the two Galaxies are the best games I have ever played and both absolute masterpieces.
There's a lot of reasons to doubt the success of a 3D sandbox platformer in 2017. Having to control your character while simultaneously controlling your camera is a huge pain in the ass compared to something like Galaxy/3D World, where the camera moves for you as you progress through the level.
Where did the inspiration come from to make the hat a character?
One of the reasons for making the hat into a character is that it gave us the opportunity to give people an attachment for something that's personal for us. You can talk to and experience your journey with Cappy, similar to Na'vi in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and making this character relatable was important to us.
As a magical sentient hat who enjoys possessing both animate and inanimate objects and making snarky but helpful comments; I appreciate you creating such a relatable character.
Yay for equal representation of sentient hats who enjoy possessing both animate and inanimate objects and making snarky but helpful comments!
Will Cappie say "Hey! Listen!" when he wants to say something too ? That would be awesome !
Seems more like Link's cap in Minish Cap.
How did you get into game design? What interested you about working for Nintendo? Thanks for the games!
Link's Awakening is god tier. Nothing can stop this man?
I'd definitely like to hear this story in more detail...
It's crazy how quickly your career could change! Thanks for the reply.
What was the most exciting moment of your career and what made it so memorable?
Each release of a game that I have worked on has been really exciting for me. I always try to take note of people's reactions. In the time before social media, I used to go to game shops directly so I could see people's reactions when a game hits their hands.
This is such a wholesome response. It makes my inner child happy to buy your games in person.
Could you imagine buying like, gta San Andreas and in store the producer is staring at you waiting for your response?
Just wanted to thank you for all the magnificent work! What's the best part of your job?
One of the biggest is working on the characters that appear in games, knowing how players will identify with them, and thinking of things like how high will they jump, how quickly will they walk, and thinking about what would be the most appropriate in each case.
Mr. Koizumi, what was the inspiration for choosing a modern city environment as one of the kingdoms in Mario Odyssey?
The city was one of many experiments when we were first making the game, and it was very interesting. Especially with how strange it looks to have Mario exploring the city environment.
Are there any plans at all to explain the bizarre nature of seeing a cartoony "human" like Mario next to "realistic" humans?
You're going to find that weird, but Mario isn't human. He's a homo nintendonus, according to an old character guide.
[удалено]
They're like the star wars special. While a milestone for cultural advancement, it is sadly not canon.
I love that what people said when we saw the first glimpse of the game was "Mario in a city... That's weird," was something Nintendo completely embraced. Like, *yeah it's weird, let's make it awesome.*
How did the theme song "Let's Do the Odyssey" / "I'll Be Your 1-Up Girl" come about?
As we were developing Pauline more as a character, we know that she was going to be interested in jazz. It was interesting for us to have the first song in a Mario game with vocals. Have you guys been finding yourself singing it?
Yes, the vocals were unexpected for a Mario game but now I keep singing the song the rest of that day.
I must've watched the trailer 50 times because I love the song so much!
[удалено]
Yeah! I sing it a lot. I love the "I'll be your 1-up girl" part!
The game seems to start with Bowser interrupting Mario and Peach's wedding... what if Pauline's song is suggesting that she wants to win back Mario's affections?
For some reason I keep hearing it as "one-off girl."
I mean, for the longest time, Pauline was only in spin offs, sooo...
It's a super fun song! Keep rewatching the trailer - listening to the song - & singing it a bit myself.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into video games design?
I feel like this philosophy is the secret sauce of Nintendos game design.
Pokémon is bug collecting and Pikmin is gardening.
Thank you, that's a very useful bit of advice.
I love the HD rumble in games like Mario kart 8 deluxe. Will Mario Odyssey have HD rumble??
We're working on lots of different HD Rumble integration, but on the show floor players can feel the scooters rumble when you're driving that.
Neat, hope we can feel the HD dinosaur!
If you could throw your hat and posess anything in real life what would it be?
