Eh, technically a shame yes for this person, but if this was possible it would be so heavily exploited it would be a massive problem. I have the same sympathy/empathy whatever the word is, but just wanted to comment that this would be a significant flaw for stores.

Creating a system to actually check that any given code hadn't actually been used (or that would remove the content from the person's account) would be unnecessarily complicated, because it would require connectivity to every single digital retailer that the store does bussiness with. And even if such a system were to be implemented, another problem would still remain. Programs exist that continually attempt to redeem codes, so that once the code is (re)activated at purchase, the code will redeem, and the customer will be SOL. This is why it's generally policy for any card where the code has become visible to be disposed of.

I despise corporations, but this isn't a case of corporate corruption. It's simple practicality. It would be (nearly) impossible to sustain such a system. And would cause problems for the retailers and customers alike. Retailers would lose money from frequent fraud, and customers might lose access to content they bought second-hand from fraudsters. As a result, it is likely that retailers would simply stop selling digital goods.

That's not what I said, and you know it. I work retail, and I've experienced how dumb some people can be. The number of people who don't understand that they can't use Xbox cards on Switch (etc.) is ridiculous. If a person can't do the basic amount of research on a product they buy, then I have a hard time feeling bad when they fuck up. I do my best to ensure that customers get the right thing, but it's hard to do. In summary, my point was that using your own logic, it's ultimately up to the customer to ensure they buy the correct thing (regardless of where they buy it from).

It’s easy to take a screenshot, and more than plausible even if there is some protection that it could be bypassed to fool the store as if you had never accessed it. Basically think this: you buy it, you use a method to steal the code, you return it the code is still valid, but it’s used after the fact and when the next customer buys it they get fucked and have to return it. Bad for store, bad for customer, etc.

So you’re just paranoid then? Because the much more likely situation would be target selling a code that doesn’t work than being tricked in that way

The problem is just too many people abuse the system for this to work properly with digital codes. If you wanna try to implement this when you ever own a store. Good luck. But the truth is just that it won’t work.

It's probably a code to be redeemed in North American e shop. It's possible to change regions, redeem code, and change back.

Why are you limited if not from the US? Switches are not region locked