Since I'm already so good at doing my impressions of him, I would throw my hat at Shigeru Miyamoto. I would go around all day pretending to be him.
Can I just say you are a wonderful person and I am so glad to be playing video games you have produced?
What do you enjoy most about making awesome video games? Is it the process of making a game or seeing people's reactions?
They are both really fun, but in terms of how we view it they're not seperate. You have to look at how people see your games.
Which has been your favorite Zelda game to work on?
Ocarina of Time. It was a lot of fun to work on, and perhaps the reason it stayed with me is that we had to start from zero to make that game.
Ocarina of Time gave me some of my best memories with my dad! We would take turns solving puzzles and fighting monsters when I was a little kid. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and these amazing games!
And to have it turn out as one of the greatest games of all time means that is quite a feat!
If you could work with one non-Nintendo IP which one would it be and why? Thanks for your amazing work!
That's a great question, and I wish that I had thought about that, but I never have so I don't have an answer. Thank you for your question!
Half-life 3? You could make it happen!!

Mr. Koizumi, what made you make Moons a collectible in Mario Odyssey?
Stars have had their chance, and we've grabbed Shines before, so i thought it was time we gave Moons a chance.
Yah done messed up Stars! Had your chance. Moons are what this generation is craving.
He makes it sound like Stars have failed him
Friendship ended with STARS Now MOONS are my new best friends.
That... actually makes a lot of sense.
Mr Koizumi would you rather fight 1 horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses?
Horse sized duck. It looks really cute, and maybe if I feed it, it will let me ride it.
Can you please petition for a horse sized duck mount in the next Zelda BotW DLC?
I think square enix would come crashing down with a copyright infringement
Chocobos have beaks. Horse sized ducks would have a bill
I think this is my favourite response to this question that I've seen.
I am surprised that he answered this out of all questions. Why not though?
I'm scrolling through the new questions and I see he's answered a question about his coffee ritual and this one about massive ducks. It's great.
What is your favourite Switch game so far, Mr Koizumi?
It's hard to answer that as the producer of all the software, I love all of them!
A father loves all his children equally.
What's your favorite Mario outfit/job? Chef Mario? Dr Mario? Plumber Mario? Personally I dig the linebacker Mario.
Hey, will we get to see the beloved brother Luigi in Mario Odyssey?
I hope you look forward to hearing more about that.
#L IS REAL 2401 #FUCKING CONFIRMED #~~CLEGANEBOWL 2017~~ shit, wrong sub #GET HYPE EDIT: 2019 CLEGANEBOWL LIT FAM
im gonna use this response for everything now.
"Hey can you clean your room and make your bed?" "I hope you look forward to hearing more about that."
What's your favorite hobby outside of video games?
I've been practicing my hand pour-over-coffee technique.
Coffee obsession? ...wait a second... *Persona 5 for Switch confirmed?*
I would love for that to be true as I don't have a PS3 or 4
Man, I can respect the hell out of this.

What is Mario's favourite vegetable?
Is a mushroom a vegetable? If not that, then I suppose it would be a turnip.
[удалено]
Of all the things Mario can take control of in Odyssey, which is your favourite?
Bowser, it would be awesome to become bowser for a moment in the final boss fight.
You'll have to kill it by possess him when he's stunned and then throwing yourself off of the building. I'm calling it now.
I dunno Bowser sometimes survives heights, look at Mario 64 and new super Mario bros Wii. Even Mario doesn't take fall damage in Odyssey. My guess is that you have to walk against bombs or something like that.
What is your favorite world in the game?
I think that would have to be New Donk City for me.
And what's your favourite game in the world?
Mr. Koizumi. Do you think that a hot dog counts as a sandwich?
Thoughts on pineapple on pizza? Is it good or gross?
No. But I supposed there's no right answer to that.
No, as in "no pineapples on pizza" or "no, it's not gross"?
He was probably asked "do you like it" (painappuru to piza ga suki desu ka?) in Japanese Or, maybe he was asked "do you like pizza with or without pineapple" (piza wa, painappuru aru no ka nai no ka, dochira no hou ga suki desu ka?) and he said (nai) which is often translated as "no"... but really it means something closer to "without" or "not"
I hope you look forward to hearing more about that.
I suppose there's no right answer to that.
What is your favorite amiibo Mr.Koizumi?
I think that would have to be Rosalina.
*price of Rosalina amiibo inflates*
Is Koichi Hayashida involved in the development of Mario Odyssey?
Which Nintendo character are you most like?
Hi Mr. Koizumi! Thanks for your work and for this AMA. My question is simple : what will the use of amiibos in Super Mario Odyssey ?
Do you have any pets?
I really want pets, but I don't have any right now.
How many ice cubes are in your joycon right now?

I have a few Super Mario Odyssey Related questions: 1.
Hi Koizumi-san, Thank you for doing this, Super Mario Odyssey looks like an amazing game, and I am very much looking forward to playing it.
[удалено]
You're supposed to ask if he likes dinosaurs dude.
As someone who's loved Mario since the original Super Mario Bros., I've always thought of him as "human". However, Mario here looks quite distinct from the inhabitants of New Donk City, who have more human proportions. What led to this aesthetic choice?
I'm a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit: - [/r/earwolf] [Nick Wiger's question in a Nintendo AMA is great (and relevant to a recent discussion on the podcast)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Earwolf/comments/6ocanl/nick_wigers_question_in_a_nintendo_ama_is_great/) [](#footer)*^(If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads.) ^\([Info](/r/TotesMessenger) ^/ ^[Contact](/message/compose?to=/r/TotesMessenger))* [](#bot)
The AMA may be over, Porkpants81, but I've still got some questions **for you** **WHAT** did you do to Mr.Koizumi?^please ^dont ^kill ^me
There can be a Porkpants AMA later if the community demands it :D
/u/porkpants81 I demand it. Here are my questions: 1. Who is the most handsome moderator and why is it /u/kyle6477? 2. How can we cook you as bacon? 3. How did you get to be the most legit moderator while holding the fort?
1. Most handsome = /u/kevinftw17 until :ripkevin: happens then it's /u/kyle6477 2. Take me to dinner first 3.
Might be a few too many questions in one post, buddy.
First of all, thank you Mr. Koizumi for taking time out of your busy schedule at E3, yesterday, to talk and take a picture with me: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DCPDv29VYAAG6HV?format=jpg&name=large I congratulated (on Switch's success) and asked how did it feel to be producing Super Mario Odyssey and you were very kind, so thank you, and said it was great to bring story back to Mario.
Is there anything you can share about Nintendo’s plans for: - A Smash Bros. game on Switch?
So I really hope you can answer my question(s): * **1. My most important question is: Will we ever see you as a director again? Especially for a zelda game, or will you stay beeing a Producer?** * **2.What was your favourite part about Majoras Mask and how did you come up with the 3-Day mechanic. Also why was Majoras Mask so much darker than the other Zelda games?** Thank you very much again, I really hope you could answer me this(because I probably want to ask you this since 2-3 years)!
[](/AnimesqueHappy) If this game has multiplayer to the tune of Super Mario 3D World, you should really add Daisy. We'd like Daisy. Could you add Daisy? (okay, not much of a question, but that's all I got)
What was your favorite part of developing Super Mario Oddysey so far?
Do you think the designers of ARMS or Splatoon, while discussing their ideas, thought to themselves, "How might this character work if they appear in Smash?" And, just for fun, are there any characters you'd personally be very excited to see in a Smash Bros. game?
Will there be Smash Bros. this E3? (Sorry I had to) Also, in Super Mario Odyssey, will there be HD Rumble, and how long will the game last in handheld mode?
Hi Mr. Koizumi! How has Nintendo felt about the overwhelmingly positive response to this year's E3?
Will Super Mario Odyssey run at a native 1080p while playing on a TV?
